Until recently we assumed Joshua's and Martha's parents (or, more likely, grandparents) were born in England, and perhaps came to America as indentured servants. Some additional information is now available, and there are a number of theories about the earlier families. We know there were other Wall families in Virginia in the time period (a few are shown on page 4a-2) but we haven't been able to connect them definitely with our family. Although we may never be able to find reliable evidence, we find it intriguing, so we continue to search. In the meantime, however, we’re not delaying this issue of All-People. It is said that Joshua had military service, but we don't know details. We don't know when he died; it's been said that he died about 1728, but that can't be correct unless there is some mistake about the two youngest children. BIRTHPLACES for Joshua and Martha and their children can be confusing. Family researchers know that references to early locations (for births, deaths, marriages, etc) are often expressed in terms of present day boundaries. It can be hard to pinpoint the contemporary ones; counties were created, and their boundaries changed, as population increased. Sometimes, events may be shown as occurring in more than one place, even though the family itself may never have moved. In our case, we think they probably did move at least once, but this idea cannot be supported solely on the basis of stated birth locations. Other times, different locations seem to be given for the same early event. For example, Joshua's birthplace is said by some as Prince George Co VA and by some as Brunswick Co VA, yet Prince George wasn't formed until 1703, and Brunswick not until 1720, so Joshua must have been born in Charles City Co. Martha is said to have been born in Dinwiddie Co, although Dinwiddie wasn't formed until 1752, so she would also have been born in Charles City Co. All this still doesn't tell us exactly where in the area they lived! BRISTOL PARISH, which includes Petersburg, is in the northern part of Dinwiddie Co. The Parish was created in 1643 along the Appomattox River, in Charles City Co. Prince George Co was created in 1703 from the part of Charles City Co south of the James River. Brunswick Co was created from the southernmost part of Prince George Co in 1720, and Dinwiddie Co from the southern part of the remainder of Prince George Co in 1752. A. Joss 2 (Joshua?) Wall was born 21 Feb 1723, and was christened 20 Jun 1723. We assume the delayed christening dates for Joss and his siblings were due to the parents' inability to travel to the parish church earlier, due to illness, bad weather, etc. Also, clergy were in sufficiently short supply that services might be available only occasionally in the outer parts of some parishes. Joss may have married Martha Vaughn, daughter of Richard Vaughn, whose father was William Vaughn. B. JOSHUA WALL (b c1697) and MARTHA [WALL] (b c1701)Joshua's and Martha's parents are not known to us

Note 1: material in smaller type is written by Barbara Ann Fisher (BFE), wife of Karl Frederick Edler Jr (KFE),while larger type material is primarily from our family history database maintained by KFE.

Note 2: names of direct ancestors of BFE are underlined.Note 3: we are not certain of the birthdates of some of the children and later descendants of Joshua and Martha,

so the birth order in the families may not always be correct.

I. Joshua 1 Wall , born about 1697 Charles City Co VA, married Martha [Wall]; at least six children, probably all born Bristol Parish, Prince George Co VA. Martha was born about 1701.

We don't know when he died; it's been said that he died about 1728, but that can't be correct unless there

is some mistake about the two youngest children.

A. Joss2 (Joshua?) Wall was born 21 Feb 1723, and was christened 20 Jun 1723.

B. Isham2 Wall, born 25 Nov 1724 and christened 30 May 1725, married Agnes [Wall]; at least four children: Jessey, Henry, Edmund, and John.2

Isham's will was probated in Halifax Co VA Oct 1777.

C. Henry 2 Wall , born 3 Jan 1726, married Hannah [Wall] -- see page 4a-3. Rev 06/05, 12/05, 08/06

D. Winifred2 Wall, born 20 Jan 1728, married Henry Ledbetter Jr.

Our cousin Robert Marshall "Sonny" Turner recently shared the following information, from a book about the Ledbetter family.6 Henry Jr was born 1739 Brunswick VA, son of Henry Ledbetter Sr and Edith Williamson. Henry Jr and Winifred (Winnefred?) had two daughters:

Mary Ledbetter married William Gray.Winnefred Ledbetter married William King.

E. Frances2 Wall was born 11 Oct 1733 and christened 24 Mar 1734.

F. Martha2 Wall was born 23 Aug 1741 and christened 11 Apr 1742.

SOME EARLY WALL FAMILIES IN VIRGINIA

More information is now available about early Wall families in Virginia, including a few in the same general time and place as our Joshua and Martha. There are several men5 who could possibly be brothers of Joshua, but we haven't been able to connect them, their families, or their ancestors, definitely with our family.

At least one researcher, S J Logan,101 theorizes (from 1704 Virginia rent rolls) that our Joshua Wall was a son of Henry Wall, born about 1670, and that Joshua had a brother, John Wall, born about 1690. John had nine children: Martha (c1720), Burgess (22 May 1722), David (12 Jun 1725), Mary (13 Dec 1726), Robert (c1728), George (c1730), John (c1732), Ann (c1734), and Charles (c1736). Some of these names and dates are close to what we show below.

We are intrigued with the possibilities of more connections in early Virginia. For example (based on legal papers in Charles City Co VA102), on 23 Aug 1643 John Wall patented 1791 acres on Chippoakes Creek, adjacent to John Claye and John Fraeme, so we know these families knew each other. See Section 3b for a little information about the Frame/Fraeme family, including the 1656 marriage of Mary Frame, daughter of John Fraeme and Anne Clay, and William Justice (great-great-grandfather of Elizabeth Justice, who married William Pickard).

Various sources refer to a land transaction of Isaac House, witnessed by John Wall.101 See Section 1 for marriages of some of Isaac’s children with some of Jacob Short’s.

With the hope that it could be helpful to a future researcher, we're listing a brief summary of what we had found previously. Please read it for interest only.

John Wall (b 1696) married Ann [Wall].David Wall (12 Jun 1725) had son David Wall (b c1771).*Mary Wall (13 Dec 1726).John E Wall (b 1738) had son David Wall (b 1780).

William Wall (c1696-1751) married Ann [Wall].Elizabeth Wall (6 Sep 1723).Drury Wall (Jul 1724).an unnamed child (25 Dec 1726).

** Daniel Wall (b c1698) married Amey [Wall].Daniel Wall (25 Mar 1726).Martha Wall (23 Jun 1729).Mary Wall (23 Aug 1731).John Wall (10 Dec 1733).

** Daniel Wall married Ann [Wall].Richard Wall (19 Apr 1724).

* We wonder if this could be the David S Wall who married Rebecca J Short, Section 1. We think his middle name mayhave been Scoggin or Scoggins, because David Wall (1725) is said to have married Martha B Scoggin.

** These two men may have been the same person, whose wife's name was recorded variously as Amey and Ann, and whose oldest child was Richard Wall.

HENRY WALL (b 1726) and HANNAH (BATES?) (b c1730) and their descendantsfrom page 4a-1

Henry's parents were Joshua Wall and Martha [Wall]Hannah's parents were John Bates and Elizabeth Alford

C. Henry 2 Wall ,3 born 3 Jan 1726 Bristol Parish, Prince George Co VA,4 may have married Hannah ( Bates ?) ; eleven children born Dinwiddie Co VA. She was born about 1730.5 Her parents were John Bates and Elizabeth Alford.97 After Henry's death, Hannah married Peter Thomas 23 Nov 178911

Brunswick VA.

We recently found the possibility of Hannah’s surname and parents, but don’t know anything else about her. When Hannah and Peter married, Thomas Stegall was surety. Section 1 includes some connections between the Stegall and Short families, who were probably neighbors.

Peter Thomas was apparently well off, owning eight slaves according to the 1782 Mecklenburg Co VA census. We cannot be sure but believe he and Hannah were able to help some of Hannah's children and grandchildren financially, especially the grandchildren who survived the death of Hannah's youngest child, Thomas Meredith Wall (TMW).

We assume Peter had been married previously, but don't know anything else about him or his children other than his son Peter Jr, who married Hannah's daughter Martha in 1795, page 4a-4.

1. Joshua3 Wall, born about 1752, may have married Pamela Richardson as his second wife, and may have had son Theophilis.

We believe he was the Joshua Wall who became guardian 14 Jul 1800 of two of the children of John Short and Edith Wall, Section 1.

