On behalf of the Social Work Department faculty and staff, I, Mr. Orlando P. Milton, Jr., am delighted to wel- come Social Work majors to the fall 2016 semester. The idea of working on this degree may have some of you very excited, others worried, or perhaps some of you petrified. Whatever feelings you possess are your feelings, but know this, you chose this achievable jour- ney, so let’s get it started. For some, this is a new beginning and for others you’re a step closer to com- pleting your undergraduate academic career. Whatever phase you’re in just know that each member of your social work faculty and staff is devoted to providing high quality academic advising, career planning, mentoring, nurtur- ing, and coaching to ensure your academic success. Taking a new step in life is something to which I look forward. However, some- thing of that magnitude requires a certain mind set. I’m referring to a mindset that embodies desire, determination, and dedication. Many correlate school with learning and learning with school, but it goes beyond that. Learning is more than opening a textbook, researching information, or memorizing material to re- gurgitate back to your professor. I believe learning is the ability to genuinely lis- ten to your peers, willingness to work with others, being in tune with news that affects the world, and having the courage to explore the “unknown.” In other words, do not limit yourself, because learning is limitless. As you begin this se- mester, it is important for you to remember that this is a race that allows you many learning opportunities, and we look forward to working with you as you take full advantage of each. With that being said, keep in mind; this race is a marathon, not a sprint. This race takes time and, if done well, will help you suc- ceed throughout life. Now, in the words of Nelson Mandela, A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination. WELCOME! Welcome 2016-2017 Social Work Majors! On behalf of the Social Work Department faculty and staff, I, Mr. Orlando P. Milton, Jr., am delighted to wel-come Social Work majors to the fall 2016 semester. The idea of working on this degree may have some of you very excited, others worried, or perhaps some of you petrified. Whatever feelings you possess are your feelings, but know this, you chose this achievable jour-ney, so let’s get it started.

For some, this is a new beginning and for others you’re a step closer to com-pleting your undergraduate academic career. Whatever phase you’re in just know that each member of your social work faculty and staff is devoted to providing high quality academic advising, career planning, mentoring, nurtur-ing, and coaching to ensure your academic success.

Taking a new step in life is something to which I look forward. However, some-thing of that magnitude requires a certain mind set. I’m referring to a mindset that embodies desire, determination, and dedication. Many correlate school with learning and learning with school, but it goes beyond that. I believe learning is the ability to genuinely lis-ten to your peers, willingness to work with others, being in tune with news that affects the world, and having the courage to explore the “unknown.” In other words, do not limit yourself, because learning is limitless. 2016-2017 Social Work Seniors: Reaching Goals

Page 3 Volume 4, Issue 1

The 2016-2017 Senior Social Work class consists of more than 30 of the brightest students TSU has to offer. These ladies and gentlemen have worked hard for the last 2-4 years to reach their Block year and are excited about having met that goal.

Their field placements include a variety of agen-cies that include services to children, families, and the elderly, HIV/Hep-C, and substance use edu-cation and intervention, persons experiencing homelessness, and those seeking to leave domestic violence set-tings.
