Last week I was fortunate to be able to pop in to a number of the year 4 and 5 classes and was impressed with the focussed learning taking place! Congratulations to our student leaders and class representatives for their contribution to another moving ANZAC Day ceremony on Tuesday. Pride in ourselves, our uniform and our country is a really important characteristic to instil in our children and it is days such as ANZAC Day where we have an opportunity to remember those men, women and children who lost their lives defending our country that makes Australia the place it is today. Special thanks to those parents and students who made the effort to come along to the local Eumundi ceremony on Wednesday. Your presence really added value to the spirit and significance of the day. With the National Testing process just around the corner our year 3 and 5 students have commenced familiarising themselves with the test format and procedures. It is important that all children where possible complete these tests. Should you have any questions in relation to the NAPLAN testing please take the time to call the school to discuss any concerns prior to withdrawing your child. Prep Building At this stage our new prep class will be completed and ready for student use from Monday 30 April 2018. Information confirming this will be sent out to parents of students in Prep, Year 2 and Year 3 classes as soon as the school receives approval to access the site. Queensland students are invited to use their amazing coding skills to help Anti-Bully Girl and her cyber hero friends spread the word that it’s time to stand up to cyberbullies. The Premier’s Creating Queensland’s Future coding competition is now open to all Queensland students from Years 3 to 10. This year, students are encouraged to enter a game, app or other digital solution that can help students stand up to cyberbullies. Technology themed prizes will be awarded to the winner, runners-up, and team winners in each category. Entries close on 19 June, visit QGOV for details. We have a number of links to surveys later in this edition, so please take the time to complete these if they relate to you, as your feedback is important. PRINCIPAL REPORTDear Parent / Caregiver

It has been a very positive start to the term after the successof the Commonwealth Games and it was really pleasing to seethe children keen and eager to be back with their class matesand teachers. Last week I was fortunate to be able to pop in toa number of the year 4 and 5 classes and was impressed withthe focussed learning taking place!

AEDC Survey – Prep students

Between May and August this year, our school will be takingpart in the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC), whichis a nationwide census of early childhood development andhelps our school and community understand how children aredeveloping before they start school, what is being done well,and what can be improved. The AEDC is an AustralianGovernment initiative run by the Department of Education andTraining.

Vision Screening for Prep Students

We encourage parents of all students in the early years ofschool, particularly Prep, to have recent vision and hearingtests. It can sometimes be difficult to ascertain whether astudent is experiencing difficulty with their hearing or vision, andthe effect on their learning progress, social skills and confidencecan be significant. For this reason our school accepted aninvitation from Children's Health Queensland to conduct freevision screening here at our school for all Eumundi State SchoolPrep students.

A permission envelope with parental consent forms have beensent home with Prep students. The Queensland GovernmentChild Health Nurses will be here to begin screening from the5th June. To participate, please return your completed consentforms and envelope (please seal your envelope for privacy, theywill be returned to the Health Nurses) to Prep Teachers byFriday 4th May.

Community survey – enrolment choices for Prep

The cluster of State Schools in the Noosa and Hinterland areawould appreciate your thoughts and opinions regardingenrolment choices for Prep in our local schools.

NAPLAN Testing

This year NAPLAN testing for students in Years 3 and 5 willtake place on 15, 16 and 17 May. The NAPLAN tests aredesigned to assess the skills of Australian students in literacyand numeracy.

The specific purposes are:

All eligible students in Years 3, 5, 7 or Year 9 enrolled atState, Catholic or Independent schools must sit the tests unlessthey are exempt by the school or withdrawn by parents/carers.Parents considering withdrawal (an exemption of theirchildren) from one or more of the tests should contact theschool as soon as possible.

Information for parents about the tests is available on theNAPLAN website.

CURRICULUM UPDATEOur teachers have been extremely busy planning engaginglearning activities for Term Two. The following provides anoverview of the teaching and learning across all the year levelsfor the term.

Term Two in PREP

In Prep we are working on our Age Appropriate Pedagogiesto develop good oral communication and foster their naturalcuriosities across the curriculum.

English

Goal for the term: Students will use letters and words they knowin their writing.

Prep students are reading a Pamela Allen story book everyweek focusing on detailed retelling of the story and discussingany personal connections the children have to the story. Theyare also using the story of the week for sight word recognitionand to highlight reading strategies that they use to help withreading independently.

Maths

Goal for the term: Students will understand numbers 0-10.

