Robert Smith, III, from Dallas, Texas, received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University in 1961. He is a graduate of the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University, and he attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, completing studies in National and International Security. Mr. Smith was employed by the Federal Reserve Bank in 1968 and worked in the Research, Loan, and Bank Services departments prior to his promotion to Public Information Officer and Assistant Secretary of the Board in 1971. He was promoted to Assistant Vice President and Secretary in 1974 and to Senior Vice President and Secretary in 1987. From 1973-74, he served as Secretary to the Conference of Presidents and the Conference of First Vice Presidents of the Federal Reserve System and was Assistant Secretary to those Conferences during the 1972-73 period. In 1975, as a special assignment, he served as Assistant Secretary of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C. In 1987, he was assigned responsibility for the activities of the Bank’s Houston and Gulf Coast Region. He has had numerous special assignments in coordinating Federal Reserve System and Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas responsibilities. RADM Smith’s University contributions and accomplishments began in 1961 in the Corp of Cadets, and he has continued to contribute and serve the University by serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of Texas A&M University, Galveston beginning on April 18, 2011. His civic contributions are many. He served on the Board of Directors, Houston World Affairs Council; Government Advisory Committee, Greater Houston Partnership; Board of Directors, Pearl Harbor Memorial, Honolulu, HI; Board of Directors; The Veteran’s Museum Houston, Texas and many other prestigious advisory boards and associations.

His military career began in 1962 as a Commissioned Ensign, and he was promoted to Rear Admiral (upper half) in 1991. His assignments took him throughout the U.S. and to Japan, Germany, and Europe. In 1996, after 35 years of service to the United States Navy, he retired. Among various unit commendations and service awards throughout his military career he also received the following:

The Department of Agricultural Economics at Texas A&M University has been aggressive in offering high-impact educational experiences to our students this year. The two high-impact initiatives are the honors and student research programs offered to qualified, academically talented, and highly motivated students. Our honors program is one of three programs available in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Several students are currently working with faculty on honors research studies, and an honors introductory Agricultural Economics class will be offered Fall 2011. We are promoting inquiry-based learning, independent research, and discovery. Honors students have an opportunity to work closely with the renowned faculty in the Department of Agricultural Economics. The Honors program offers students an effective entry into a fruitful and rewarding professional career through participation in innovative co-curricular and leadership activities. It’s time for you to excel!

Timm Honor Registry of Former Students in Agricultural Economics was established in 1997 to recognize and honor those graduates who have distinguished themselves in meritorious ways by reaching a significant level of accomplishment in their chosen field. Agricultural Economics Former Faculty Endowed Scholarship

The scholarship was funded in grateful recognition of the generosity of former faculty of Agricultural Economics and of the Texas Extension Education Foundation. This scholarship was established for deserving students in the Department of Agricultural Economics who have cumulative GPR of 2.75 or above among other criteria. Scholarship in Agribusiness Entrepreneurship This scholarship, created in 2002, was established by a former student of our Department, Berry Summerour, and his wife, Jennifer. Berry was an Agricultural Economics major who graduated in 1989. His wife, Jennifer, graduated from Texas A&M University in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. This scholarship was created to recognize students in the Department of Agricultural Economics with an interest in entrepreneurship. Applicants must be enrolled full-time, and must maintain a 2.75 GPR or greater, among other criteria.

C. E. Bowles Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was endowed in 1967 by the Texas Federation of Cooperatives (now the Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council) in memory of Mr. C. E. Bowles, who was widely known in agricultural circles throughout the Southwest. The scholarship is awarded to Agricultural Economics students at Texas A&M University based on academic merit and demonstrated financial need. Mr. Bowles left his mark on Texas agricultural and farm cooperatives as a farmer, county extension agricultural agent, district agent, and extension specialist. He also served as Vice President of the Houston Bank for Cooperatives and Secretary of the Plains Cotton Cooperative Association. Mr. Bowles passed away February 8, 1967. Applicants must demonstrate leadership potential and financial need, and must have a minimum GPR of 2.75. Preference is given to applicants with a demonstrated interest in cooperatives.

