Commissions mission is to “…promote Michigan’s West Coast as the premier venue for
hosting a diverse level of youth and amateur sporting events, enhancing the economy and
quality of life in the region.” Many of the events the Commission sponsors occur in Grand
Rapids and may have ties to GRCC. For example the old Kent River Bank Run they sponsor is
run by the former GRCC track coach. The Commission provides a network for the GRCC’s
Athletic Department to make connections with leaders from many different levels of

offering internships to as many as two students per semester.
Grand Valley State University- The department of Movement Science at Grand Valley
State University has formed a relationship with GRCC Athletic Department in order to
provide internships for their students. During winter semester 2013 GRCCC’s Athletic
Department had a student intern from Grand Valley which worked directly with the

cities events. Another key relationship Grand Rapids has with GRCC is for the revenue home
athletic competitions bring into the city. Many friends and family members travel into
Grand Rapids for home athletic events providing extra consumers to the area. Just this year
GRCC hosted over 95 athletic events drawing individuals into Grand Rapids.
Spectrum Health System- Required pre-season physicals are performed by the team
physicians whom operate out of the Spectrum Health System. Also, if at any point the
Athletic Trainer needs to make a referral it will be within the Spectrum Health System.

Evaluation Questions [Address each question for every program within the department]
1. Is the purpose/mission statement for the department/program(s) current and relevant?
Yes the mission statement for the athletic department is current and relevant. It is very important that the athletic department continue to strive for excellence in “…[developing] student athletes as citizens, students, and athletes”. As a prominent department for GRCC we build public visibility, foster institutional pride, and provide a connection with alumni and community.
2. Does the program design and structure reflect external standards and best practices? Please explain.
The Athletic Department’s program design and structure does reflect best
practices which can be evidenced by the success experienced at GRCC compared to
our pears in the MCCAA. GRCC has won the Charlie Chanter All-Sports Trophy 13
times; second to Lansing Community College which has earned the award 14 times.
This award signifies which Michigan Community College Athletic Department is the
most successful.
When looking at external standards in the MCCAA GRCC does fall short in the
number of athletic programs offered and overall spending. Over ½ of the community
colleges in Michigan offers Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, while GRCC does not.
The spending per student of our Athletic Department ranked 18th out of 19
schools in the MCCAA even though we are the second largest in the conference. The
graph below shows the institutions spending per full-time student.
Athletics Department & Program Review
KD ISIS 1/15/2013 19
On average GRCC spends $57 per Full-Time Student on athletics. The mean
spending by Michigan Community Colleges on Athletics is $293.28 per Full-Time
Student. GRCC spent 81% less per full-time student on athletics than the conference
average.
When looking at amount of money spent per student-athlete served by
department GRCC spends $3,701.98. GRCC spends about 37% less per student
athlete when compared to average MCCAA spending of $5,853 per student-athlete.