Joshua may possibly be Edith's father. Or, perhaps more likely, she may have been a granddaughter of John Wall, William Wall or Daniel Wall, mentioned on page 4a-2 as possible brothers of our earliest Joshua Wall.

2. Henry3 Wall, born about 1754, may have married Alice Short, daughter of Jacob Short and Mary Freeman, Section 1.

3. Hannah3 Wall, born about 1756, married Isham Davis.

4. Lucy3 Wall, born about 1758, married James Vaughan.

5. Peter3 Wall, born about 1760, married Sally Daniel.

On 14 Jul 1800, Sally's brother Thomas Daniel became guardian of one of the sons of John Short and Edith Wall, Section 1.

We don't know when Peter and Sally were married. It has been said he married Mary Mize 19 Dec 1787 Brunswick Co VA; we don't know whether this was before or after his marriage to Sally.

6. John3 Wall was born about 1762.

John is said to have married Lavina Cole 22 Jun 1807 Brunswick Co VA, and Lucretia Mize 2 Nov 1808 Brunswick Co.

7. Molly3 Wall, born about 1764, married (--?--) Valentine.

8. Sally3 Wall, born about 1766, married David Vaughan.

We don't know whether David was related to James Vaughan, who married Sally's sister Lucy, page 4a-3, or to Martha Vaughn, who may have married Sally's uncle Joss Wall, page 4a-1.

9. George3 Wall, born about 1770, married Martha House 28 Jan 1795.

Martha testified for herself that she was over 25 years old at time of marriage. Henry Wall was bondsman; he was probably George's older brother (their father was no longer living).

We have some information about the House family in Section 1. There were several marriages between the House and Short families, but we are not sure what the relationship, if any, of Martha to those families may be.

10. Martha3 Wall5, born about 1770, married Peter Thomas Jr 5 Nov 1794 Brunswick Co VA.11,14 His father was the second husband of Martha's mother. Peter Sr acted as surety when Peter Jr and Martha were married.

11. Thomas Meredith 3 Wall , born 6 Aug 1778, married Elizabeth Hardaway Short -- see page 4a-5.

Elizabeth's sister Mary F "Polly" Short married George Stegall in 1799, Section 1. George may be related to Thomas Stegall, surety for the 1789 marriage of Hannah [Wall] and Peter Thomas.

Elizabeth's sister Rebecca J Short married David S (Scoggin?) Wall 3 Jul 1805, with George Stegall as bondsman, Section 1. David has been suggested as a twelfth child of Thomas Meredith Wall, but we haven't found supporting evidence. We agree that he surely must be a relative, but think he is probably a child or grandchild of the John Wall mentioned on page 4a-2.

THOMAS MEREDITH WALL (b 1778) and ELIZABETH HARDAWAY SHORT (b 1781)and their descendants

from page 4a-4Thomas' parents were Henry Wall and Hannah [Wall]

Elizabeth's parents were Freeman Short and Jane [Short]

11. Thomas Meredith 3 Wall ,3,5,15 the eleventh and youngest child of Henry and Hannah Wall, was born 6 Aug 1778 Dinwiddie Co VA. He married Elizabeth Hardaway Short 3 Oct 1797 Mecklenburg Co VA; eleven children born Mecklenburg Co. Her parents were Freeman Short and Jane [Short]. Thomas died 12 Aug 1813 Mecklenburg Co, age 35. Born 5 Mar 1781, Elizabeth died 2 Sep 1857 Carroll Co TN, age 76.

NOTE: For brevity in this document, we refer to Thomas Meredith Wall as TMW.

TMW and Elizabeth lived in Mecklenburg Co VA, probably not far from the North Carolina border, and had eleven children in less than 16 years. We have visited this area, and it is beautiful. Alas, we couldn't find where they lived; much of the area is now under the waters of Bugg Island Lake (also called Kerr Reservoir).

TMW's MILITARY SERVICE35 -- He was a private in Capt John J Moore's Co of Infantry, 98th (Green's) VA Militia, during the War of 1812. He was on the company muster roll 5--31 Jul 1813, and was paid $6.93 for 26 days served at the rate of $8.00 per month. He became ill with yellow fever and died 12 Aug 1813 in Mecklenburg Co VA, age 35, less than two weeks after he was discharged.

His widow was left with the 10 surviving children, ages 8 months through 14 years. We don't know how the family got along after the death of the father but think it likely that some help may have been received from TMW's mother and stepfather. We know that, thirty or so years later, Elizabeth appealed to the government for a widow's pension. Although it was denied, she continued to appeal, unsuccessfully, until she was in her seventies. (Our cousin Jane Peake Kirkpatrick Wall discovered the pension application in the National Archives.)

ELIZABETH'S LATER YEARS -- After selling the family homeplace of 98½ acres 26 Feb 1844,21 she moved west to Carroll Co TN with some of her children, including Thomas Meredith Thweatt Wall (TMTW), and evidently stayed there after he and his family moved east to DeKalb Co TN. See page 4a-18 for more about these family moves.

In the 1850 census of Carroll Co, she is shown as living with her daughter Nancy. Elizabeth died 2 Sep 1857, age 76. We didn't know until a few years ago that there are descendents of TMT and Elizabeth still living in Carroll Co today.

THE NAME THWEATT -- The frequency with which the name Thweatt (pronounced "Threet") appears in the Wall family is intriguing. It seems likely that there may have been a Wall-Thweatt connection prior to the 1875 marriage of TMTW's daughter Roanne Williamson Thweatt Wall to William Giles Thweatt, page 4a-31.

ELIZABETH'S MOTHER'S NAME -- Another intriguing item we are trying to explore further has to do with the maiden name of Elizabeth Hardaway Short's mother. It is possible that the mother's name may have been Jane Hardaway, and possible that Jane Hardaway's mother was (--?--) Thweatt.

In a genealogy listing of a Hardaway family in Virginia, we found the name of one man, Thomas Hardaway Jr (c 1715-c 1782), who married Agnes Thweatt in 1737. It is possible that this couple may be the parents of Elizabeth Hardaway Short's maternal grandmother.

If true, it could explain various suspected connections. It would also enable us to extend this line back at least to the early 17th century, to the possibility of another immigrant ancestor (extensive Thweatt information is available, but so far we haven't found a definitive connection).

a. Nancy Hardaway4 Wall was born 19 Jan 1799. She was probably a widow with two children when she married John D Singleton 22 Oct 1836 in NC. She and John had three children. They moved to Carroll Co TN about 1844-45, along with Nancy's mother and some of her siblings.

i. Rebecca5 Singleton, born about 1825, married Richard Thomas; at least nine children: William Bennett, Charles Henry, Mary Anne, John Columbus, Richard Jr, Isiah P, Tabitha Saphronia, James, and G David. Richard Sr was a brother of Tabitha Thomas, page 4a-10.

Richard and Rebecca became great-great-grandparents of Robert H Allen,2 who has provided much information on Singleton and related families.

ii. John5 Singleton, born about 1827, married Margaret Autry; at least five children: Martha, Rebecca, Isham, John Franklin, and Robert.

iii. Caroline5 Singleton, born about 1836, married Josiah Bateman.

iv. James Wyatt5 Singleton was born about 1838.

v. Sarah5 "Sally" Singleton, born about 1840 (or 1842) in TN, married James [--?--].

b. Henry Freeman4 Wall, born 3 Apr 1800, married Nancy [Wall]. He married Fannie M Hill 23 Feb 1826. He died about 1833, age about 33.

c. Thomas H4 Wall was born 26 Jan 1802. He died 16 Nov 1803, age 21 months.

d. Rebecca Ann D4 Wall, born 3 Sep 1803, married John Vaughn 10 Mar 1819 Granville Co NC. Secondly, she married Andrew W Simpson.

Rebecca and Andrew were living in Carroll Co TN before her mother moved there in 1844-45. Rebecca is shown in the 1870 census as single, living in the household of her brother John H Wall.

e. Frederick S4 Wall was born Nov 1804. He died 27 Mar 1819, age 14.