Chad Hunter Johnson ‘86 Opportunity Scholarship Chad Hunter Johnson „86 has established the Chad Hunter Johnson Opportunity Scholarship through the Texas A&M Foundation. This scholarship is provided to students in good standing pursuing a degree in the Department of Agricultural Economics, with particular focus on the option of finance, insurance, and real estate. The student must have graduated high school from a rural community in Texas and must demonstrate financial need. Mr. Johnson graduated with a degree in political science from Texas A&M University and is currently employed at Johnson Development Corporation, a Houston based residential and commercial land development company that his father founded in 1975. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute, the Greater Houston Builders Association, the Houston Development Council and is a Texas real estate broker.

COADC Betty S. Raun Endowed Scholarship in

Agricultural Economics Mrs. Betty Raun, a long time supporter of the Department, and mother of Texas A&M former students Lowell G. “LG” Raun, Jr. „76 and Tim Raun „84, and Laura Raun Carroll and Mary Raun Johnson, established the Betty Raun Endowed Scholarship. The endowment rewards students from Wharton County (or counties in that vicinity) for exemplary performance in the Department.

This scholarship was created in 1999 by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Development Council, matching the Former Agricultural Economics Faculty Endowed Scholarship contributions. The distributions from this endowment are used to provide one or more scholarships to students in good academic standing, pursuing a degree from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and majoring in Agribusiness or Agricultural Economics. CoBank Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1994 by CoBank - National Bank for Cooperatives. Texas A&M University was one of five universities selected to be a part of CoBank’s formal college relations program. The scholarship is annually funded by CoBank under the leadership of Doug Wilhelm ‘71. The scholarship is awarded to a recipient who demonstrates an interest and aptitude in cooperatives or finance. Applicants must have a minimum overall GPR of 3.00.

Award Scholarship This scholarship was established in October 2007 and was created by Dr. Ernest E. Davis ‘71 and his wife Marilyn on the occasion of Dr. Davis’ retirement from the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. Distributions from this endowment will be used to provide one or more scholarships to full-time undergraduate students in good standing pursuing a degree in the Department of Agricultural Economics within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University. Recipients are selected on the basis of classification as a sophomore, junior, or senior in good academic standing and must demonstrate financial need while being gainfully employed during the scholarship year.

Dr. William E. Black Scholarship

in Agricultural Economics This scholarship was created in 2001 by a former faculty member, Dr. William Black, and his wife, Olive. Dr. Black worked as a professor and extension economist in the Department of Agricultural Economics for 18 years. He retired in 1985 and passed away in 2001. Prior to his contributions at Texas A&M University, he served his country in the Army during both World War II and the Vietnam Conflict. This scholarship was created to recognize students with outstanding leadership potential. Applicants must have a minimum GPR of 2.50, and must demonstrate leadership potential and financial need.

Friends of Tommie Stuart Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1978 as a memorial scholarship in memory of Tommie Stuart, a former student of the Department of Agricultural Economics. He received bachelor’s degrees in both Agricultural Economics and Animal Husbandry from Texas A&M University in 1965. Applicants must have a minimum GPR of 2.75, and must demonstrate financial need.

This scholarship was established in 1988 to acknowledge students with academic excellence, leadership, participation in student activities and organizations, and strong traits of moral character. In 1999, the Kellers bestowed a generous gift to Texas A&M University, which was designated for use as scholarships in the Department of Agricultural Economics. Applicants must be an Agricultural Economics major, must maintain at least a 2.5 GPR, and must demonstrate financial need. This scholarship was created in 1997 by Gary DuBrock to honor his mother, Mimi, and his stepfather, Louis “Doss” Buntin. In Gary‟s letter to create the scholarship, he writes, “For what it is worth, there are very few things in my life that compare to the joy this gives me. I wish I could adequately express how much Texas A&M University meant to “Doss” and also how much he and my mother meant to each other. I can‟t think of a more appropriate way to honor them than with this gift.” Mr. Buntin graduated from Texas A&M University in 1939 with a bachelor‟s degree in Agriculture. Applicants must have a minimum GPR of 3.00, and must have graduated from a New Mexico High School, must have been born in New Mexico, or must have graduated from Plainview High School in Plainview, Texas, among other criteria.

