One of the most difficult decisions in any type of genealogy publishingis deciding when to stop researching the various family lines and when

to publish your findings for others to be able to make use of. Having previously done several other books Ican honestly advise that every possible family line has never been researched by every available avenue. This gets proven more readily with each passing year. New genealogy information becomes available witheach passing day. It is now believed that Man's knowledge and available information doubles every eighteenmonths.

This book is published knowing that it is incomplete. I acknowledge that I have yet to research many of thevarious family branches in this book. A few years ago I wrote Ancestors and Relatives of Reverdy LewinOrrell, IV, which detailed my son's complete ancestry. Some of his direct line ancestors were traced backthirteen generations. This current series of books doesn't go back in time; rather, they come forward. Eachbook begins with one of our son's 'end of the line' direct line ancestor and brings that ancestor's line to thepresent day. Therefore the reader will find our son, Reverdy Lewin Orrell, IV as a descendant in every bookin this series. Obviously, his direct line from the progenitor in each book is very well documented. Some ofthe other descendancy lines from the progenitor have not been researched at all.

W hy then, m ight you ask, is this series of books even being produced, if they are not completely researchedand documented? The answer is quite simple - all of the family trees and branches, all of the genealogy data, all of the various source notes - do absolutely no good to anyone else when they are stored in my computerdatabases, census databases, and file cabinets. W hile it is my intention to eventually work on many of theselines again; I can't be sure that each project will ever be completed. Therefore, while I am young enough, ingood health, and have the necessary funds, I am doing this series of fourteen books. There are several otherfamily lines that are absolutely huge; some have been very well documented by other researchers. There area few other lines that I will be publishing at a later date.

I do not consider myself an expert on any of these lines. Many persons helped me out by researching severalof these lines before me. In all cases I have added to their research. Please note that the notes are notrewritten and polished. The books in this series are intended to aid and assist other genealogists who areinterested in these various family lines.

Each book in this series is published on a very limited basis. A copy of each has been placed in the Libraryof Congress in W ashington, D.C., Daughters of the American Revolution Library in W ashington, D.C., LatterDay Saints (LDS) Family Library in Utah, the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis, Maryland, and theMaryland Historical Society in Baltimore, Maryland.

An index of each book appears in the back. Please bear in mind that only descendants, their spouses andtheir spouse's parents are indexed. Persons mentioned in the various notes are not indexed.

As her father died in 1881 it is probable that shecame with her mother, Margaretha. The death certificate of her daughter Katherina WildensteinerKirmes Engle shows Katie Engle's mother as Ordnung Wetzeldorfner. It is possible that MargarethaOrdnung was really Ordnung Wetzeldorfner or she was Margaretha Ordnung Wetzeldorfner withOrdnung as a middle name and Wetzeldorfner as a surname or it is possible that she was MargarethaOrdnung who married John Wildensteiner and that married a Wetzeldorfner. As John Wildensteinerdied in 1881 it is probable that Margaretha Ordnung Wildensteiner remarried to a Wetzeldorfner.

Johann died 13 May 1881.NOTES for Johann follow: Peasant Johann's daughter Katharina Wildensteiner came to the US in1888 according to the 1900 MD Census. As Johann died in 1881 it appears that he never came toAmerica.

Wetzeldorfner. Cause of death was Hodgkins Disease.

Letter from Tina Wunner, Presseck, Germany, 7 November 1983 to a Mrs. Wildensteiner: Many thanks for your letter. I am finally getting around to answering it. Last summer I had to

guide many visitors. Amongst them was a lecturer from a University in Philadelphia. Ialways mention the Wildenstein ancestors, the ones who built our precious church here.

Concerning the history of your coat of arms, red with white cross beams, there isn't much I cantell you. However, in the later and larger coat of arms, after 1948, the 'Wettritt of Presseck'was added (two horseheads with high held weapons). A brief explanation of the Wettritt ofPressech (Horserace of Presseck) follows:

For decades there was a conflict between the Evangelical (Protestant) and Catholic churches.Your ancestors joined the Protestant church, therefore the church in Wildenstein wasProtestant. But the first Bishop of Bamberg (Catholic) repeatedly sent soldiers to the churchto exert his influence. It was not enough and the church remained Protestant. To settle thedispute over whether it should remain Protestant or become Catholic, it was decided to havea race between two horsemen from different points of the church. A Catholic horsemanraced from the Castle of Elbersreuth and a Protestant horseman raced from the Castle ofWildenstein. The rules were that whoever reached the church first would establish thechurch denomination. Both horsemen arrived at the same time, but the Protestant broke awindow in the church and threw his hat inside. It was therefore determined that the churchshould be Protestant.

