President's Message
Since my last Message (you doremember reading it, don't you -"yeah, sure, it was the one aboutuh, huh..."), we've had our firstmeeting, and if you weren't there,you missed a good one. Lisa didan excellent job obtaining BertilRoos as our guest speaker. Hispresentation was both informativeand entertaining. The combinationof his Swedish accent, dry hiimorand sense of timing really keptall hanging on every word. Ioverheard several people makingplans to enroll in one of hiscourses. This is the type ofprogram we're hoping to have eachmonth, and if you check out Lisa'sschedule, I think you'll see thatwe will achieve our goal!
The memorial retirement of A1Holbert's number 14 before theDaytona 24 Hour was very welldone. The IMSA people and allothers involved are to becongratulated. Everything wasdone tastefully and with a greatdeal of respect for Al's memory,and for his family, all of whomwere there. It was very touchingto see so many "important" peopletake the time to walk out to themain straight to share in thismoment. It only goes to reinforcethe depth of feeling that theracing community and everyone hasfor Al. There was a glitch in theceremony, and the embarrassingthing was that it was our (HolbertRacing's) fault. In the hecticpace of the weekend...what withtrying to race the Miller 962 andcoordinate the "last lap of 103",someone did not properly installthe right front wheel - and itcame undone at the chicane withMr. Holbert in the driver's seat!Being a true professional, though,he was undaunted and completed thelap on three wheels, and was able
to joke about it later. The teamwas really up to score a win forAl with the #68 car, but a host ofmechanical ills forced our earlyretirement. The #67 Miller 962did emerge the winner, so at leasta Miller-sponsored Porsche visitedWinner's Circle. In effect, "we"won the 24 Hour for Al.
There are a couple things comingup in the next months that I justwant to remind you to work intoyour schedules.
I mentioned Sebring last month;try to attend. Rick Marshall, ourSocial Chairman, has been spawningideas for some really excitingevents - tours, socials, parties,etc. At the Car Show coming up onMarch 17—19, we will have a boothtrying to recruit new members. Ifyou would care to display yourpride and joy [your car, not yourgirlfriend (although...)] at theshow, call Rick. Any "clean"Porsche should do well, you'llprobably win a trophy! If youwould like to help out, call Rickand schedule a time to "work thebooth". I know I plan tohelp...maybe I'll meet someone!Our first Driver's School will behere before you know it; send inyour registration form, - but notbefore the proper date. Also,start saving your dollars for the944 drawing. We'll be gettingthat underway early this year.

Just a note to you Porschefanatics. I recently had aproblem with my Bridgestone tiresand called John Baker at
Leitzinger Motorsports where I hadpurchased them. John instructedme to ship my tires back and hewould take a look. After several
hours of testing, he called andsaid there was an unusual problemwith the tires and they would haveto be sent back to Bridgestone.Instead of leaving me earless,John remounted my rims with newRE71s and sent them back at no
charge. He explained thatBridgestone would decide on how tohandle the problem and he wouldlet me know if there would be anycharge.
I was both surprised and elatedand just want to let the rest ofyou know what a great friend ourclub has in John Baker and in
Leitzinger Motorsports. Theydeserve our support and yourPorsche deserves a nice set of
Bridgestone RE71s. (Jeff Brok)
Tech Session, April 8

Spring is coming, and it's time toget your Porsche out of winter
storage. The best way to be sureall the cobwebs are out of yourcar is to bring it to a techsession, and the first one of theyear will be held on April 8 atHolbert's Porsche, Route 611 inWarrington. This is 2 weeksbefore our Mid-Ohio event.
Before entering any track event,your Porsche has to be teched to
ensure that it will be as safe as
possible when on the track. Acopy of the tech inspection sheetwill be sent to each registrant,and this includes all safetyrelated items. We will hold techsessions 1 or 2 weeks before eachtrack event so you will have ampletime to have your car repaired ifnecessary.
Attendance at these tech sessionsis mandatory for any Riesentoterattending one of our track events,unless you have the inspectiondone at a qualified shop. Therewill be no at-the-track inspectionsbut cars will be rechecked at gridtech. Remember that thisinspection does not replace statevehicle inspection or vice versa.
Many other projects can be done attech sessions, since lifts areavailable and the parts departmentopen - basically, anything that youcan do in six hours (9am to 3pm)or less. Typical items would beoil changes, tune-up, accessoryinstallation, suspension work andbrake pad replacement.
There will be a seminar on properbleeding of the hydraulic brakesystem - something you will wantto do before running Mid-Ohio.