Robert Allen has related a story from Martin Onnie Wall, about Frederick's death in a riding accident. He had been warned not to try to ride a race horse but, unfortunately, did so with tragic results.

f. Marion4 Wall, twin of Solomon, was born about 1805, and probably died at birth or soon afterwards.

g. Solomon4 Wall, twin of Marion, was born about 1805, and probably died at birth or soon afterwards.

h. Jane H4 Wall, born 9 Feb 1806, married George B Hatch -- see page 4a-7.

i. Elizabeth E4 Wall, born 13 Dec 1809, married James Wade Burton -- see page 4a-8.

j. John H4 Wall, born 10 Mar 1811, married E Tabitha Thomas -- see page 4a-10.

k. Thomas Meredith Thweatt 4 Wall , born 12 Dec 1812, married Elizabeth H Clack , Melissa Jane Jones [Pike] [Lassiter], Rebecca Elexandra and Nancy E Fletcher [Calwell] -- see page 4a-11.

TMTW was the eleventh child of an eleventh child! Much of the rest of this Section, and all of Section 4b, consists of information about his descendants.

h. Jane H4 Wall3, born 9 Feb 1806, married George B Hatch 28 Aug 1826 Warren Co NC; eleven children, the first two born in NC and the others in TN. George was born 28 Nov 1808 Orange Co NC. His parents were Thomas Hardaway Hatch and Cinthia Brewer.

THE HATCH FAMILY -- A house carpenter, Thomas Hardaway Hatch was born 26 Jun 1761 Hatcher's Run, Dinwiddie Co VA. He married Cinthia Nov 1802 Orange Co NC, and they had one other son, William Hardaway Hatch (born about 1804 Dinwiddie Co VA). Thomas married Mary Bynum 1818 Orange Co NC.

When "aged and blind", he moved with his son William from VA to TN in 1844. He was living with William and his family in 1850, and died about 1868 Carroll Co TN, age about 107.

Thomas' parents were Henry Hatch and Sally Baird. Henry was born about 1740 and died about 1776 Dinwiddie Co VA, age about 36. He and Sally had one other son, Alexander Hatch (born 15 Nov 1764 Dinwid-die Co). Alexander married Rhoda Snipes 4 Dec 1793; ten children. Born about 1765 Brunswick Co VA, she died about 1845 Orange Co VA, age about 80. He died 18 Apr 1850 Orange Co, age 85.

We would like to know the origin of Thomas Hardaway Hatch's middle name, which is the same as Jane H Wall's mother's middle name. Earlier connections between the Wall and Hardaway families seem likely.

i. John H5 Hatch was born about 1829.

ii. Cynthia E5 Hatch, born about 1832, married William F Rainey; eight children: Martha J, James M, Andrew J, Elizabeth H, Nancy V, William G, Cynthia J, and Hollis (Alice?) Jane. Born 23 Jan 1830, William F died 3 Jun 1899, age 69, and was buried New Hope Cemetery, Yuma TN.

Henry is said to have killed a traveling salesman and thrown his body down a well.

iv. James H5 Hatch was born about 1835.

v. Benjamin F5 "Doc" Hatch, born 11 Feb 1837, married Eveline [Hatch]; at least two children. She was born 6 Jun 1844. Doc died 15 Aug 1912 Carroll Co TN, age 75.

ELIZABETH E WALL (b 1809) and JAMES WADE BURTON (b 1804) and their descendantsfrom page 4a-6

Elizabeth's parents were Thomas Meredith Wall and Elizabeth Hardaway ShortJames' parents are not known to us

Note: much of the information on this and the following page is from Mary Thomas Burton,27 and from Mecklenburg and Carroll Co census records.28

i. Elizabeth E4 "Betsey" Wall, born 13 Dec 1809 Mecklenburg Co VA, married James Wade Burton; at least eight children, all but the youngest born in VA.

James was described as short in stature, with a "good education, and well versed in the Bible". Born 28 Jun 1804 near Joyce, Mecklenburg Co, he died 24 Dec 1864 Carroll Co TN, age 60. She died 5 Jan 1872 Carroll Co, age 62. They were buried Mt Comfort Cemetery, Carroll Co (now in Natchez Trace State Park).

Betsey and James were members of the Church of Christ. They moved their family to Carroll Co TN in 1844-45, along with her mother and some of her siblings. More information is available on the Burton family.

It is said that Betsey often told stories about her childhood home on the Roanoke River. She smoked a pipe, which her grandchildren kept lit for her when she was old.

JAMES’ DEATH -- In material shared with us by our cousin Robert Lee "Bob" Wall is an interesting story about how James died.29 He was shot in the back on his way from the barnyard to the house on Christmas Eve. His son John recognized the murderers. James' sons Jim and George, on leave from the Union army, carried him inside.

Later, the Burtons' crops were burned, and Betsey had a rope tied around her neck for hours while the marauders tried to get her to give them information which they thought she had. We assume all this meanness happened because the family were known as Union sympathizers. (When Jim and George came home after the war, they had to go elsewhere for perhaps several years, because of high anti-Union feeling.)

a) Elizabeth J5 Burton, born 22 Dec 1829, married William H Parish 9 Jan 1854; at least eight children. Born Mar 1830, he died 19 Jan 1894, age 63. She died 6 May 1913 in TN, age 83.

b) Rebecca5 Burton, born 10 Sep 1831, married Duncan "Dunk" Roberts; at least seven children: James William, John Dill, George, Dona, "Sister", Mary, and Tom.

Rebecca died 20 May 1907 Carroll Co TN, age 75. Born 5 May 1833, Dunk died 27 Dec 1922, age 89. They were buried Hare Cemetery, Alberton, Henderson Co TN.

c) Nancy5 Burton was born about 1833.

d) Thomas Henry5 Burton, born 17 Sep 1834, married Margaret Jane Wilson Dec 1861; two children: James William and Leonidas ("Onnie"). Born 28 Sep 1837, Margaret Jane died 24 Jul 1865, age 27, and was buried Wilson Family Cemetery, Henderson Co TN.

Thomas Henry married Virginia Douglas 15 Feb 1872; ten children: John, Molly, Henry Cornelius, "Missie", Joseph Archie, Allen Granville, Martha Jane ("Mattie"), Thomas Harmon, Grace May, and Robert Lundy.

Thomas Henry died 19 Sep 1921 in TN, age 87. Born 15 Feb 1845, Virginia died 3 Aug 1931, age 86. They were buried Rock Springs Cemetery, Henderson Co TN.

e) John Herbert5 Burton, born about 1835, married Victoria Jamison; six children: Ada (b 1863), James Wade (b 1867), Sam (1868-1869), Tabby (b 1874), Willie, and Martha (b 1877).

Secondly, John married Georgia Bennett Roach; one daughter, Mary. He died Oct 1924 in TN, age about 89, and was buried Walnut Grove Cemetery, Obion Co TN.

f) James Allen5 "Jim" Burton, born about 1839, was a Private in Co D, 7th TN Cavalry, Union Army, 5 Aug 1862--25 Oct 1863 and 8 Mar 1865--9 Aug 1865.

He married Cordelia Pritchard; two daughters, Frances Ione and Mary Etta. Born about 1854, Cordelia died about 1884, age about 30. He died about 1929 in TN, age about 90,

and was buried Blair Cemetery, near Clarksburg, Carroll Co TN.

g) George Wade5 Burton, born 7 Oct 1843, was in the Union Army. He married Emily "Emma Jane" Bellew, 31 Dec 1865 Carroll Co TN; nine children: James Thomas

(b 1867), Leola Elizabeth "Betty" (b c1868 in TN, d c1957), Laburn, Janie, Donna, George, Otto, Walter (he died during the nine-week period between the deaths of his parents), and Maude.

George and Emma Jane moved to Fulton, Fulton Co KY, and he was the first cotton gin operator there. He was also a livestock dealer and had a livery stable, and she did much of the work in running the businesses.

He died 16 Mar 1900 Fulton, age 56. Born 18 Nov 1844, she died 23 May 1900, age 55. They were buried Fairview Cemetery, Fulton.

An item in the 1870 census offers an interesting line of thought. Until now, we have assumed that the two main branches of the Wall family (in Carroll and DeKalb counties) had little or no contact after TMTW moved his family east to DeKalb Co, especially after the Civil War.

