4 BSc Business Programmes

Our programmes The ideal course of study for your career ambitions

Common programme themes

Business Management SkillsThis theme incorporates core modules at all levels of study that develop general quantitative and qualitative skills related to business management. The theme encompasses an expansive range of modules aimed to develop research and analytical skills that both contribute to learning on other modules and are relatable to employers.

Business EconomicsThis theme is concerned with how business is shaped by the external environment and impacted by government. In particular, you will learn about the interface between business and the regulatory framework provided by government at national and international levels. As such, you will have the opportunity to study modules in economics and government.

Business NetworksThis theme is concerned with external stakeholders and focuses on the relationships firms develop with suppliers and customers. It encompasses modules that consider the role of the business in society.

Business Management and PeopleThis theme is centred on the internal context of the firm and stakeholders within the firm, ie, people. It includes modules that deal with leadership, people management, change management, crisis management and, most recently, corporate social responsibility.

CommunicationsCommunications is at the heart of business, its reputation and relationships with internal and external audiences. This theme allows students to understand and apply contemporary communications frameworks and campaigns to achieve business goals, with modules developed to meet professional standards and the needs of business today.

MarketingThis theme enables students to achieve an overview of marketing as a philosophy and as a business function. The modules included have been developed to reflect standards required across this sector and have been created with input from marketing firms.

EntrepreneurshipThis theme is focused on the entrepreneurial dimension of business, exploring the generation of business opportunities and entrepreneurship in the global business environment.

Accounting and FinanceThis theme deals with the financial management of business and ensures that students of the more general Business Management degree understand the rudimentary dimensions of financial management.

The following pages go into detail about each of our programmes, illustrating the wide range of modules available to students. There are a number of common themes running through all of our programmes that reflect the disciplines you will find in the real world of business.

BSc (Hons) International Business with Language

Your programme of studyo Your first year is a compulsory foundation

year, introducing you to key areas in the study of business.

o In your second and final years, you will have some choice within the themes structure of the programme.

o Your first and second years will comprise two-thirds of business studies and one-third of language study. In your fourth year, this changes to 80% business studies and 20% language study, although you can extend language study to 40%.

o You will spend your third year abroad, which is vital to the development of your language. An extended period spent abroad is the only way you can become truly fluent.

o Your year abroad is conditional upon you achieving the requisite grades and number of credits in your first and second year.

Why study at Birmingham Business School? This four-year programme combines modules from our successful BSc in Business Management with study of French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese or Chinese. You don’t need to have prior knowledge in business studies, but you will need an A level in the relevant language if you choose French, German, Italian or Spanish as they are offered at Advanced level only. If you choose Japanese or Chinese then GCSE in a modern foreign language will suffice as they are offered at Beginners level only.

Wherever in the world you hope your career takes you, there are enormous advantages in combining knowledge of modern business with the expressive power of a foreign language. This programme develops an understanding of business on a national and global scale, providing a firm foundation of skills and knowledge that will prepare you for a rewarding career in international business.

For details of the universities overseas that our students go to, or have been to, please visit www.birmingham.ac.uk/undergraduate/studyabroad/outgoingstudents/index.aspx.

You also have the opportunity to work in a company overseas during your year abroad.

Law with Business StudiesThere are many close connections between the law and modern business. Lawyers acting for commercial clients benefit from an understanding of organisations, how they are managed and the way they structure their activities. People in business benefit from a sound knowledge of the law, particularly those areas that affect industry and commerce.

This popular four-year programme provides a thorough grounding in the law and the discipline and constraints it imposes on business practice. The business element gives you a firm grounding in industrial economics, marketing, development, organisation and management systems, finance and accounting. You can choose from a selection of specialist modules including human resource management, change and quality management, brand management and entrepreneurship and enterprise.

For more information please visit: www.birmingham.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/law/law-business.aspx

Modern Languages with Business ManagementAdvanced study of one or two languages, alongside a grounding in international business, proves a very attractive proposition to employers. This flexible programme gives you the chance to study French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese or Mandarin Chinese alongside Business Management modules.

If you take a language as a beginner, your first year focuses entirely on practical language work. If you have an A level in the language, you’ll combine one language module with an optional module in politics, literature, culture or history. You can specialise in one language in your second and fourth years, or continue with two. Your third year is spent abroad, usually studying at a university, although it is possible to arrange an overseas work placement.

This leaflet was written several months in advance of the start of the academic year. It is intended to provide prospective students with a general picture of the programmes and courses offered by the School. Please note that not all programmes or all courses are offered every year. Also, because our research is constantly exploring new areas and directions of study some courses may be discontinued and new ones offered in their place.
