HistoryThe Department was established in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences in 1992. The first set of students for the maiden programme of the Department, the Bachelor of Technology (Honours) degree in Fine and Applied Arts, were admitted in the 1992/93 session. The M.A., M.Phil and PhD programmes were commenced in the 1996/97 session. The M.Tech., M.Phil and PhD programmes were commenced in 2002.

Mission and RelevanceThe Department is to serve as agency for artistic, cultural, technological and industrial development through research and modernization of indigenous art concepts and technology in relation to social, economic and cultural realities of the world; and to educate students with adequate academic background integrated with sufficient technological training necessary for the challenges of environmental development as well as management of cultural and industrial matters. Emphasis is placed on identification of problems and opportunities, innovation and invention; effective and efficient utilization of production resources; and self-reliance.

The objectives of the Department are: Establishing effective facilities for studies in Fine and Applied Arts.

Undertaking research in the various branches of Fine and Applied Arts.

Nurturing an awareness of the richness of African culture vis-a-vis the global dimensions of art, as well as developing skills in the invention and manufacturing of locally sourced art materials and equipment.

Training artists for skills to undertake practice professionally and to undertake the study of cultural, historical, scientific, technological and industrial problems and evolve solutions through art and its theoretical techniques.

Giving instructions in Fine and Applied Arts to those who require it in some other programmes of study in the University.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMEBACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (B. TECH) DEGREE

IN FINE AND APPLIED ARTSPhilosophy The Visual Arts (pictorial and plastic) was originally conceived as being purely in the humanities and to train the individual to acquire artistic skills in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Ceramic, Graphic Design and Textile Design. But the relationship which now exists between the visual arts and the sciences and technology as well as the constant cultural fluxes make it mandatory for Fine and Applied and Arts to be treated as an integral part of the whole cultural system. For the full potentials of the Visual Arts as a cultural catalyst to be realized, it should be taught to produce artists with sound artistic and technological skills so as to influence cultural development not only through the humanities but also through science and technology.Objectives The objectives of the programme are:

providing students with sound academic training in studio practice, theory and history of the arts through an integrated and comprehensive technological approach;

nurturing in the students, an awareness of the richness of African culture and the global dimensions of art; and

producing graduates, who will make necessary positive impacts as artists and designers, instructors of art, art critics and historians, for institutions dealing with cultural matters and the society at large.