Through an inquiry approach the children will be highly engagedin lots of hands-on games and activities that reinforce theirunderstandings of number, measurement and shapes, patternsand algebra. Using the inquiry approach, the students are givenlots of opportunities to effectively communicate their reasoningsand understandings.

Science

With a focus on 'Materials' this term, the students will sharetheir wonderings on the class 'Wonderings Wall' and as a classthey can find ways to answer the questions and record thesein their 'Inquiry Diaries'. In developing a good understanding ofmaterials their Under 8's Day activities will be a class initiativedeveloped from their experiments over the term.

HASS

This term HASS has a Geography focus where the childrenwill share their 'Special Place' with the class and describe itsfeatures and how they take care of it.

Term Two in Year 1

In English, Year 1 students are learning about words thatauthors use to describe characters and their actions andfeelings. They are also learning how poets use words to rhyme,entertain us and create images in our minds. Creating imagesand inferring are the reading comprehension strategies that willbe explicitly taught in Year 1.

Year 1 will be busy in Mathematics as they learn aboutrepresenting numbers to 50, growing patterns, positional anddirectional language, representing addition and subtraction,halves, duration of an hour, 2D and 3D shapes, addition andsubtraction thinking strategies, fractions and decimals, coins(counting, describing, sorting and comparing) and counting in10s.

2. To accommodate the assessment of studentsagainst national minimum standards.

The following outlines other aspects that will be covered by theYear 1 students:

In HASS, the children will be studying daily life in the Past.The children will be conducting some inquiry learning on twoimportant questions - What has stayed the same? What haschanged?

During Science, the children will be learning about living thingsand how their needs are met within their habitat. They will usetheir science knowledge to recommend changes to improvehabitats and care for the environment.

In Health, the students will be continuing with the You CanDo It program learning how to become Gabby Get Along,Oscar Organised, Ricky Resilient, Connie Confident and PetePersistent.

Term Two in Year 2

In English this term, Year 2 are learning that some storiesshow characters in different ways. They are learning how tocompare characters and write a persuasive response givingreasons why they prefer a particular story. To assist them to dothis, the reading comprehension strategies comparing, makingconnections and predicting will be taught.

Mathematics in Term Two will cover the following concepts:time- half past, o’clock, quarter to and quarter past; 2D and 3Dshapes; 2 digit numbers (number lines, place value, comparingnumbers, partitioning, addition and subtraction); sharing anddivision; solving simple multiplication problems; fractions ofshapes and collections (halves, quarters and eighths); money(addition and subtraction problems); area of shapes; calendars(days, months).

The students will also be busy covering a number of conceptsin other learning areas. In Science, the students will investigatethe effects of push and pull forces. HASS will look at Australiaand its neighbours. Health will cover safety in the classroomand the wider school environment and Art will explore colourand space using a range of mediums and techniques.

Term Two in Year 3

During English this term, Year 3 students will first be exploringnarrative texts. The students will develop their understanding ofnarrative structure and will use a range of language devices tomake their writing interesting, including descriptive vocabulary,action writing and similes. The students will then have a lookat how advertisements are constructed and apply theirunderstanding to create an advert poster of their own!

The Year 3 cohort will engage with numerous mathematicalconcepts in Term Two. Students will analyse and create gridmaps, explore fractions of collections, identify features of 3Dshapes, create words problems for unusual number sentences,apply mental computation strategies to add and subtract threedigit numbers and will begin to represent four digit numbers invarious ways.

Their days will also be filled with many other fun and interestingactivities, such as exploring the impact of the Sun on the Earth,applying ICT skills to create a dazzling PowerPoint presentationof their Aussie Outback Shack and they will identify how areasin our local area have changed over time. Lastly, let’s not forget

that the students will be going on an exciting excursion to theCaboolture Historical Village!

Term Two in Year 4

In English, Year 4 students are reading ‘The Twits’ by RoaldDahl and traditional tales by other cultures. They will beanalysing language features and will be writing their ownengaging narratives using modelled text structures. Inferring,predicting and visualising are the reading comprehensionstrategies that will be explicitly taught in Year 4.

In Mathematics, Year 4 students will be learning aboutrecognising, reading and representing five-digit numbers,solving problems using all four operations, identifying odd andeven numbers and their properties to help solve problems,counting and representing fractions on number lines andrepresenting fractions using a range of models. Students willbe reading and representing money amounts, includinginvestigating change and rounding to 5 cents, exploringproperties of polygons and quadrilaterals, identifying combinedshapes and different sized angles. They will investigate thefeatures on maps and plans and the language of location,direction and movement.

