PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE After what seemed to be a never ending winter and a cold, damp April, it appears that good (i.e. warm, sunny) weather is here to stay. So it's time to make sure your Porsche is ready for summer driving, and to assist you with getting it ready we have scheduled our next tech session at Rosemont Porsche-Audi on May 19th. If your car needs a little work, bring it down to Rosemont and get expert assistance from your fellow members. In addition, one of Rosemont's expert technicians will be present to assist us and the parts department will be open as well. Also, we will be tech inspecting cars for upcoming driving events such as the Northern New Jersey Region Driver's School at Pocono, so plan to attend. For those of you who didn't come, the April meeting brought out many faces, some old, some new, some bright but none blue. Although I would like to think everyone came to see the executive committee in action, the truth of the matter is that everyone came to see Bob Holbert talk and reminisce about his many years in the fast lane, racing and winning in Porsches and other lesser known cars. (Remember, real Carrera's have 9 cams.) Bob brought with him not just a film but an absolutely delightful vignette, showing the Duryea Hill Climb in the mid 1950's. He patiently fielded many questions after the film which ranged from technical to personal, but i don't seem to recall his answer to one which someone asked as to who he felt was the better driver, Ai or himself. Maybe we'll never know, or perhaps we'll have to invite A! for his views. In any event it was a delightful evening and on behalf of our membership I thank Bob for coming and hope that we see more of him in the future. The annual wine tasting and dinner is coming up on May 30th, in place of our normal meeting. This event has grown in popularity over the years and this year's promises to be even better, i look forward to seeing you there. In the meantime, in the words of an old philosopher, "Keep it between the trees." Bid RIESENTOTER REGION PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA

LATE BRAKING NEWS

By BobRIesentoter Region's AutocrossSchool was a rousing success. Those of you who did not come outwere the losers. However, there isalways next year. Over twentyhearty students braved the windand cold to be guided through thelearning stations by iheinstructors. As usual, severalmembers came out only to work, some to learn and work and someto just watch. To all ourinstructors, workers andparticipants, a hearty inanks.Hopefully those students willcontinue to autocross. Ot r firstevent (a Delaware Valley SprintAssociation event) will tak i placeat the large lot at Montgo aery Mallon May 20th. Our second eventoriginally scheduled for August 5thhas been moved to August 19th toavoid a conflict with a

Bridyehampton PATTS event, thelatter having been moved from July14th and 15th to avoid a conflictwith the parade.

Speaking of PATTS, registration isgoing slower than we had hopedfor and we have made a couple keychanges which should do much toencourage participation in theseries. Trophies will be awardedbased on a participant's total pointaccumulation. There is no longer aminimum number of events that onemust attend to be eligible for atrophy. Registration will remainopen throughout the series.

Soon the application for theRiesentoter Region Driver Schoolwill be available. If you areplanning to attend the event (37Riesentoters did last year!), beginpreparing for it early. Talk topeople who attend Drivers' Schoolsso you will know what to expect.Make sure you and your car arecorrectly outfitted with safetyepuipment. Have your car techinspected and don't forget to bringthe tech sheet to the track theday of the event.

There are several areas that youcan practice before you attend aDrivers' School which will allowyou to get the most benefit fromthe school. Remember you are atthe Drivers' School to learn todrive smoothly around a racetrack. This is not the time topractice the basics of operating acar. It never ceases to amaze me, romantic view of driver's schools: the no-name straight

not be afraid to ask. You canpractice this whenever you driveyour car.

Another thing you should do isfamiliarize yourself with theterminology of driving It isdifficult to learn when the

instructor is using words you donot understand. Learn and

practice whatever is practical"beforehand and the school will bemore enjoyable for you and yourinstructor.

Next month — a glossary of racingterminology. See you at the track.

The purpose of this list istwo-fold. First, to provide somebasis of uniformity and mostimportant of all, this list will bemade available to other regions forout-of-reglon events. This willprevent someone from teching theirown cars as well as unqualifiedpeople from performing tech.

Safety is obviously the key here. Iam certain that all of us wouldagree that our Porsche's are veryimportant to us and that we wouldnot want to run an event withunsafe cars or worse still, run atrack event that might include aPorsche which was not 'legal',thereby risking bodily injury oreven worse - damage to our prize•possessions. We understand that some facilitieswill charge you, on a time-basis,to tech your car. Therefore wewill always try to schedule a techsession before major events. Asyou know this is always free ofcharge (technical inspection only).

Tech sessions are invaluable. Theygive you the opportunity to dothings that in the confines of yourown garage would be impossible, ifnot totally inconvenient.

Suspension work, exhaust work, oil changes, valve adjustments, etc. can all be accomplished in aday's work. Lifts are available as

HECKMANS MEMBERSHIPMUTTERINGS WITHAPOLOGIES TO CHRISFIELDS AMONG OTHERS

By John He.c.kman

Something has been gnawing on mysubconscious since i took over thispost in January of this year.Being an elected officer, as wellas a concerned member of this

club, part of my job asMembership Chairman is to come upwith ideas of how to get moremembers involved in Riesentoter.

