The programme of events will culminate in two special Proms concerts on 18 th & 19 th July at the Royal Albert hall and broadcast on Radio 3. The centrepiece of its programme is a one-hour film on DVD, featuring performances of ten carefully selected pieces of classical music. Each piece is introduced by CBBC presenters who are are given the full TV treatment with special effects and animations. Key to the use of the film in schools is the direct engagement of pupils with the music; they are encouraged to make creative responses to the music through drama, dance, writing stories, craft work, and digital art. The Ten Pieces website is full of resources and ideas for teachers to help them get the most from the music. There is a full gallery of video clips and photographs of examples of pupils’ work in schools. So successful has been theuptake of Ten Pieces during theacademic year (8,500 primaryschools have participated), asecond phase project is nowplanned for secondary schools,beginning in October 2015 with afresh set of ten pieces, as shownhere.

When I read this list, I thoughtwhat a disgrace it is to offer Bach’siconic organ work in the Disneyformat, arranged for orchestra!More poignantly, it is a tragicmissed opportunity to showcasethe organ in front of thousands ofsecondary students.

In a less irate mood, it occurredto me that here was an idea thatwe organists could use as anoutreach tool in our local area. Ifwe were to identify ten organpieces that would attract theinterest of youngsters, we couldpromote this knowledge amongstprimary schools as an adjunct toour Children and the Organ (CATO)project. There would be little needto worry about creating a CD withall the attendant logistical andcopyright problems because thereis already a vast amount ofmaterial available and readilyaccessible on YouTube.

How would we choose our tenorgan pieces? I invite all membersand readers to send in theirsuggestions, and propose that asmall working group, perusing theresults, would then select ten withthe best potential to inspireyoungsters.

What criteria might be used forselection? Here, it is interesting toscan the lists compiled by the BBCTen Pieces teams and observe thediversity of the choices, withexplicit inclusion of works by livingcomposers. The BBC has declaredthe aim of the project “to open upthe world of classical music to children– and inspire them to develop theirown creative responses to the piecesthrough music, dance or digital art.” Itenvisages school-based activitiesfalling into three phases:

1. Inspiration2. Exploration and creativity3. Presentation and performance

With these factors in mind, myown preliminary thinking has comeup with ten composers, illustratedon the front cover. (I hope this issuitably balanced between British,French and German composers,but I have failed to suggest a livingorgan composer - we need to work

on this!). Clearly our greatest organhero, J.S.Bach, must feature in thelist, but is it compulsory that heshould be represented by the Dminor Toccata and Fugue? Possiblealternatives might be; The ‘Gigue’Fugue, ‘Wachet auf’, or perhapseven ‘Jesu, Joy of man’s Desiring’.

Handel: His music is generally soaccessible, but mainly available onorgan as transcription, e.g. Hornpipefrom The Water Music. The organconcerti are valuable items of thepure organ repertoire, but whichwould you choose? I havefrequently played the ‘Cuckoo andthe Nightingale’ to young audiences.

Purcell: There are several greattrumpet tunes to choose from.

Samuel Wesley: I thought that hisAir and Gavotte might be a suitablesofter contribution to a programmethat could easily be crowded withloud bombastic pieces.

John Stanley: He remains foreverthe organists’ favourite, havingbequeathed a library of so manyplayable and tuneful Voluntaries.How about his Trumpet Tune?

Mendelssohn: Probably his mostfrequently performed piece on theorgan is the transcribed WeddingMarch, however I would proposethat his 3rd Sonata is equal ingrandeur but with the bonus of anexciting double fugue, and serenecantabile conclusion.

Boëllmann: His Toccata from theSuite Gothique, with its spookypedal tune always seems togenerate excitement.

Messiaen: This composer mayseem an odd choice for inspiring 10year-olds, but the likes and dislikesof young children can often beunpredictable; quirkiness cansometimes be a strange attraction.I think Transports de joie fromL’Ascension is worth a try. OlivierLatry’s performance on YouTube iscertainly spectacular.

