A
HISTORY
Of
COOPER COUNTY,
Missouri
From the first visit by White Men, in February, 1804, to
The 5th day of July, 1876
BY HENRY C. LEVENS AND NATHANIEL M. DRAKE
Luke Williams, a Baptist preacher, was a farmer, and resided about
five miles west of Boonville. He is celebrated as being the first
preacher in Cooper County, having located there several years before
the county was organized
The act under which Cooper county was organized, located the seat of
justice at the town of Boonville. This place was designated as the
place for holding court, by the act under which the county was
organized, which was adopted by the Legislature, and approved during
the year 1818, and entitled an "act establishing a part of Howard
county into a separate county, by the name of Cooper." The
commissioners to locate the county seat, appointed by the Legislature,
were Abel Owens, William Wear, Charles Canals, Luke Williams and
Julius Emmons.
Mrs. Stephens also tells of the first church she attended in the
neighborhood, which was held at the house of one of the settlers. Luke
Williams, the preacher, was dressed in a complete suit of buckskin,
and a great many of his audience were dressed in the same style. She
was so dissatisfied with the appearance of the state of things, in
this backwoods county that she cried during the whole of the services;
but she soon became accustomed to the new order of things, and was
well contented. At that meeting grease from the bear meat stored in
the loft above the congregation, dripped down and spoiled her nice
Sunday shawl, which was a fine one, brought from North Carolina, and
which could not be replaced in this backwoods country.
The Williams tradition claims descendancy from Roger Williams, the
founder of Rhode Island. Matilda's great grandfather, Luke, was the
first preacher south of the Missouri River in Missouri. The family
immigrated to Boonesville about 18 15. Matilda was born 3 miles
northeast of Guthrie, Oklahoma. My grandmother didn't like the wild
frontier. When she received an inheritance, at her father's death, she
moved across the border into Kansas, north of Wilmot.

Do not know the exact dates, however, his son Luke Williams was born
in Aug of 1776 in Va. He lived in VA for the next 20 years for sure
but I'm not sure where. James is my brick wall. He was married to
Martha Murrell. She had two brothers, Thomas and Richard who were
baptist preachers. She died when Luke was very young. James had Luke
train as an apprentice to a drunken blacksmith. That is all I know.
PIONEER PREACHERS WERE INTENSELY EARNEST
Zeal of Elder Luke Williams of Cooper County, Baptist pastor of
Concord, first church organized south of the Missouri and west of St.
Louis, was so great that he was troubled in his soul when he did
unorthodox good on the Sabbath, as did Jesus of Nazareth.
The Reverend Williams, born in Virginia August 5, 1776, settled with
his family, in 1817, five miles west of the present Boonville, farming
in pioneer fashion and preaching nightly and Sundays, without monetary
reward. He carried the Gospel afar.
One Sunday morning before starting for Concord Church, about site
miles south of the present Boonville, Elder Williams was distressed
because his children were crying for food and there was nothing to
eat. A fat buck leaped into his garden. Reverend Williams shot and
dressed it. His wife cooked venison and appetites were appeased.
With heavy heart the pastor went to the meeting-house. Weeping, he
recounted the situation and his act and asked if he had done wrong.
The members voted unanimously that he was right, under the
circumstances.
Luke Williams and James Savage held services at Hannah Cole's Fort,
within the present. Boonville in 1815, 1816 and 1817. Both were Indian
fighters. On May 10, 1817, Elders Edward Turner, William Thorp, David
McClain, Luke Williams, William Savage, C. W. McWilliams and others
formed Concord Baptist Church. A month later Luke Williams was elected
pastor.
1880 Mirabile, Caldwell, MO Census - William S. Williams - Son of Luke
Williams claims his father's birthplace in Kentucky.

