Notes for ROBERT STANFIELD:The Stanfields are descended from the ancient Stanfield Family of Britain. The name is Norman and one of theoldest surnames. Yorkshire is the place where the name is first recorded in Britain. Their lands were granted tothem by William, the Duke of Normandy for their distinguished service at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A. D.The family is part of the Vikings who landed on the Orkney Islands and Northern Scotland in about 870 A. D.The name appears in the Domesday Book which is a census of most of England at that time.

There are around forty variations in the spelling of the Stanfield name: Stanfeld, Stansfield, Standfield, as well asStanfield. Jordan Stansfield was the first Lord of Stansfield in the valley of Todmorden and was the son ofWyons Maryons. His son was John who was succeeded by Richard, then Edmund, Ralph, Henry, William, thenThomas in the 14th century. His grandson named Thomas acquired Heptonstall in 1508. Then his grandsonacquired Sowerby in 1587.

When the migration began to America, the Stanfields were among them. There were several early VirginiaStanfields. Symon Stanfield was listed as immigrating to Virginia by Captain Adam Thoroughgood in 1635possibly on the Jon & Dorothy, 1634. He was one of 105 persons who were brought in by the captain whoreceived 5,350 acres in Princess Anne County for his efforts. Lawrence Stanfield was recorded as immigrating in1646 by Elizabeth and Ratchell Robins in Northampton County. The majority of the early Stanfields in Virginiaseem to have been located in Halifax County.

I Robert Stanfield of the County of Halifax being aged and infirm of body, but of asound mind and memory and caling to mind that it is appointed for men once to dye do make constitute andordain this and no other to be my Last Will and testament in manner and form followingViz First my will and desire is that all my Just debts should first be paid by my Executors hereafter named. 2nly. We find the widow Elizabeth Stanfield in Oglethorpe County, Georgia in the 1820 Census. The first record of aStanfield in that county was that of Benjamin Stanfield who signed as a witness to a land sale in 1799. The salewas proved in June 1801. The record is in Deed Book D, 1800-1806, Oglethorpe County, Georgia. There is anEstate File in the same county for a William Stanfield in 1826. There is a Richard Stanfield in Clarke County inthe 1810 Tax Digest. There was a listing of a Samuel Stanfield on the accounts of George Vest, deceased in1799.

Notes for ELIZABETH BEADLES:A will by Joseph Beadles written on 2 november 1813 and recorded 9 February 1814 in Oglethorpe County,Georgia Will Book B leaves property to his son William, his grandson Joseph, a daughter Patsy Dillard, and adaughter Elizabeth Stanfield. He gave all his negroes to his son William: Frank, Sam, George, Ambrose,Rumsey, Daniel, Patrick, Larkin, Willy, Fellis, Pat, and Cynthia. William also got all the land, 262 acres, theywere presently farming and various other household things. Joseph Beadles recieved a mare. The remainder ofthe property was sold at auction and Patsy got one-third and Elizabeth got two thirds of the money.In the 1820 Census Elizabeth Stanfield is living in Lexington, Oglethorpe County, Georgia as head of thehousehold.On page 113 Oglethorpe County, Georgia, 9 March 1819, there is a document of Elizabeth Stanfield to makeWilliam B. Stanfield, both of said county, my lawful attorney, to sign my name to a note as security for GeorgeLester to the balance of debt due to William Elkins as guardian for the orphans of James Garret, deceased, whichdebt is now in suit and to act in said case as I could. It was signed by Elizabeth Stanfield. Test: Joseph Stanfield,Faney (signed with an X) Steavens. Oglethorpe County power of Attorney proved by Joseph Stanfield who sawFaney Stevens witness, 9 March 1819. G. Hudspeth, J.I.C. Recorded 15 March 1819, Isaac Collier, clerk.Joseph Stanfield later sued George Lester and Elizabeth Stanfield for a debt. The court found for the plaintiff fivehundred and fifty dollars with interest and costs. John Felton was foreman.On 31 December 1829, Henry County, Georgia Deed Book G Elizabeth bought 101&1/4 acres of lot #58 inDistrict 3 for the sum of $500 from Lewis Hobgood. It was recorded on 19 July 1834.In the 1830 Census she has 10 slaves and has one small female child living with her. Her son Joseph and hisfamily is living nearby.On October 12, 1834, Deed Book G page 196, Elizabeth Stanfield appointed her son William B. Stanfield as herlawful attorney.The 1850 Census shows Elizabeth as 80 years old and that she was born in Virginia in 1770. She was living withC. Stanfield a female born in 1833 in Georgia. Her marriage bond was in Caswell County, North Carolina.She moved there with her family from Halifax County, Virginia. She and William must have known each other inVirginia and he came to North Carolina to marry her. They lived in Virginia in the early years of their marriagesince the 1850 Census gives Elizabeth's birth state as Virginia and of her two sons, Virginia as well. William B.was still alive for that census and Joseph's son stated his father was born in Virginia on a later Georgia census.In Henry County Register of Sales, Book C, 1839-1858, there was a sale of the property of Elizabeth Stanfield,deceased, on 26 November 1857, by William B. Stanfield, administrator which was worth $803.67. Listed waslivestock, saddle, running gear, household and kitchen furniture, provisions, bed clothes, 1 lot of cotton seed at 10cents a bushel.

