The Big Deserty The Big Desert has had a few natural disasters such as

On 19th December 2002 lightening strikes caused fires

in the Big Desert. These

rough 180,000hectares of bush land.



Species from the Big deserty The Big Desert is home to a wide type of birds, reptiles and

mammals. It offers visitors an opportunity to experience alandscape which has remained unaffected by humanbeings and provides a challenge for the experienced hiker.

y The region is considered to be the best single area in Victoria for reptiles with over fifty species of lizards andsnakes recorded. Ninety-three species of birds have been

recorded in the park including the extremely rare western whipbird. Mammals found in the area include the silky mouse, western pygmy possum and Mitchell's hopping-mouse.



The Great Victorian Deserty The Great Victoria Desert in Australia was first crossed by the European explorer

Ernest Giles in 1875.

y David Lindsey's expedition crossed the area from the top to bottom in 1891. Lime

Juice Camp is named to remind us of one of their mishaps: it was there at the party,they decided to have a part in all of this and open their own supply of lime juice. It

did not go well . It was mixed with alcohol and water in a galvanized tin, with the

result that everybody became rather sick with zinc poisoning. Ah well bad luck!

y The next explorer to leave his mark was Frank Hann, who was looking for lands

and for gold in the land between 1903 and 1908. He named a few more places and

left his mark.y And last but not least there is the famous Len Beadell. He worked as a surveyor for

the Australian army, and surveyed and build roads in the 1960s. If you read any of

the many books he wrote about his time in the Great Victoria Desert then you can

guess that the Anne Beadell Highway (named after his wife) is not exactly a

highway which is Fairly weird?



How Big is the Great Victorian

Desert?

TheGreat Victorian Desert is 424,400 km2 according to

this site if the last number is correct it is the 3rd

biggest desert but if the 1st number is correct thatmeans its eight biggest desert in the world



Antarcticay Antarctica is a desert because it is a polar region. It is

obviously different to all the others but it is the driestdesert because the extreme cold f reezes, water vapours out

of the air. Annual snow fall on the polar plateau isequivalent to less than 0.5cm of rain, keep this in mind adesert if a ver y dr y place that includes ice.
