Grice was a small community near the Wood and Upshur County lines, name d for John J. Grice who was the first postmaster. He also owned a store i n the community. He and his wife Lucinda Johnson Grice had three sons a nd four daughters. The daughters were Ann, Mary, Sarah Lucinda and Rosa . The story told by a number of family members about Taylor and Eli Tuc ker marrying the older girls and following their deaths, marrying the y ounger sisters, is not all true. Francis Ann married an Echols and move d to Oklahoma. Taylor's first wife was not a Grice, but after her death , he did marry Rosa Grice. Eli Tucker did marry first Mary J. Grice an d following her death he married Sarah Lucinda. His marriages are recor ded in Wood County Marriage Records. Also, see PAF files of the LDS Ch urch.The Tuckers were said to be part German and the Grices part Cherokee, b ut no proof of this Indian heritage has been found by family researcher s.

Sherry Willis Johnson:John J. Grice is buried in Oklahoma. He is said to have gone there wher e his daughter, Ann Tucker Echols, lived to work cutting cross ties. He b ecame ill and died there. He is said to be buried with the Echols famil y members at Holly Creek Cemetery. According to Clive, the Red Riverwa s at flood stage at the time of his death and his body could not be ret urned to Texas. See his family history below.

John Jackson Grice was born about 1834 in Meriwether County, Georgia, o n a farm about five miles west of Warm Springs. He was the oldest child o f William W. and Lucinda Gray Grice who were married in Pike County, Ge orgia, in 1832. The Grices lived on a sixty-eight acre farm which was o ne third of Lot 115, 1828 Georgia Land Lottery, granted to the orphans o f Gabriel Grice, who lived in Walton County. Court records of Meriweth er County show that William was the oldest of three orphans: William, N athaniel and Nancy. William Grice was born about 1810 in South Carolina o r Georgia, and Lucinda Gray was born about 1810 in Georgia. She was the d aughter of Seaborn B. Gray who was a state senator from Tallapoosa Coun ty, Alabama, in the 1840s. Prior to 1850, William and Lucinda moved to C hambers County, Alabama, and by 1860he had followed his brothers, Nathaniel, and Seaborn B. Gray to Tallapo osa County. However, his

John married Lucinda I. Johnston, daughter of Oliver Johnston, on Janua ry 9, 1854, at the home of her father. Lucinda was born about 1833 in J ones or Dekalb County, Georgia. About 1867, John Grice and his father m oved their families to Texas and settled on the east side of Wood Count y. In 1883 John and Lucinda Grice bought a tract of land at Hammel's Ch apel adjacent to their daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Eli Tucker. J ohn built a store and operated it until about 1905. In 1891 a post offi ce was authorized for that area, and it was put in Grice's store with J ohn Grice as postmaster. During the time the post office existed, the c ommunity became know as "Grice" and after the post office was closed, t he name continued to be used. In researching her family genealogy, my w ife, Clarine, and I interviewed Mrs. Florence and her sister, Miss Schr um, inRhonesboro for information on the Florence family. When they discovered t hat I was a great-grandson of John Grice, they wanted to talk about him a nd his store. One of them said, "We knew him better than our own father . Every day after school we stopped at the Grice store to buy candy."

One was a lawyer in Gilmer, I t hink. Mother taught at Rhonesboro when I was in the first and second gr ade, before we moved to Grice. We lived in a house near the Florence's a nd Schrum's. Also, Uncle Jewel Byrd's in-laws, the La Rue's, lived on t he same road which was on the way to the school house.)

Children born to John and Lucinda Grice were: William, born 1855, Franc es Ann, born 1857, and Mary Jane, born 1859 in Chambers County, Alabama ; Sarah Lucinda, born July 4, 1861 and John N., born 1862 in Tallapoosa C ounty, Alabama; Rose Ella, born November 29, 1871 and Edward Gray, born 1 873 inWood County, Texas. William and Frances Ann, who married Sam Echols, m oved to Oklahoma near Broken Bow. Mary Jane married Eli Jackson Tucker i n 1880 in Wood County and died within a few months. Eli then married Ma ry Jane's sister, Sarah Lucinda, and they had twelve children, several o f whom were born at Grice. They eventually settled at Honey Creek in W ood County near the Upshur line.