Lowell Raun Memorial Book Scholarship

The Lowell Raun family of El Campo provides this scholarship in honor of “Big Lowell” who passed away in 2001. Mr. Raun was a class of 1950 graduate in Business Administration, a big Aggie fan, and a rice farmer in the El Campo area. Mrs. Betty Raun and her children Lowell Jr. „76, Tim „84, Laura, Mary and their families are long-time supporters of Texas A&M University and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Marsha Pyle Martin ‘70 Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This endowment was created in 2001 as a memorial to Marsha Pyle Martin by her husband and children. Marsha was a Sociology major who graduated in 1970. Applicants must have a minimum 2.75 GPR, must be a Senior majoring in Agricultural Economics or Agribusiness, and must demonstrate financial need, among other criteria. Producers Grain Corporation Educational Trust Fund/Zerle Carpenter Cooperative Endowed

Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1998 by the Producers Grain Corporation. Tommy Engelke, Executive Vice President of the Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council, and Ed Smith, Chair of Cooperatives in the Department of Agricultural Economics, used the funds to establish this scholarship in honor of Zerle Carpenter’s many years of leadership with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service (now the Texas AgriLife Extension Service). Applicants must have a minimum GPR of 2.75 and must be majoring in Agricultural Economics or Agribusiness in the Department of Agricultural Economics. They must also have completed AGEC 413 (Agricultural Cooperatives) or the class may be taken during the year the scholarship is awarded.

Stephen C. Helbing, Sr. ‘48 Endowed Scholarship in Agricultural Economics

This scholarship was established in December 2006 and was created by Stephen C. Helbing, Jr., Scott C. Helbing, Ross C. Helbing, and Robert L. Helbing as a tribute to their father, Stephen C. Helbing, Sr. ‘48, on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. Distributions from this endowment will be used to provide one or more scholarships to full-time students in good standing pursuing a degree from the Department of Agricultural Economics in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, and financial need. Additional selection preferences are: resident of West Texas, and/or member of the Corps of Cadets.

This scholarship was created in 1969. It was established by the Texas Bankers Association to reward an excellent student interested in banking as a career. Triangle Companies Scholarship

This scholarship was established in the Department of Agricultural Economics in 2005. Prior to that time, it was historically administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This scholarship is primarily the result of the relationship between Triangle Companies and Dr. John Park, with the intentions of not only helping with the development of the Department of Agricultural Economics and its students, but also to improve the relationship of Triangle Companies with its customer base. Applicants must have a cumulative GPR of 3.0 or higher, and must be an Agricultural Economics or Agribusiness major. They must have completed AGEC 413 or the class may be taken during the year the scholarship is awarded. Evaluation is based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, and demonstrated contribution to the cooperative industry, among other criteria.

This scholarship, established by the generous donations of Verlin and Howard Kruse ‘52, was created in 2002 to recognize students with an outstanding record in extracurricular activities and proven academic excellence. Howard Kruse ‘52 was a Dairy Science major who graduated from Texas A&M University in 1952. Applicants must have and maintain a 3.0 GPR, and must be majoring in Agricultural Economics, among other criteria.

This scholarship was established in 1981 by American Rice, Inc. to honor William M. Lehrer for his contributions to the rice industry. J. Wheeler Barger Memorial Award Outstanding Senior

This fund was established as a tribute to the fine character and many accomplishments of Mr. J. Wheeler Barger and is evidence of the respect and affection in which his memory is held by all who knew him. It is also an expression of appreciation for his leadership in the field of Agricultural Economics and Sociology, and for the inspiration, counsel, and assistance he so freely gave to so many of his students and co-workers during his lifetime. J. Wheeler Barger began his career at Texas A&M University in 1935. This award is a small measure of the love held for him by the thousands of men privileged to attend his classes or to be associated with him during his career at Texas A&M University. The purpose of this trust is to recognize, reward, and encourage students studying in the fields of Agricultural Economics and Sociology. Recipients must demonstrate superior academic performance, leadership, character, personality, and participation in activities and organizations, in addition to demonstrated ability to speak before an audience or to write for publication. These funds are used each year to provide a small monetary award to recipient(s) of the Department’s Outstanding Senior Award.

Tyrus R. Timm Graduating Senior Award This award was established in 1976. The purpose of this award is to perpetuate the name and high ideals of Dr. Tyrus R. Timm within the profession and to honor a graduating senior each year who has exhibited determination to excel in the field of agricultural economics. Academic performance, while important, is not necessarily the most important factor in the selection process. Eligibility and qualifications include: must be a graduating senior in agricultural economics; must have completed at least four semesters in residence at Texas A&M University; must be of high moral character; must have participated in a visible way in the activities of departmental clubs, as well as the affairs of the College of Agriculture and in the University community.

