HOD’s Desk

It gives me an immense pleasure to congratulate students and faculty of Information Science & Engineering department for the publication of the 7th edition of the newsletter. Newsletter focus on various activities by the students and faculty in academic, co-curricular, extra-curricular as well as research. I believe that “one must find meaning in one’s daily work”. The best work happens when you know that it is not just a work, but something that will improve other people's lives. This principle drives each one of us at ISE department. I would like to thank all my colleagues for their efforts towards department growth.

CUTURAL SECTION Navaratri – 2018 India is a land of cultures and diversity. A land where people of different caste and culture unite together and celebrate it with joy and happiness. Navratri is a celebration of the feminine divine worshipped by Hindus. The festival is celebrated with much grandeur in different parts of the country, which lasts for 9 nights and 10 days. According to the Hindu calendar the festival falls in the month of Ashvin. Each day is devoted to different forms of Goddess Durga and is ascribed 9 different colours. The women fraternity, at ISE celebrated Navartri by wearing the respective colors on the nine days followed by Ayudha Pooja.

Music-defined networking Orchestrating traffic is a crucial component of operating a data network. Modern networks may interconnect thousands of servers, storage units or switches that in turn run tasks like device booting and configuration, anomaly and intrusion detection, monitoring and diagnostics. These tasks must be managed to keep the network operating smoothly. As these networks become increasingly complex, a Saint Louis University researcher turns to sound as a simpler alternative to manage complicated network tasks.

Music-defined networking is a model in which network functions can be programmed in response to specific sound sequences (music), coming from real or virtual devices. The researchers explored both active applications, where network devices were programmed to emit a certain sound, and passive applications, where sounds produced by devices e.g., datacenter fans, are monitored to identify when they may have failed. Using low-cost speakers, microphones and Raspberry Pi’s small affordable computers designed for users to learn programming, the team augmented existing network components with sound capabilities. Unlike light, sound is not high speed but instead travels slowly. So, rather than looking at sound as a means of sending lots of data around a network, looking at it for the network management tasks that happen, for example, in the physical space of the datacenter.

In both a real and virtual network test environment, the researchers explored how music could be used for several network tasks, including datacenter server fan failure detection, authentication, load balancing and congestion notification.

Sound has its limits – it’s noisy and doesn’t travel very far – but it’s almost completely underused right now. In addition to the human ear, machines can recognize a tune that serves as a signal. For instance, music can be used as a security system “doorbell” to warn that someone has accessed the network. Malicious intruders often operate by trying every single “door” of entry into a network to find a way in. It can be very difficult to prevent, or even detect, such attacks. Using sound, researchers can create a code so that every time someone enters a virtual door, a human operator or computer would hear a new pattern of music as a warning. Sound-based network management has potential as an effective and inexpensive network management technique for many applications.

DATA SCIENCE APPLICATIONS

We have come to an era where analyzing ,predicting and visualizing data has become the norm in data interpretation .There is an abundance of data in this world waiting to be accumulated ,processed and decoded. Data scientists across the world are using these zeta bytes of data to improve existing conventional systems. There are various fields benefitted by data science.

Page 13: DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING … · was carried out by Meghana Satyanarayan and Rishabh Jain from HappyMongo. Mrs. Fathima Afroz coordinated the event. Industrial

Social media: Social media is a vast area where data science methodologies are applied religiously. One such example can be the Facebook - Cambridge Analytica Data Scandal, where these companies harvested user data for political benefits .These companies collected data and used it to alter public opinions. The data was also bought by politicians to aid their political campaigns. Alternatively, consider YouTube it uses data to recommend videos and create automatic playlists. App based aggregators: Various food delivery apps and taxi apps use huge amount of user data to aid their marketing strategies. The taxi apps use surge pricing during peak hours to elevate profits. This is done by accumulating data of a particular area, interpreting the demand and quoting a surged price. Food app aggregators are no different, after a order is being placed the ML algorithms get in to work and takes numerous factors like restaurant efficiency and traffic conditions into consideration and assign a delivery partner. It also devices the best possible route for the driving partner to follow. Healthcare: The healthcare industry is hugely benefited from data science methodologies .In radiology the computer have been taught to identify pathologies from medical images for better understanding. Machine learning methodologies can be used as a diagnostic tool as well, it helps cutting down doctor’s intervention in the early stage of treatment which in turn reduces medical bills. In the diagnosis of cancer the progress and evolution of tumor can be analyzed and concluded whether its benign or malignant Over all we can say that data science techniques can be used to make a good/bad change in this world. The future is data driven, so buckle up and kick start a great career in DATA SCIENCE. Author: AmudhaSurabhi Sem: III A Soul search I want to run away, Somewhere far away. To face the uncertainty, And to conquer what is meant to be. To defeat the odds, And to be triumphant. Pushed by circumstances, I stand all alone. It is now left to me. To figure out, And to manage it all, What is truly meant for me? I have to strive a little, To revive from a lost battle,

To reach the heights, I have to bend a little. Obstacles are what I see, Like the perilous rocks , In the deep blue sea, I want to be the captain of the ship. Directing ,judging and leading , My inner instincts, To a newer beginning, And a happier ending. I realize that in life, tough times, Are always meant to be, Just another opportunity, For what we really want to be. Author: AmudhaSurabhi Sem: III A