The twelve children of Eli and Sarah Lucinda Grice Tucker were Icey Dor a Moore, Mary Jane (Mamie) Byrd, Pearl (Pearlie) Moore, William Jackson , George, twins Levi and Leva Killian, Uriah Taylor, Minnie Minerva Sha ffer, Rosa Ritchie (sic Richie), Isaac and Loraine Bennet (sic Lorene B ennett), Mary Jane and her husband, Abraham S. Byrd, owned the Byrd Pot tery near Rhonesboro until they retired and their son John Byrd moved i t to Tyler. In her later years, Sarah Grice Tucker spent most of her t ime piecing quilts which she gaveto her grandchildren. By the time she died in 1944, Sarah had given fou r quilts to each of her sixty or more grandchildren. Rose Ella Grice m arried Uriah Taylor Tucker, brother of Eli, and raised their family in U sphur County. Their children were John, Anderson, Delia Loyless Lona Du nkel (?), Nunie Welchel, Ester Choate, Ella Pynes and probably others. E dward Gray Grice married (1) Hester Elizabeth Young and their children w ere Carl Edward, Mary Lucinda Gist and Lela Frances Williamson. He marr ied (2) Mrs. Maude May Edwards Barker and their children were Edward, G lenover Bryant and Aubra Gray. Lucinda Grice died May 23, 1890, and is b uried in the Grice Cemetery beside her daughter, Rose Ella, and Uriah T aylor Tucker. Lucinda is the only person of the Grice name buried there . John J. Grice died in 1907 while visiting his daughter in Broken Bow, O klahoma. The Red River was at flood state, and his body could not be re turned to Grice, so he was buried on the Echols' farm near Broken Bow.

The author, Huel C. Tucker, is the son of Uriah Taylor and Vera Mitchel l Tucker, and the grandson of Eli and Sarah Grice Tucker. He married Cl arine Smith, daughter of David Franklin and Myrtis Castle Smith of the I ndian Rock community on June 6, 1948. The six sons of Taylor and Vera T ucker are Harold C., Gerald Delbert, Huel Clive, Norman Taylor, Derry E rnest and Stephen Dwayne.---------------------------------------

The records of the National Archives, U. S. Postal Service, Volume 71B, c a 1890-1904, show that John J. Grice was appointed postmaster of Grice o n 28 April 1890. His appointment was extended several times and ended o n 2 August 1901.

GRICE, TEXAS. Grice, at the junction of Farm roads 852 and 1002, twelve m iles west of Gilmer in western Upshur County, was established in the la te 1880s or early 1890s near a heavily wooded area known as the Big Woo ds. The community was originally called Hamil's Chapel for a small Bapt ist church organized not long after the Civil War. Around 1890 John J. G rice opened a store and post office there. The post office became known a s Grice, but the church continued for severalyears to be known as Hami l's Chapel. By 1896 the community had a gristmill and cotton gin, a gen eral store, a wagonmaker, two carpenters, and an estimated population o f twenty-four. A Grice school began operating before 1900, and by 1907 i t had an enrollment of 126. Around 1900 the town also had a saloon. Aft er 1900 Grice began to decline. The Marshall and East Texas Railway byp assed the town, and many community residents moved away. The Grice post o ffice closed in 1905. By the mid-1930s the community had a school, two c hurches, and two or three stores; its population in 1936 was estimated a t twenty. After World War II the Grice school was consolidated with the H armony consolidated school district, and in the mid-1960s all that rema ined of Grice was a church, a cemetery, and a few scattered houses. Mrs. Lucy Eads, pioneer citizen and good woman, died Tuesday, November 7 , at the home of her daughter (this was a mistake, she died at the home o f her grand daughter), Mrs. Charles Douglass, near Arbala at the age of 8 8. She is survived by a number of children, her husband dying many yea rs ago. Funeral services and burial were at Arbala on Wednesday (Novem ber 8, 1933).

Such a valued employee that after he retired they would call him long d istance to ask for his expertise.

