4.3 Research Activity in Centres (ITS, FAWB, MAPPS, CWSC) ITS (Institute of Transport Studies) The research activities of ITS (Monash) continued to grow in 2011 as evidenced by the 26 tier-one international journal and conference papers being published during the year and the attraction of over $1,000,000 in research funds. ITS (Monash) has increased its role in multi-disciplinary sustainability-related research. It has been involved in research covering areas of traffic safety, public transport use, sustainable transport, freeway operations, freight performance, motorbike travel and bicycle travel. Reflecting the growth in the research activities, ITS (Monash) has continued to attract a large number of students to its research program. Further details about the Institute can be found at its website at: http://www.eng.monash.edu.au/civil/research/centres/its/ Centre for Water Sensitive Cities (CWSC) The Centre for Water Sensitive Cities was established to transform cities and communities to help them live in harmony with natural water environments, enhancing resilience to current and future challenges. In December 2011, CRC for WSC won $30 million cash + $30 million in-kind from the Commonwealth.

RESEARCH

Civil Engineering – 2011 Annual Report Page 23 of 62

The Centre delivered on its Cities programs with outputs comprising many journal papers and industry reports, e.g. Living Melbourne, Living Victoria (Science, Policy, People - State of the Environment Reporting); Blueprint 2011; a Streetmap / Roadmap for National Validation with the University of NSW and Australian Water Recycling Centre; ULDA with the QLD Government; and Prof Deletic’s consultation with the National Recycled Water Regulators Forum. International Engagement included 17 papers at the 12th International Conference on Urban Drainage (ICUD), Brazil; Prof Deletic’s role in 11th International Conference, Computing & Control for the Water Industry (CCWI) and G’Day USA’s Water Forum in Los Angeles; also her keynotes in Britain, Canada, Serbia, India and Israel. The latter’s first biofilter (via CWSC & Jewish National Fund / Keren Kayemeth Lelsrael) was reported in Jerusalem Post. The Centre hosted The Flood Resilience Group from The Netherlands, as well as other guests from countries that included France, Denmark, UK, Israel and USA. Activities in Australia included presentations with Melbourne Water, Clearwater, CSIRO, Engineers Australia, Jewish National Fund, Go8 Engineering Climate Challenges Initiative, Fresh Minds (for HDR students) and hosting guests from interstate universities. Prof Deletic gave keynotes at The National Water Recycling & Reuse Technology Conference in Melbourne and at Smarter Water, Parks and Leisure of WA, in Perth. Monash Civil Engineers of CWSC presented at several Cities as Water Supply Catchment events (Blueprint Launch & Industry Partner / Research / Implementation / Envisioning workshops) in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. Further details about the Centre can be found at: http://www.watersensitivecities.org.au/ Monash Pipes Research (Critical Pipes Project) In 2011, Monash Civil Engineering Staff expanded their research activities into on-shore and off-shore pipelines. In particular, a $16m dollar ($4m cash) collaborative research project was started in August to develop technologies for condition assessment and failure prediction of critical water pipes. This project was a partnership between seven local water utilities (Sydney Water, Melbourne Water, Water Corporation, City West Water, South East Water, Hunter Water, South Australia Water) and two major international partners (Water Research Foundation and UK Water Industry and Research). The research is led by Monash Civil Engineering (A/Prof Jayantha Kodikara as Research Director), along with The University of Newcastle and the University of Technology Sydney. The group has developed a unique test bed (“Sydney Water Test Bed”) in Sydney using a decommissioned 1.5 km long 600mm cast iron pipeline to test new technologies, corrosion and pipe/soil stress/strain measurements under traffic, water and environmental loads. Main research activities of the group include the development of failure prediction methods for old deteriorated pipelines, study of climate effects on pipelines, the use of optical fibres to produce early warnings for pipeline failures, axial walking, and upheaval buckling and fatigue failure of offshore pipelines. The Monash Research Group includes A/Prof Kodikara (Technical Director), Prof Xiao-Ling Zhao, Prof Wing Kong Chiu, Dr Rajeev Pathmanathan, Dr Robert Dilan, Dr Asadul Haque, Mr Senthilkumar, Mr Suranji, Mr Derek Chan, Mr Kenneth Lim and Mr Phil Stevens (Project Manager).
