Dr. Mark Gstohl ‘Comparative Religion’ Students Engaged... ‘Service-Learning’ thru his Residency at “A Studio In the Woods”
“Dr. Gstohl’s ‘Comparative Religion’ classes engaged in service-learning through his residency at “A Studio in the Woods.” The residency, "Flint and Steel: Cross-disciplinary Combustion," was designed for artists to join forces with invested academic partners. Each selected artist has been paired with a Tulane or Xavier University faculty member to inspire each other in the development of new work, to excite the public, and to fuel social change.
Jacqueline Ehle Inglefield (Louisiana, 2016) and Mark Gstohl (Xavier, Theology) built a shrine to the bottomland hardwood forest to reignite a reverence for nature. Referencing religious scriptures and past spiritual practices, the shrine encourages contemplation of the global impact of habitual consumption and waste and how our spiritual relationship with the natural world may influence our individual acts and determine our collective impact on our environment.
Dr. Gstohl’s students created handouts and posters explaining how various religions approach environmental issues. They presented their research at A Studio in the Woods’ Forestival on Saturday, November 12th from 11-2pm. The shrine was also on display in Xavier’s Art Village on Thursday, November 17th with presentations from 6-7pm.”

“I think that I shall never see/A poem lovely as a tree.”
—Joyce Kilmer, Trees, 1913
“Lovely as a Tree” is named after the opening verse of Joyce Kilmer’s poem
“Trees”, among the most famous lines in American poetry. Written in 1913, Kilmer
exalts the beauty of the tree’s natural form and proclaims the impossibility
of mankind to create a work of art that could ever be of equivalence. Yet artists
throughout the centuries have never lost admiration for the tree, finding unlimited
inspiration in its various possible interpretations despite its great familiarity.
Approximately 25% of all living plant species are trees. Found in great diversity, there
are an estimated 100,000 species worldwide. Of these, 132 tree species are commonly
found in Louisiana, according to the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center.
This exhibition presents an international selection of artists who investigate the
familiar form of the tree from a variety of new and sometimes surprising perspectives: Ron Bechet (New Orleans);
Dawn DeDeaux (New Orleans); Beth Galston (Carlisle, MA); John Grade (Seattle); Insun Kim (Brewster, NY); Beth Moon
(New York City); Eirik Solheim (Norway); Steve Tobin (Bucks County, PN); and Bartholomäus Traubeck (Austria).
Representing a wide range of media and styles, their artwork invites us to look at trees anew and to be reminded not only
of the grandeur of their form but also the significant role that trees play in sustaining life and renewing the human spirit.”