Now we are beginning to wonder if this is entirely true. The 1870 census shows a worker on George's farm named "Dow Wall," of an appropriate age to be TMTW's son Lorenzo Dow Wall, page 4a-34.

h) William Andrew5 Burton, born about 1848 in TN, married Elizabeth Jowers; at least six children: James Clement, John Thomas, Martha, Benjamin Franklin, William Bell, and George Washington.

Born about 1852, Elizabeth died about 1917, age about 65. William Andrew died 3 Jul 1919, age about 67. They were buried Jowers Cemetery, Henderson Co TN.

JOHN H WALL (b 1811) and TABITHA THOMAS (b 1811) and their descendantsfrom page 4a-6

John's parents were Thomas Meredith Wall and Elizabeth Hardaway ShortTabitha's parents were probably Michael Thomasson and Judith Merryman

Note: much of the information on this and the following page is from William Taylor Wall,30 Robert H Allen,2 and cemetery records.32

j. John H4 Wall, born 10 Mar 1811 Mecklenburg Co VA, married Tabitha Thomas 16 Dec 1834 Warren Co NC; at least eight children. Born 28 Feb 1811, she died 2 Jul 1883, age 72. He died 21 Jun 1901 Carroll Co TN, age 90. They were buried Wall Cemetery, near Roan Creek Church, Huntingdon, Carroll Co.

Tabitha is said to be the daughter of Michael Thomasson and Judith Merryman of Mecklenburg Co VA. However, she and her brother Richard Thomas, page 4a-6, along with others, were apparently heirs of Bennett Thomas of Mecklenburg Co.33

John and Tabitha moved their family, along with his mother and some of his siblings, to Carroll Co TN in 1844-45. See page 4a-18 for more on this move.

JOHN’S MILITARY SERVICE -- Earlier we thought that John was in the Union Army during the Civil War, but have just recently found his service record, which indicates he was in the Mexican War.35

He enlisted in Nashville 2 Jun 1846 as a private in Co B, 1st Infantry. This was the period in which so many Tennessee men voluntarily enlisted that the state received its nickname "The Volunteer State."

John was discharged at "Lomita" 7 Aug 1846 on a surgical certificate. We don't know whether Lomita was a town or a fort, and would like to find its location, which we think must be in Mexico or near the border. The only present day Lomita we have found is in California, but virtually no US troops were there in 1846.

After the war, John returned to District 13, Carroll Co, where in 1848 he paid $400 tax on 138 acres, and in 1849 paid $500 tax on 205 acres.

a) Martha5 Wall, born 1835 in VA, may have married John D Brandon.

b) Margaret5 Wall, born 1838 in VA, married James S Barger 28 Aug 1855; daughter Martha E. His name may have originally been Fronabarger.

c) William H5 Wall, born 6 Aug 1840 in VA,34 married Alice E Hare and married Martha Alice Scott -- see page 4a-21.

Both William and his brother John, page 4a-23, were in the Union Army during the Civil War. We have recently located their service records,35 which are identical.

They each enlisted Paducah KY 29 Dec 1863 as privates in Co G, 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry, and were mustered out in Nashville TN 1 Feb 1865.

d) John "Johnie" Oliver5 Wall, born 1842 in VA, married Martha Isabelle Grogan -- see page 4a-23.

e) Rebecca Ann5 Wall, born about 1845 Carroll Co TN, married N James Tilson; four children: son Joe T (1872-1961, married Mary A Brandon); son Tee; daughter Dua; and daughter Medie.

f) Henry Clay5 Wall, born 18 Oct 1847 Carroll Co TN, married Delithia Ann Flake -- see page 4a-24.

g) Thomas Greene5 Wall, born 4 Jan 1849 Carroll Co TN, married Frances W Olive, Martha Carrington, Nancy Triona Carrington, and Martha W Hood -- see page 4a-25.

NOTE: for brevity in this document, we refer to Thomas Meredith Thweatt Wall as TMTW.

k. Thomas Meredith Thweatt 4 Wall ,3,29 born 12 Dec 1812 Mecklenburg Co VA, married Elizabeth H (Hunt?) "Betsy" Clack 22 Mar 1837. Like his parents, TMTW and Betsy had eleven children. Her parents were Thomas Clack and Elizabeth Tangles . Born 19 Aug 1818, Betsy died 8 Feb 1863, age 44.

Secondly, TMTW married Melissa Jane Jones [Pike] [Lassiter] 19 Aug 1864 Dekalb Co TN; four children. Her parents were Amasa Jones and Jane Canine. Probably born about 1830, Melissa died late 1873 or early 1874, age about 43, and was buried Jefferson Cemetery, near Keltonburg, DeKalb Co.

TMTW married Rebecca Elexandra 22 Aug 1875 DeKalb Co. He married Nancy E Fletcher [Calwell] 12 Jun 1881. He died 2 Oct 1890 Jefferson, DeKalb Co, age 77, and was buried Jefferson Cemetery.

TMTW was the eleventh child of an eleventh child! He was brought up by his mother, because his father had died when he was less than a year old, page 4a-5. We believe his family lived near other relatives and neighbors, especially his grandmother Hannah [Wall] [Thomas] and step-grandfather Peter Thomas.

BETSY, the first wife of TMTW, was a daughter of Thomas Clack and Elizabeth Tangles, or possibly of Thomas' brother William E Clack and his wife Rebecca James.38 See Section 2 for more on this.

TMTW AND BETSY’S EARLY YEARS TOGETHER - They were married 22 Mar 1837 Warren Co NC, when she was 18 and he was 24. Since the two counties where the couple were born adjoin one another, we think the families may have been friends and that there may have been a certain amount of moving back and forth in the area.

They lived in Mecklenburg Co VA at least long enough for the births of the first two children. The next two were born across the state border in Warren Co NC, where the family is shown in the 1840 census records. These moves between the two counties may not have been very far. We don't know town names of the locations where the four births took place, and we doubt we will find out anything more on where they actually lived or how many moves they made in the general area between census dates.

Two later moves, however, definitely were major ones. Moving a family a great distance at this time must have been a formidable undertaking. We are curious why they did, and would like to know more about the circumstances, mode of travel, etc.

"All-People" -- Section 4a {Table of Contents} Page 4a- 12

MAJOR MOVE WESTWARD -- The first major move was to Carroll Co TN, where the next three children were born. This was far from North Carolina, in the western part of Tennessee. TMTW and his next older brother John H Wall, page 4a-10, moved their families to Carroll Co about 1844-45. They took their mother Elizabeth Hardaway Short Wall with them, and probably one or two of their sisters. The trip was made by wagon pulled by oxen, and reportedly took eight weeks -- what a sight this family wagon train must have been!

We have wondered if the family might have been able to get a land grant based on Thomas Meredith Wall’s war service, but the time interval between his service (1813) and the move is over 30 years. (We know there was something of this sort later on, because we have a copy of a land grant dated 1858.) See page 4a-18 for more on this move and the next one.

MAJOR MOVE EASTWARD -- TMTW's family stayed only about five or six years in Carroll Co. We know the last four children were born in DeKalb Co TN. This means TMTW's family made another major move by 1851, several counties eastward to the central part of the state (Middle Tennessee). Evidently TMTW's mother and his siblings' families remained in Carroll Co.

FAMILY LIFE during all these years would have had its hard times, because of so many children, probably not many resources, and so many moves. Betsy's twenty-six years of married life were probably that of a typical farm and/or small town wife of her times, characterized mostly by hard work. Some things that seem dreadful today may have been normal then.

The family may have moved again after returning to DeKalb Co, because there are two different towns named as birthplaces for two of the last four children. The different towns could, however, simply mean the births were recorded in different places while the family remained on one farm in a rural area. We are remarking on TMTW's moves because moving a family in those times was such a hard thing to do.

A number of land transactions are recorded for TMTW in the deed books of DeKalb Co, including an interesting one from Record Book H (1859-1861), pp 403-404. He is selling "one tract of land in civil district 9; 148½ acres more or less, one jack, one jennet, one steer, one four horse wagon, three sows, twenty pigs, one man saddle, one shotgun, one small chest, one trunk, one lot of books, two pair of andirons, one lot of coaly tanbark, one grindstone, to Jesse T Hollis, his heirs and offsprings." All this is evidently to clear indebtedness "to Wm H Magney by note for $37.00 and to the estate of Elijah Whaley for $98.00 which is in a judgement before W A Dunlop and stayed by one Henry Frazier, said Dunlop in favor of B Marks stayed by David Wanley for about $35.00, Isaac Hayes $103.00, Johnson Trammel...$7.00, John Johnson $600.00, J Beckwith $81.00. Payment of debts due by 1st Monday in January 1862." This doesn't really add very much to the little we know about TMTW as a person, but we thought it was worth including here.

