    Generation No. 1

    1. JOSEPH5 AKIN (JAMES4, DAVID3, JOHN2, DAVID1)1,2 was born 08 Apr 1761 in Quaker Hill, Dutchess Co., NY, and died 01 Jan 1842 in Kiantone, Chautauqua County, NY2,3,4. He married ELSY HOLLOWAY5,6,7, daughter of WILLIAM HOLLOWAY and SARAH LEWIS. She was born 15 Dec 1760 in Dutchess County, NY, and died 26 Apr 1833 in Kiantone, Chautauqua County, NY8.

Notes for JOSEPH AKIN:Joseph Akin came from Rensselaer to Chautauqua County in 1806 with his large family and in order to reach the place which he had chosen for his residence, he had to make his own road from Griffith's on Chautauqua Lake, (where Jeremiah Griffith Esq., also from Rensselaer County, had just established himself) to Stillwater Creek. Joseph Akin was the first permanent settler on the Stillwater, and lived for some time in an almost unbroken wilderness. Jamestown was not settled until 1810, when the first settler, John Blowers, in the employ of Judge James Prendergast, erected his log cabin near the boatlanding. [Chautauqua Democrat 1/25/1860]

Joseph Akin purchased Lot 29 where his son-in-law, Charles Russell, and grandson, John Howard Russell, now reside. James and Elijah Akin and other sons settled near their father on the Stillwater, lower down stream. [Anderson, Arthur Wellington, "The conquest of Chautauqua, Jamestown and vicinity in the pioneer and later periods as told by pioneer newspapers and personsJamestown, N.Y.", unknown, 1932, 486 pgs., Page 2]

It seems that Joseph laid out lots for a village that he named Akinsville about the time that Judge Prendergast laid out Jamestown, but Joseph would not sell his lots outright, but instead offered long leases to anyone that would improve them. Prendergast, on the other hand, sold his lots on liberal terms and gave clear title, and credited almost anyone. Consequently, Jamestown grew while Akinsville did not. It is believed that but two houses and a blacksmith shop were built in Akinsville - one of the house being Laban Case's tavern. This notion of leases was probably brought from Rensselaer County where most of the land was leased by patroons or other land proprietors. This system was becoming very unpopular in the eastern counties and probably even more so among settlers in the west. [Young, Andrew W., "History of Chautauqua County, New York from its first settlement to the present time with numerous biographical and family sketches", Buffalo, N.Y.?, unknown, 1875, 803 pgs., page 446]

A different slant on this comes from [Edson, Obed, "History of Chautauqua County, New York", Boston, Mass., W.A. Fergusson, 1894, 1014 pgs., p. 942] which says that Joseph Akin was going to build a town of Akinsville, but the survey of the township into lots was not completed and he could not obtain a clear title to the land to sell his lots. In 1814, he abandoned his plan to build a town. He did build a bridge about 1814 on the Stillwater Creek and the first town meeting of Ellicott in 1813 was appointed at "Joseph Akin's house in Stillwater."

In an email written 13 May 2002, Donna Wendt wrote: "I've located the "Akinsville" site of Joseph Akin. It is now called "Stillwater" and is at the site of the intersections of NY roads 60, 49, and 380 just south of Jamestown. Not much is there. A new golf driving range is attached to a home on Road 60. There are a couple businesses, but mostly the country is dairy cows and 200 years ago, I'm sure there were timber stands all over. "

The Chautauqua County GenWeb Site has a listing for Stillwater Cemetery that contains the name of Aury Akin, son of Joseph and Elsie, who died 4/27/1839 at age 24. If true, Elsie would have been 55 years old. Therefore, I doubt the data on this person.

Note, however, that the part of the Town of Carroll where they lived became the Town of Kiantone about 1852. Therefore there is the unavoidable confusion about Carroll versus Kiantone.

Jane Rutherford Smith in an Akin Forum posting states:James M. Akin was my great grandfather, and I have a rather circumstantial trail to his history. A James M. Aikin was born to James Aiken (born c.1812) and wife Elsana in 1850 in South Valley, Cattaraugus Co., NY. When Elsana died, James left his son with an uncle and came to California. A James Akin married Phoebe A. Logan in ElDorado Co., CA on November 3, 1856. In the 1860 Census James Akin was located at Michigan Bar, Sacramento Co., operating a toll bridge, with wife Phoebe and two stepchildren, surname Logan. In 1870 James (Sr.) is again listed as a bridgekeeper, with the addition of a second James Akin, age 20, in the household. On March 24, 18, 1872, James P. Aken, age 60, who had arrived in Visalia from Michigan Bar, died in Visalia. Ina Stiner's 1934 collection of Porterville Genealogies lists James M. Akin's father as James Akin. In 1880 James M. Akin was a boarder in the home of J.A. Kincade in Tule River Township. In July of that year he married Sarah A. Hudson. In 1882, a child named Adell Elsana Akin died at age 10 months.

Notes for ELLIOTT BRATT:In 1870, a young Elliott was living with his parents in Kiantone, Chautauqua Co., NY. In 1880, Elliott was living with his sister, Elizabeth, and brother-in-law, Samuel Woodward, in Windom, Cottonwood, MN. In 1900, he was back in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY married to Nellie M. In 1910, he and Nellie were in Kalispell, Flathead Co., MT. In 1930, they were living in Chico, Butte Co., CA. In the obituary for Frank L. Bratt, Elliott is identifies as living in Ventura, California.

