and Hannah North. Lydia died 3 JUN 1857 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 93. Her body was interred JUN 1857 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Russell was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. see 1897 History p. 558 and 1087. First settled in Northeast corner of (what is now) Ward Township and then moved to Sullivan. See Rhoda Ladd's A Revolutionary Heritage p 161 ... Birthplaces of Children indicate migration from Connecticut to Vermont and back to Connecticut prior to move to Pennsylvania. From the 1897 Tioga County History: Russel ROSE and Lydia ORVIS were among the first settlers in what is now Ward Township (It was Sullivan earlier). Little is known of his early life, but at the age of 23 he enlisted in the Continental army and served throughout the struggle for liberty. While in camp at Valley Forge he was promoted to serve as an aide on Washington's staff, and did good and efficient service. After the war,he returned to Connecticut, where he married Phoebe ORVIS who bore two children, Achsah and Phoebe. ...After her death he married Phoebe's sister, Lydia ORVIS who bore eight children. Russell and Lydia brought their family from Connecticut in 1807, and located in the midst of an unbroken forest, in what is now Ward Township, but soon afterward moved to Sullivan Township and settled on the State Road. With the assistance of their children, they rapidly cleared off quite a snug little farm, and at his death, June 1, 1830, he was one of the best known men in the county. In politics he was originally a Federalist, and afterwards cast his fortunes with the Whig party. Both he and his wife were members of the Baptist church (they were among the founders of the church at Troy, PA). She survived her husband over a quarter of a century, dying June 3, 1857. It is stated of Mr. ROSE that during President Monroe's administration, he went afoot to Washington D.C., to see why his pension had been withheld from him. On his arrival the officer in charge said he could not attend to his case until the following day, but Mr. Rose threatening to go to the President direct, he promptly rectified the matter, and the old veteran returned home as he had gone, arriving there none the worse for his long tramp. Covington, Covington Township, Tioga County, PA259; m. JOHN PACKARD259, 30 Jun 1814, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, PA; b. 15 Jan 1788, MA259; d. 06 Mar 1842, Sullivan Twp., Tioga County, PA259. Notes for REBEKAH ROSE: Information provided by Joyce M. Tyce, Tioga County PA researcher. Mrs. Rebekah Packard. The art of growing old gracefully is acquired by comparatively few, though it is an art in which the majority of people are anxious to excel. There is an old saw which begins something like this: " For lengthy life to be desired Many things must be required; Income from rent and taxes clear, At least one thousand pounds a year," But such was not the lot of Mrs. Rebeckah Packard. She has never been blessed with an abundance of this world's goods, and during many years she attended to her household duties and reared eleven children. Until recently her life was a busy one; but she possessed good health, a philosophical turn of mind and faced all her trials and difficulties courageously and trod them under her feet, so to speak. She never crossed bridges until she came to

Page 20: Descendants of Thomas Everard - Gustner Wright Genealogy

them and never worried over matters she could not help. Considering her activity, her bright mind and the preservation of all her faculties at her great age, she was without doubt the most remarkable woman in Pennsylvania. She had lived under every administration of every president since the formation of this government having been born a year and a half before Washington retired from the presidency. She was eleven years of age when Robert Fulton's steamboat made its first trip up the Hudson, and she married six months before General Andrew Jackson won his victory over the British at New Orleans. She was a middle age woman when she read with interest about Fremont's heroic expedition of discovery in the untracked region of the Rocky mountains, California and Oregon, and she was comparatively an old woman when the first railway was built in this country, when Morse constructed his telegraph line and Howe invented his sewing machine. What wonderful strides have been made in human progress in the space of one human life! Rebekah Rose was born at Norwalk, Conn., Oct. 13, 1795. She was the daughter of Russell Rose who was an army officer in the Continental army and one of Washington's staff officers. Her father moved to this county and settled in what is now Sullivan township in 1807, and in Sullivan-Covington townships Mrs. Packard has spent almost all her days. She married John Packard on June 30, 1814, and to them eleven children were born. Her husband died in the spring of 1842. . From Millerton Notes by C.P. Balch . DAR meeting - Mrs Marian Smith will deliver an Eulogy in memory of her late illustrious Ancestor. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution considers a Real Daughter one who was both a Daughter of a Revolutionary Soldier as well as a member of our Society. In Placing this Memorial to Rebekah Rose Packard, A Real Daughter, We members of the Wellsboro Chapter, Members of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, rededicate ourselves to the purposes of our Society and to the Constitution of the United States of America. Rebekah Rose Packard's birthday was celebrated annually for a good many years by a family reunion held at the home of her son Harley with whom she lived. She lived to be over 105 years of age and although so old, she retained her mental faculties wonderfully, her memory reaching back over a century, enabling her to recall incidents of her childhood. The last birthday party was held on her 100th birthday. Seven of her children attended: Mrs. Lydia Smith, Mrs. Mary Lovell, Ashley PAckard, Harley Packard,Mrs. Elmina Ford and Albert Packard. Mrs. Helen Bartoo who lives at Asaph has several treasured heirlooms in her possession among them pictures of Rebekah Rose Packard and one of the hand made quilts which was made for Mrs. Elmina Ford. The descendants of Rebekah Rose Packard are many and now live in many states. She was the daughter of Russell Rose, a Revolutionary Patriot, who served as a private from Massachusetts. She is buried in Mainesburg Cemetery. ...to Tioga County and settled in what is now Ward Township. The journey was made in sleighs. Since that time Mrs. Packard has resided in this county, with the exception of two years during which time she lived in Yates County, N.Y. On June 30, 1814 she married John Packard, who died in 1842 leaving her with six sons and five daughters of whom four sons and two daughters survive her: Mrs. L.P. Smith of Troy aged 81 years; N. R. Packard of Mainesburg aged 80 years; John H. Packard of Mitchell's Creek aged 66 years; Mrs. E. R. Ford of Ansonia aged 64 years; A. F. Packard of Cherry Flats aged 61 years. Ths sons are all veterans of the Civil War. Mrs. Packard leaves thirty two grand children and several descendants of the fourth generation. Until she was seventy years old Mrs. Packard was an indefatigable weaver of cloth and carpets. Since then she has done much fancy needle work and made many quilts. Each of her children and grandchildren have a quilt of her piecing. One of the quilts, which was given to A. H. Packard of Elmira NY contains over one thousand pieces and was made by Mrs. Packard in her 98th year. It was not until a few months ago that Mrs. Packard began to show evidence of her extreme age, up to that time she had been healthy, fairly robust, ate heartily and was able to walk about the house and the yard without aid. Her brain was clear and she was well posted upon the topics of the day. She also made frequent trips on the Tioga Railroad alone. Although her eyesight had become somewhat dimmed and her hearing quite defective, she conversed very intelligently. Note from JMT: It is often overlooked by biographers who like to credit the men of the family with almost everything, that Rebeckah still had very young children in the household at the time of her husband's death and she ran the farm and raised the children alone for much of her life. At the time of John's death, the oldest of her children were just reaching adulthood and the youngest were barely out of infancy. She married (1) JOHN WATSON265 Abt. 1811 in Burlington, Burlington Twp., Bradford County, PA265, son of JOHN WATSON and HULDAH FOX. He was born 1787 in East Haddam, MIddleses County, CT265, and died Sep 1825 in Monroeville, Huron County, OH265. She married (2) THOMAS REXFORD265 Aft. 1830, son of THOMAS REXFORD and SILVE EVERETT. He died 1838265. She married (3) DAVID CRIPPEN265 1844265, son of ROSWELL CRIPPEN and SARAH GRIFFIS. He was born May 1785 in Alford Township, Berkshire County, MA265, and died 03 Apr 1858 in Rutland Township, Tioga County, PA265. Notes for SOPHRONIA ROSE: Sophronia was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sophronia lived alone in 1830 aged 30-40. She was next door to her sister Phoebe Rose and her husband WIlliam Luddington. She was listed as Saffrona Watson. This helps date her marriage to Thomas Rexford which apparently had not occurred by the time of the 1830 census. None of her young children were with her at the time of the census. In the Census of 1850, Sophronia was listed as a head of household in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Youngest sons, John and Charles were in the household with David and Sophronia this year. Sophronia's third husband David Crippen is father to her son in law George Crippen who married her daughter Louisa Watson. Info has her born in Putney, Rutland County Vermont. Putney is in Windham County. Poultney is in Rutland County. I assume the Rutland County is correct because brother Enos is said to have been born in Pultney which is similar to Poultney. Sophronia travelled with her parents and siblings in 1807 from Connecticut to Sullivan

They already had a large family of small children who accompanied them. David registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. Genealogical & Biographical Records. Vol. 88, pg. 161. June 1957 from a letter by David reviewing what genealogy he knew about his family. Says he married Sophronia in the sixtieth year of his life. That being the case, she was fifty five and not likely to have three children after that.. David lists the last three daughters with his wife Elizabeth, not with Sophronia, which is

Page 26: Descendants of Thomas Everard - Gustner Wright Genealogy