Whitlock: A widely admiredBritish composer; as a gentlepiece, his Scherzo or Folk Tunefrom Five Pieces would serve well,whereas if we wanted to show offthe Tuba stop, his Fanfare fromFour Extemporisations is a strongcandidate.

Lefébure-Wély: His namesprang to mind because of hisSortie in E flat which alwayssucceeds in raising a smile.

��So there are my ‘starter for ten’

thoughts. Now what do youthink? Don’t be constrained bymy suggestions here, but bear inmind sound reasons for yourchoices.

Recent EventsMay meeting – Annual Dinner

For the second year running theupper room of the Black Boy, Heageprovided the venue for this annualsocial event. As always, a friendlyatmosphere prevailed and manytales were exchanged.

Our Guest of Honour was HughMorris who arrived in Derby inJanuary to take up his new post asDirector of Music at the Cathedral.After a rather long wait for thedessert course Hugh rose to his feetin buoyant spirit. He began bydeclaring that he had landed hisperfect job at the Cathedral andwent on to describe how hisprevious career paths had happilyconverged on Derby. Having movedfrom Christchurch on the Dorset-Hampshire border, he hasexchanged the rivers Stour andAvon for the Derwent, andexchanged the lush hinterland of theNew Forest for the beautifulDerbyshire Dales. ApparentlyChristchurch is known for thematurity of its adult population, withone street in the town beingdistinguished as the most elderly inNorthern Europe! In spite of this, asDirector of Music at ChristchurchPriory, Hugh had successfully builtup a boys’ choir and girls’ choir,each of eighteen singers.Notwithstanding this, he was alsoAssistant Head of Music atBournemouth (Grammar) School forGirls.

Hugh’s spell on the south coastwas preceded by a period inNorthumberland, as AssistantOrganist at Hexham Abbey. Hespoke warmly of this lovely placewith its thriving choir, progressiveliturgy and beautiful organ(Lawrence Phelps, 1974). In itstime, the organ was in the vanguardof new mechanical action

instruments in this country, andHugh counted it as a great privilegeto have been a regular player of thisspecial organ. If Hexhamencouraged Hugh to hone his organtechnique, then his previous post asOrgan Scholar at SalisburyCathedral, taught him all he neededto know about achieving highstandards in choral training and thegreat canon of cathedral music.Here his mentor was David Halls, theDirector of Music, who is well knownfor setting the benchmark forcathedral choirs. Still movingbackwards into history, Hughrecalled his undergraduate days inCambridge when, despite hisapparent junior role as OrganScholar at Magdalene College, hefound himself learning to doabsolutely everything inmaintenance of the chapel music.And during vacations, instead offilling supermarket shelves like mostof his fellow students, he found amuch more lucrative part-time jobplaying for funerals in his home areaaround Abingdon.

So it is that Hugh brings to Derby awealth of diverse practicalexperience at different levels;school, college, cathedral and parish.Without doubt he has hardly everinhabited an ivory tower, but hasunderstood the hard work of creatingand promoting music at the parishlevel. Accordingly, Hugh wound uphis story by declaring his wish to usethe cathedral as a power base forcollaboration with church musiciansin the whole diocese, so we can alllook forward to seeing him out andabout in the parishes as well as atgreat events at Derby Cathedral.

To enthusiastic applause, ourChairman, John Maxwell-Jonesthanked Hugh for sharing his visionof past and future with such charmand candour.