Notes for Marion Wayne Lyons:Wayne was born on March 9th 1932 in Ashdown, Arkansas. He was the oldes t child of Walter Lyons and Ruthie Lee (Sewell) Lyons. He attended scho ol through the 9th grade and then quit, sometimes wishing he hadn't. Hi s girlfriend was in school and he couldn't see her very much if he didn 't attend school.

Wayne held various jobs growing up, everything from working in the fiel ds to working at the Basket factory.

About 1949 Wayne moved to Topeka, Kansas. He decided he wanted to marry P atsy (Grice) Nelson. Patsy was in the process of a divorce from her fir st husband, Rudolph Nelson. In Kansas there was a six-month waiting per iod before your divorce became final, so Wayne and Patsy went to Harris onville, MO. and they were married.

Wayne worked at CGF Grain Elevator when he decided to go to Radio and T elevision repair school. He signed up for the course and took most of i t by mail. When it came time for the final test and graduation, Wayne a nd his wife Patsy and their three children went by train to Louisville, K entucky. He passed his finals and graduated from the school in 1958.

For the first several years, Wayne worked for a couple of different tel evision repair shops. He then decided he would open his own shop, "Arki e's TV Service" Arkie's was in business for more than 20 years.

She had a water fight one summer w ith her kids and the fight made its way into the house and they were al l in trouble when Wayne came home.

Notes for Marion Wayne Lyons:Wayne took a correspondence school for TV repair and ran his own televi sion shop most of his career. He loved to take his family on vacation. H e would stay up late at night planning vacations with his youngest son s ometimes. It didn't matter that the vacation was still a year away, the y still had fun dreaming about it. In retirement, he traveled full time w ith his wife Mary Francis Michael in their motorhome. He had a love for t ravel that would never end. Wayne died of lung cancer.


Working for himself enabled Wayne the freedom and the finances to take h is family on many wonderful vacations. They traveled in everything from a D odge Van and a tent to a 16-foot camping trailer and finally a 1958 Che vrolet school bus. With their large family and usually some friends or a nother family coming along, it was always full of fun and surprises.

After Wayne married Mary Francis Crettol, he moved with his youngest da ughter to Lyndon, Kansas. He operated a Radio Shack Store in Osage City , Kansas and also repaired televisions in the back. He loved to play wi th the kids that came into the store to play with all the toys.

Wayne and Mary Francis bought a motorhome and started to travel wheneve r they could. They just loved the freedom to roam wherever they wanted. H e called it "his ever changing picture window."

They decided they would travel full time and they loved it! After about a y ear of full timing they purchased a newer, larger motorhome. Wayne and M ary Francis were living their dream and couldn't have been happier. The y were like a couple of kids, they really were.

Marion Wayne Lyons passed away at his home in Lyndon Kansas, January 14 , 1995. Wayne died of Cancer. He is buried next to Mary Francis in the L yndon Cemetery in Lyndon, Kansas.

Virginia Douglas passed away at Whispering Pines Lodge in Longview on F riday evening, June 19, 2009.

She married Lawrence “L.C.” Douglas in Farmersville on Oct. 7, 1933. He p receded her in death in 1996.

Mrs. Douglas was a homemaker. She was a member of Seymore Church of Chr ist.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Ray Douglas of Sulphur Springs and N orman Douglas of Arlington; one sister, Christine Stroup; six grandchil dren, Janet Spurgeon, Nancy Tramel, Kendall Douglas, Steven Douglas, Ch anda Mockler and Lloyd Douglas; 13 great-grandchildren, Dakota Byker, B ailey Byker, Zachary Mockler, Taylor and Tyson Douglas, Blake Douglas, C aleb Baker, Rachel Spurgeon, Rebekah Spurgeon, Darrell Douglas, Kaitlen D ouglas, Amy Mata and Brenda Kimnmons; and five great-great-grandchildre n.

Never completely figured out why John Stubbs and family moved to C alifornia. Some say it was for his wife's health. Maybe it was just a m ove west thing of the Depression like the Jodes in (Grapes of Wrath). I d on't think John ever returned to Texas--at least, after I showed up. H is children came from time to time, Carl Dean, Shelby, Marvin, Roscoe, M ary Lou and Billy.