3. Do the Program Learning Outcomes reflect the demonstrable skills, knowledge, and
attitudes expected of students by the end of the program? Are the Program Learning
Outcomes clearly stated and measurable? Please explain.
Learning Outcome 1- Student-Athletes are expected to maintain a minimum
GPA of 2.0 and are reminded of this standard in the student-athlete handbook and
by coaching staff. This outcome is continuously monitored by running weekly
eligibility reports to ensure student-athletes are maintaining a 2.0 GPA. If a student-
athlete were to fall below a 2.0 they are ineligible to participate in any competitions.
Learning Outcome 2- Student-athletes are held to the Student handbook as well
as the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct which requires higher standards since
student-athletes serve as ambassadors to the institution. Coaches are continually
monitoring and enforcing Code of Conduct daily to ensure the development of
students as role models within the community.
Learning Outcome 3- Coaches and staff work with Academic Support Staff to
ensure student-athletes being successful in the classroom. The assistant athletic
director partners with the head of academic support to organize Student-Athlete
Study Tables available to all athletes. Some coaches organize additional Student-
Athlete Study Tables which are specific to their teams while others also require
student-athletes utilize the tutorial labs on campus and receive a report weekly on
hours students used these resources. The Athletic Department does require that all
Coaches offer their student-athletes study table times.
4. Are all four of the ILOs and associated competencies integrated into the program? Do
students have the opportunity to build the knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated
with the ILOs throughout the program? Please explain.
Communication- Especially for team sports communication is a key skill which
must be developed between teammates and coaches. Players must be able to
effectively express the next play or warn teammates about some change in playing
situation as well as be able to quickly listen and process commands. Communication
is such an essential part of athletics that it is emphasized each practice.
Critical Thinking- Gathering and synthesizing relevant information happens in a
split second in athletics. Players must at all times keep track of many variables
including: location of teammates, location of opponents, strengths/weaknesses of
opponents, location of the ball, location of themselves on the playing field, in
outdoor sports even wind direction and playing surface must be taken into account.
Athletics Department & Program Review
KD ISIS 1/15/2013 21
All of these factors are continuously changing and players must make decisions
rapidly to make plays, earn a point, and adjust game plans.
Social Responsibility- Student-athletes are provided with many opportunities to
interact with the community through camps, clinics, and tournaments hosted by the
teams. Many teams also engage in volunteer projects throughout the year.
Personal Responsibility- Student-athletes are held to set GPA in order to
participate so it is a goal of the Athletic Department to prepare students for the
classroom. Through the Study Tables students are exposed provided with tips and
advice to help them become independent learners. Balancing athletics and
academics places a lot of time constraints on student-athletes, therefore time
management is a pivotal skill that players must develop to be a collegiate athlete.
Also in order to play at peak levels student-athletes must be at peak physical,
mental, and emotional health. Coaches are continuously monitoring these areas to
address any concerns they have with their players and direct them to appropriate
resources.
5. Does the program prepare students for a constantly changing environment, and prepare
students to expect and manage change? Please explain.
In athletics the competition continuously changes and student-athletes must
make adjustments to their game plans for each team they face. Additionally athletes
are required to make snap judgments on the field of play all of the time. They must
be able to adjust to changes in external factors while simultaneously not allowing
the things out of their control dictate their level of focus and effort. Student-athletes
are repetitively asked to manage change while working in a group.

Faculty Development for Upcoming Year [Please identify any department specific faculty/staff professional development to which you would like those within the department to have access in the upcoming academic year.] Evaluation Questions
1. Is the professional development faculty/staff are receiving sufficient for them to
maintain currency in their field and area(s) of expertise?
The current level of professional development provided for coaches is below
standards to maintain currency in their field. Several coaches have expressed interest in
attending coaching seminars for their sport however there are no funds budgeted to
cover their expenses to go. Currently the little trainings staff members are attending are
paid for out of pocket, or for the 2 full time faculty on staff utilizing their C3 funds.
2. Are additional faculty/staff development resources needed to support the goals of the
department over the next four years?
If we could have about $2,000 per program for coaches to be able to attend national
meetings or trainings that would be sufficient to keep coaches up to date on current
trends in their sport.
3. Is the professional development faculty/staff are receiving sufficient for them to
maintain currency in their field and area(s) of expertise?

Evaluation Questions
1. To what extent are the targets for core department & program indicators (outcomes) being met? Are the various sub-populations meeting the targets at the same rate? Please address each outcome/indicator.
The individual programs are meeting core indicators/outcomes to a satisfactory level. Student-athletes are succeeding in the classroom and maintain the necessary 2.0 GPA to participate in athletics. They are earning individual as well as team awards and honors. And many student-athletes are transferring on to four year programs to continue playing.
On average the student-athletes cumulative GPAs were higher last year than those observed of all full-time GRCC students. The highest team GPAs from last academic year was from Women’s Tennis at a 3.31. The lowest team GPA last season was from Men’s Basketball with a 2.65.
Individual programs have done so well that they earned the department the All-Sports Trophy for the MCCAA. Several student-athletes have earned academic and athletic honors so far this season. Prior to the completion of the spring seasons GRCC student athletes had earned 32 individual honors ranging from Conference to National accomplishments.
Marketing out second year players to four year schools is a continuous process. Many coaches have already established relationships with local four year institutions where they will typically send students. The Softball team even hosts a community college showcase tournament which invites all four year coaches from Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio to come and take a look at the talent the MCCAA has to offer. At the completion of last academic year 39% of the student-athletes did end up transferring to continue their education. The team with the highest transfer rate is Baseball at 50% and the lowest is men’s tennis with 22.2%.