Caleb Boardman is the son of Russell and Lesley Boardman of Frannie, Wyoming. He is a junior Agribusiness major. He is a member of the Ag Econ Society and Saddle and Sirloin student organizations. He is a member of the 2011 Senior Livestock Judging Team and works at the Texas A&M Sheep and Goat Center. Caleb wants to receive his Master’s degree in Agribusiness from Texas A&M University and then enter into an agricultural lending career.

Wilson Alarcon is the son of Consuelo Guzman and Hugo Alarcon of San Antonio, Texas. He is a senior Agricultural Economics major with an emphasis in Policy and Economic Analysis. Wilson has served as an officer in both the Ag Econ Society and FIRE clubs. He is also involved in the Economics Society, Memorial Student Center, and works as a tutor for student athletes. Wilson wants to pursue a career in international economic development and intends to receive a Master’s degree in International Affairs.

Holly Allen is the daughter of Randy and Angela Sandlin of Gladewater, Texas. She is a freshman Agribusiness major. She is involved in the Residence Hall Association (RHA), is a member of her Hall Council, and volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club as well as her church’s nursery. She wants to open her own small company and work in accounting and management.

William Allen is the son of Will and Kim Allen of Dalhart, Texas. He is a freshman Agricultural Economics major—Rural Entrepreneurship option. He is a member of the Ag Econ Society and AGGIE ACES in the Department. He is also involved in Alpha Gamma Rho, Duolos Bible Study, and Impact. He plans to eventually return to the Panhandle and run a vertically integrated farming operation.

Ramiro Cabrera is the son of Maria and Ramiro Cabrera of Austin, Texas. He is a freshman Agribusiness major. He is a member of the TAMU-UNICEF Chapter organization and is involved with the fundraising committee, raising funds towards chapter operation and funds for awareness of the hardships that developing countries and children go through. He wants to acquire his Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness and successfully own his own business.

Ryan Fortenberry is the son of Philip and Judy Fortenberry of Bulverde, Texas. He is a sophomore Agribusiness major. He is a member of the Ag Econ Society. He is also a member of the Texas A&M Archery Team. He wants to pursue professional archery if possible, or would like to go into ranch management.

Jenna Haby is the daughter of Francis and Cheri Haby of Castroville, Texas. She is a senior Agricultural Economics major emphasizing in Finance and Real Estate. She is the Historian of the FIRE Club. She is also involved in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Jenna wants to obtain her real estate license and work for an agricultural bank.

Dillon Garr is the son of Dennis and Sheryl Garr of Springdale, Arkansas. He is a freshman Agricultural Economics major—Policy and Economic Analysis option. He is a member of the Aggie REPS organization for the Department. He is also involved in the Texas A&M Intercollegiate Wool Judging Team, Texas A&M Emerging Leaders, and Texas A&M Saddle & Sirloin. He wants to obtain his graduate degree and someday obtain a career in agricultural policy.

Melannie Charles is the daughter of Melvin and Amy Charles of The Woodlands, Texas. She is a junior Agribusiness major and is also working towards a minor in Communications. She currently serves as the Vice President of Public Relations for the Mays Premier Business Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi. She eventually wants to become a marketing director or public relations manager.

Kayla Hamer is the daughter of Cary Hamer and Lisa Jordan of San Antonio, Texas. She is a junior Agricultural Economics major with an emphasis in Policy and Economic Analysis. She is involved in the Aggie Honor Council, a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, holds a leadership position on the Collegiate Panhellenic Council, and works part time in the Office of the Provost. She plans to graduate in May 2012 with a degree in Agricultural Economics, a minor in economics, and a teaching certification for social studies grades 8-12. She plans to enter graduate school in the College of Education and Human Development in the Summer of 2012 to pursue a Masters of Education Degree. She would also like to own her own business.


John “Wesley” Hoelscher is the son of John and Debbie Hoelscher of Floresville, Texas. He is a senior Agricultural Economics major—Finance and Real Estate option. He is a member of the A&M Beef Cattle Risers Association and Caring Aggies R Protecting Over Our Lives (CARPOOL). He also works at the West Campus Library (WCL) computer lab part time. His hobbies involve hunting, fishing, ranching, and trading stocks. He plans to obtain a career in financial planning or investment banking when he graduates from Texas A&M this August.