The Protestant horseman was a man whose last name was Frank, and he went with the lastWildensteiner, of Castle Wildenstein, to Kulmbach. Sons of Frank stayed here and ownriding estates. A woman of Frank's generation was the wife of my great uncle. In Frank'scoat of arms, the Wettritt of Presseck is also included. It is smaller then in the WildensteinerCoast of Arms however, because Frank was ordered to participate in the race for theWildensteiners.

Copies of this background are not available, but I can tell you a little about it. Excerpts include: Ernest Rudolf of Wildenstein died in 1563. He built the choir loft in the church and had the walls

covered with paintings. We inherited a handmade chalice which we still have. People whoare descendants of the canmaker employed by your ancestors came by and took pictures ofit. On the crypt of Christoph of Wildenstein (father of Rudolf) a crossflower in sandstonewas discovered in 1960 during restoration work. At the time it was a high honor to have acrossflower on a tombstone. Only the bottom part of the cross remains and it is too bad thatthe upper part is lost. The cross is fastened to a wall. I always point it out to the people Iguide as anyone buried with a crossflower was a very prominent person. Ancestors of theWildensteiners are also buried in the church in Marktredwitz.

Page 3 explains the paintings on the wall of the church - all holy pictures. During restoration askull was found. It is believed to be of Anna Von Wilderstein, nee Nufflinger, who died in1516 because her tombstone was found on top. In the meantime I heard of a forester namedWildensteiner and will inquire about his ancestors.

Also have a hard copy of the following Wildensteiner information: Approximately 3 1/2kilometers south of Presseck lies the summer resort Wildenstein. Upon the so calledWildenstein Cliff, which climbs up the Steinach Valley in two steep and jagged terraces andis only accessible from the village, stood at one time Wildenstein Castle. Now only a fewovergrown, crumbling battlements and earthworks are visible. The stones of the ruins werecarried away by farmers and used to build or repair their homes. The castle could not havebeen large, since the two cliff tiers provided too little room; however, this made the positionso much more commanding. Below the castle lay the Steinach ravine formed by theWildenstein and Steinach cliffs, and which, according to an old myth, the god Thor createdwith a blow from his magic hammer so that the river could continue freely.

The Wildensteiner family has long since died out and only the name of the town Wildenstein, thegravestones in the churches at Presseck and Grafengehaig and documents remind of it. Yetstill vivid in the local memory is the myth concerning a Wildensteiner man and thegravedigger's daughter. According to legend the old Wildenstein cemetery, which laybetween the castle and the village, holds the remains of the squire of Wildenstein and his

Page 9: Descendants of Conrad Wildensteinerwvancestry.com/ReferenceMaterial/Files/Descendants_of...Margaretha also married Jakob BECK 20 Jun 1882, in Waldbuch, Germany. He was born 3 Apr 1856,

lover, a poor, but very pretty daughter of a gravedigger. Both wished to marry, but thesquire's father would have none of it. At a rendezvous in the cemetery he surprised the pairand struck them down in a fit of rage. Their bodies were buried in an out of the way cornerof the cemetery. Still today one is supposed to meet the lovers at their grave at the midnighthour. Excavations in 1911 confirmed the existence of this cemetery.

The founder of the Wildensteiner line was Nicholaus von der Grun. His descendants calledthemselves Wildensteiners von der Grun (wild rocks of the green) and beginning about 1400generally became known as Von Wildenstein. They were of the same lineage as theReitzensteins and like them had the coat of arms of a silver diagonal on a red field. TheWildensteiners, Reitzensteiners, and the Radeckers, who stemmed from a common ancestor, held at the beginning of the 14th century an extensive and continuous estate in the northforest, which presumably included basically the Presseck and Schwarzenback jurisdictionwith the Schwarzenstein fortress, then Naila with the farmsteads of Marlesreuth, Selbitz,Culmitz, and the Radeck Castle. From a 1318 Document we know that Bishop Wulving(1304 - 1318) granted Nikolaus von der Grun the rights to the Castle of Wildenstein with thevillages Rutzenruth, Braunersreuth, Grafengehaig, Dietmarsreuth. However, it is uncertainwhether the castle was built in 1318 or earlier. Likewise, an entry in a book of feudaltenures, dated 1343, states that Albert von Waldenfeld relinquished to Nikolaus in return foran annual fixed supply of weapons (tools) from his forge. The Wildenstein forge forweapons was, therefore, already in operation. According to an old legend, it was to havebeen established by Thor. The Castle of Wildenstein, which was the seat of authority forWildenstein - Presseck, did not last long. Disputes about the capital court as well as aboutthe extend of the duty to open up the fortress were evidently the occasion of a schism withthe Bishop of Bamberg. The latter knew well how to profit from the financial difficulties ofthe Wildensteiners, in that he settled a debt of the Wildensteiners to Hans Schlegler in theamount of 3000 pounds and moreover, discharged further 3500 pounds to the fortress. TheWildensteiners had to leave the castle and mortgage it to the Bishop. Not until 1395 couldhe redeem it under the condition 'he should wait upon the bishopric with it and keep openhouse to all in distress and wars, and all watchguards of the tower and all guards, whichConrad Wildenstein von der Grun and his heirs have and acquire, shall swear to that, to opento us and ours as often as we are in distress...'.

