114. Sarah Ann8 Shortridge (William7, Richard Benjamin6, Richard Deacon5, Richard4,Richard3, Richard2, Richard1) was born 15 Feb 1799 in Haverhill, Essax County,Massachusetts24, and died 25 Aug 1836 in Lpswitch Jail, Haverhill, Grafton County, NewHampshire25. She married Joseph York 31 Aug 1816 in Haverhill, Essex County,Massachusetts26, son of Jonathan York and Sarah Smith. He was born 21 Sep 1794 in Exeter,Rockingham County, New Hampshire27, and died 10 Jul 1834 in Essex, Essax County,Massachusetts28.

Notes for Sarah Ann Shortridge:Information from: Essex Gazette-Haverhill, Saturday 27 Aug 1836. (NH)Intemperance and suicide

On Thursday afternoon five persons belonging to this village were brought before EsquireParker, four of them for being common drunkards, and or for an assault. The latter was fined, and being unable to pay the fine or surety was committed. The four others were sentenced asfollows: Sarah A. York to the house of corrections, 6 months--Richard Gale, 4 months--Thomas Whittier, 3 months--William Page, 1 month. They were all taken to IpswitchThursday evening and confined in the jail during the night, previous to assigning them theirtasks in the house of corrections. The woman, Sarah York, was placed in a solitary cell. Shewas found about 15 minutes after her arrival hanging by her neck against the door of her cell.It appears that she threaded her shawl through the small aperture of the door through whichprovisions were handed in to the prisoners and passed it around the small door or lid whichusually covers the aperture, and then fastened it around her neck, and then strangled herself bypressing her neck with her whole weight down upon the shawl. When first discovered she wasquite dead. She had been in the house of corrections before, and we understand, has frequentlysaid she would never go there again alive.

Such are the effects of the beastly vice of intemperance. It is only on occasions like thesethat the veil is partially lifted which hides from common observation the horrors andabominations which it creates in our midst. A great proportion of all the vices and degradingpractices which level human beings with the brutes which perish are to be traced to this single

case. One of the men who was carried from this place on Thursday was found guilty ofaggravated assault upon his father, by one of which the ribs of the old man were broken, andhe was otherwise injured. When will sober men-honest=kindhearted men in other respects-cease from furnishing the cause of such atrocities-the poison of alcohol. Have they no regardfor the general welfare of society? No pity for the drunkards family-no compassion for thewife and the child where home once peaceful and happy is converted into and earthly hell!Above all have they no fears being waited upon at the Bar Of Eternal Justice, to answer for thelost soul of the suicide and the murderer lost by their instrument and wit?

(Sarah Ann {Shortridge} York and Jonathan Foster--intention of marriage 25 July 1836 inHaverhill. She committed suicide before marriage)

Notes for Joseph York:Joseph died after drinking too freely of cold water after working in the sun. Probably a stroke,he was only 40 years old, left Sarah Ann with the 6 offspring ages 17 to 2 years.
