FROM THE PRINCIPAL Term one has sailed by very quickly, again. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, parents and community members of Aveley Primary School for your efforts and support in ensuring a smooth start to 2018 and a successful first term. To our students, well done for your tremendous efforts this term. Congratulations on ensuring you follow our school’s Behaviour Expectations. This combined effort makes our school a safe and friendly place to be. Alongside our emphasis on expected behaviours, our school continues to focus on the explicit teaching of ‘Goal Setting’. I have appreciated the opportunity to view a range of student work this term. It has been particularly rewarding to share the excitement with students as they achieve their goals. Thank you. ANZAC SERVICE

Our Student Councillors attended the community ANZAC Service this week at Woodlake. This occasion is attended by representatives from schools in the

Ellenbrook area.

Aveley Primary School Community Members participated in our 2018 ANZAC Day Service yesterday. Thank you to our special guests and community members for supporting us on this special occasion. Thank you also to the parents who assisted with making

wreaths.

INCENTIVES – INTRINSIC & EXTRINSIC

A balance of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation is required to engage and challenge students. Intrinsic motivation refers to behaviour that is driven by internal rewards. In other words, the motivation to engage in a behaviour arises from within the individual because it is naturally satisfying. Extrinsic motivation (the encouragement of optimum performance through rewards) takes many forms in our school. At Aveley PS one of our extrinsic motivators is the distribution of House Tokens. These tokens (in appropriate House colours) are distributed to students for a range of appropriate behaviour (with a particular emphasis to goal setting and the Behaviour Matrix, both in classrooms and the playground. A lucky draw is held with individual winners being announced each Monday. Tokens are also tallied up by House Captains and the winning House is rewarded each term.

The winning House for Term 1 was Orion. Congratulations to all our students from Orion who enjoyed an extended recess break today.

NEVER STOP READING

Did you know that research suggests that many families stop reading to their children once they are able read themselves? Research also suggests that the positive effects of reading aloud to your children extends to their social and emotional development, as well as their reading skills. All students in years 3 – 5 will receive a bookmark to promote this initiative. I would encourage you to take the opportunity to read to your child, irrespective of how old they are. More information is available at https://www.education.wa.edu.au/neverstopreading .

MENINGOCOCCAL VACCINE

The Department of Health advises that, due to the rising number of meningococcal infections in the 12 month to 4-year-old bracket in WA last year, parents of age-eligible children are able to access a free meningococcal ACWY catch-up vaccine. Families should see their GP or immunisation provider. More information is available at www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunisation.

AUSTRALIAN EARLY DEVELOPMENT CENSUS (AEDC)

Our school will be taking part in the AEDC next term. The AEDC is an Australian Government initiative run by the Department of Education and Training conducting a nationwide census of early childhood development. This census, which involves only Pre-Primary students, highlights what is working well and what needs to be improved or developed to support children and their families by providing evidence to support health, education and community policy and planning. The AEDC takes place every three years. More information is available at https://www.aedc.gov.au/about-the-aedc .

NEW RESOURCES

Thanks to the fantastic support of our Aveley Primary School families and community members we collected a massive amount of points during the Woolworths Earn and Learn Program last year. We were able to purchase a number of educational resources to support our school. Our students look forward to using these additional resources. Well done!

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAYS – TERM 2

School Development Days are negotiated student free days which are used for staff development and school planning. This year, we have two School Development Days in Term 2, being the first Monday, 30 April, and Friday, 1 June, the Friday before the WA Day long weekend. Monday, 30 April will see school staff involved in a range of Professional Learning, including a presentation by staff from the North East Metro Language Development Centre to support our whole Literacy Program. Additional time will be spent on school planning. On Friday, 1 June, staff will be involved in the Combined Ellenbrook Network School Development Day Conference, to be held at Ellenbrook Secondary College. This annual event, coordinated by our Network Executive Officer, Adam Marchant, is attended by over 250 staff from local schools. Teaching Staff and Education Assistants have an opportunity to select a range of concurrent sessions throughout the day. An example of these includes; First Aid, Protective Behaviours, Adjusting the Curriculum, Data Analysis and Numeracy. Staff also have a valuable opportunity to network with staff from other schools. NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY & NUMERACY (NAPLAN) ONLINE