Member’s NoticeCoffee and Cake Concerts atWalsall

Most Newsletter readers will beaware of some of the work myTrust undertakes in the organworld. It supports local concerts,especially at St Andrew’s,Swanwick, and capital projectsassociated with the Willis organs inLiverpool Cathedral. This summer itwill be part-sponsoring threelunchtime concerts at BroadwayUnited Reformed Church, Walsall,WS5 3PH. The talented playershave been chosen by Broadway’sDirector of Music, Alan Taylor, andwill feature recitalists who are atthe beginning of their careers.Hopefully they will playprogrammes which are “accessible”in nature and will attract anaudience both of organ-lovers andsome individuals still to beconverted! Broadway is about 40minutes travel time from Derby,mainly down the A38, and there isplenty of parking at the church.Concerts are free, but with retiringcollections.

The organ at Broadway is animpressive four manual 51speaking stops instrument, puttogether over the years by AlanTaylor and fellow enthusiasts.

Each concert (starting at11.15am) will last about 45minutes, perhaps a little longer,and at the conclusion there will beopportunity to chat with the playersover coffee and cake.

The players will be:

On a recent visit to Bonn, westayed at a hotel – the CollegiumLeoninum – which had originallybeen built in 1897 as the priests’seminary of the archbishopric ofCologne. The seminary’s ‘AlteKirche’, a tall, resonant building,is now used as a conference roomand concert hall, and houses asmall but beautifully-voiced Klaisorgan, dating from 1911, and alarge Fazioli grand piano.

I was delighted to be allowed toplay the organ and found that,although, at first sight, thespecification (see below)appeared somewhat limited, witha Hauptwerk (Great) consistingonly of two 8’ stops, by judicioususe of the couplers a surprisingvariety of registrations waspossible and a very effectivechorus build-up. The action waspneumatic, but quite sensitive,and the stops controlled by rockerswitches. The pedal board wasstraight and flat.

On the last night of our stay, wewere treated to a privatedemonstration recital, on theorgan and the piano, by MarkusKaras, organist of Bonn Münstersince 1989, which included musicby Stanley, Mozart, Franck (thea-minor Choral), Liszt (Preludeand Fugue on BACH) and some ofhis own compositions, whichconfirmed just how versatile thislittle organ could be - a realmultum in parvo instrument.

Since returning home, I havecorresponded with Herr Karas andhe has sent me, as a pdf file, acopy of his ‘Drei Choralvorspiele imBachschen Kontrapunkt’ on ‘Aufmeinen lieben Gott’, with hispermission to provide copies to

Members’ NewsBreathing new life into theAbbott

Many members are familiar withthe large three manual Abbottorgan in St Luke's, Derby and willhave seen previous articles aboutthe chequered history of theinstrument (Newsletter 25, July2011).

Malcolm Spink of Leeds has nowcompleted the most recent phaseof the organ's restoration, andvery successfully, too. The Greatpipes were completely removed toallow the refurbishment of warpedsliders - one no longer pullsoneself off the bench trying todraw stops! The Choir pipeworkwas removed, cleaned and putback on speech and damagedstoppers replaced.

The top shutters of the Swell,probably disconnected when thebalanced swell pedal was installed,have been reinstated allowingmuch more of the sound to escapeinto the nave. Also helping theegress of sound is the newwooden canopy built over theGreat to protect from dust andcrumbling stonework. The Pedalshave been put on electric actionand now speak properly for thefirst time in decades, addingconsiderable weight to the sound.

The quality of the work andexcellent tuning by Malcolm hasresulted in a stunning sound thatmust be very close to that of theorgan when it was first installed.

Many of us are familiar with theinner workings of a pipe organ, butan opportunity to visit the workshopof an organ builder always bringswith it that fascination for the‘behind-the-scenes’ stories thatsurround building and restorationprojects. Thus it was for merecently, joining the Organ Club fortheir visit to the Peter Collins worksat Melton Mowbray.

As members may well know, Peteris an indefatigable raconteur, andhis stories came thick and fast ashe personally conducted about 30members on a complete tour of hisfactory. Now into his 70s, Petershows no signs of slowing down.He is still designing new organs andhis firm has a full order book.Under one roof, his skilledcraftsmen make all the maincomponents of pipe organs, withthe exception of pedal boards. Hehas embraced much that newtechnology and computers cancontribute to the design process,but crucially, he manufactures allhis own pipes, for which there is nosubstitute for the skill of humanintellect, ear and craftsmanship.