certainly more likely. Based on that, I will move them. David is specific that he had eight sons and seven daughters with Elizabeth. Earlier reference attributing the last three daughters to Sophronia is obviously wrong. David migrated to Rutland Township with his first wife, Elizabeth WORDEN, in 1814. They settled adjacent to Elizabeth's sister, Annis WORDEN, and her husband Jesse SMITH. This is in the area where the Crippen Cemetery remains in its abandoned and uncared for state. He was born 07 Mar 1812 in Walton, Delaware County, NY269, and died 25 Mar 1883 in Rutland Township, Tioga County, PA269. Notes for LOUISA WATSON: From Crippen Ancestry. George Pine Crippen married Louisa Watson, the daughter of John and Sophronia (Rose) Watson of Ohio. John Watson and his wife were natives of Massachusetts. John Watson descended from a distinguished English family noted in England for centuries of brainy men. The first Watson to come to America crossed in 1672, settled near Salem, Massachusetts with his family and later drifted to New York. The Rose family, another substantial New England one, stood for honor and sobriety. John Watson moved his family to Ohio when it was comparatively new country, and there reared his family. Sophrona Watson, married a second time and had one child, Martha Rexford, who married Gideon Hodges. Martha Rexford Hodges and Louisa Watson Crippen corresponded for many years after Martha Rexford and Gideon Hodges relocated on farmland in Illinois. Sophronia's third marriage was to David Crippen. Many are the lives that have been made better, and the hearts that received encouragement as a result of her tender ministry. She was a faithful member of the Baptist church. The funeral was held from the home on Monday, October 21, and was conducted by her pastor, the Rev. S. Harrett, assisted by the Rev. S. Earley, who spoke tenderly of his association with her during many years of acquaintance. The singing was excellent and formed a very important part of the impressive service. Notes for IDA ROSE WATSON: From the Minnie Kenyon Scrapbook. WATSON, IDA ROSE The subject of this sketch was born in Rutland township, now Roseville borough, on July 17, 1854, and was the eldest of six children born to Daniel and Clarina Watson, both deceased. Her childhood and adult years woe passed with her parents until their decease, to whom she was always a dutiful and loving daughter, affectionately ministering to their wants during all their declining years, and afterwards with her brother, D. E. Watson, helping to maintain the old home, which has always been a mecca to many a wayfarer. Being the eldest of the children she early learned to assume responsibilities, and cares, to which she never afterwards was a stranger. Early in her adult life she became a Christian and uniting with the local Baptist church by baptism, she was ever consistent in her life with the profession she had made, striving always to follow in the footsteps of the Master whom she loved to serve, and being always "instant in season and out of season." Many times has the remark been made other: "If ever there was a Christian, she is one." Being largely endowed with that rare commodity, common sense, her counsel was often eagerly sought and cheerfully given to all who felt thrir need of it, and no one was better qualified to assist in the transacting of many varieties of business. Her former pastor, while delivering his sermon at her funeral, made the statement that whenever he felt borne down with cares and trials which sometimes would hedge his way. he would say: "Well, I will go and talk with Ida about it," and would go away relieved of his burden. Truly, one of God'" chosen one has gone home. In the community, in her large circle of friends, and in the church, there is a vacancy that cannot be filled, and to her sister, Mrs. Henry H Smith; to her brother, D. E. Watson, to Russel Watson, for whom she has cared, and been a mother since his early infancy, and to her nephew and nieces, has come an irreparable loss- Surely, we humbly and sincerely thank God for Ida, for her unblemished life, for her Christian character, and for her Christian influence and example, which she always unconsciously exerted. (Can't read next line) great desire to hear Billy Sunday, she went. on Saturday. April 4, to Scranton, and, after securing a boarding place, went in the evening to attend service in the Sunday tabernacle. She returned, after the service, to her boarding place, and, feeling very much fatigued, and complaining of a pain in her left side, said she would retire, remarking she though she would feel better after resting, requesting out she be called by 8:30 o'clock in the morning so she could attend the service. Not hearing anything from her, the lady of the house rapped at her door, and getting no response pushed it open and found her apparently sleeping. Approaching her and placing her hand upon her face. she found she was dead. Truly, she had gone to sleep on earth to awaken in Heaven--an end she had earnestly desired, and coming apparently without suffering. Her funeral was held from her late home on Thursday, April 9, at 11 o'clock a.m. her fanner pastor, the Rev. Seymour Barrett, officiating, taking for his text, "She is not dead but sleepeth." Luke 8:52. He was assisted by the Revs. Johnson and ?uscomb. and notwithstanding the almost impassable condition of the roads, the large attendance of saddened and sorrowing people attested the high esteem in which she was held.