Douglas Junkins is the son of Kamme O of College Station, Texas. He is a sophomore Agribusiness major. He is currently an economic researcher employed the Agribusiness Food and Consumer Economic Research Center at Texas A&M University. He is the treasurer of Crocker Hall, a member of the Mixed Martial Arts and Self Defense Club, and a former Texas A&M football player. He wants to receive his Masters of Business Administration after obtaining experience in the work force.

Whitney Hinze is the daughter of Ronnie and Maggie Hinze of Round Top, Texas. She is a sophomore Agribusiness major. She is a member of the Ag Econ Society and the Aggie REPS for the Department. She is involved in Fish Camp, Aggie Career Team, Terry Foundation Student Organization, and participates as a mentor for Freshman Leadership Experience. She is still considering several master’s degree options for the future.

Konni Kelso is the daughter of Kurt and Stepheny Kelso and Rhonda and Kenny Dracoulis from Seguin, Texas. She is a sophomore Agribusiness major. She is a member of the Saddle and Sirloin Club, Terry Foundation, Aggie REPS, and Freshman Leadership Experience. Konni represented Texas A&M as a member of the 2010-2011 Wool Judging Team. In addition, Konni is a research student for Dr. Ariun Ishdorj. She submitted her research project for the Student Research Week and received top undergraduate honors in her session. Konni plans to pursue a law degree in an effort to work in the political arena addressing issues dealing with agricultural policy.

Blaire Kisel is the daughter of Paul and Shelly Kisel of Denison, Texas. She is a sophomore Agribusiness and Poultry Science double major. She is involved in Fish Camp, Aggies Giving Selflessly (AGS), and Sophomores Advancing In Leadership (SAIL). After completing her Bachelor's degree, Blair plans to work in the poultry industry.


Terry Louie is the son of Toy and Ann Louie of San Antonio, Texas. He is a senior Agricultural Economics major—Finance and Real Estate option. He is a member of the NAMA and FIRE organizations for the Department. He is also involved in Habitat for Humanity, serves as the MSC Director of Assessment and Finance, and works at Aggie Station apartment complex. He wants to enter into the financial services industry upon graduation.

Karley Kosub is the daughter of David and Nancy Kosub of La Vernia, Texas. She is a sophomore Agricultural Economics major with an emphasis in Food Marketing Systems. She is a member of the Ag Econ Society, National Agri-Marketing Association, and the Aggie REPS organizations for the Department. She is also involved in the Alpha Zeta Honors Fraternity and the Freshmen Leadership Experience (FLE). She wants to attend graduate school to further her education and pursue a career in the food industry.

Glen “Tyler” Kusak is the son of Glen and Sherri Kusak of Yoakum, Texas. He is a junior Agricultural Economics major—Food Marketing Systems option. He is a member of the Aggie REPS organization for the Department. He is also involved in Aggie Special Olympic Texas Volunteers (ASOTV) and works at Rosenthal Meat Lab on campus. He wants to graduate from Texas A&M with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics, a Certificate in Meat Science, and a Certificate in International Trade and Agriculture. After graduation, Tyler hopes to acquire a job in the meat industry, preferably in sales. After gaining industry experience and if the opportunity arises, he will move back to Yoakum and help run the family business, Yoakum Packing Co.

Alyssa Looney is the daughter of Robin and Floyd Looney of Denton, Texas. She is a junior Agribusiness major with minors in German and Economics. She is involved in Saddle and Sirloin, Alpha Zeta, Beef Cattle Association, the Texas Junior Red Angus Association, and the Red Angus Association of America Junior Board of Directors. She wants to get her MBA in international business or attend law school.

Emily Lord is the daughter of Steven and Missy Lord of Red Oak, Texas. She is a junior Agricultural Economics major emphasizing in Policy and Economic Analysis. She has been a member of the Ag Econ Society. She is also involved in Student Senate, COALS Council, the Department of Agricultural Economics Academic Bowl Team and has worked for the Agribusiness, Food, and Consumer Economic Research Center in Texas AgriLife Research. She is currently participating in the ANRP Internship Program in Austin and plans to attend law school or obtain her Master's degree in the agricultural industry.


Lauren Madden is the daughter of Keith and Carol Madden of Inez, Texas. She is a junior Agricultural Economics major emphasizing in Finance and Real Estate. She is a member of FIRE club. She is also involved in volunteering for various organizations, such as the Big Event and the Brazos Animal Shelter. She plans to graduate from Texas A&M with her Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics in the spring of 2012, earn a Texas real estate license, and explore a career in commercial real estate.