LUKE WILLIAMS
1776-1824
Luke Williams, Sr. was born 5 August 1776 in Virginia. He is reputed
to be a descendant of Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island. (See
Kansas City Star, 1 March1953) His father was James Williams, who
married Martha Murrell. She was sister to two Baptist ministers,
Thomas and Richard Murrell. (Duncan, 1882)
R.S. Duncan in his 1882 History of the Baptists in Missouri has
provided a short biography on Luke Williams, Sr. This book is
available in the Western Americana microfilm collection.
Martha Murrell Williams died when Luke Williams was a boy. He was
bound out to a blacksmith named McGlohlin, located some 150 miles from
his home. After about a year, Luke fled from his master who drunk and
abusive at the time. He went home, but his father brought him back to
McGlohlin and had the contract rescinded. After this time, Luke stayed
with his father. Together they spent much time hunting in the early
settlements of Kentucky.
Duncan notes "they had some hair-breadth escapes from the Indians."
Luke Williams married on 9 July 1799 to Miss Mary "Polly" Shropshire.
She was born in 1776, two months earlier than Luke. Duncan (1882) also
provides an entertaining story of how Luke Williams came to be
converted to the calling in the Baptist church. Both Luke and his wife
were fond of dancing. One night, in 1802, while they were on the floor
dancing, Polly Williams became overwhelmed by a feeling of sin. She
took to prayer for guidance, soon after which she became a Baptist.
Shortly after Polly's conversion, Luke Williams was also converted
andbecame a member alongside his wife. They belonged to the Baptist
church in Powell's Valley.
Duncan's biography of Luke Williams does not establish the location of
Powell's Valley. I believe it is the location by that name in the
Clinch River area of Hawkins County in eastern Tennessee, not to far
from where this family moved next - the Clear Fork of the Cumberland
River in Kentucky.
The family located on the Clear Fork in 1804. At that time there was
no settlement within 25 miles. The new settlement had 4 or 5 families
in it. Luke Williams and his family lived here for 11 years. It was
here that Luke Williams was called to ordination. Luke Williams is
shown on the 1810 Census of Kentucky, in Knox County, at 672. At this
time, he had 2 sons under age 10 and 3 daughters under age 10 and 1
daughter between 10 and 16. He and his wife are shown as being born
between 1765 and 1785. They were both actually born in 1776.
In the Fall 1815, the Luke Williams family started for Missouri. They
spent one year in Illinois where Luke rented a farm, made a crop, sold
it, bought some cattle and continued westward to Missouri in the Fall
of 1816.
Arriving inCooper County in 1816, Luke Williams settled on a farm some
5 miles west of the present town of Boonville. Here he built his home
- a log cabin. The History of Howard and Cooper County, at page 703,
notes that Luke Williams lived on Cold Camp Creek.
On the 10th of May, 1817,the Concord Church was organized inCooper
County. This was the first church organized in Cooper County. Luke
Williams was the first pastor. The founding members included his wife
Polly Williams, William Savage, Mary Save, Delaney Bolen, Judith
Williams, Susanna Savage, Charles Williams, Patsey Bolen, and
Elizabeth Williams, among others. The church was located south of
Boonville, about 5 miles. All that remains now is the Concord
Cemetery, which the author visited in 1990 and 1993.
In 1818, Luke Williams was appointed as one of the commissioners to
locate the county seat for Cooper County. The Cooper County voting
record of 1819 notes that both Luke Williams resided in Lamine
Township, which included the town of Boonville.
The 1876 Levens and Drake History of Cooper County, in describing an
early church service, notes "Luke Williams, the preacher, w

W.S. Williams and Julia F. Williams
The tombstone of W.S. Williams is in Corning, MO., cemetery
(correction made in 1/2001 tombstone is located in Corning, Nemaha
County, KS) He died at the age of 69 years, 18 months and 16 days.
Very little is known about this union. William S. served with the
armed forces during the Civil War. He was not heard from for several
years during this time so his wife married or lived with another man,
thus giving John Williams half brothers and half sisters. Apparently
the family was reunited when W.S. returned from the war. I have a
picture of W.S. and Julia taken in their later years.