Notes for OSMER CRIPPEN: CRIPPEN / REDFIELD FAMILY BIBLE Submitted by Creig Crippen These are copies of pages in Osmer Crippen's family bible. I believe most of it was written by Ada Ann Crippen, Osmer's wife, my grandmother. The last two entries on the obituary page were written by Osmer's daughter, Florence, my aunt. The bible is in the possession George Osmer Crippen, it was left to him by Aunt Florence when she died in Oct. 1983. George O. Crippen presently resides at 160 E. Elm Dr., Orange City, FL 32763. The bible was published in Portland, ME, by Geo. Stinson & Co. It contains two versions of scripture, the King James and a revised version, in a two column format. There is no date of publication given but this revised version came out in 1885 so I would assume the book was probably purchased in the 1890s, from one of those bible salesmen who used to travel the rural areas. On the "MARRIAGES" page Ada has entered the birth dates for Osmer and herself. She has entered that Osmer was born in "the town of Rutland." There is no town by that name, Rutland is the name of the township in which the village of Roseville is located. Also she lists her birth place as "the town of Delmar", Delmar is not a town it is the name of the township where the Tioga County seat, Wellsboro, is located. Delmar Township is about 20 miles west of Rutland Township. My father has told me that Ada Ann Redfield was teaching school at a small country school near the Crippen farm in the 1870s. That is how she and Osmer met, they were married in 1879. It seems the Crippens of that generation were enamored of school teachers. George Rush Crippen, Osmer's brother, also married a school teacher, Lottie Seeley, whom he met at a local school. They were married in 1890. My father, Eugene, was one of Lottie's students. Marriages Mr Osmer Crippen and Miss Ada Ann Redfield were married Dec. 17th, 1879 At Canton, Bradford Co.,Pa. Births Osmer Crippen was born Dec.24th 1848 in the town of Rutland, Tioga Co., Pa. CRIPPEN - Osmer Crippen, one of Rutland's most highly esteemed citizens, died on Sunday morning last, after a long illness of Brights disease. The funeral was held from the family home at 1 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon and at 3 o'clock from the Roseville Baptist church, and was largely attended. Burial was in the Roseville (Watson) Cemetery. The Rev. Seymour Barrett was the officiating clergyman. Mr Crippen was 59 years old, and is survived by his widow, who was Miss Ada Redfield, three sons and one daughter, and a brother Rush Crippen. A.M. Crippen of Mansfield is a cousin of the deceased. More About OSMER CRIPPEN: Burial: Roseville (Watson) Cemetery Notes for ADA REDFIELD: From the Erma Smith Tice Scrapbook. CRIPPEN, MRS. ADA A. Mrs. Ada A. Crippen died at her home in Roseville July 13, 1923, after a long illness of rheumatism. All that medical skill could offer, with the best of care from those near and dear to her were given to her during the three years of intense suffering which confined her to her bed, but all this failed to break the bands of the disease and she bore her affliction with patience as only one who receives strength from the Great Burden Bearer can. She was born August 20, 1854, in Delmar, the daughter of Augustus and Aurilla Doud Redfield. Her early life was spent at the home of her parents and her education from the school near her home. While yet young she took up her work as a teacher and taught school until Dec. 17, 1879, when she was united in marriage to Osmer Crippen, a young farmer of sterling qualities, who passed away some years ago, leaving his companion with the children who had been born into their home during their happy years of married life which had been spent in Rutland. The children, three boys and one daughter, all live in Roseville-Eugene, Augustus, Orey and Florence at home. One brother, Charles C. Redfield, survives. Mrs. Crippen was a member of the Baptist Church and was always ready to help in its behalf as long as her health permitted. In the passing away of this member the Community has lost a friend and neighbor and all who knew her join in giving sympathy to the family in their hour of sorrow. The funeral services were held at the family home Monday, July 16, Rev. Barrett, her former pastor, officiated. The floral offerings, the number in attendance, the autos for the accommodation of all, spoke of the esteem in which the deceased was held. Appropriate music was rendered by a trio composed