Garrett Mink is the daughter of Brian and Ramona Mink of Scurry, Texas. She is a sophomore Agribusiness major. She is also involved in the Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association and currently works at Southern Jewlz in College Station. She wants to pursue a career in the marketing field.

Jessica D. Martini is the daughter of Beverly and James Holman and Roy and Linda Martini of Corpus Christi, Texas. She is a senior Agricultural Economics major with an emphasis in Policy and Economic Analysis and a Certificate in International Trade and Agriculture. Jessica has been active within the Agricultural Economics Society, previously serving as both president and secretary. She currently serves as the National President of the Student Section for the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association. Jessica is on the Academic Quiz Bowl team and works in the Agricultural Economics Undergraduate Office as a student technician and a teaching assistant. She is currently interning in Washington, DC, through the ANRP Internship Program for Congressman Kevin Brady of the 8th District of Texas. Upon graduation in December 2011, Jessica plans to attend graduate school to pursue her career interests of becoming an agribusiness analyst and professor.

Sarah Novak is the daughter of Charles and Julie Novak of Pleasanton, Texas. She is a senior Agricultural Economics major—Policy and Economic Analysis option, with a minor in business, and a Certificate in International Trade and Agriculture (CITA). She is currently the President of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Student Council and is the Coordinator for the Aggie REPS. Sarah is also involved with Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta, and serves on the Worship Team at St. Mary's Catholic Church. In addition, she has been a student technician for the AGEC Department, working as a teaching assistant, since 2008. Two of her favorite experiences at Texas A&M include: participating in an agricultural study abroad summer trip to France and being a congressional intern for the 81st Legislative Session in Austin, working with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. Sarah has aspirations of receiving her Master's degree and obtaining a career related to agricultural policy or finance.

Claire Luensmann is the daughter of Mark and Terri Luensmann of La Vernia, Texas. She is a junior Agricultural Economics major—Policy and Economic Analysis option. She is a member of AGGIE ACES and Aggie REPS for the Department. She is also involved in the Texas A&M University Wool Judging Team, Alpha Zeta Honors Fraternity, Saddle and Sirloin Club, Pre Law Society, and Freshman Leadership Experience. She is currently participating in an undergraduate research project, analyzing the relationship between stock market development and economic growth in developing countries. She hopes to attend graduate school and continue her education in Agricultural Economics.


Tiffany Jaye Schmidt is the daughter of Delmer Schmidt of Bulverde, Texas. She is a junior Agribusiness major. She is a member of the National Agri-Marketing Association and Aggie REPS. After she receives her Bachelor’s degree, she wants to pursue a career in the agribusiness field.

Christina Sawicki is the daughter of Nita Sawicki of Eustace, Texas. She is a senior Agricultural Economics major—Finance and Real Estate option. She is a member of the Ag Econ Society, NAMA, and FIRE clubs for the Department. She is also involved in Aggie Sisters for Christ, David Gardner’s Jewelers Student Advisory Council, and works at the A&M Outlet while serving as supervisor for tent sales. She wants to pursue a career in personal finance or banking after graduation.

Joyce Ramirez is the daughter of Arturo and Sylvia Ramirez of Mission, Texas. She is a freshman Agribusiness major. She is a member of AGGIE ACES for the Department. She is also involved in the Student Conference on National Affairs and the Regents’ Scholars Organization and Regents Encouraging Prospective Students (REPS). Joyce loves to spend her time with horses and reading books. She wants to receive her Master’s degree from Texas A&M and pursue a future in international business and trade.

Matt Okeson is the son of David and Kathy Okeson of Kingwood, Texas. He is a senior Agribusiness major and will graduate in May with a minor in Spanish, a Certificate in International Business, and a Certificate in International Trade and Agriculture. His involvement in the Department includes working as a teaching and grading assistant and participating on the FDRS Case Study, Academic Bowl, and NAMA Marketing teams. Matt has served as President of the Agricultural Economics Society, as National President of the Student Section of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, and in the TAMU Student Government Association. He is also a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity and numerous honor societies. Matt plans to pursue a graduate degree and a career in consulting after graduation.