I cannot do justice to Peter’sencyclopaedic tour guide style, buthopefully these photos convey ataste of the master builder at thetop of his game.

Building a Desktop One-Manual ‘Virtual’ Organ - Alan DronsfieldIn the May issue of this Newsletter I wrote about the

magnificent house organ that Dr David Pitches hadconstructed based on the Hauptwerk principle. I said“With the Hauptwerk system, each pipe in the organ isrecorded several times in the building which houses theorgan. The notes are then combined and digitised. When a“Hauptwerk” note is played from the keyboard, we hear theoriginal sound, including both the “attack” and “decay” thusreproducing the original acoustic. The software also extendsthe note for however long the key is depressed”. I also gavesome indication of the cost of the Hauptwerk software,available from Milan Digital Audio. However softwarebased on the Hauptwerk principle for reproducingorgan tones is also available on the Internet at nocost, thanks to the enthusiasts responsible for theGrandOrgue and JOrgan projects. Recently, “live” CDshave become available from both developments whichenable us to test the systems without making anyalterations to our computers. The software on the CDinstalls itself in the computer’s memory and operatesfrom there, without the requirement of the hard drive.You will need a CD of the software, a computer offairly recent specification (64 bit capable with morethan 1 GB of RAM), decent computer speakers, a MIDIkeyboard and a means of connecting this to thecomputer.

The kitEither a desktop or laptop computer will suffice,

though if you use the internal speakers in a laptop, thesound will obviously be completely inadequate forreproducing bass tones and generally disappointing.For decent results you need to connect the audiooutput on the computer to an external amplifiedspeaker system. I use Yamaha external speakers witha subwoofer which is very good for bass. Howeverremarkably good results can sometimes be obtainedwith pocket-sized units such as BOSE “Soundlink Mini”.

Successhere should encourage you to purchase a MIDI keyboardso that you can play proper melody and harmony. Theseare available second-hand on Ebay, typically for £40,and you will need a MIDI-USB connector to link them toyour computer. These cost about £4.00, again fromEbay.

The GrandOrgue Virtual Organ

To start, you will need to make or obtain a GrandOrguelive CD as explained in the box above.

Next, you will have to boot up directly from the CD toaccess the program. Most PC computers are set up toinstall the Windows operating system from the harddrive when you switch on. The GrandOrgue live CDcontains an alternative operating system called Linuxwhich has to be initially loaded into the computer’s RAMmemory (not on the hard drive like most Windowsprograms when installed). To boot up the computerdirectly from the CD, you have to restart your computer(with the disk still in position) and hold down the F12key*. You should see a boot option screen giving you alist of choices; Use the arrow keys to illuminate the CDoption and press Enter. As booting begins, a prompt willinvite you to load GOtoGO. Select this and theGrandOrgue program will install itself. Now you needsome patience; the process takes several minutes, buteventually your wait will be rewarded with a picture ofthe organ console:

Download the relevant file to your computer fromhttp://sourceforge.net/projects/ourorgan/files/GOLive/Look for the iso file (about 600MB), save it on thedesktop and then burn on to a CD in ‘bootable form’.(The free software Ashampoo Burning Studio 6 is goodfor this).

