Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Deputy Principal Matters by Nathan Lawler Getting back into a Routine We are now two weeks into our full return to school and we are entering a busy few weeks with students submitting assessment tasks, teachers marking responses, providing feedback to stu- dents and writing reports. When students are setting out their school day it is important that they build a routine which supports their learning and overall health. One strategy is for stu- dents to set out a time period each afternoon for homework and revision. A common question parents ask their child is do you have any homework?the usual response is no’. Don't be fooled. To get around this and to set up some healthy work practices, students might set aside a period of time each afternoon, which is work time’. Even if there is no homework, students can revise what they learnt earlier that day or work towards completing assignments. They might also use the allocated work timeto further research something they found interesting from class. Developing a healthy routine that allows time for learning, exercise, socialising and rest normally leads to increased productivity and healthier sleep patterns. Students in all years can start developing a positive routine. If anyone has any advice for sleep routines with toddlers please call me :) Temperature Tester – SRC helping out Our students have been doing the right thing and going through the temperature tester each morning. To keep this process as efficient as possible we have had our SRC students assisting by handing out coloured bands once stu- dents are passed. Students are now in a routine of walking through the Hall after arriving at school. We are review- ing this protocol and will be in contact soon. Students who are unwell Please continue to keep your children at home if showing signs of being unwell. If your child presents at school and is showing flu like symptoms or they have a high temperature - they will be guided towards the sickbay and a parent will be contacted. If you are unable to collect your child within an appropriate timeframe we will request that you arrange for someone else to pick them up. Getting back into a Routine We are now two weeks into our full return to school and we are entering a busy few weeks with students submitting assessment tasks, teachers marking responses, providing feedback to stu-dents and writing reports. When students are setting out their school day it is important that they build a routine which supports their learning and overall health. One strategy is for stu-dents to set out a time period each afternoon for homework and revision. A common question parents ask their child is ‘do you have any homework?’ the usual response is ‘no’. Don't be fooled. To get around this and to set up some healthy work practices, students might set aside a period of time each afternoon, which is ‘work time’. Even if there is no homework, students can revise what they learnt earlier that day or work towards completing assignments. They might also use the allocated ‘work time’ to further research something they found interesting from class. Developing a healthy routine that allows time for learning, exercise, socialising and rest normally leads to increased productivity and healthier sleep patterns. So how do we determine which students attend a high achiever morning tea? After every reporting period we hold high achiever’s morning teas to recognise and celebrate outstanding academic achievement. There are 3 high achiever morning teas; one for Year 12, one for Year 11 and a combined Years 7 to 10 event. For each of the Year 11 and Year 12 morning teas, around 20 students are invited. For the Year 7 to 10 morning tea, about 10 students from each year group are invited. Like the ATAR, students need to do well in all of their subjects to receive an invitation. An average is taken of all the rank positions and the lower this average the better a student has done across all of their subjects and the best are invited to morning tea. While the calculation of the ATAR is much more sophisticated and takes into account scaling factors for subjects, the Year 12 morning teas have been reasonably good at identifying students with strong ATARs. P&C Initiative Many thanks to our P&C body for organising a bottle of hand sanitiser for all students and staff. The P&C have funded it as part of the school-wide strategies to keep our children and staff safe. The bottles are reusable and should be re-filled from your home supplies. These handy bottles can be clipped to student bags, refilled and re-used. Any student who has not received their bottle should go to the School Office. Additional bottles can be pur-chased from the uniform shop. Building Update As you may know, an upgrade is underway at school to deliver a new multi-use sports centre. The school upgrade remains on-track for completion by the end of 2020. Work continues on the structure of the building, with the first floor concrete slab now poured and the steel structural framework being built. A time-lapse recording is being taken throughout the project. You can view the time-lapse video at https://youtu.be/NkYb8YUypjY. Bootcamp and Run Club Our regular weekly Bootcamp and Run Club fitness sessions have returned. Bootcamp provides students with an opportunity to build their strength, mobility and cardiovascular fitness. Sessions are designed for all fitness levels and we include exercises whereby students can go at their own pace. Additional cleaning protocols are taking place before and after each session. Mrs Frykberg ran our first run club session for the term on Tuesday. This is a great opportunity for students to run in a small supportive group. Participants take on a new 5km route each ses-sion. This again is tailored for all fitness levels. Mrs Frykberg can shorten the distances for those who are not as experienced. Run Club – Each Tuesday morning at 7:00am. Bootcamp – Each Friday morning at 7:30-8:30am (new time). Year 12 Year 11 and 12 students have received their half-yearly reports. Students in years 7-10 will receive reports later this term. For Year 12 parents we will be trialling a new format in place of the traditional face-to-face parent teacher evening. This new format will enable parents to book Zoom or telephone meetings with their child’s teachers if needing clarification on anything raised in their child’s school report. Our Year 12 students will also engage in coaching sessions next term. NESA has been closely monitoring the impact of COVID-19 on student progress in HSC courses and has determined a range of measures to try and alleviate some of the pressure students are un-der following their disrupted learning. Students have been made aware of these changes which include an extend-ed timeline for practical submissions and a later start date for the written HSC papers. Full details of the changes can be found on the NESA website via this link. Should you have any questions or concerns about any of these changes, please don’t hesitate to contact a Deputy Principal. Uniform This week has been much better with the large majority of students in correct school uniform. It is important stu-dents continue to come to school appropriately attired. Please remind your child that ‘hoodies’ are not part of the uniform. We find that students in full uniform are usually more focused on their learning throughout the day. Many thanks for your support on this.

Best Wishes Nathan Lawler Deputy Principal

YEAR 7 HISTORY

Our Year 7 History students have been learning about Ancient Egypt. Last week, Mr De Palo and Ms Ishkanian's Year 7 classes put their learning into practice with a fun mummification activity. Students used toilet paper to mummify their 'pharaoh' classmates. Students also created 'canopic jars' (jars for the safekeeping of Ancient Egyptian mummy's or-gans) out of water bottles to accompany their 'pharaoh' into the 'afterlife.'