Notes for JOHN WILLIAMS:
Family History as written by Pauline Wenger Gallant - December 1984
(Daughter of Alta Williams Wenger)
John Williams, father of Alta, was born on a farm near Cameron, Mo.,
Caldwell County, Dec 6, 1856 and died at his home 4 miles west of
Powhattan, Kansas after a brief illness on Sunday morning, April 27,
1930, at the age of 73 years. John's ambition was to become a teacher
so after completing the 8th grade, he attended Campbell College in
Holton, Kansas. He was engaged in teaching a number of years. On
March 9, 1880 he was married to Fannie Baker Estep to which union 7
daughters and 2 sons were born. For 47 years John resided on the farm
where he died. All of his children attended his funeral and he is
buried in the Powhattan Cemetery. I was 11 years old when my
grandfather, John Williams died. I remember him as a man who
respected a sharp mind, who read a lot, enjoyed teaching his
grandchildren to read and sing. His tuning fork, which I have and was
given to me by Aunt Susie just before her death, was the instrument he
used in teaching me my first music when I was a little girl. I
remember him as a fairly tall slender man with white hair, white
mustache, and grey eyes. He chewed tobacco. His teeth were stained
with tobacco juice, but they were his own. He loved to hunt,
particularly coon hunt. When he could not sleep at night, he would
call out his two coon hounds and take off for the woods just south and
east of his house. These treks were frequent trips with him as he was
a man of impatience and nervous energy. As his grandsons grew older,
he would take them hunting with him. One night he invited my dad Paul
to go with him. My dad said to him, "No, I don't want to go. I ain't
lost no coons." I spent much time with my grandparents , walking to
their home after school. No one could make baking powder biscuits
like grandma. She used real butter and cream in blending them, put
them in a heavy iron pan in her big wood stove oven and they would
bake out all golden brown crispy edges and BIG. Gosh, they were
delicious.
John provided the livelihood for his family by doing some farming,
hitching his horse to a one-bladed plow and pushing the plow between
the two handles, the reins were tied around his waist. Grandpa also
sold pelts for $1 each.
Alta remembers that she was "scared to death of dad". She said he
never hurt her. She remembers that her dad loved to study the stars,
and when there was any change in the solar system, he would get the
kids out of bed in the middle of the night to go outside and explain
the phenomenon to them. They would sit on the front steps during this
apparition and "nearly freeze to death". John would get fidgety about
4:00 A.M. every morning, get out of bed and the whole family and make
them get up too. They would all sit around the breakfast table,
kerosene lamp lit, and wait for daylight so they could go to school.
I was torn up when my grandfather died. He had been feeling under par
for several days and on Sunday morning our family drove to his home to
spend the day. When we arrived, he was sitting in his chair in the
kitchen. I followed my usual custom of sitting on his lap and
inspecting his pocket watch. A short time later he had an "attack"
was taken to his bed and died within a couple of minutes. Grandma
stayed right by his side. A doctor was phoned but after he died the
call was cancelled. The undertaker, Mr. Rake of Horton, Kansas laid
grandpa out to rest in his casket in his own parlor, with netting
draped over the upper part of his body. Neighbors came in for two
nights to keep the wake before he was buried. John was not a church
going person but among his papers was found a little note in his
handwriting dated March 3, 1896, "Walk worthy of God who hath called
you unto his kingdom and glory." A little gem he wrote for me one
time was "The purest gem that mortal times afford is a spotless
reputation."
Grandpa kept a green wooden box on top of the kitchen cabinet. Along
with his important papers, he kept his chewing tobacco, a little brown
bag of horehound candy, his tuning fork, and some brown sugar. No one
dared look in his box but he always brought it out to give us a little
candy or sugar.
His mode of transportation was his spring wagon. He used this to
drive to Powhattan for provisions. The Williams family was so large
and so close that this just made up their world. This was a place
where I could go, be received kindly, and made to feel at home. It
was quiet place when just the three of us were there. I shall always
cherish the memory of that warmth and peace.