In Science this term, students will be exploring the propertiesof natural and processed materials with Mrs McWaters. TheYear 4 inquiry unit this term is based on managing waste.The cohort will be investigating how to manage waste withinthe school by collecting and representing data to implement awaste management solution for the school within our HASS,Mathematics and Technology curriculum areas.

Term Two in Year 4/5

In English this term, Year 4/5B will be studying persuasive text.They will be analysing language features and understanding thestructure of a persuasive essay.

4/5B will be engaging in a range of activities to increase theirfluency, understanding and application towards Maths.Throughout the term all of 4/5B will expand their knowledge of:

The Year 5 students of 4/5B will continue to move throughoutthe Year 5 cohort classes to participate in curriculum rotations.During this time, students will investigate the solar system,Australian society and emotional well-being.

Meanwhile, the Year 4s will dive into Geology and the effectsof weathering and erosion to the Earth’s surface through ourScience unit. Culture within Australia will be our focus for Healthand students will continue to explore the HASS unit of usingplaces sustainably.

Term Two in Year 5

In English, students are learning how to write a feature articleand create a multi-modal document to present a particularpoint of view. In Mathematics, students are expanding theirknowledge of number facts, symmetry, angles and data. Other

key learning areas will cover learning about the solar system,Australian society, ICT and emotional well-being. In amongst allthis, we will also be doing NAPLAN testing!

Term Two in Year 6

The focus for this term in Year 6 is to empower students'entrepreneurial skills. In this integrated unit, students will workcollaboratively to analyse supply and demand to identify an ideaand follow a business process which will then be showcased tothe Eumundi community later on in the term.

Year 6 have a busy schedule in Mathematics this term.Students will be exploring angles, integers, computationalstrategies, fractions, decimals, order of operations and theproperties of 3D shapes. In addition, students will also belearning the practical aspects of budgeting in relation to theEumundi Entrepreneurs day taking place later on in the term.

In English, Year 6 will be learning to write persuasively andwill be composing a business letter to Mr Connors about theirEumundi Entrepreneurs stall. Students will be composingbusiness portfolios in groups. Students will also be writing anewspaper report demonstrating bias and opinion.

MUSIC NotesOur school choir is poised to perform 2 lovely ANZAC Songs onour school commemoration parade Tuesday 24th April in thetown centre. All the students supported us with our well knownmedley rendition of World War 1 and 2 songs. With our winddown after the Commonwealth Games, there is a large range ofwonderful music performed that we will revisit in music lessons.

Year 3 to 6 Inter House Cross Country Changeof Date

Due to wet conditions, the Year Three to Six Inter-House CrossCountry has been postponed and will now be held in the Fridayof Week 2. It is currently scheduled for Friday 27 April. Studentsborn in 2010, 2009 and 2008 will participate in the middlesession between 11:30am and 12:50pm. Students born in2007 and 2006 will compete in the afternoon session from1:45pm onwards. 2018 Noosa District Cross Country Trials

The Noosa District Cross Country Trials will be held atNoosaville State School on Friday 11 May. All students bornin 2006, 2007 and 2008 who placed in the top six after ourInter House Cross Country event will be invited to attend thesedistrict trials.

2018 Sunshine Coast 11 YearsGirls Regional Netball Trials

Four Eumundi netball teams have begun thenew netball season, taking the courts atTewantin for their Round Robin gradinggames leading up to the start of competition.It is a great family atmosphere courtside and under the Eumundimarquee as we cheer our Eumundi players on. After viewingsome very classy netball from the Australian team in theCommonwealth Games recently we can look forward towatching our Eumundi players get on court and shine just asbrightly.

Congratulations to Brooke J who wasnamed as a shadow player after competingin the recent Sunshine Coast RegionalNetball trials held in Caloundra on 17-18April. Our very own Miss Jones (coach) and

Mrs Baker (manager) took the Noosa U11 netball squad to theregional championships where the team competed very well.

KARATE Champs

Year 6 student Damian M. competed at the Australian Openand Australasian Schools Age Championships over theweekend in Sydney.

He won a Silver Medal for Kumite (Sparring) Individual MaleUnder 12yrs and came 5th in the Kata Individual Male 10 and11 Yrs.

He was also been advised this week that he has been selected,for the 2nd year in a row, to the Queensland State Team.

