A Report on ISTE approved event for the Celebration of Ramanujan’s Birth Anniversary

VVP Engineering College affiliated to Gujarat Technological University, as usual keeping pace with time, has celebrated the birth anniversary of the great mathematician Shree Srinivas Ramanujan on 22nd Dec 2014. 22nd Dec is celebrated as the National Mathematics Day across the nation in the commemoration of Shree Srinivas Ramanujan.

V.V.P., established in 1996 and the first self-finance college in Saurashtra-Kutch region, is a premier institute in engineering area. It offers courses in different branches of engineering at Bachelor and Master level. It looks after the overall growth of the students as well as staff and for that frequently organizes various activities for student and staff development. This innovative activity of the celebration of Ramanujan’s Birth Anniversary was one of the parts of it.

Inauguration: The program was inaugurated by an eminent person and chief guest Shree Maulishbhai Ukani, the Director, Ban Labs, Rajkot along with the esteemed presence of Dr. Sameer Vaidya, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, S.U., Dr. Sachin Parikh, Principal, VVP Engineering College and all the staff members. Shree Maulishbhai Ukani has addressed the audiences sharing his ideas of Shree Ramanujan. Keeping in mind the struggling success of Shree Ramanujan, he said that in today’s era

the mantra of success has also changed. He strikingly pointed that this is the very right time to adopt the mantra ‘Do before you die’ instead of ‘do of die’. Dr. Sachin Parikh, the Principal also addressed the audience and shared glimpses from the life of Ramanujan and his contribution in the field of Science. Keeping in mind the difficulty of the subject like mathematics for common people, every effort has been made to make the event accessible to every one and therefore activities like a talk on Ramanujan, practice of Vedic Mathematics, visual presentation and quiz etc. have been organized. Expert Talk: After the inauguration session, expert talk on “Srinivasa Ramanujan: A Natural Genius” by Dr. Sameer Vaidya, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, S.U., has been organized. Dr. Sameer Vaidya showed what contribution Shree Ramanujan had made to science and India. He has also very lucidly depicted Ramanujan’s life and his creative personality.

Ramanujan Corner: Primarily the program was intended to spread awareness about the contribution of Shree Ramanujan in the field of mathematics and science. Hence, Apart from the lecture, a visual presentation named “Ramanujan Corner” has been organized. The corner was inaugurated by Honorable Shree Pravinbhai Maniyar, Chairman, VVP

Trust. The posters, photos, his research paper have all been prepared by the faculties of the Department of Humanities and Sciences. The Ramanujan corner was visual presentation on the life and works by and on him.

Video Repsentation: A video presentation has also been organized. The video presentation showed the videos on the life and works of Shree Ramanujan. A short movie on his life was also shown.

Quiz: For the basic check of the reasoning and mathematical skills of the faculties, a quiz also has been organized. The 30 mathematical MCQs have been set and large group of participants have attempted this. Assist. Prof. Jay Joshi, Mechanical Department, VVP Engineering College ahs been given prize for coming first in the quiz.

Vedic Mathematics: For the quick calculation and use of mathematics in daily life, Vedic mathematics is the sharpest weapon. Hence, a practice session on Vedic Mathematics has been organized wherein Asst. Prof. Aniruddhh Parmar, Department of Humanities and Sciences, VVP Engineering College delivered a lecture with practices.

Tree Plantation: At the end, as it has always remained tradition of VVP, trees have been planted by the guests.