I'm finding that the old adageapplies: "Hey, Dumbo, look firstin your own back yard."

At the latest count we have closeto 400 members in Riesentoter

Region. The PGA bylaws state thateach member may name either afamily member or an affiliatemember as long as that family oraffiliate member is 18 years of ageor older. Many times this area ofthe application is overlooked bythe new member. However, probably just as many times it isnot overlooked. And this, fellowPorschephiles, is where I havebeen negligent. I have overlookeda vital segment of our club'smembership, the family member(especially the spouse who in mostcases has contributed to thepurchase of the Porsche) and theaffiliate member! This is what has

been eating at my subconscious forthe past several months. Iapologize. Profusely.

If one were to ask me why I havenot listed the new member's familyor affiliate member in my columneach month, I would probably offera—lame- exc^ise having-sometbing. to.do with space. paperwork, continuity, deadlines, etc. Thefact is, I just plain haven't doneit. Honest, I'm not a chauvinist. Ihardly ever beat my wife. And 1even like children and domestic

animals.. .when they're asleep. From now on I promise to make aconcerted effort to acknowledgeeveryone and to get as manypeople involved as possible.

More on this next month. Rightnow I have to go meet the PastPresident for a couple ofshots-in-the-beers at the local

topless watering hole. He's helpingme with the final details on mynew gun rack for the rear windowof my 356 Cabriolet. But first, help me in welcoming the followingnew members:

SUMMIT POINT - '84

(JULy 20,21 and 22)

By Axut SkizldOnce more Porsche driving seasonis moving along in high gear. Bythe time you read this, severalRiesentoters will have spent somedays on various northeasternracetracks having themselves aball. Planning is already underway for Riesentoter's Driver'sEducation and PATTS Time Trials

weekend at Summit Point. Thisyear we have arranged to re it thetrack for three consecutive days,Friday, Saturday and Sjnday,July 20th, 21st and 22nd.

The price for all three days (orany part thereof) is a veryreasonable $65.00 per driver.Summit Point, a pretty, two mileroad course with changingelevations, is a pleasant three tothree and one-half hour drive fromthe Philadelphia area. The weekendis very social. Several caravans ofPorsches leave at various times, both to and from the track. Thereare group dinners, as well as atthe track beer blasts at the end ofeach day and a variety of partiesamong participants in and aboutthe motels near the track. This

year once again, all who mentionPCA will receive a 10% discount ontheir motel room at the Winchester,Virginia Howard Johnsons, whichhas become our unofficial

headquarters for this event.

Many of our new members, andthose of you who have not been toa PCA track event yet, may wellwonder what is a Driver's School

and Time Trial. Well, a PorscheDriving School isn't exactly likehigh school driver's ed. It is aschool designed to teach you howto drive a Porsche in the manner

in which it was meant to be

driven, i.e. very fast, that isfaster than is legal anywhere inthis land of opportunity (Mr.Reagan's 1980 campaign promisesnotwithstanding). A Driver'sSchool is a high speed event. Ourschool will utilize the full Summit

Point track. There will be no

pylons or other artificial obstaclesplaced anywhere on the course toslow you down. Each driver willget four runs per full track day, each run lasting approximatelytwenty minutes. Lap speeds for9n's average over 70 mph with atop speed of 125+ mph beingreached once on every lap (justbefore one brakes down to about

35 mph for a 180® turn to the

right).

Sound like fun? It is. But there is

no reason to be frightened orworried about you or yourPorsche. This is not a racingschool, but is a school to learnhow to drive your Porsche quicklyin a controlled and safe manner.

Highly qualified PCA instructorswill be on hand to explain properdriving techniques and you wilt besafely and progressively broughtup to speed so that you will beable to drive smoothly andconsistently fast and be verycomfortable doing so. Once youhave had this experience, youautomatically become a much saferstreet driver. Actually, driving ona track (without on-coming traffic, cross streets, stop signs or trafficlights) is much safer than on youraverage highway.

After two and one half days ofinstruction and practice, all thePorsches are separated into classes

Performance from Experience

based upon each model's potentialspeed. Then each participant isgiven at least two laps around anempty track. Each lap isseparately timed and trophies areawarded to the quickest in eachclass. A time trial, as this iscalled, may be as low- or high-keyas each entrant cares to make it.However, the weekend, as awhole, is definitely laid back andfun! This is a chance to takethree days away from the DelawareValley rat race and really get toknow your fellow Riesentoters.Riesentoter was one of the firstregions to hold PCA Driver'sSchools and our events haveearned an outstanding reputationover the years. For this traditionto continue, we will need theparticipation and help of many ofour members. Mark your calendarsnow and plan to join us for asuper three days at Summit Pointin July.