of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wilcox and Ella Mae Brace. Burial in the family plot in Roseville cemetery. Notes for GEORGE RUSH CRIPPEN: From Crippen Ancestry by Creig Crippen. All his life George Rush Crippen remained a Republican and an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He served as town clerk of Rutland Township and as school director for eight years. His son considered him a gentlemen farmer, a well respected citizen who frequently acted as advisor to neighbors and friends. The Genealogical and Personal History of Northern Pennsylvania describe him: "George Rush Crippen has behind him a long line of splendid colonial and revolutionary ancestry, of which any American may justly be proud. His forbearers helped to maintain law and order in the colony of Massachusetts; they fought the Indians, the French, the English, in both the war of the revolution and that of 1812, upheld the moral and religious element at all times and assisted in conquering the wilderness and building homes for themselves and others. Mr. Crippen is the sixth generation since Jabez Crippen came to America, and his children are the seventh, a distinctive record indeed." married GRACE HALL407,408. She was born 1885409,410, and died 10 Mar 1959 in Mansfield, Richmond Twp., Tioga Co., PA411. Notes for AUGUSTUS CRIPPEN: From the Ella Moore Burleigh Scrapbook. AUGUSTUS CRIPPEN BURNED TO DEATH Augustus Crippen, 68, was burned to death at 3 a.m. Saturday morning when fire leveled a tenant house on the Willis Kittle farm, in Columbia Township on the Sopers Corners Road between Austinville and Rutland. The small tenant house was located between the Kittle home and barn. The Kittle family awoke at about 2:30 to find the tenant house ablaze. An alarm was telephoned to the Troy Fire Department but the fire alarm could not be sounded because the borough's electric power had been knocked out by the night's gale. Fire Chief Victor Warner drove the chief's car, its siren screeching, from house to house as he roused several of the volunteer firemen. Each in turn summoned other fire department members until a sizable crew had been alerted to man the fire apparatus. Fireman were unable to quench the blaze because it had gained too much headway, but were able to prevent its spread to the other farm buildings, even though the barn was only 50 feet away. The Kittles did not know that Mr.Crippen was home until the tenant house had burned through so that they could see his body in the bed. Cause of the fatal fire was not immediately determined; the farm was without electric power so that electricity was eliminated as a reason. He is survived by two son, Rexford Crippen of Rutland, and Alton of Pattchogue, N.Y.; sister, Miss Florence Crippen of Ralston; brothers, Eugene Crippen of DeLand, Fla, and the Rev. Orey Crippen of Rutland; eight grandchildren. The funeral was held Monday at the Soper & Moshier Funeral Home, Troy, the Rev. Glen Dewey officiating. Burial was in Watson Cemetery, Roseville. CRIPPEN, REV. OREY - ROSEVILLE MAN A WONDER While on a pastorial trip over in Rutland township last Friday afternoon, a couple of Advertiser representatives ran across a decided wonder in the shape of a man, and a preacher at that. Now, we don't expect any one to believe this story (especially if they know us) but it is, fact, no matter if it does sound fishy. Rev. Orey Crippen is the pastor of four different churches, the Roseville Baptist Church is one of them, and three others in different places. Besides this, Mr. Crippen is the regular R.F.D. mail carrier from Roseville postoffice, going on his trip every day, and in addition to all this he owns and runs a large dairy farm about a mile this side of Roseville. And he does the most of the work on this same farm. We might add to this, as long as we are making a regular story that every little while Mr. Crippen is called upon to make addresses at various conventions, of an evening, and also to officiate at funerals of members of these four different churches. We'll ask the world at large if the above isn't some job for a free-born American citizen? CRIPPEN, REV. OREY E. - WE SALUTE "He practices what he preaches," said a lifelong friend of the Rev. Orey E. Crippen of Roseville. Children call the 73 year old circuit preacher "Uncle Orey." Friends say he "belongs to everyone" After performing 397 wedding ceremonies and officiating at 1,170 funerals in his 44 years of service the Rev. Mr. Crippen is now "talking about retirement." The silver-haired Baptist minister began