In Weeks 3 & 4, of Term 2, our students in Years 3 & 5 will take part in NAPLAN testing. This year they will be completing their NAPLAN testing online, with the exception of the Year 3 writing activity, this will still be done using pencil and paper. Students will be tested in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar & punctuation) and numeracy. NAPLAN Online will provide better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information. The assessments can run through a real-time internet connection or onscreen without an internet connection. NAPLAN Online features ‘tailored testing’ which gives students questions that are more suited to their ability – resulting in better assessment and more precise results. Please contact classroom teachers if you would like more information on these tests. Families should ensure that students are at school on time and that classes are not disrupted during NAPLAN Testing. Please follow the link below for further information and some example questions (public demonstration site).https://nap.edu.au/online-assessment Best wishes to all members of our school community for a safe and restful break. We look forward to seeing students back at school on Tuesday, 1 May.

YEAR 6 INDONESIAN COOKING LESSON

The Year 6 students in T11, T12 and T13 recently participated in an Indonesian cooking lesson. During the lesson, students learnt to make ‘Martabak Manis’ or ‘Terang Bulan’. They thoroughly enjoyed making the dessert with crumpets and Nutella, although they probably enjoyed eating them more! Some of the students had the privilege of having a second helping with some leftovers. During the lesson, students not only learnt the Indonesian Language but experienced Indonesian cuisine through taste testing. Cooking lessons are an important part of the Indonesian Languages Program at APS. Cooking encourages students to appreciate the Indonesian culture and provides them with instant insight into the diversity of

Indonesia and Indonesian cuisine.

LOW CARBON SCHOOLS RESEARCH - PARENT SURVEY

In 2016 and 2017, Aveley Primary School participated in the Low Carbon School’s Pilot Program (LCSPP) to reduce the school’s carbon footprint. Through the LCSPP, Aveley PS is also participating in some exciting research by PhD student

Portia Odell.

Portia is researching whether kids take the things they learn about carbon emissions back home to their parents/households and whether that influences any changes in behaviour. To measure this, she needs the help of parents/carers/guardians who

have children attending Aveley PS. All you need to do is fill out a short 10-minute survey.

To date, there is not much research in this area so your responses will help with some interesting and novel research. Your

responses will be greatly appreciated! The survey link is here: http://bit.ly/lcspp-parent

Thank you very much in advance!

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Well done to one of our students, Boston F! He and his baseball team have qualified for Nationals to be held in Lismore, NSW in June. Congratulations to him and the team on their hard work and skill and

we wish them every success for the tournament .

Firstly thank you to our 2018 P&C Committee for a successful term 1. Thank you also to all our volunteers who have helped out with our fundraising and canteen help throughout the term. Your time and help is appreciated. The P&C are also still on the hunt for one more valuable person to become our Secretary. This position is an essential part of our committee to help us continue running. If you have 2-3 hours a fortnight that you can spare to help us out please come along to our next meeting on Monday, 14 May at 6.30pm in the staffroom and put your hand up. New members are also always welcome.

SCHOOL BANKING

Our School Banking Coordinators, Helen and Kim, are running a colouring in competition for term 2. There are 5 prizes to be won of $10 to be deposit-ed into the winners accounts. The pictures can be collected at school banking or printed from our Face-book page.

FUNDRAISING

Although Term 1 is almost over we have one last fundraiser being Free Dress Day this Friday, 13 April. Children are welcome to wear free dress on this day for a gold coin donation, however enclosed footwear must be worn as some classes must still be able to participate in their sport class. Fundraise with Tea, our term 1 fundraiser was a great success selling over 300 bags of tea and raising over $900 for our school. In week 2 of term 2 we will hold our annual Mothers Day stall with gifts ranging in price from $1-6. We are currently looking for volunteers to help us out on Tuesday, 8 and Wednesday, 9 May. Volunteer forms are being sent home or you can contact Renee by messaging the Facebook page with the day and time of your availability. Whether it be for 1 hour or the whole day, any time you can spare is appreciated. Entertainment books are coming soon, however the digital copies are available for purchase now. SCHOOL CANTEEN

We would like to thank our canteen employees, Helen and Laura, for their hard work throughout the term. The ladies are always looking for volunteers on a Monday or Friday to help out. Whether it is the whole day or you have time after 12.30pm to be a runner and deliver lunches to classes they will be extremely grateful. The new 2018 winter menu will be attached and also loaded on the Facebook page. There are some delicious additions being Macaroni Cheese, Fried Rice (GF) and Hot Chicken rolls.