MILITARY SERVICE35 – BFE's mother (Johnnie Epperson Wall Fisher, JWF) said that TMTW and two of his sons were in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, but she didn't know which ones, or what units they were in, until we began seriously researching the family history.

Now we know that TMTW was in 1st (Colm's) Tennessee Infantry Battalion, Company A. He enlisted as a sergeant 10 Dec 1861 at Smithville, for 12 months. He was furloughed home 23 Jan 1862, possibly to take care of the financial situation mentioned above. He did not return to ranks until 24 Oct 1862, although he remained on the rolls as sergeant until 20 Sep 1862. He was a private from 1 Nov 1862 to 23 Feb 1863. He was discharged 26 Mar 1863 at Port Hudson and paid 28 Mar 1863, according to muster rolls dated 21 Jan 1864 Dalton GA, which indicate his enlistment was originally for 3 years. His wife had died 8 Feb1863, which may have been why he was discharged then.

The sequence is interesting. TMTW and his sons were in the Confederate army in turn, rather than overlapping. First was the oldest son, William Henry Freeman Wall, who enrolled 18 May 1861 and died of illness 9 Jul 1861. Then TMTW was involved in the army from 10 Dec 1861 until 26 Mar 1863. TMTW's next oldest son, Nathan Thweatt Wall, enlisted later that year, 24 Dec 1863, and was parolled 16 May 1865 after his unit surrendered.

BETSY’S DEATH -- The events leading up to the Civil War, and the war itself, would not have made things any easier. Her husband TMTW was away the last four months of her life. Having borne so many children, she was probably not in the best condition to withstand illness. We don't know where she was buried.

Of the nine children who survived Betsy, seven were under eighteen when she died. BFE's grandfather John Eldridge Wall was only six years old; his little brother Sterling B Hartwell Wall not yet four.

There are absolutely no family stories about who took care of the children after Betsy's death. Recently, however, we have been pleased to find a small amount about their father's second family, and what happened to some of the children, pages 4a-15--4a-17.

TMTW’S SECOND MARRIAGE (19 Aug 1864 DeKalb Co TN) was to Melissa Jane Jones [Pike] [Lassiter], daughter of Amasa Jones and Jane Canine. TMTW and Melissa moved to the Dry Creek community of DeKalb Co, near Liberty, and had four children before she died late 1873 or early 1874.

Because he had so many children still at home and they had children together, they placed her daughters and at least one of his daughters (by their previous marriages) as servants in other households in the Jefferson area. We suspect some of TMTW's children may have resented his second marriage and felt they had been forced to leave home because of it.

However, we believe this was not necessarily because TMTW married again, but because he lost everything. The 1860 census shows him owning land valued at $1000 and property valued at $2000, and Melissa had definitely owned some land. We know he had purchased additional land after 1863. Yet the 1870 census shows them owning nothing, with only $150 in personal property. It would be interesting to track his land transactions in an effort to learn more.

Although both LDS records and the cemetery listing show Melissa's deathdate as about 1872, we believe this is incorrect unless there is some mistake with the fourth child. She must have died late 1873 or early 1874, probably in childbirth or from a complication of the birth of the youngest child. She left three little children under 7 years old, and an infant who died soon (if he had not already died). We don't know who took care of them after her death.

Please see page 4a-16 for more about Melissa, her parents and siblings, her children from her previous marriages, and what happened during the years of her marriage to TMTW.

TMTW's THIRD MARRIAGE (22 Aug 1875) was to Rebecca Elexandra. We think Elexandra (Alexandra?) may have been her middle name, but we don't know her surname or anything else about her, whether or not she was a widow, with or without children. We assume she and TMTW had no children and that she died within a few years.

TMTW's FOURTH MARRIAGE (12 June 1881) was to Nancy E Fletcher [Calwell], at the home of her father, with G L Young officiating.39 All we know about her is that she was born about 1820. It is possible she was also married previously to (--?--) Hix. Based on her estimated birthdate, she and TMTW had no children. We assume she survived him.

CEMETERY INFORMATION -- TMTW died 2 Oct 1890 DeKalb Co, age 77. During our 1992 Tennessee visit, our cousin John Douglas Wall took us to the Jefferson Cemetery, where he had been told TMTW was buried. This cemetery is located on Pates Ford Dock Road, about 3 miles from State Road 288. This is to the southwest of the intersection of Pine Creek and the Caney Fork River, north of Keltonburg and Sink Creek.

Although we found tombstones of several Thweatts and at least two Walls, we could not find any with the information we were looking for. Nevertheless, we feel this is where TMTW is buried, possibly now covered by a corner of the present building. A book we found in the Putnam Co library, a 1989 publication entitled "DeKalb County Cemeteries" by Davis Garrison Gilbert, supports this idea. It is true we aren't sure where the authors obtained their information (and the dates shown for Melissa don't appear to us to be correct), but it surely has to have some basis. Anyway, we like the following statement, which appears at the end of the listings for Jefferson Cemetery:

"Known to be buried in unmarked graves:Mallissa Jane Jones Pike Lassiter Wall ca 1830-1872

(Malissa was a daughter of Amasa Jones)Thomas Meredith Thweatt Wall 12-12-1812/10-2-1890"

-- Children of Thomas Meredith Thweatt Wall and Elizabeth H "Betsy" Clack --

Note: much of the information about TMTW's children is from Jane K Wall3 and LDS Family Group Record Archives.5

i. William Henry Freeman5 Wall, born 25 Feb 1838 Mecklenburg Co VA, married Elizabeth Williams about 1859; no children known to us. He died 9 Jul 1861, age 23.

We note that his third given name is a family name, the first name of his great-grandfather Freeman Short and the maiden name of his great-great-grandmother Mary Freeman, Section 1. William was in the Confederate Army, in Co A of 16th Battalion Tennessee Infantry (or possibly Co K, 7th Battalion). He enlisted 18 May 1861 at Camp Harris TN for one year.35 He died of an illness, probably measles, at Camp Trousdale (pronounced trowsdale, not truesdale; named for the state governor), a temporary installation

used by many CSA units for muster and training. We wanted to find the site, and in 2003 visited our cousin Wilkes McNairy "Bill" Sirls in Gallatin, Sumner Co TN. He drove us around the area where he thought the camp may have been, near the KY border, about 45 miles north of Nashville. Two local amateur historians went with us, and we also talked with the Tennessee State Historian.

There are actually two probable sites, both about three miles south of the intersection of highways 109 and 31W, between Mitchellville and Portland TN. We believe the camp was first established near the present location of the Tennessee Gas Co Pumping Station, but was moved because it was very swampy and unhealthy. We believe the second camp was eastward, closer to the railroad. Two highway markers, on the east side of TN 109 at its intersection with Main Street, indicate that Richland Station was about 100 yards east. The town's name was later changed to Portland.

In Richland Park, in Portland, is a log building called the Cold Spring Museum. It was originally a schoolhouse on the nearby land which later became Camp Trousdale, and was used during the war as a hospital. Later it was used for other purposes, was abandoned in 1933, and in recent times moved to the park. That building may have been where William Henry Freeman Wall died.

ii. Mary Ann Jane5 Wall was born 21 Aug 1839 Mecklenburg Co VA. She died 10 Jan 1840, age 4½ mos.

iii. Rebecca Elizabeth5 Wall was born 9 Nov 1840 Warren Co NC. It is said that she married Joseph F Jackson 24 Sep 1862 DeKalb Co TN, and that she died about 1868, age about 27.

