From 1918 History of Mitchell and Worth County: First Settlement: The first to locate in this township were members of the Hart family who came from New York State in the years 1852 and 1853. The party consisted of L. S. Hart, Sr., L. S. Hart, Jr., Hiram, Orin, Charles and Joseph. L. S. Hart and son Orin arrived from Michigan July 5, 1852. The son claimed land in section 31, township 98, range 16, where they erected a log cabin, with a roof of prairie grass. In the spring of 1853, L. S. Hart, Jr. came with his family, including his mother, sister and brother. It is claimed that the Hart family was the first to make permanent settlement in what is now Mitchell County. L. S. Hart the younger built a log house of poles with the bark taken off and using bark for roofing. It had a genuine puncheon floor. His house was in section 36, town- ship 98, range 17. It was here that Maj. W. Hart was born December 13, 1853, the first white child born in the township. L. S. Hart Jr., was the county's first sheriff, and was elected August 7, 1854, served one year and in

L. S. Hart Jr., was the county's first sheriff, and was elected August 7, 1854, served one year and in 1855 was re-elected and again in 1857, serving five years in all. He lived on his claim until 1870, then moved to Osage where after a long illness he died March 25, 1882. L. S. Hart Sr., made a claim in section 32, township 98, range 16, and built on the south side of Spring Grove where he died in 1869. He was an excellent farmer and a noted hunter. Orin Hart died at his father's house of congestive fever October 12, 1854, his being the first death in Mitchell County among the white settlers. Charles Hart settled on the southwest side of Spring Grove and remained until the time of his death in 1898. The son Charles lived at the north of the grove. Joseph Hart settled on a claim at Spring Grove, remained about seven years and moved to Kansas.

The first death was that of Orin Hart, son of Stephen Hart, in the autumn of 1854.

Hart and Nancy Hart-the parents of said Orrin Hart; that said Orrin Hart died in Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa, on or about October----1854, intestate, leaving no wife and no children, he never having been married-as far as known and believed by affiant. That he helped to bury said Orrin Hart. That said Orrin Hart left surviving him, as his sole and only heirs, hie father-Lemuel S. Hart (Sometimes called and calling himself "Lemuel S. and L. S. Hart, Sen") and hie mother-Nancy Hart-to whom (Lemuel S. and Nancy Hart) the property of the said Orrin Hart descended under the law. That, so far as known and believed by me, the said Orrin Hart left no debts and there was no administration had upon his estate."

Notes for Lemuel Stephen Hart:General Notes: The 1925 census for Marion H Hart says his parents were married at Michigan. July 4, 1852: Family arrived in Mitchell county, Iowa according to a source found.2nd source: In the spring of 1853, L. S. Hart, Jr. came with his family, including his mother, sister and brother. L. S. Hart the younger built a log house of poles with the bark taken off and using bark for roofing. It had a genuine puncheon floor. His house was in section 36, town- ship 98, range 17.

L. S. Hart Jr., was the county's first sheriff, and was elected August 7, 1854, served one year and in 1855 was re-elected and again in 1857, serving five years in all. He lived on his claim until 1870, then moved to Osage where after a long illness he died March 25, 1882.

Surviving are her husband, a sister; Mrs. Mary Lohr of Estilline, S. Dak.; a brother, Charles Hart of Osage. Burial was in the Osage cemetery. Press - Oct. 19, 1937] OBITUARY: Leona Blanche (Hart) Kildee, 1876-1937 - Mrs. Al Kildee Died Saturday- Ill Many Years: Mrs. Al Kildee, 63, died at her home Saturday after many years of invalidism. Mrs. Kildee suffered from arthritis and for the past several years has been confined to a wheel-chair. Leona Blanche Hart, the only daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Hart, was born on a farm near Osage, Iowa, Aug. 4, 1876, and passed away at her home in Osage Oct. 14, 1939. She spent all of her life in Mitchell County, with the exception of a few years, during her childhood when the family lived in South Dakota. Her education was received in the Osage public schools. She was united in marriage to Jesse Albert Kildee on May 24, 1901. To this union two children, a son and a daughter were born. Mrs. Kildee was a member of the Methodist Church for a good many years, was a member of the various organizations, and did her share in any community enterprise for civic betterment, as long as she was able. Her mother, Mrs. Sarah Hart, preceded her in death in 1937. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, who with the daughter, Mildred, have given their wife and mother loving and tender care through her long and painful illness; also her son, Richard, and granddaughter, Leona Jean of West Point, Nebr., and her only brother, John Hart, of Charles City. A funeral service was held at the Shelledy funeral home Monday afternoon in charge of the Rev. H.M. Grant, pastor of the Methodist church and burial was made in the Osage cemetery.

Born in 1865 on his parents’ farm near here, he spent his entire life in this community. He was married in 1886 to Mattie Bailey of Osage and they moved 30 years ago to their home here, where he died. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Bert Wilson of Osage, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Lohr of Esteline, S. Dakota. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Champion funeral home in charge of the Rev. John D. Kern of the Osage Baptist church for Charles Hart, 77, a life-long resident of Mitchell county, who died Thursday morning at his home after several weeks illness.