Exec. Committee Minutes Vicki O'Coimell
The February meeting was held onthe 10th at Vem Lyle's house, andthose present were: Rex Carle, JimConfer, Lisa Lutz-Confer, JimHartman, Betsi Leidy, Paul andSybil Margaritis, Bill and VickiO'Connell, Bob Patton, Art Rothe,Bob Russo and Vem Lyle. Guests inattendance were Bill Cooper, andJerry and Janet Weger.
Art Rothe agreed to be the Club'sOfficial Greater at the Februarymeeting, but other volunteerswould be appreciated. See anyoneon the Exec Committee.
It was decided to treat our guestspeaker, Tom Hessert, to dinnerprior to the meeting.
The cost of using Camp Hideawayfor the Club Picnic has gone up$100 this year. We will charge $3for everyone over 12. Perhaps wewill look into a new place for thefollowing year.
Minutes of the general meetings andExec meetings will go to DebbieCooper, Historian, for the files.
The price of the Christmas Banquetwill be kept to last year's ifpossible. Perhaps we could use ahall and caterer like the yearbefore. Rick to look into this.
Cost of raffle tickets will againbe $50 with only 944 tickets sold.Tickets should be available forMarch Car Show. Vem will sendmailers to all PCA newslettereditors.
In A1 Anderson's absence, noreport from the Treasury was given.Last year's books will be audited.Deposit needed for Pocono event.
We are using a new printer for DERGASSER, giving better quality at alower price. There was still someconfusion over which advertisershad paid for which year. Art Rothewill contact those advertisers whohave not paid for previous years.No bills had been sent out foradvance payment in 89, so thefollowing changes were made: 1)The Editor will bill and collectfor ads, 2) Billing period will befrom March to following February,to give incoming Editor somethingto work with in January, 3)Advertisers who had already paidfor 88 will get a bonus, in thatads that were published in Jan andFeb of this year will be free.
Currently, one advertiser wants topay the Club $200 to label amailing for him announcingspecials available only to RTRmembers. After some discussion,we agreed, since the mailing listwould not leave our hands.
A discussion ensued on what thepurpose of a meeting should be.i.e., all current business andsocial, vs. social only. This wastabled for future discussion.
Rex will look into a new switchfor the autocross timer. Workerassignments at our events will bemore formal, so a few people don'tget stuck with all the work.
By-Law discussion continued withmore suggestions and no resolutionsto date.
John Baker of Leitzinger's gave uslots of Bridgestone calendars, tobe given out at the meetings,perhaps in conjunction with the50/50 drawings.
Rap at Idle The Editor
Russ Hunsberger was the first tosupply the correct answer to lastmonth's trivia question, "What isthe one standard part that will fitall cars?" The Schrader valve
(the guts of the tire valve stem)is what we were looking for. Therewere some good guesses: licenseplate or bolts, the horn, and thedriver(?). The valve cap wouldhave been accepted, but Russ wasfirst. He received a set of
chrome-plated valve stems for hiseffort. Hey, suppose it was abattery or something - we wouldhave done the same thing!
After winning the Daytona 24 Hour,John Andretti thanked all his
sponsors, and included "the Porschpeople". I think if I were offereda ride in a $half-million car, Iwould make an effort to pronouncethe company's name correctly. SomeRTR members do the same thing andI can think of no good reason forit. Ignorance might explain itthe first time, but after you'veheard it said properly? Maybeignorance explains that, too. Ifthe shoe fits... There will be atest every time you tell someonewhat kind of car you drive. Theymight know that it's Porsche, andwon't you look foolish!

A sad note to report: longtime Clubmember George Howard passed awaylast week. George was very activein the 60s and 70s, a good driver,and a friend to many in the Club.Our condolences to his wife Dot,and children, Mark and Georgia.
The track shown on last month's
cover was not Comog as I hadthought. Bob Russo finallyconvinced me that it was Bushkill
Pines. I intended to go to bothplaces and shoot pictures from thesame angle, but alas, neither oneexists anymore.
I must remind you that the deadlinefor DER GASSER is the date of the
monthly meeting (last Wednesday ofthe month) for publication in thefollowing month's issue. I oftenget ads later than that, whichwon't be published for 2 months.