BFE's mother (JWF) told about her "Aunt Bet," who married a Yankee and whose name "was never again spoken in the family". It is said that Joseph was a Captain in the Union Army and the couple made their home in Pennsylvania. We would like to know more about how they met, fell in love and decided to marry, and what happened to them later. We have so far been unsuccessful in trying to find out more about Joseph. Was he stationed in DeKalb Co in 1862? It has been said that Bet died in DeKalb Co, so we don't know if there is any truth in the story that they moved to PA.

iv. Nathan Thweatt5 Wall, born 27 Aug 1843 Warren Co NC, married Mary Louisa Belk -- see page 4a-27.

v. Thomas Meritt5 Wall, born 21 Sep 1845 Carroll Co TN, married Lucy Jane Griffith; no children known to us. He died about 1869, age about 24.

We don't know why he died at such a young age, or anything else about him or Lucy Jane. Also, we were curious about the origin of his middle name. Earlier we thought it could possibly have been Meredith rather than Meritt, because none of his siblings was named Meredith after their father. Recently, however, we found the name Meritt in the family, Section 1.

vi. Marina Peterson5 Wall, born 27 Oct 1847 Carroll Co TN, married Osiath (Osias?) Griffith; at least two children. He was born about 1844. In 1880 they were in Dekalb Co TN,96 with son Joseph P (Perry?), age 7, and daughter Leona, age 2. We don’t know anything else about them.

BFE's mother (JWF) said Marina was called "Aunt Puss." We would like to know the origin of her middle name. It's probably the name of someone the parents admired at the time; this could be said to be a custom in the family.

We don't know whether Osiath was a brother of Lucy Jane Griffith, who married Marina's brother Thomas.

2. RUE ANNA LASSITER was born 3 Oct 1856. After her mother married TMTW, she was sent to live with other families near Jefferson, with Jones relatives living nearby. In 1870 she was with William and Bettie Anderson in Jefferson. In 1876, Rue married Stokely B Adcock; six children.93 His parents were Thomas Adcock (who had served in Colm’s unit) and Frances Bowles. Rue died 10 May 1917, age 62

3. MARY E LASSITER was born Jun 1860. After her mother married TMTW, she was also sent to live with other families. In 1870, she was a servant of Benjamin and Elizabeth Wilkerson, with no relatives in the immediate vicinity. In the 1880 census she was a servant of Munro and Martha Green.

Later in 1880 Mary married one of Munro's relatives, Tennessee W Green; five children, including Alvin, Harvey and Minnie. Tennessee was an uncle of C Monroe Ferrell, who married Mary’s half-sister Martha Elmiry Wall, page 4a-15. Tennessee died before 1900.

Melissa married TMTW 19 Aug 1864 DeKalb Co; four children, page 4a-15. She died late 1873 or early 1874, age about 42 or 43, and was buried Jefferson Cemetery, DeKalb Co TN.

Melissa's life seems to have been filled with one tragedy after another. In 1854, when she was about 23 and had been married less than three years, her first husband died, leaving her with a baby daughter. Then about 1860, her second husband died after they had been married only about five years, leaving her with two more little daughters.

She had inherited a little money and some land in Ohio which had belonged to her grandparents. But a young widow with three little girls in rural DeKalb Co had no way of caring for herself very long. Then came Civil War.

After she married widower TMTW (who had at least six children still at home), they apparently lost everything. They had four more children, before she died in 1873 or 1874 when she was only 42 or 43 years old.

Her oldest daughter, Mercy J Pike, moved to the home of her aunt, Mary Jones Adcock, where in the 1870 census she was listed as a servant. By the late 1860s Mercy's father and grandparents were already dead, and her mother had married TMTW and had new babies to care for plus some of his younger children from his first wife. So when Mary Jones Adcock died, her niece, about 20 years old and already in the household, married Henry Adcock Jr.

He died about 1882, after he and Mercy had been married about eight years, leaving her with three children. Here again was a young widow with small children to care for.

She married widower Preston Franklin Cantrell, and they had two children before she died.

After Melissa married TMTW, her second daughter, Rue Anna Lassiter, was also farmed out to other families. In the 1870 census, when she was about 14, she was listed as a servant. She evidently lost contact with her mother, who died only a few years later, and Rue Anna evidently knew little about her family history.

Melissa's third daughter, Mary E Lassiter, was also sent away when she was very young, and apparently completely lost contact with her mother's family. At age 10 in 1870, and again in 1880, she was listed as a servant.

Meantime, TMTW's daughter Roanne Williamson Thweatt Wall, page 4a-31, was also sent away. In the 1870 census she was a servant for Rachel Beckwith, age 65. We don't know if Roanne's siblings were sent away.

There were no stories about the marriage of TMTW and Melissa, or their children, in either Sarah Jones Risdahl's family or BFE's. Clearly, there was more than we know. Sarah says she has the feeling that the families of John B Jones and William V Jones survived the war years better, though both men served in same battalion as TMTW. Their family units stayed intact until all the children were grown and they stayed nearby for many years.

In William's case, the grown sons stayed to help their mother and youngest siblings survive after their father's death so that she did not have to remarry like Melissa and Mercy did with very young children to support.

Jokes are often made about family intermarriage in the south. In small rural communities long ago, there were big families and not many opportunities to travel distances to find spouses. So marriages between third and later cousins did happen. In her research, Sarah has found marriages of first cousins to be rare and of second cousins somewhat more frequent. The case of Henry Adcock and Mercy Pike is different, however, since they were not blood relatives.

We see the lives of Melissa and her children as rather tragic. Her descendants have not been easily traced; most of them apparently had little sense of family. Death and war and poverty and lack of education, and simply being female, burdened the women tremendously.

-- OUR WALL FAMILY'S MOVES 1844-1853 --

WHY THE FAMILY LEFT MECKLENBURG CO -- There had to be reasons they went west in 1844-45, but we don't know exactly what they were. We understand that many farmers left North Carolina and Virginia for fresh land in Tennessee because their land had become worn out (probably to make the same mistakes in their new location). We think this lack of knowledge of soil conservation techniques was common in many parts of the country; it is a great shame that our pioneers were not aware of some of the things we know now.

Whatever their reasons were for going west, we think one of their main objectives, as with most families, was to live near relatives. Carroll Co had been formed in 1821 in the Tennessee Western District (previously Indian lands). Land was available at very low cost in the 1830s and 1840s, through resale of Revolutionary War land warrants, so there was a great deal of migration to the new area.

TMTW's sister Rebecca Ann D Wall and her second husband Andrew W Simpson had already settled there, and described the area in glowing terms. Relatives such as Rebecca Singleton and her husband Richard Thomas, page 4a-6, had moved there at least ten years before TMTW, and also encouraged kinfolk to come. We think the choice of Carroll Co for the family's destination may have been largely the result of much urging on their part.

WHY TMTW LEFT CARROLL CO -- We think a political or philosophical split within the family may have caused TMTW's move eastward to DeKalb Co while the rest of the family stayed in Carroll Co. This possibility seems reinforced by our recent discoveries that two of John H Wall's sons (William H Wall and John O Wall), and two of Elizabeth E Wall's sons (James Allen Burton and George H Burton) were in the Union Army, while TMTW and two of his sons (William Henry Freeman Wall and Nathan Thweatt Wall) were in the Confederate Army.

If it is true that there was some rift between the siblings, this could be the reason that none of my family seemed to know of the existence of Wall relatives in Carroll Co. BFE feels her mother, her parents, and others in the family would have refused to acknowledge, or perhaps would even have blocked their memory of, any relatives who took the Yankee side.

There are, however, other good reasons why TMTW and Betsy might have decided not to stay. They may have wanted to settle permanently in an area where there were more people they had known and liked previously. Numerous families from the Mecklenburg Co VA area had migrated west in the same general time period, and they would have known and/or been related to many of them. Various family groups had no doubt stopped in places along the migration routes, some settling in DeKalb County TN and not going farther west. We know there were Thweatts in DeKalb at the time, and we feel there must surely have been some connection with them.

Also, TMTW could simply have felt the land in DeKalb Co was somewhat more like Mecklenburg Co, perhaps offering better prospects for farming. We have recently found out that at least some of the families were disappointed when they arrived in Carroll Co, that the land there was not as fertile and attractive as they had been led to believe.

SOME LASTING EFFECTS OF THE CIVIL WAR -- The war, and especially its aftermath, was talked about frequently by several generations of the family, over a very long time. Though the actual battles were finished over 65 years before BFE was even born, she "grew up on" Civil War stories. They definitely had an effect on the lives of her parents' and many generations. Even today, some people remain "unreconstructed." (Her mother was still very proud of this when she died in 1985, age 88.)