5. JOSEPH3 STANFIELD (WILLIAM2, ROBERT1) was born 1795 in Virginia. He married ELIZABETH REYNOLDS 16Feb 1822 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, daughter of JOSIAH REYNOLDS and ELIZABETH BARBER.

Notes for JOSEPH STANFIELD:On 14 October 1833, Henry County Deed Book F, Joseph Stanfield gave William B. Stanfield $5 as payment ona promissory note made by William B. Stanfield and Elizabeth Stanfield for the sum of $600. Land in District 3,lot #75, 202 & 1/2 acres;a Negro woman named Mary, about 30 years old; and a Negro girl named Silvey, about14 years old with dark complexion were the security. Witnesses were Francis Pearson and Jesse Johnson J.I.C.The note was recorded on the same day.Henry County Deed Book G, recorded 14 April 1835, A ruling was made by the Superior Court of HenryCounty, John B. Reid against John W. Payner, Hyram M. Jackson and Joseph Stanfield in favor of Reid. Theproperty of Joseph Stanfield was seized and sold at public outcry. George W. Reynolds was the highest bidderand the property was knocked off to him for the sum of $18. Witnesses were T. S. Crawford and James Love,Sheriff.

This author has not investigated the events leading up to the sale of Joseph's property. The Reynolds who boughthis property was his wife's brother. George W. Reynolds is listed as one of Margaret Barber's grandsons. Isuppose he bought the property to keep Joseph from losing it at auction. Joseph may have been living with hismother in 1840 since there is a female age 70 to 80 living with the family. Or he may have recovered the propertyand she was living with him. I did not search the location of the property. He is not found after the 1840 Census.His wife Elizabeth must have died between the census times also because she is not found either. There is ayoung child found living with the older Elizabeth Stanfield in the 1850 Census. I suspect that she is the youngestchild of Joseph since his mother is probably the 70 to 80 year old female living with him in the 1840 Census.The fact that Abner is living next door to Elizabeth leads me to speculate that he is another of the children ofJoseph.I have also placed Martha in this family due to the records of the Lester Family.

Notes for ELIZABETH REYNOLDS:Elizabeth's grandmother was Margaret Barber as we see by the giving of the slave girl Silvey to ElizabethStanfield her granddaughter. Later we see Joseph using this same slave as security on the note to his brotherWilliam and his wife Elizabeth.