his career in 1919 at the Lawrence Corners and Bailey Creek Baptist churches. Tioga and Bradford County residents know him well. "I have married couples, their children and now I'm waiting for the grandchildren," quipped Mr. Crippen. Since he preached his first sermon at the age of 26, the congregations that have known him will attest to the fact that "when you need him, he is always there." His dedication to the church has not passed unnoticed. In 1956 Mr. Crippen was recipient of the annual Town and Country Award. A citation accompanying the award credited him for creating a "very wholesome Christian atmosphere...due to the respect the community has for this Baptist minister." The award also cited Mr. Crippen for accepting and carrying out "with real dignity many responsibilities in the Pennsylvania Baptist Convention." In 1957 he received a similar award from the American Baptist Convention of Philadelphia saluting him for "distinguished service." Born in Rutland Township, the son of farm parents, he developed an interest in church work while serving as a Sundy School superintendent. Most people in Rutland Township know that Mr. Crippen has held the Roseville Baptist Church pastorate for 14 years. Not all realize this is the third time has served the church. In 1920 he assumed charge of the Roseville church and the same year served the Coryland Federated Church. In 1922 a third pulpit was added to the circuit preacher's busy schedule-the Austinville Baptist Church. The early years weren't easy. His wife, the former Martha Frost of Roseville said that at the start of his ministerial career her husband had charge of four pastorates while working as a full time rural mail carrier. The Crippens have two daughters, Mrs. Rex Faulkner of Tioga and Mrs. Richard DeGeus of Gillett. It wasn't until 1928, one year after being assigned the Tioga Borough, Holiday and Hammond Baptist Churches, that Mr. Crippen was ordained. His theology training was gained through correspondence courses from Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. He also attended Keuka College while it was a co-educational school. Some of the many churches he has served are the Wells and Columbia Presbyterian Church of Columbia Cross Roads; the Columbia and Wells Baptist Church; the East Smithfield Circuit which at the time was the East Smithfield, Springfield and Bentley Creek Churches (Bradford County). A statement made by Mr. Crippen indicates that quitting is actually alien to his philosophy; "There are many hard experiences; problems hard to solve." Coryland and Roseville Baptist Churches will probably hear Mr. Crippen's interpretation of Christianity for many Sundays. From a 1963 issue of the Mansfield Advertiser. CRIPPEN, REV. OREY RETIREMENT A retirement tea was held recently in the Roseville Baptist Church for Rev. and Mrs. Orey Crippen honoring them for their many faithful years of service to both the Church and the Community. Rev. Crippen has been a pastor for forty-four years and served many charges in the area. More About REV. OREY E. CRIPPEN: Burial: Watson Cemetery, Roseville, Rutland Twp., Tioga Co., PA421

CRIPPEN, CECIL KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT Cecil Crippen, popular young Mansfield man was fatally injured this morning about one o'clock when his car was wrecked on the Millerton road. The accident happened at a curve near the W. N. Smith farm about a mile west of Millerton when Mr. Crippen and Gerald Baarnes were returning from Elmira where they had been attending a radio school. When near the Smith farm the car suddenly swerved off the road and when Mr. Crippen, who was driving, tried to turn it back, it crashed into a tree, throwing both men out. Mr. Crippen was thrown about ten feet from the car and his skull was fractured. He lived only a few minutes. Mr. Barnes was thrown about twenty feet from the car and was unconscious when picked up. Dr. Hughes Meaker, of Mansfield was called and Mr. Barnes was taken to his home here, where he is reported to be suffering from shock and bruises. Corporal Thomas Betzko, of the Highway Patrol Sub-station in Mansfield, investigated the accident and reported to Coroner William White, of Wellsboro, who decided that an inquest was not necessary. Mr. Crippen's body was removed to the Shaw undertaking rooms in Mansfield. Mr. Crippen was the son of Augustus and Grace Hall Crippen and was born in Rutland 23 years ago. He graduated from the Mansfield Senior High School in 1928 and from Elmira Business Institute in 1930.
