For elucidation and quantification of economic theories, econometrics is a complement to theoretical development of Economics. There was always a need to have an independent department of econometrics & statistics to meet the needs of understanding economic issues. In Fall 2011, we started offering MPhil degree in Econometrics. Considering elevated demand, the department is now offering PhD degree in Econometrics since Fall 2014. Learning at PIDE will provide you an opportunity to earn a research degree in very dynamic field of Econometrics. The degrees offered at the department mainly focused on contemporary research of international standards. With highest proportion of PhD faculty who are experts in their fields; student will be studying with people whose work pushes forward the boundaries of their subject. Research at PIDE and the Department of Econometrics and Statistics is outward looking and collaborative. We actively encourage interdisciplinary research that cuts across traditional subject boundaries and explores the connections between them. PIDE has research collaborations with numerous bilateral and multi-lateral organizations such as the World Bank, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), IUCN, Asian Development Bank (ADB), International Labor Organization (ILO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and other domestic research organization. INTRODUCTION

NATURE AND SCOPE OF ECONOMETRICS

The discipline of Econometrics is the key to understanding and analysis of theories of economics and their constituent components. Over the years, this role has been fortified due to the active infusion of mathematical, statistical and computational methods in the subject matter of Economics. Econometrics is distinguished from statistical analysis more generally by its use of economic concepts and theories as basis for empirical investigation. The department offers internationally oriented, rigorous teaching and research environment. Our faculty has a strong background in Econometrics and Statistics and includes eminent econometricians including Dr. Asad Zaman and Dr. Abdul Qayyum. The Department of Econometrics and Statistics is currently offering PhD and MPhil program in Econometrics. The PhD program aims to focus on teaching and research in econometric theories, methodological and conceptual issues and relevant statistical methods applied to socially relevant issues. The MPhil Program is directed towards ambitious and excellent students who aim to develop themselves as independent researchers and experts in their fields. It offers well-balanced training in quantitative methods, economic theory and applied economics through exercises and seminars, to policy issue and empirical questions. The rigor of analysis, empirical validation of economic hypotheses and contributions to business, social sciences, finance and public policy has been the main pillars which strongly emphasize the need for this discipline. Students who will complete these programs will be prepared for careers in academic, national and international governmental organizations, or private business.

Econometrics is a set of mathematical and statistical tools used to analyze the economic data and theories. Econometric techniques are required to test the validity of various economic theories, to compare the rival economic models for an observed phenomenon, to analyze the results of different economic policies and to predict the future outcomes. Econometric techniques are applied extensively in many fields of natural and social sciences e.g. education, psychology, environment, transportation, engineering and medicine. Therefore, the demand for econometric skills is very high. The students of Econometrics at PIDE have been able to secure their jobs in reputed organizations of Pakistan including SDPI, Riphah International University, Bahria University, Lahore College for Women University, IBA Sukkur and COMSATS.

To provide theoretical knowledge: these included basic econometric theory, applied econometrics, time series analysis, financial econometrics, panel econometrics, micro econometrics, Bayesian econometrics, Non parametric and semi parametric econometrics.

Ø To teach application of theories; there is an emphasis on the application of econometrics and statistics, through exercises and seminars, to policy issue and empirical questions.

Ø To provide skills to use Econometrics and Statistical packages.Ø To provide awareness about the different national and international sources of data.