Many people nowadays don't seem to realize how important and influential this has been. They find it hard to understand the reasons why anyone would have wanted to be on the Confederate side at all. I suspect they think the whole thing was about slavery, and they find it hard to accept that their ancestors would want to keep slavery so much they would go to such extremes for it.

In BFE's opinion, slavery was only one reason for the war; she believes most ordinary people would not have been seriously willing to risk their lives if the main reason was so that some people could own some other people. (She remembers a university professor saying that the slave-based economic system probably wouldn't have lasted a lot longer anyway, because it was becoming much less profitable and simply couldn't continue.)

Again in her opinion, the greater reason for the war really was "states' rights". Southerners as a whole were pretty independent folks, didn't want to be told what to do by the North or anyone else, even if the most obvious issue did involve enslaving others. Actually, I can't help feeling that most of the ordinary soldiers simply joined the side their friends and community were on. There were places, of course, where opinion really was divided and her theory doesn't work.

It's hard even to imagine what it would have been like to have family members on both sides. TMTW's mother Elizabeth Hardaway Short certainly experienced this personal tragedy, within the greater catastrophe of the war itself.

f) Thomas Green5 Wall, born 4 Jan 1849 Carroll Co TN, married Frances F Olive, probably about 1871; possibly one child born Carroll Co. She was born about 1855. Her parents were Howell Olive and probably Ann Lyon. Frances probably died before the end of 1873, age 17 or 18.

Please note, we aren’t certain that Frances was mother of John Howell Wall, oldest child of Thomas Green Wall. We’re inclined to think so, partly due to John’s middle name being the first name of Frances’ father.

Our problem is with the dates found in so many of the references. She is said to have died 11 Nov 1872, while John is said to have been born 21 Nov 1873. We think that this may be a classic case of inaccurate data being passed along by one writer to another, without stopping to consider possibilities. Perhaps John’s birth, and Frances’ death, both took place during November of 1873. In the 1880 census he was shown as age six.

Thomas married Martha Carrington 12 May 1875; one child born Carroll Co. She died 11 Jul 1880. He married her twin sister, Nancy Triona Carrington, 10 Oct 1880; five children born Carroll Co. She died 22 Apr 1891. He married Martha W Hood 11 Jan 1892; two children born Carroll Co.

He died 8 Apr 1930, age 81. Born about 1862, Martha died 1951, age about 89. Thomas and his four wives were buried Wall Cemetery, near Roan's Creek Church, Huntingdon, Carroll Co.

(c) Johnie Lee7 Wall married Earl Perry about 1927. Secondly, she married Raymond Adams. He died 18 Sep 1986.

ii) Frances E6 "Fannie" Wall was born about 1877 (age 3 in 1880 census). She married William Manley Pendergrass about 1889; two children. Born 29 Jan 1873, he died 1959, age about 86. She died 1962 Henderson Co TN, age about 85.

(a) Homer Vigil7 Pendergrass was born 6 Aug 1898. He was considered a very promising young man but, sadly, died of tuberculosis at age 22.

iv. Nathan Thweatt5 Wall2,5 was born 27 Aug 1843 Warren Co NC. He enlisted 24 Dec 1863 in DeKalb Co TN as a Private, Company G, Second Georgia Cavalry CSA, and was stationed near Dalton GA. His unit surrendered 10 May 1865 and he was parolled 16 May 1865 Albany GA.

He became a farmer and store keeper. He married Mary Louisa Belk 11 Jan 1866; seven children. We think she was called Belk; she is listed in census that way. Born 12 Jan 1848 Marion Co GA, she died 4 Oct 1914, age 66, and was buried City Cemetery, Smithville, DeKalb Co TN.

He married Mary Melissa Loring [Williams]; one child. He died 1 Dec 1923 Smithville, age 80, and was buried City Cemetery, Smithville. She later married (--?--) Neeley. She died about 1940 and was buried Bethal Cemetery, Smithville.

When BFE's mother told family stories, she often mentioned Uncle Nathan. Sometime after the birth of their first child, Nathan and Mary Louisa moved to DeKalb Co TN. He had a store which had a post office. He called it the Belk Post Office, after his wife and her family, so the community became known as Belk, and is still on maps. We suspect the post office may be gone, but in 1992 the store was still there.

Mary Melissa and her first husband, Marion L Williams, were married 23 Aug 1895. They had eight children, all born in Texas: daughters Willie P, Nola A, Johnnie M, Sarah L, and Mellie W; and sons Calvin L, Eugene Jackson, and Houston G.

-- Children of Nathan Thweatt Wall and Mary Louisa Belk --

a) Sterling (T?)6 Wall, born 1868 in GA, married Caldonia "Callie" Adcock 29 Sep 1891 DeKalb Co TN; four children. Her parents were Perry Adcock and Mary N Winn, page 30. Born 11 Jan 1867 DeKalb Co, Callie died 15 Aug 1948 Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co TN, age 81, and probably was buried Ward's Grove Cemetery, near Murfreesboro.

-- See page 4a-29 for some information about the ADCOCK family --

BFE's mother knew Uncle Nathan's son Sterling, whom her family called Cousin Sterling. We assume he was named for his father's brother Sterling B Hartwell Wall. We don't know whether Uncle Nathan and the others knew that, in 1720, our ancestor Mary Sterling married our ancestor James Clack Jr, Section 2.

Cousin Sterling's home was east of Murfreesboro on a 2000 acre farm, said to be worth over $100,000 in the 1920s.92 Cousin Donald Pickard Wall, who helped us with much of the information, said he was visiting there when Cousin Sterling bought a Cadillac touring car in Nashville, and he (Donald) never forgot his thrill for them. He also remembered that Cousin Sterling used to get spiritually happy in old fashioned revival meetings, and "shouted all over the church". Donald said Sterling and Callie's two sons, Herschel and Jack, were very handsome men.

i) Hershal7 Wall married Myrtle Dye; three children.

BFE's mother also knew Uncle Nathan's daughter Dolly. She must have been an interesting person, single, with a rather unusual career. She had a small apartment in Murfreesboro, but traveled throughout the area delivering and taking orders for custom made shirts. (The shirts themselves were made in a factory.)

Cousin Donald Pickard Wall said Dolly would always spend the night with his family when she was in Cookeville, and he remembers that she would rest on their couch whenever she could. He also said she liked to keep herself youthful in appearance. Sadly, she died alone, and was found dead in her apartment.

Nathan Jr married Roberta Frances Stacey 24 Dec 1941; two children. Born 24 Jul 1921, she died 8 Nov 1970, age 49. He married his second wife 25 Jun 1973.

He died 30 Jan 2006, age 86, Goodlettsville, Davidson Co TN.

Evidently the family lost contact with Nathan Jr and his mother. A few years ago, however, we were very pleased to correspond via e-mail with the son of Nathan Jr,92 who provided most of the information about his parents' family. In 1994, he said that his father was living with him in Nashville, and in 2000 that his father was alive and well. As late as 13 May 2004 he was involved in real estate transactions.

We found the date of Nathan Jr’s death, and last residence, in the SSDI.Nathan Jr’s son also said, in 2000, that his father remembered going to the funeral of his father

(Uncle Nathan), in 1923 with his half-brother Sterling in a “big black car”.

vii. Roanne Williamson Thweatt5 "Ro" Wall65 was born 1 Aug 1849 Huntington, Carroll Co TN. In 1870 at age 21, she was a domestic servant in the household of Rachel Beckwith.

Ro married William Giles Thweatt III 13 May 1875 Alexandria, DeKalb Co TN; six children born Smithville, DeKalb Co. His parents were William Giles Thweatt II and Sophia Matilda McKee.

Born 26 Feb 1838 Alexandria, William III died 27 May 1902, age 64, and was buried Bright Light Cemetery, Free Will Baptist Church, a mile south of Harvey, Brazos Co TX.

Ro died 8 Apr 1926 Lovell, Big Horn Co WY, age 76, and was buried there.