Jake Riley is the son of Brian and Denise Riley of Friendswood, Texas. He is a sophomore Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics double major and will graduate with a Certificate in International Business and a Certificate in International Trade and Agriculture. His involvement in the Department includes being a member of Ag Econ Society, AGGIE ACES, and Aggie REPS. In addition, Jake is a member of the Academic Quiz Bowl team. Jake is currently serving as the Noble Ruler for Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Off-Campus Senator of the Student Senate, and was recently elected as a COALS Student Senator. He is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Eta Sigma, and Gamma Sigma Delta honors societies. Jake also serves as a Junior Committeemen with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and is currently employed as a student technician in the Department of Agricultural Economics. Jake will be studying in Angers, France, this summer as part of the France Agribusiness Study Abroad Program and plans to pursue either further education or employment upon graduation.


Allison Stein is the daughter of Dr. Larry ‘83 & Barbara Stein of Castroville, Texas. She is a senior Agricultural Economics major—Finance and Real Estate option. She is a member of the Ag Econ Society and is also the secretary of the Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate Society. She works as an official for intramurals and is involved in Big Event and Relay for Life. She wants to become a financial advisor and help others as so many have helped her along the way. While also enjoying sports and a love for the outdoors, Allison hopes to keep her drive and determination high in order to succeed in beginning her career with Planto Roe as a financial advisor.

Wesley Tobola is the son of Robert and Marie Tobola of Hallettsville, Texas. He is a senior Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics double major and will graduate in May with a Certificate in International Trade and Agriculture and a Certificate in International Business. He is a member of the Ag Econ Society, a student presenter for the NAMA Student Marketing Team, and a participant of the FDRS Student Marketing Competition for the department. Wesley is also involved in the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, served as CREW Chair for Fish Camp, and works for the Department of Agricultural Economics in the Undergraduate Office. After graduation, Wesley plans to gain experience in a career related to student affairs and pursue a graduate degree in student affairs administration.

Haley Wendler is the daughter of Jason and Sandy Wendler of College Station, Texas. She is a senior Agribusiness major graduating in May with a minor in Agricultural Economics. She is also receiving a Certificate in International Trade and Agriculture. Haley is a member of the Aggie REPS and has competed on both the NAMA and FDRS Marketing Teams. She is a mentor for the Helping One Student To Succeed (HOSTS) Program at Mary Branch Elementary School. Haley has worked for Meat Science in the Department of Animal Science throughout the past four years. In the fall, she will be attending Purdue University pursuing a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics.


Joanna Wilde is the daughter of John and Betty Jo Wilde of Wall, Texas. She is a junior Agricultural Economics major with an emphasis in Policy and Economic Analysis. She is a member of the Ag Econ Society. She is also involved in Aggie Recruitment Committee, Student Government Association, and Catholic Students Association. She wants to receive her Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics and pursue a career in agricultural policy. She will be working this summer in Washington, D.C. as an intern for Congressmen Rubén Hinojosa through the Agricultural and Natural Resources Policy Internship Program.

Morgann Zimmer is the daughter of Kimberli Hoffman of Victoria, Texas. She is a junior Agribusiness major. She is a member of Ag Econ Society, NAMA, and FIRE. She wants to graduate from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness. She plans on working in the financial or insurance industry and hopes to own her own business in the future.

The Aggie REPS enjoyed a wonderful year in 2010-11. As representatives of the Department

of Agricultural Economics, the REPS foster communication between faculty, staff, current

students, and future students. We hope to have another strong year next year and invite

door prizes and

scholarships were given

to students.

Over 250 pounds of food

was collected for the Brazos

Valley Food Bank during

our Annual Halloween

Trick-or-Treat Food Drive.

The purpose of the Ag Econ Society is to

This year over 15,000 Aggies came together in the name of service to lend a helping hand in our community. We are proud to say we were able to be a part of such a noble cause.

This year our organization hosted the Annual Networking Dinner at the Association of Former Students. This was a fantastic event where members had the opportunity to network with industry professionals and get to know faculty members.

MARKETING TEAM: Members compete with over 30 universities in a national marketing competition every spring.LOCAL COMMUNITY: NAMA is currently involved with Lemonade Day, which introduces Entrepreneurship to kids in the community.

GUEST SPEAKERS: NAMA invites speakers from the surrounding community to share their innovative marketing strategies at our monthly meetings. These speakers offer some great networking opportunities!
