JOB DESCRIPTION: Deputy Principal (Director of Teaching & Learning)

UNITS: 7 Management Units (Permanent) 1 Senior Management Allowance (Permanent)

RESPONSIBLE TO: Principal Board of Trustees

RELATING TO: Principal Deputy Principal Management Staff Teaching Staff Support and Non-teaching Staff Students Parents and Caregivers

The two Deputy Principals will work closely with the Principal and Business Manager as part of the Senior Management and Leadership Team (SMLT) of Rongotai College.

It is envisaged that the Deputy Principals will rotate the School Operations and Student Management portfolios on a bi-annual basis.

On annual rotation, one of Deputy Principals will fulfil the role of Principal’s Proxy and will deputise when the Principal is absent and make decisions accordingly, within the framework of the policies of the college.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:

1. To be an effective teacher.

2. To be an informed and professional leader.

3. To ensure that all students are encouraged to learn and develop to their full potential.

4. To assist the Principal to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the college.

5. To take responsibility for the promotion and the development of the policies, philosophy and vision of the college as outlined by the Principal.

6. To discuss matters of policy with the Principal as part of the Senior Management and Leadership Team and initiate changes to policy and management of the school where appropriate and applicable.

7. To support, implement and review the school’s strategic and annual plans and goals.

8. To be a reflective practitioner and evaluate the effectiveness of areas of responsibility.

9. To foster positive relationships between the school and community.

FACTS The following are some facts about the college of interest:

Decile 6.

Currently, approx. 716 pupils with an annual intake at Year 9 of approximately 140-150

12 FTE international students in 2019.

Teaching staff of 49.

21 prefects at Year 13.

Rongotai College has an expansive 9.658ha site, with excellent facilities for a number of sports.

Modern, renovated classroom facilities, excellent equipment and up-to-date computer technology (approx. 1:2 students). New gymnasium opened in June 2013.

HISTORY Founded in 1928, Rongotai College celebrated its 90th Anniversary at Queens Birthday

Weekend 2018.

Initially a Year 7-13 school for boys, the intermediate division closed in 1964 to allow for the opening of Evans Bay Intermediate School.

We are enriched by a heritage of excellence and are rightly proud of the successes of our Old Boys in all fields.

Famous Old Boys are acknowledged around the school with profiles in the learning areas they would be associated with – for instance, Sam Morgan’s biography is located in the Commerce and Digital technology areas.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT and CURRICULUM With a roll of approx. 716, we are small enough to know the learning needs of each boy

well, but large enough to offer an extensive curriculum that meets the academic and vocational needs of all our students.

We offer a broad course for all students in the junior school enhances by a range of option choices. There is a greater specialisation from Year 11.

At Year 9, there are three streamed classes and three broad-banded classes based on the entrance test in November and assessment information provided by contributing schools. The average class size of Year 9 is 26 students per class.

NCEA is the assessment system offered at Rongotai College, with students having access to Achievement Standards and Unit Standards where appropriate.

Based on NCEA results, Rongotai College continues to improve, and is now achieving ahead of the local Decile 9 co-Educational school.

The school has had a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy since 2014, and students are encouraged to utilise the power of the campus-wide wi-fi in their learning. All classes utilise BYOD and Google docs, with the school providing for students who do not have a device.

PASTORAL CARE Vertical form classes mean that junior students develop close relationships with senior

students and quickly share in “The Rongotai Way”.

Form teachers and deans establish early contact with families of new entrants, creating a partnership between home and school which supports each boy’s development.

Regular meetings between deans, class teachers and senior managers maintain our pledge of ensuring that every student advances academically, socially and personally.

Career profiling and advising is undertaken by the Careers staff each year, starting in Year 9.

Our Non-Violence Policy and a firmly-enforced discipline system provide a solid framework by which we maintain a harmonious and safe environment for all.

The school is part of the school-wide Positive Behaviour for Learning Initiative, and is working towards embedding the processes of this initiative.

SPORTS AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES All pupils are encouraged to take part in co-curricular activities and there is a variety of

sports and cultural opportunities available.

Over 30 sports are offered at the college and students are engaged in cultural programme ranging from drama and public speaking to musical performance.

Over 80 per cent of our students play at least one sport for college teams, while most play two – or more!

Across the range of sports, Rongotai is competitive: o Strong athletics and cross-country programmes; we compete in McEvedy Shield

annually. o Basketball – Wellington Senior Champions and Top 4 in Junior competitions in 2018. o Floorball – Junior National Secondary School Champions 2018 and 2019, Seniors 2nd in

National Secondary School Championship 2018 and 2019. o Football – 1st XI regularly in Premier Youth League and competitive in lower grades.

Two time winners of the National Secondary Schools Championship. Football Academy in operation.

o Futsal – Senior and Junior Top 4 in NZSS Championship. o Hockey – Premier grade runners-up in 2018; Rankin Cup in 2019. o Rugby – traditionally strong 1st XV. 5th in Premier grade in 2018 and competitive in

lower grades. Recent ‘Old Boy’ All Blacks include Ma’a Nonu and Ardie & Julian Savea. o Softball – 2nd in National Secondary School Championship 2019. o Water Polo – 7 times National Champions. o New sports offered in recent years include Cycling and Rowing.

Choir and Barbershop performance groups, Jazz Band, Rock Bands and Chamber Music Group. Jazz Combo silver at NZSS Jazz Festival 2019.

Strong culture of debating and public speaking.

Polynesian Club and Kapa Haka regularly participate in festivals and competitions.

A musical is produced every two years (“The Wizard of Oz” to be performed in 2019) in collaboration with Wellington East Girls’ College and other local schools.