-- See page 4a-32 for some information about the THWEATT family --

Ro and William moved to Texas sometime after their last child was born (1888). She became a Mormon about 1899, and changed her married name to Threet (same pronunciation as Thweatt, different spelling) about that time. On a trip in 1996 we (KFE and BFE) visited Bright Light Cemetery and found William's grave and that of their oldest son, William Thomas Freeman Threet. It seemed rather sad, somehow lonely, and perhaps even a little neglected, but this impression may have been because the area was very dry.

After their deaths, Ro and the four surviving sons moved to Lovell WY as homesteaders and eventually prospered. They were living in Lovell at the time of the 1910 census.

BFE's uncle Wilkes Hammock Wall, Section 4b, visited them on their ranch there when he was a young man, and told the story of having to enter and leave the house via a second story window, because of the deep snow. Our cousin Wilkes McNairy "Bill" Sirls has recounted some stories about the quaint ways of Ro's son Ollie Burton Threet.

Ro's third given name is the same as the last name of her husband. Probably she was named for an earlier generation of our family. We think it very likely there was a Thweatt connection several generations back in our line, but so far have been unable to find such. We have also wondered if there could have beena mixup in the records, and maybe she didn't have a third given name at all, especially since she had an older brother whose middle name was Thweatt.

a) Anna Lavada6 Thweatt was born 13 Mar 1876. She died 14 Apr 1878, age 2.

b) William Thomas Freeman6 Threet, born 21 Aug 1878, married Ida Dawson. He died 23 Sep 1903 Brazos Co TX, age 25,66 and was buried in the Bright Light Cemetery near his father.

LORENZO DOW WALL (b 1851) and SAMANTHA E ANDERSON (b 1864)and their descendants

from page 4a-14Lorenzo Dow's parents were Thomas Meredith Thweatt Wall and Elizabeth H Clack

Samantha's parents are not known to us

viii) Lorenzo Dow5 Wall,3,5 usually known as Dow, was born 31 Jul 1851 Smithville, DeKalb Co TN. He married Samantha E "Mattie" Anderson 2 Oct 1879 DeKalb Co; six children. Sometime between 1891 and 1894 they moved to northeast Texas near Bonham, Fannin Co, where he was a farmer.5

He died 21 Jan 1918 Bonham, age 66.5,70 Born about 1864, Mattie married at about age 15, and died about 1924, age about 60. We note that their oldest child was 27 years old when the youngest was born.

POSSIBLE TIME IN CARROLL COUNTY -- We recently discovered, in the 1870 census of Carroll Co TN, that a man named "Dow Wall" was working on the farm of George Burton, page 4a-9. We think this may have been TMTW’s son Lorenzo Dow Wall, perhaps helping out while visiting his uncle and other Carroll Co relatives. If so, he returned to DeKalb Co before his 1879 marriage.

We were surprized to find this census entry, as we had thought the Carroll Co and DeKalb Co branches of the family had lost contact after TMTW moved his family east. It is, of course, possible that Dow went out to the Burton farm because of some family disagreement.

DOW’S NAME -- We were curious about who Dow was named for, and found out that Lorenzo Dow was a charismatic Methodist preacher and author who was famous throughout the south in those days. He may have been involved in founding the Bright Light movement (perhaps another subject for further research). In exploring various resources, we've found many other men, born in the same general time period, also named for Lorenzo Dow. This is all rather intriguing, so we looked a little bit further.

The New Century Cyclopedia of Names, Appleton-Century-Crofts, NY 1954, states that Lorenzo Dow was born Coventry CT 16 Oct 1777 and died Washington DC 2 Feb 1834, age 53. He was an "American itinerant preacher, of the Methodist belief. He made two missionary tours in England and Ireland, one in 1799 and one in 1805. He was noted for his eccentricities of manner and dress. His Journal and Miscellaneous Writings was edited by John Dowling in 1836."

Other references include intriguing stories about him, such as the famous one about his laying a curse upon Jacksonboro, Screven Co GA, because its citizens wouldn't listen to his preaching and only one family even offered him shelter. The town suffered a decline, and the only structure which remained standing was the house of the family that took him in.

STERLING B HARTWELL WALL (b 1859) and OLIVIA JANE KUYKENDALL and their descendants

from page 4a-15Sterling's parents were Thomas Meredith Thweatt Wall and Elizabeth H "Betsy" Clack

Olivia's parents are not known to us

xi. Sterling B Hartwell5 Wall,5 born 8 Mar 1859 DeKalb Co TN, married Olivia Jane "Livvie" Kuykendall about 1897. He died 23 Jan 1923, age 63, and was buried Judd Cemetery, near Cookeville, Putnam Co TN.

Sterling was the eleventh child of an eleventh child of an eleventh child! He was the younger brother of BFE's grandfather John Eldridge Wall, Section 4b, and was not quite

four years old when their mother died.

Based on a cemetery listing (which unfortunately shows an incorrect death date), we believe Sterling is buried Judd Cemetery, Putnam Co near Cookeville, on the Holladay road one-half mile southwest of the Buffalo Valley road.

We know almost nothing about Aunt Livvie, except that she was still living Dec 1957.77

THE NAME "STERLING" -- In going over the genealogy charts a few years ago, BFE learned that Sterling's first name is the first name of her great-great-great-great grandfather Sterling Clack, and the maiden name of his mother Mary Sterling [Clack]. This was a rather exciting discovery for us, because we (KFE and BFE) named our second son Jan Sterling Edler.

BFE had always liked the name Sterling and knew that it was used in her family, but did not know it was a really old name handed down through the generations. She feels sure her mother most likely did not know about this either; it is the sort of thing she would have told her.

Of course, we don't know that Uncle Sterling's name came from his ancestors. In fact, we suspect he was named according to what seems to have been a custom in the family -- namely, for a person who was famous at the time and/or whom the parents admired.

Therefore, we've been looking in various references for a man named Sterling B Hartwell who was well-known in the appropriate time period, but all we've found is Hartwell as a family name from several places in England. We're thinking now the person may have been a neighbor or friend, who most likely wouldn't be written about. We don't know how to contact any of the children of Uncle Sterling's daughter Charlie, who might know for certain who he was named for.

"HARTWELL" -- In a few family histories, we have seen Hartfal or something similar instead of Hartwell, but we have never found any such surname. Sterling was listed as "Hartwell, age 11" in the 1870 census.

In the only signed documents we found, he used Sterling H Wall or S H Wall.

a) Charlie Grace6 Wall, born about 1899, married Cullom Hutson.

BFE remembers Charlie and her children, and visiting in their home. BFE's mother was especially fond of Charlie, whom BFE remembers as a lovely person, dark haired and somewhat favoring BFE's mother. Their house was white and she has a vague recollection that it was in a company town where her husband Cullom had worked. She thinks he died when the youngest child wasn't very old.

Once when BFE was little, she and her mother were in Charlie's car, a very small one-seater, possibly a pickup truck. Charlie was driving, Mother held Cullom, Julia knelt, facing backwards, between them, and Jane and BFE stood in front of Mother, with our hands on the dash. Even though that wouldn't be allowed today, it was a way to fit us all in.

In later years BFE's mother had some letters from Charlie, who had moved to Roswell NM which was much better for her health. BFE thinks, altho not sure, at least one of her children went with her.

We wonder if she may have died from a disease such as diphtheria, which often took more than one child in a family. Her younger brother Sterling had died two weeks earlier. This must have been a dreadful time for their parents, especially their mother, whose fifth child was born one month after Johnie died.

Notice the death dates of the first two children below, and the birthdate of the third child. We know that tragedies such as this, probably due to diptheria or another contagious disease, were not uncommon in those days. But it is difficult even to imagine how the parents, especially Annie, endured this time. We notice also that Annie had another child a year and a half later, and then died a year and a half after that, possibly in connection with another childbirth.

NOTE CHANGE IN SPELLING FROM WALL TO WALLS, beginning with Roy Verce Wall's children. We believe there must have been some family disagreement in order for this change to take place but, if so, we don't know what it was. BFE never heard any family stories about changing the spelling; in fact, she didn't even know anyone in the family spelled the name that way, until we discovered the information during our research. Her mother consistently stressed that her family "always" used the Wall spelling.

We are impressed at the number of children in this family. Nannie Louraina was 14½ years old when she married, and 15½ when her first child was born. He was 24 years old when she was 39½ and her fifteenth child was born.
