Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Deputy Principal Matters by Claire Cartwright Continued Covid vigilance required It continues to be important for students who are experiencing even mild cold or flu symptoms to stay home. These students are required to obtain a negative Covid test result before they return to school. This negative result should be emailed to the school office. Along this line, if a student is experiencing cold or flu symptoms at school, however mild, a parent or guardian is required to collect them. We request and appreciate your support with this matter. Reminder about vaping and e-cigarettes We continue to ask for parental assistance in helping to prevent their child from bringing vapes onto school grounds. These products are not legal for under 18s and should not be brought on to school premises. These vapes look like highlighter textas and come in bright colours to represent various flavours’. Students caught with vapes on school grounds will be subject to the school s discipline policy. Reminder about online safety Following on from our recent communications about distressing content on social media platforms, the Department of Education in association with the e-Safety Commissioner has offered the following advice to parents. The following advice for parents assists in limiting studentsexposure to harmful online content: Engage in your childs online activity and discuss the types of apps, websites and games they are viewing to ensure content is age-appropriate Make use of parental control on devices to help limit your childs online exposure Help your child report and block inappropriate content on social media or apps Encourage your child to talk to you about anything upsetting they view online Visit www.esafety.gov.au for further advice on apps, social media and online safety issues. Year 11 examinations Year 11 students have been engaged in their final examinations for their Preliminary courses since Wednesday last week. The last day of examinations is Monday, Week 10. These examinations are an important opportunity for year 11 students to hone their study, revision and examination skills ahead of starting their HSC courses next term. It is very important for students to take the time to reflect on the feedback provided by teachers, rather than the marks. Students need to respond to the feedback so they can continue to experience growth in subject specific skills. If stu- dents have further questions about how to improve, they should not hesitate to ask their teacher for further advice. Student Representative Council 2021 Next week the process of selecting student council representatives for 2021 will continue with junior speeches and year 11 panel presentations. Year 11 candidates have already uploaded their speeches onto a Google Classroom for peers and teachers to watch. The quality of the candidature is very high and the panel is looking forward to hear- ing from these students before selecting the final representatives. We are hoping to conclude the process and an- nounce the members of the 2021 SRC including Captains and Vice Captains by the end of next week. Toilet closures This week we have trialed locking bathrooms during break times. We have had a steady stream of students using a bathroom in the office during lesson time. Please remind your children that they should use the bathroom before school, at recess and during lunchtime so that their learning in class time is not disrupted by a need to use the bath- room. We need to maximise learning time in the classroom so students can work towards achieving their academic goals. Of course there are always times where students genuinely need to use the bathroom during class time. We will continue to allow those students to go. Canteen changes Our canteen is regularly audited against health food requirements for schools. To meet this standard, please note that our canteen will no longer sell any confectionery. TELL THEM FROM ME - STUDENT SURVEY During week 10 our school is taking part in the Tell Them From Me student survey. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them improve. The survey is completed on-line and is run by an independent research compa-ny, The Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys. Staff will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. To ensure confidentiality, participating stu-dents will receive a unique username and password. Where fewer than five students respond to a question, the results will be suppressed. The survey typically takes 30 minutes or less to complete and will be administered by the school during normal school hours. Once the surveys are completed by students, reports are prepared and in most cases are available to schools within three business days. This survey will help our school better understand how to improve student wellbeing and engagement. It will help the school identify what works to improve student outcomes. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of ques-tions in the survey can be skipped. If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please contact Mr Lawler via email.

OUR NATIVE BEEHIVE HAS ARRIVED On Monday our school received its rescue native beehive, kindly delivered to us by Ku Ring Gai Council. The base was put together by some year 12 and 10 students and Ku Ring Gai Council will be featuring St Ives High School in their an-nouncement on their website about SMART schools across NSW. Due to our commitment to native bees and our school gardens, the council will use St Ives HS as the flagship for other schools to become more environmentally aware. A large thank you is extended to the staff and students who strive to make these positive initia-tives happen. Lucas De Palo HSIE Teacher

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE – EVAN PANK (ex St Ives High Student!) Evan Pank is an artist living and working in Sydney, Australia. Utilising spray paint and screen printing, he creates works based on his own experiences as a football fan and the interconnection of sport with politics and society. Pank’s unique work explores parallels between political protest on the street and football fandom at games across Australia and the globe. His work depicts the organised chaos that is hidden in plain sight.

This year, Evan has facilitated workshops with Year 9 Street Art PBL, demonstrating drawing, stencilling and spray-painting techniques for students to learn and build upon artmaking techniques. Evan has worked alongside students in the creation of a mural inspired by Aus-tralian artist “Beastman” known for public murals that depict geomet-ric landscapes and life forms. Each student has contributed their own design, creating, cutting and spraying their own multi-layered stencils. The symbols and motifs seen on the mural represent flora and plant species found on the grounds of St Ives High School eg. Angophora, Old Man Banksia, Grevilleas and Eucalyptus. This creative collaboration has led to an exciting, rich and vibrant mural that has been installed outside our C block building! Check it out!

SIHS P&C have registered a Lifeblood TEAM with the Australian Red Cross.

Lifeblood TEAMS is about friendship, community

and a little competition.

At our last P&C meeting we unanimously voted to support the Red Cross and create a Lifeblood TEAM so if you’re a student 18+ years old, school staff, or a parent/carer join the SIHS P&C Lifeblood team and be part of something bigger than yourself. This is a unique opportunity for all of us to band together and give something more powerful than money.

Donated blood can be used to help people in all sorts of life-giving ways and the need is constant — it could be for a person fighting cancer or going through a difficult pregnancy, or they could be someone who relies on regular transfusions to stay healthy, or even, stay alive.

Our first TEAM donation

will be at the Chatswood Donor Centre

on Wednesday 23rd September at 2.15pm

To join the TEAM, email [email protected]

We’ll be organising future TEAM donations but …. if you’re a regular blood donor let the Red Cross know that you want to be part of the SIHS P&C TEAM. If you’ve been thinking about giving blood and would like moral support, join with a friend and save lives together.