In this article I shall focus on the GrandOrguesoftware. In a further article I shall consider the JOrgansoftware which offers a wider range of sampled organs.I have tested the software on a variety of computersand I have to say that not all work with the CDs. Myrecommendation is, therefore, to get hold of the freesoftware and try it out, before going to the expense ofpurchasing a MIDI keyboard. You can play the notes by

After connecting the keyboard and switching it on,you will need to restart the computer with the disk inplace and reboot GrandOrgue as before. When thescreen display of the console reappears, there is onemore adjustment in order to make your keyboard ‘talk’to the software:

Draw one or two stops and then position the mouseover ONE of the manuals and RIGHT click. A MIDI-Settings dialogue box will come up, as below. Click on“Listen to event” and tap a key on the MIDI keyboard.The parameters for your keyboard will appear in theboxes. Click on OK and you now should be able toplay that particular manual from the keyboard. If youcan’t, then you might have to enter the parametersmanually. RIGHT click again and copy those shown inthe picture here.

editor and me half an afternoon to sort it all out. Inprinciple, the MIDI output from a digital organ containsseveral channels, one for each manual and another forthe pedalboard. To assign each manual to the virtualones on the GrandOrgue screen, point to one on thescreen, and RIGHT click to show the MIDI-Settingsdialogue box. As before, click on “Listen to event” andtap a key on the organ manual. The parameters willshow the appropriate channel for that manual. Repeatthe process for the other manual(s) and pedals.

Now you can play the virtual organ from your digitalorgan. Good luck!

Next time I will describe the setting up of 20 or sofree virtual organs with the JOrgan disk. Themethodology is very similar, so I will be able to keepthe technical bits to a minimum, and concentrate onexploring the sounds of great cathedral organs inBritain and Europe.

Post script - some points to look out for:

a) MIDI = Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Thisstandard of electronic communication was devisedby the music industry before the computerindustry devised the USB communication systempresent in all modern computers. Thus a specialMIDI to USB connector is needed for connectingour keyboard to the computer.

b) There are two MIDI plugs, each of the DIN type.The one labelled ‘IN’ must be connected to the‘OUT’ socket on the keyboard.

c) The Linux operating system can only identify theUSB connector when it boots up, which is why youhave to restart your computer when you connectthe keyboard. If you have already plugged in theUSB connector at boot up, you don’t have torestart.

Along the top toolbar, second box from the left,there’s the volume control. Set it to 10. (If you laterget distortion with your sound system, you will need toreduce this value.)

Draw one or two stops by mouse-clicking on them andplay a note by mouse-clicking a note on one of themanuals. If you hear it, then well done! You canexperiment with different stops and different notes todemonstrate that the system works, but very soon youwill want to connect a MIDI keyboard and use that tocontrol the notes properly to make music.

If you have got so far, and if you have a two or threemanual home organ with MIDI inputs and outputs, itshould be possible to connect all the manuals andpedals to the GrandOrgue software installed on thecomputer. It’s not for the faint-hearted: it took your

Recital by Young Organists: Matthew Gibson and Henry MetcalfeSaturday 29th August at 1.00pm, Derby Cathedral

Matthew Gibson is both the organ scholar at Trent College and Derby Cathedral wherehis duties include studying under the music department as well as playing at theCathedral's daily services. At Trent, Matthew studies English Literature, History, Politicsand Music whilst being expected to play for chapel services, concerts and tours. Thissummer the school be touring Venice which will see Matthew playing high mass at both StMark's and St Anthony's in Padua. He previously held a music scholarship to DenstoneCollege in addition to being organist at St Mary & St Modwen's Church, Burton Upon-Trent.

Henry Metcalfe has been an organist since he was ten and has been studying withMartyn Rawles at Lichfield Cathedral for the past five years. He attends King Edward VILichfield and is taking his GCSEs next year with hopes to gain a sixth form organscholarship and on to a University Scholarship. His goal is to become a cathedral organistand is currently Assistant Director of Music at St. Michael’s Lichfield. Last year he won aRecital Award on the Oundle for Organists Summer School. Henry is also currentlylearning the French horn and Piano as well as taking Singing lessons at the Cathedral.

DDOA visit to Liverpool Saturday 11th July

Our annual outing this year should be a memorable one. Given the lownumbers in recent years the Committee has sadly come to the conclusion it is nolonger viable to take a coach.