With the first event of our 1989Riesentoter Autocross Series only
a short 2 months away, now is thetime to begin preparing yourPorsche for the racing seasonahead. Don't wait until the dayof the event to find out that youcan't compete due to a problemthat could have easily been takencare of beforehand. Every carmust submit to a thorough safetyinspection prior to competition,and these are some of the thingsthat we will be checking:- Battery mounting must be secure- Throttle linkage must not be
stiff or binding- Wheel bearings should have little
or no play- Brake fluid at proper level- Brake pedal feel - no sponginess- No excessive oil leakage- General safety, including proper
functioning of seat belts
It is also a good idea to be surethat your Porsche is in a goodstate of tune. Some other itemsyou can check are; oil level,coolant level and tire pressures.A good helmet is required, and youshould try it on in the car to besure you have enough head room.All loose items must be removed,you don't want something rollingfrom under the seat and stickingunder the brake pedal. Once youhave taken care of all these
technical matters ahead of time,you will be better able toconcentrate on your driving.
Next month I'll talk about what toexpect at the autocross school.In the meanwhile, tune it up andget ready for Autocross 89.

Porsche vs. Corvette

After explaining that the spellingof Porsche on the Corvette Club'sadvertising flyer needed an "S",we got down to organizing theChallenge. In this annual event,the Corvettes attempt - howeverunsuccessfully — to outclass thePorsches (Ed. note: outrun. Art,never outclass) in a relativelylow speed autocross. This yearsChallenge will be held June 3 atPocono International Raceway aspart of the Corvette Club'sEastern Sectional Meet. All carsare welcome to participate in theautocross and/or a high speedevent on the north course,
Porsches are scheduled to run theautocross in the Saturday afternoonsession, with Corvettes running inboth morning and afternoon. Carswill be classed in our standardclasses for past Challenges. Thecourse will be located at thesouth end of the track and will bepyloned to keep the speed down.Trophies will be presented at abeer and snack party at the nearbyHoliday Inn that evening. Needlessto say, a lot of Corvettes will bethere and we need a good turnoutto stand our ground.
For PCA members who register byApril 15, the cost of theAutocross will be $20. If yousign up between the 16th and the30th of April, it's $25; laterthan that and it's $30. Send acheck to Dave Walter, P.O.Box 333,Dillsburg, PA 17019, made out toC.V.C.C. It should be clearlyindicated that you want to sign upfor event # E-024.
For those who wish to go up againsta Corvette during a high speedevent, (Ed. note; "relatively")you can sign up for the Jme 3high speed morning or afternoonsessions. Also, you can do doubleduty by running the high speedcourse in the morning and theautocross in the afternoon. The
high speed session is $80 up toApril 30th and $90 thereafter.Write event # E-025 on your check.

We are entering at least 5 cars inthe Custom Car & Van Show March 17,18, and 19 at the Civic Center.All members are invited to attendand support our entries. We stillneed volunteers to man the booth,if interested let me know.
Plans are being finalized for ourfirst ever Straight-Line Autocrossat AtCO Raceway. A few membershave expressed an interest and itlooks like it's gonna happen.Give me a call to reserve a spotsince attendance will be limited.We also will be going back toMalibu Grand Prix on May 20. Thiswill be an excellent opportunityto try out your new-found drivingskills after the autocross school.
There will be a new Spirit ofPhiladelphia docked at Penn'sLanding on June 1, and we'relooking to cruise this new vesselon July 15. I'd also like tostart planning a summer trip, butI'm looking for some input as to alocation. Gettysburg, InnerHarbor, and Washington, B.C. arepossibilities, but we're alwaysopen to suggestions.
No Clutch?

In an emergency, it is possible todrive your Porsche with a brokenclutch cable. This technique hasbeen found to work with the leastwear and tear on the car.
1. Stop the engine and then engagefirst gear.
2. When ready to proceed, startthe engine (with 1st gear engaged),releasing the key as soon as themotor starts, and you can move offas normal.
3. Accelerate to second gear speedand shift to neutral on a slightletup of the gas pedal.
4. As engine speed decreases to2nd gear speed (watch the tach),shift briskly into 2nd.
5. Proceed in similar fashion tohigher or lower gears, alwaystrying to best match engine speedto gear desired while in neutralposition.
6. To stop, shift briskly intoneutral and stop normally. Turnoff motor. To proceed, followdirections above. It is best tomotor to your nearest dealer (orfriend) for repairs as soon aspossible.

that most clubs run under (you willsee why RTR doesn't) and a littlebroader overview may help.
Some of the allowable changes inthe Stock Category are: stainlesscovered brake lines; steeringwheel, if diameter is not changedmore than 1 inch; front anti-rollbar can be changed; suspension maybe adjusted through its designedrange of travel (no machining);and tires must have "measurable
tread".

the rules; a $6 rulebook will tellyou more than you want to know.
The car classifications are prettysubjective and loosely conform tothe concept that similar type carsrun together. Well, it's theirrulebook, so here's what you get.A Stock - all 911 (except Turbo),914-6, 928 and 356 4-cam. (See?)The competition on a Divisionaland National level is from Lotus.
In B Stock, the only Porsches arethe 944S2 and 944 Turbo, and up tothis year the class has been thelate-model Corvette's territory.They've been moved out, so thiscould get interesting. In C Stock,the competition for the 914-2.0and the 944 16V are Mazda RX-7s.
D Stock is a toss-up, and if yourun a 914 1.7 or 1.8, 924 Turbo,924S or a 944 8V, you'll find out.