Year 3 student Lachlan N has been selected by the QueenslandKarate Association and is now in the 2018 Queensland Karateteam. Lachlan will compete next month’s Invitational as normalbut this event is also compulsory for all Queensland Karateteam members. Lachlan will now have intense training inBrisbane every Saturday from June till August. Lachlan will thencompete in August at Nationals for Queensland! Nationals thisyear are nice and close to home at Caloundra. This is a bigachievement for Lachlan and he is very excited to have madethe team.

Athletics Trials for Year 3 – 6 students

Over the next few weeks all year 3 to 6 students will beparticipating in athletics trials during their weekly PE lessons.Additional trial time may be allocated outside of these lessonsfor any students who are absent during PE, if circumstancesallow.

The trials allow us to select students from each house to goin the Championship events during the Year 3 - 6 AthleticsCarnival, which will be held on Friday 22 June.

The situation for each event is as follows:-

*** Please note, that in long jump, high jump and shot put,there is a Team event on the Carnival day for those not inChampionship. These events have more points allocated tothem than Championships!

Prep to Year 2 Sports Day

The Prep to Year 2 Junior Sports Day will be held onThursday 14 June. All prep students, as well as any newstudents in year one or two will be allocated to a house groupover the next few weeks. The four sport house groups are:Banksia (green), Bunya (blue), Cedar (red) and Wattle (yellow).More information to come.

P&C NEWSThe first general meeting for the year was held in the Arthouse17th April. Exciting news, our Executive team has grown withthe election of Nat Brewster to the position of Vice President.

Student banking will be processed every Tuesday morning, sodeposit books need to be in at the Office by Monday to ensureit gets banked or get it to Carolyn at the tuckshop on Tuesdaymorning before 9am.

• 100m - everyone runs in the heats on Carnival day

• 200m - 2 students per age group from each houseare selected to go in Championship

• 800m - everyone is encouraged to run in theChampionship event is scheduled before the carnivalon Thursday 21 June.

• Long Jump - 3 students per age group from eachhouse are selected to go in Championship

• High Jump - 2 students per age group from eachhouse are selected to go in Championship

• Shot Put - 3 students per age group from eachhouse are selected to go in Championship

• Feedback being sought from school staff on bestutilisation of P&C funds for students.

• Uniform - the P&C are seeking samples of our schooluniform for community consultation. Previous stocksrequire replenishing and addressing some issuessuch as fading and pulling of our current schooluniform material is being addressed. Come along tothe next meeting to have your say on what our kidswill be wearing!

• An online survey will be developed to seekcommunity feedback on potential Eumundi SSFestival for 2018.

We will be making one change to the Term 2 menu. We will bereturning chicken burgers to an everyday menu item but theywill only be available in a hotdog roll for $4. The Tuesday Specialwill be BLT s.

FLEXISCHOOLS

Flexischools is a great way to order tuckshop. Just register onFlexischools.com.au and start ordering. No bags to write on, nocoins to find and no reason to even visit the tuckshop. Althoughwe do like people visiting us, especially if you are going tovolunteer. You can order in advance, modify the menu items asrequired, and even repeat the same orders each week. Onceyou start using the flexischool system you will love the simplicityof it.

UNIFORM SHOP

Don’t forget the uniform shop is open in the Café every morningfrom 8 to 10am. Orders can also be made over the flexischoolsystem. We will deliver the order to your child in their class assoon as the order comes in.

Chappy ChatWelcome to term 2! I’m really looking forward to this term andall the fun things that we have planned. Please keep an eyeout for your invite to our beautiful Mother’s Day Morning Teaand also coming up on the same day is our Mother’s Day Stall.I’ve had a quick peep through all the amazing gifts that we’vesourced and also some that have been hand made by ourwonderful mums from the Craft Collective, and I think you’regoing to love your gift.

This term we also start ‘Dragonfly’ girls group with the Year 5girls and information about this program will be coming homesoon. Please come and visit us at the Eumundi Markets on aWednesday were we will be selling our very popular and famousWorm Wizz!!! The students do such a great job at collectingthe product, setting up our stall and selling it to our customers.Chappy’s room is open during the breaks for students to comeand play lego, make some craft, play some games and it’s theperfect opportunity for the students to have a chat with me ifthey need any support or encouragement.

Rotary Noosa Daybreak’s Schools Competition has beenfinalised for 2018. The judging (by retired teachers, who still liketo keep their hand in teaching activities!) has taken place - theyhad a hard time selecting worthy winners!