Konrad von Wildenstein was a son of Nikolaus. As long as his castle was mortgaged, he livedon his estate in Naila. (from Reitzenstein, family history, p. 268). At the time of the peasantrevolt Jorg von Wildenstein possessed the fortress above the Steinach. He died in 1533without heirs. His brother Erhard followed him; however, he had his residence in Presseck. With his brother Jorg and a part of the Franconian nobility, he was involved in theAbsbergisch trade. After his death (1554) his son Frederick William took over theWildenstein, but he later transferred his residence to Elbersreuth. The Wildensteiners fellinto debt and after Frederick William died, his creditors took possession of Elbersreuth. Hisbrother Hans Pankraz did take over the feudal tenure, but he had neither property norenjoyment. He too died in 1592 and with him finished the oldest line of the Wildensteinfamily (Reitzenstein, family history, p. 276).

In the course of the years and decades the debt became increasingly oppressive. To save thefeudal estates, which had fallen to ruin, from total destruction, but on the other hand to freethemselves from the unattainable burden of debt, the Wildensteiners carried on the sale ofthe entire Presseck jurisdiction with the castles and manors of Wildenstein, Schlopp,Elbersreuth and Heinersreuth and all the villages, farms, woods and mills belonging with it.By 1690 they offered the possession to Karl Frederick Voit von Rieneck for 56,000 florins,360 florins (Leyhauf?) and three large measures (800 - 1,800 liters measure depending onlocality) of Wurzburger wine of 1688 vintage as payment, but eventually sold to the primebishop Marquard Sebastian von Bamberg on the 8th of July, 1693. Not until October 1, 1697did Karl Frederick Voit von Rieneck acquire the whole Wildenstein estate from the hand ofthe bishop. Count von Rieneck's official staff resided in the Heinersreuth Castle. The castlesat Schlopp and Elbersreuth were left to decay. Among the overseers the severe Johann JakobSiebenfreud is still alive in the folk memory today and the legend has condemned him toeternal restlessness because of his harsh rule. It lets his ghost wander over the crossroads and

startle woodsmen and travelers with his titterings. On his own burial day, so goes the tale,to the shuddering of the mourners, he loudly made fun from the castle window of theclergyman during the benediction. When they wanted to reassure themselves and opened thecoffin, they found an old broom instead of the corpse.

In 1806 the jurisdiction of Presseck was annexed to the kingdom of Bavaria and a new sovereignjurisdiction was erected in 1812. After the death of the last Rienecker in 1823 theWildenstein dominion reverted back to the Bavarian crown. On September 12, 1823, KingMax Josef I granted it from now on the Heinersreuth knight to his financial minister BaronMaximilian von Lerchenfeld as proof of gracious acknowledgement of his services renderedin an important position with effort and full devotion and loyalty. The sovereign jurisdictionwas abolished and a patrimonial jurisdiction of second class was established, which wasdeeded to the state in 1834. Thus vanished the last rest of the former Presseck sovereignjurisdiction.

Very close to the little Wildstein castle Manimilian von Lerchenfeld built in the years 1824 -1827 a castle, which with its simple style fit very nicely in the landscape. It sits on a semiround terrace, which rises gently from the so called Leichbrettergraben (ditch of the boardsof the corpse ?) and which gives view to the street Helmbrecths - Presseck. The onlydecoration of this ordinary rectangular building are the coat of arms of the Wildensteinersand Lerchenfelds. Mighty linden trees, chestnut trees and ash trees give a frame to thepicture, lavender colored, white and red rhododendron groups however give the color.Maximilian von Lerchenfeld died in 1843. The Heinersreuth fiefdom on August 30, 1920,came under the law for dissolving feudal estates; but only in the year 1926 did theimplementation of the dissolving start. It was finished in July 1928. The part of the estate, which did not fall under the reversion to the state, was taken out of the feudal estate bond andchanged into free property. During the time from 1921 to 1923 the old little WildensteinCastle was enlarged through additions and reconstruction according to the plans of thearchitect Resislinger, Bayreut. A wonderful open stairway leads to the palace terrace and tothe main entrance, which is decorated with the Lerchenfeld coat of arms and with the numberof the year 1922.
