Bakewell Buxton

Castleton Chatsworth

The ancient market town of Bakewell is the birthplace of the famous Bakewell Pudding.

There are many beautiful walks along the banks of the river Wye, which runs through the centre of the town. Upstream is Holme Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in England, and the site of Arkwright’s mill.

Markets are held every Monday, including a thriving livestock market at the Agricultural Centre.

Annual events include well dressing in June and the Bakewell Show, which takes place on the first Wednesday and Thursday in August.

The elegant spa town of Buxton is often described as “the gateway” to the Peak District National Park.

The town is home to the Pavilion Gardens and Conservatory, the Dome, Poole’s Cavern, the Crescent and magnificent Opera House.

You can explore the refurbished Victorian shopping arcade, sample Buxton spring water at St. Anne’s Well, or try a more conventional beverage in one of the many cafés or pubs in town.

The Buxton Festival of opera, music and literature takes place in July.

The picturesque village of Castleton is located at the western end of the Hope Valley and is overlooked by the Norman Peveril Castle.

Castleton is renowned for its four limestone show caves - Treak Cliff, Blue John, Peak and Speedwell and its numerous shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. The local area also contains some of the best walking, cycling, caving and rock climbing in England.

Seasonal treats include Garland Day (29 May) and the Christmas lights and carol concerts in the Peak and Treak Cliff caverns.

Chatsworth House is one of England’s finest country houses and the seat of the Duke of Devonshire.

The house stands on the banks of the river Derwent and within a 1000 acre park, which is open throughout the year.

Other attractions include the gardens of Capability Brown, a 300 year old cascade, the gravity fed Emperor fountain, a maze, farmyard, woodland adventure playground, shops and restaurants.

The annual Chatsworth Country Fair takes place in late August or early September.

C - Continues to Sheffield as service 82 via Ecclesall Road, in Sheffield runs via Eyre Street, Arundel Gate and Angel Street. D - From Charter Square, runs via Wellington Street, Fitzwilliam Street, Glossop Road and then as normal route. E - Runs via Hope Valley College. G - Does not run via Benty Lane or Sandygate Road. From Upper Hanover Street operates via Leavygreave Road, Gell Street, Glossop Road, West Street, Leopold Street, Pinstone Street, Furnival Gate and then as normal route to Sheffield Interchange. H - Operates to Hulleys depot (Baslow) at 1742.

There are two half hourly bus services:

• The X17 from Sheffield via Woodseats, Whittington Moor and Chesterfield. An hourly service extends to Matlock and Barnsley. Some Sunday journeys operate from Barnsley to Matlock via Meadowhall, Sheffield and Chesterfield.

• The 218 via Abbeydale Road, Totley, Baslow and Chatsworth to Bakewell. One Monday to Friday journey in each direction extends to Matlock.

There is one hourly combined bus service:

• The 271/272 via Ecclesall Road, Fox House, Hathersage and the Hope Valley to Castleton.

Other services include:

• The 65 via Eyam and Tideswell to Buxton. And one 65a journey.

• The 215 via Ecclesall Road, Fox House and Baslow to Bakewell on Monday-Friday.

• The 273/274 via Rivelin, Derwent, Bamford and Hope to Castleton.

• The 275 via Bamford, Hathersage and Eyam to Bakewell.