John's wife was Lucy Merrell. her brother was 'Mac' Merrell who ow ned the Chevrolet/GMC dealership there in Sulphur Springs. Being a deal er, Mac could order any kind of new car,(Pontiac, Dodge, Ford etc).Eve ry 4-5 years, John would order a Ford or Mercury from his brother-in-la w at 'cost', Harrison would take someone like Allen, or Gregg Harper an d drive the car to Fairfield, visit about a week with John's family and d rive the used car back to SS. Merrell would the sell the trading at ret ail and John got by virtually free as far as cost was concerned.

H owever only one of them lived past the age of five years. She died in 1 907.His second wife was Nannie Waller. Together they had four children of w hich only two lived past the age 2 years old. Nannie died on March 28, 1 928. They were living in Dallas at the time.His third wife was Tillie. This didn't last long. Before 1936 they di vorced. They had no children. In 1936 he moved to Arbala to be near E ster Mary.On October 3, 1936 he married Lillian Inez Douglas. He had one child W A. Inez was 23 when they married. She had one child, Nawana Lee. Wil liam was 62 years old. William was 15 years older than Inez's father.He had his first child at age 23 and he was 64 when his last child was b orn. He had 12 children all together, however eight of them died prior t o reaching the age of 2.He broke his back in 1938. A tree had fallen on him and knocked him in to a river. Inez, who was pregnant with WA at the time, pulled him out a nd up to a road. He had a large round scar in the middle of his back w hich looked like a big hole. I remember SO well in 1951, cause I was 8 and was finally old enou gh to accompany H and 'who-ever' to California. I was so excited that I c old hardly sleep for a week before we were to leave. A day or two befor e leaving time, my throat swelled up and I had the 'mumps'.I watched a H arrison and Gregg, I guess, leave for California in a brand new shiney b lack Mercury and I was eating ice cream. They always sent me back thing s like comic books like Captain Marvel and such as that.

I said earlier, your grandfather was a master farmer. That's all h e knew--apparently, he had been farming since he was a teen. I never go t a straight answer to how far he got in school. I think it was either t he 3rd or 5th grade. His handwriting and spelling was terrible, but you c ould make it out if you tried hard. His math was ok, pretty good in fac t! He didn't know social things and I guess it didn't matter much. Yo u might ask him about the Titanic and he wouldn't know--however Willie L ou didn't know either, and she had been a school teacher! I don't hink t rivia was important in those days?

Harrison was a truck farmer. I'm sure you know what that is but in c ase, they raised vegetables, which were usually perishable, and had to b e 'trucked' to a grocery store or the Dallas Farmers market. Harrison w ould 'peddle' the goods (Tomato/pepper/squash/peas/beans) from a stall a t Dallas market or sell wholesale to packing companies. Potato's (Irish a nd yams) were stored in a 'potato house' and sold during the winter. La ter on, as H became more successful, trucks would sometimes come to our f arm and load the goods.

Harrison sorta knew a guy in the Texas Senate(Wright Patman) I thi nk, and this guy introduced Harrison to another man in the agriculture d epartment. This man would mail Harrison latest farm news and anything t hat might 'sell good' in the upcoming future. Harrison would have a 'ju mp' on the rest of the local farmers this way! For instance, one year w e planted 30 acres of Caster Beans. Farmers came from miles around to s ee this new crop--tall like corn/looked like marijuana!/but with hundre ds of cuckel-burr looking beans that workers harvested like pulling cot ton boles. Next year, every farmer in the area had Caster beans, Harris on had eggplants!! All that to say that he was a step ahead and they co uldn't figure out where Harrison was getting this advance info. haha

My job at 6 was water boy. All the farmers in the area hired Black s to harvest---so did Harrison. They worked by the bushel, pound, quart , pint---whatever they happened to be doing. I had this water bucket an d A white dipper (for the White folk) and A blue dipper (for the Black f olk) and would walk around offering water to either the white or black w orker ---and I learned early to be Very careful not to get mixed up!!! H anding either race the wrong dipper would be Hell!! Even though they bo th handled the dipper with their hands and both dipped out of the same d ipper!!