There is no original record of Elliott's birth yet found. We are left with the census ages which vary considerably. The first census Elliott was in was 1870 in which he was listed as being 6 years old which would imply a dob of 1863/4. He is listed as being one year older than his brother Edward. In 1900, both the month and year of birth was given. In Elliott's case, it was Jul 1865. Edward's dob was given as Sep 1866 which means one year between them. This date is very close to the date from the Bradt Genealogy that Donna Wendt and Joyce Bratt came up with for Edward's dob. As a result, I have used the Jul 1865 date for Elliott's dob.

Notes for RHODA AKIN:In an email dated 13 May 2002 Donna Wendt said that Rhoda reared two of her step-brothers (Marshall and Francis] after their mother, Harriet Forbes Akin, died and their father, John Howard Akin committed suicide. She also wrote: "I visited the land of Rhoda Akins and Adams Davis in Bloomfield Twp, Crawford Co., PA -- not far from the Chautauqua Co., NY border. The big farm of Adams Davis and Rhoda Akin runs north from the crossroads up Hwy 8 on the west side. Rhoda is the one who wrote the Civil War Letter -- I think to Marshall [her step-brother who she reared] - when he was about 20 yr. They are in the 1860 census in PA."

    46. PHINEAS HOWARD7 AKIN (JOHN HOWARD6, JOSEPH5, JAMES4, DAVID3, JOHN2, DAVID1)315 was born Abt. 1834 in Chautauqua County, NY, and died Abt. 1904 in Erie, PA. He married PERMILIA TILSON. She was born in Erie Co., PA.

Notes for PHINEAS HOWARD AKIN:An accomplished violinist, he had a 7-piece orchestra and played for all of the local functions. [Some Akin Cousins, p. 96]

From Donna Wendt in an email dated 13 May 2002: "I saw the tombstone of Phineas and Permilia Akin (pg 96) in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery a miles east of their "Tillotson Village" home. The Tillotson crossroads is at Hwy 8 and an East-West road that goes east into Spartansburg - the Cemetery is on this road. Maybe it's Mt Pleasant Rd? It just west above Oil Creek Lake. The big farm of Adams Davis and Rhoda Akin runs north from the crossroads up Hwy 8 on the west side. The inscription for Phineas Akin is only "1833 --- " The Akin book gives birth as "ca. 1834" There is no death date on the tombstone for him. The Akin book says he died in Erie. Perhaps he is buried in Erie. But his wife shares the nice big granite tombstone - it says "Wife Permelia Akin 1840 - 1902" - so perhaps he fixed up the tombstone when she died then he died a year later in Erie and never made it back to the family plot?"

Notes for PERMILIA TILSON:In an email dated 13 May 2002, Donna Wendt wrote: "Permilia was the violinist. Her maiden name is written "Tilson" in the book [Some Akin Cousins], but it might be Tillotson because of all the Tillotsons in the community. Per a cemetery survey Perry Tillotson died 5 May 1864 in the Civil War. Rhoda's Civil War letter mentions Tillotson, I believe, and Adams would be her husband. I don't have the letter in front of me."

Child of PHINEAS AKIN and PERMILIA TILSON is:108. i. HORACE HOWARD8 AKIN, b. 24 Apr 1862, Erie Co., PA; d. 04 Dec 1947, Union City, PA.

He married (1) NANCY UNKNOWN Bef. 1861318. He married (2) SARAH MINERVA ELLS318,319,320 01 Jan 1861 in Wisconsin321, daughter of JAMES ELLS and SARAH SQUIER. She was born 07 Jan 1843 in Riga, Monroe Co., NY, and died 07 May 1936 in near Dodge Center, Dodge, MN.

Notes for DAVID AKIN:David Akins was the one who left Chautauqua Co to teach in Wisconsin. There he met Sarah, a student in his class at Kingston, WI. He developed "lung hemorrhage" and returned to NY and stayed with his brother - John Howard Akins, Jr - I believe - and was invited to "sit in the sun in the apple orchard" He got well and returned to WI to marry Sarah Ells and then they homesteaded in Skyberg, MN. He married ROWENACALE353,354 08 Jun 1871355, daughter of JESSE CALE and SARAH MOREY. She was born 08 Nov 1854, and died 19 Jan 1937.

Notes for DE WITT CLINTON AKIN:Reared by an older cousin, Ransom Akin, son of Edward Akin. [Some Akin Cousins, p. 102] This was also confirmed by Donna Wendt who wrote in an email dated 13 May 2002: "When my ancestor John Howard Akin committed suicide in 1852 DeWitt was an infant. His mother Sally Harriet Forbes died shortly after his birth. He was raised, (adopted?) by Ransom. "

As Lois Schultz pointed out in her manuscript, "We have listened to, and have been very disturbed by the 'old wives tales' regarding who the noither of this man was. Finally, after a long and hard search, we have verified to our satisfaction, at least, that he was the youngest and last child born to John and Harriet Forbes Akin. His mother died shortly after childbirth." Lois points out that the Letters of Administration for the estate of John Howard Akin lists De Witt Clinton Akin as his legitimate heir. The other important evidence is the information in the census records. I have found De Witt in the 1860, 1870, 1900, and 1910 US Census and the 1892 NY Census. All of these cesus records list his age consistant with a birth prior to Harriet Forbes' death in Sep 1851. Of particular interest is the 1900 US Census that documents his date of birth as October 1850, about a year prior to Harriet's death.

Both Daphne Brownell and Lois Schultz show a Ruth Tome born in 1899; however, there is no trace of her in the 1900 census nor in the 1910 census. The only Ruth Tome I can find was born to a different George Tome in maryland, and she married a Henry Funk. I believe that this Ruth Tome is suspect. Use with caution.