E Stock, an alphabet soup of cars,is usually won by a VW frontdriver,and includes the 356, 912 and 924.
There is a new classification forthis year called Super Stock - theconcept is either that these carsare too fast for their regularclass (doubtful), or they are allexotics (whatever that means).The latter is more like SGCA's
thinking. The 911 Club Sport, 930,928S & S4, and 944 Turbo S get torun against 84-on Corvettes, LotusEsprit and the Pontiac Trans-Am V6Turbo. My guess is that SCCAwanted to get the really fastCorvettes out of B Stock and givethem a showcase to run in. (TheLotus and Pontiac must be asking'what are we doing here?') As muchas I love Porsches, I'm not surethat any of our late-model carscan match the national level Vettes
that I've seen. (However, ifsomeone wants to loan out their
Club Sport for the potential gloryof the House of Porsche, I know acapable driver willing to try.)
If you choose to go to StreetPrepared, the rulesmakers assumethat you will make every changeallowed. Thus the basic 4-cylcars are in CSP, where the HondaCRX or the VW GTI usually win; the928 is in BSP against older Vettes;and all other Porsches are in ASP!
Well, 911s have dominated thisclass so far, but the Vettes fromSuper Stock could surprise us all,since they can also be prepared tothe full extent of the ASP rules.

Mechanicsburg
Well, it used to be held there, butno longer is it in Mechanicsburg,it is now at Ski Roundtop, nearLewisberry, PA. No one knowswhere that is either, so payattention. Take the PA turnpike toHarrisburg, get on 183 South; takeExit 18 (Rt 114) - stay awake, asI recall, it is the first exityou'll see. Left at T (you'll goonto Rt 114 but there is no signat this intersection). Staystraight to pick up Rt 382 (whereRt 114 goes right). Right onto Rt177, left onto Pinetown Road, thenfollow the signs to the Ski Area.
Now, why would anyone want to gothere? It is just one of thelargest flea markets for Porscheparts on the east coast. Peopleclean out their garages and you canfind all kinds of goodies at mostlyreasonable prices - and haggling isexpected. You can also sell yourown pre-loved treasures for a smallvendor's fee. Many cars are ondisplay, some for sale, but I thinkthe biggest attraction is thepeople themselves. You thoughtvou were crazy about Porsches? Youcould meet people there who cantell you what year car a certainrusty bolt came from, whether it isfrom the right or left side, and ifit was early or late production,and you can own it for 50^. It isreally a fascinating event. Comejoin the fun, Sunday April 22.

RTR Car Portfolio

We have suspected that the clubhad a good array of cars. Now,for the first time, we haveassembled the portfolio by yearand car type.
Of interest is that the clubrecords show that 746 residentmembers own 793 cars. Who knowshow many cars we don't have onfile! The preference is for 911based cars, with 453 examples.Unfortunately, many had to bebunched under a general headingsince specific model info wasn'tavailable.
A provocative thought after lookingat the list is to guess what theportfolio is worth. Nice that youthink this way, because we have acontest for you: guess the correctvalue and win a $100 giftcertificate to the Goodie Store.
To raise some fimds for thetreasury, just send $5 and yourguess to me, or bring it to theMarch or April meeting an' give toany club officer. Bob Ruaso willopen the "sealed envelope" at theApril meeting and we will find outwho came the closest. (You do nothave to be present to win.)
A word about how the portfolio wasvalued is in order. A nationallypublished car valuation guide wasthe source and retail valuationfor an average Porsche was used.Average means a clean car, with nomechanical or serious cosmeticdefects. It is not a concours orrestored car, nor is it a car withtired paint or serious mechanicalproblems. Some judgement was usedon cars where no specific modelwas identified. Also, the factoryrace cars were given conservative,imrestored valuations.
A hint on the value: a lot less
than the national budget deficit,but a lot more than your club'soperating budget. Good luck!