The following is an extract of a will by Margaret Barber of Henry County, Georgia in Wills and Bonds which shesigned on 13 October 1829.I, Margaret Barber make this my last will and testament. To my beloved grandson, Josiah Reynolds, one Negroman named Mat and one Negro woman named Rhoda and her child, Margaret wife of Mat, and one Negro buynamed Burton, also livestock and land. To my beloved granddaughter, Margaret Barber, daughter of my sonRobert Barber, I give her one Negro girl, Sarah Ann. My son George, to his daughter Margaret Barber one Negrogirl named Sinther. To grand daughter, Sarah Johnson, one Negro girl, Clara, To granddaughter ElizabethStanfield, one Negro girl, Sylva. To my grandson, George W. Reynolds, one Negro woman Tempy and her child,Rachel. To grandson Josiah Barber, one Negro boy Crawford. To grandson Wadkins Reynolds, one bed,furniture, and bay horse. Witness Murrell Brissin.In Wills and Bonds of Henry County 1822-1834, page 194, Spenser Reynolds, G. W. Reynolds and JosephStanfield were bound for 7,000 dollars for the condition that Spenser Reynolds administer the goods, Chattles andcredits of Jason Reynolds, deceased, to make a true and perfect inventory of his estate. This bond was recordedon 8 May 1833 in Henry County.Henry County Deed Book H, recorded on 18 December 1837, was the sale of 150 acres on the west half of lot #71, District 3 (Editors note: this is near the property Elizabeth Stanfield bought in 1829.) by James Cox ofMuscogee County to Joseph Stanfield on 4 February 1832, for the sum of $750. Witnesses were James S. Fitnerand Robert D. Wyche, J.P.

There are records of several Barbers in Lexington, Oglethorpe County, Georgia in the 1820 census: George, Jesseand Mathew. There is also a record of a Barber Reynolds in Texas in the 1880 Census who was born in Georgiaand whose father was born in Virginia, although he wasn't found in the records of the family of ElizabethReynolds. Thanks to Margaret's will we have the names of her children and some of her grand-children.

Stanfield applied for a liquor license in 1824 and 1825.The Henry County Deed Book B shows a deed of sale from Joseph Creal to William B. Stanfield of Oglethorpe,Georgia on 5 January 1828 of land in District # for $800. The land joined that of John Todd. The deed wasrecorded on 31 January 1828 and witnessed by Joseph Stanfield and Henry Johnson J.P.The Henry County Deed Book C/D shows the record of sale of 202 & 1/2 acres in lot #175 in District 8 on 20December 1828, from James S. Johnson to Jack A. Johnson of Oglethorpe County for the sum of $100. Thisacreage joins that of James Brown where W. Upchurch now lives. Witnesses were William Hardin, clerk; ByronHood; Lewellyn Morgan J.P.; William B. Stanfield and Elizabeth Stanfield. The deed was recorded on 22December 1828.In the Henry County Deed Book H there is another sale to William Stanfield. John L. Porter of Warren Countysold to William B. Stanfield on 2 November 1837 202 & 1/2 acres, lot #223 for $250. The land was surveyed on16 August 1821, by James Watson, surveyor and granted to the Said William B. Stanfield by John L. Porter on 2November 1837. Witnesses were Andrew Henderson J.P., J. C. Campbell and William Segur. The deed wasrecorded on 8 January 1838.

Notes for ABNER L. STANFIELD:Abner's grave is in the middle of the North end of the Darien Cemetery in a large family plot. On the left isLucinda Frances Stanfield Carter. On the right is a large vault which is probably that of his first wife. Alsoburied here are two other daughters, Becky and Emma and their husbands.

STANFIELD:In Henry County, Georgia Deed Book F page 104, on February 22, 1832, Elizabeth Stanfield for the love andaffection for her grandchildren gave a Negro girl named Rogette about 13 years old to her daughter, Martha D.Lester and her husband George Lester. Witnessed by Joseph Stanfield. For this reason I have placed Martha asthe daughter of Joseph Stanfield. She named her second son William B. Lester and that was probably in honor ofher grandfather.

Notes for GEORGE LESTER:He listed both of his parents as being born in Virginia in the 1880 Census. His occupation was County Clerk andhe had over 6,000 acres in 1860 with 10 slaves. He was living in Lexington, Oglethorpe County, Georgia in the1880 Census.