Later on, when I was about 14---it was my job to go get the "Nigg- --s" (Wow). I had no driver license/no insurance.no seat belts/No sens e!! Could hardly reach the pedals. The workers lived 5 miles up toward S S in a village known as 'Birch Creek". An old Black man and his wife ro de in the front with me---the rest rode in the back of the truck. Old C laude and his wife babysit the young-uns under an oak tree while the re st of the workers harvested. By this time, they had their own water can !! But I remember Old White headed Claude, from years before babysittin g the little ones (and Me) and telling Bible stories and Uncle Remus th ings. I learned more Bible stories from Claude that I ever did anywhere e lse.

The Stubbs' were Democrats, almost to the last one, except in '52 , Maurice, Jamie Lee's husband (he one in the pic holding me and Mike)- --Maurice voted for Eisenhower and the whole family damn near disowned h im. Even Jamie Lee threatened to 'cut him off'...Don't know if that hap pened or not but eventually they all got over him voting for Eisenhower . He said he voted for JFK and LBJ--not sure they believed him? Maybe s o, but they never did altogether trust him again.

I was in the room with Minerva when she died.

Something I noticed, and maybe it's a personal thing, a family thing bu t you didn't include W.A. Cook...It's none of my business, but you are a ware that WA and your mom are 'full blood' siblings? I wasn't sure you k new that? Don't know if HE knows it? you know the old saying, "Mama's b aby--daddy's Maybe"? NO!!



Line Wa and Harrison side by side---their physical traits--mannerisms-- -there will be no "Maybe". It's was always common knowledge around Arb ala---I once saw Harrison talking to WA on the SS square, and later ask h im if WA was his kid----he said , "Yes, but you are too" and when I fi nally met WA in the 80's, it removed all doubt for me!! Like I said non e of my business and I will drop it---just wanted to testify to that fa ct if you were unsure or 'didn't know'.

He preceded her in death in 1983. She was a homemaker and a member of Seymore Church of Christ since 1947. Mrs. Tennison died Saturday, Sept. 25 at Sunny Springs Nursing Home.

She was born in Como on April 19, 1926, to Frank William and Mary Lee D arlin Wood. She married Frank Tennison in Forth Worth on Fed 3. 1954. H e preceded her in death in 1999. Mrs. Tennison was a homemaker.

Ken was born Jan. 25, 1949, in Greenville, son of Bernice and Carl Burk s. He had worked at Reames Market in Cash with his wife Debbie for the l ast several years and was a retired auto mechanic for Rhodes Automotive .

Ken was a member of New Beginnings Fellowship Baptist Church of Sulphur S prings.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Debbie Burks of Greenville; son s Charles Marzek, Jason Beaver, Edward Beaver, Jeremy Griffin and Bryan G ann, all of Greenville; a niece, Christie Darlin of Greenville; grandch ildren Tristion Marzek, Trenton Marzek, Brandon Gann, Drew Gann, and Ch asen Beaver.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother- and father-in-l aw, Mack and Gladys Watson.

He survives. Mrs . Alta Louise Douglas was a homemaker and former co-owner/secretary for K en's Heating and Air Conditioning. Mrs. Douglas was a life-long member o f the Seymour Church of Christ.

Funeral services for Frances Marie Huddleston, age 62, of the Arbala Community, are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 9, 2010, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel. Chase Palmer will officiate.

Interment will follow services in the Arbala Cemetery, with Billy Sartin, Jr., Bryan Sartin, Stephen Dagley, Jimmy West, Aaron Wilkerson, and Gary Henderson serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Autry Darden, Kenneth Douglas, (the late Wyman Darden), Lance Haley, and Clay Bartley.


Visitation will be from 6:00 t0 8:00 p.m., Friday, October 8, 2010, at t he funeral home.

Mrs. Huddleston passed away Thursday, October 7, 2010 at East Texas Medical Center, in Tyler. She was born on December 7, 1947, in Sulphur Springs, the daughter of Billy Wayne and Beulah Faye Petross Douglas. She married Jerry Huddleston, on July 27, 1975, in Desoto, Texas. He preceded her in death in 2003.

Mrs. Huddleston was a retired teacher, with over 29 years of service in the Yantis, Richardson, DeSoto, and Como-Pickton School Districts. She was a member of the Seymore Church of Christ.
