We are pleased to announce thatthe 2005 D.O. Shah Annual Lecturerin Surface Science will be ProfessorDarsh Wasan, Motorola ChairProfessor of Chemical Engineeringand Vice President for InternationalAffairs at the Illinois Institute ofTechnology in Chicago, Illinois.Professor Wasan received a bache-lor's degree in chemical engineeringfrom the University of Illinois atUrbana-Champaign and a Ph.D. in

chemical engineering from the University of California atBerkeley. He has spent his entire professional career at IllinoisInstitute of Technology, where he has served as chairman of thechemical engineering department, dean of engineering, vice pres-ident for research and technology, and provost and vice presi-dent for academic affairs. He has directed the research of 53Ph.D. students, 59 M.S. students and 15 postdoctoral fellows.

Professor Wasan's research interests are in the area of dispersionscience and engineering, including foams, emulsions and particledispersions, wetting and spreading of nanofluids on solid sur-faces, detergency, and interfacial and film rheology. He is anauthor of over 375 research publications and co-author of a text-book on Interfacial Transport Processes and Rheology, and 6 U.S.patents. He awards and honors include the ACS Colloid andSurface Chemistry award, the Langmuir Lectureship Award, theAIChE Thomas Baron Award in Fluid-Particle Systems, the ASEEChemical Engineering Division Lectureship Award, the WesternElectric Fund Award, and twice the National Science Foundation"Special Creativity Award." He also serves as editor-in-chief ofthe Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. Professor Wasanwas elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 2004for his 'pioneering research, inspirational teaching and noveltechnology developments in colloidal processing and interfacialrheology.'

The D.O. Shah Annual Lecture in SurfaceScience was established in the ChemicalEngineering Department at the Universityof Florida by Professor Dinesh Shahbecause of his strong commitment to theuniversity and the field of surface science.Professor Shah recently retired from theUniversity of Florida after a distinguishedacademic career spanning 35 years.

Dinesh O. Shah received his B.S. in Physics and Mathematicsfrom University of Bombay, India in 1959 and Ph.D. inBiophysics from Columbia University in 1965. He joinedUniversity of Florida in 1970 with a joint appointment in theChemical Engineering Department and in the AnesthesiologyDepartment. He was appointed as the Director of the Center forSurface Science & Engineering in 1984. He served as the chair ofthe Chemical Engineering department at the University ofFlorida from 1987-1991. Dr. Shah has received numerous teach-ing, research and service awards, including the UF Excellence inTeaching award in 1972, the UF President's Scholar Award in1975, the UF Outstanding Service Award in 1976, the UFTeacher/Scholar of the Year award from 1984-85, and the UFPresident's Medallion for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarshipin 1985. In addition, Dr. Shah was named the Florida Scientist ofthe Year in 1988, received the Vishwa Gurjari 1992 InternationalAward for Outstanding Achievement, and received the Pride ofIndia Award in July 1993. In 1993 he was named as theDistinguished Florida Scientist by the Florida Academy ofSciences and in 1996 he was honored with the first Charles A.Stoke Professorship at the University of Florida.
