GROWING TOMORROW’S LEADERS TODAY

Page 2: Denver Women of Distinction

Girl Scouts of Colorado Girl Scouts of Colorado is where girls throughout the state gain courage, confidence and character alongside a group of girls who will be their friends for life. It’s a safe place for girls to explore their world, develop an understanding and empathy for others, and take action to make the world a better place. Girl Scouts of Colorado is Colorado’s preeminent leadership organization dedicated solely to girls—all girls—where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them for the rest of their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.

Women of DistinctionThe annual Women of Distinction event is widely regarded as one of Denver’s premier philanthropic programs, bringing together and recognizing a group of purpose-driven leaders; women in business, healthcare, government and philanthropic communities who, like the girls, are dedicated to service and leadership. These women are nominated by their peers and commit to increasing the impact of Girl Scouting through their volunteer and financial contributions.

Since 1997, 368 leaders in their fields of expertise have been selected as Women of Distinction and have raised over $2 million to support Girl Scout leadership development programs. The 14th annual Women of Distinction event benefits the Girl Scout leadership experience. Previous honorees serve on the Women of Distinction Selection Committee to determine the nominees who best exemplify their commitment to girls’ issues, their professional accomplishments and their leadership in the community.

Christine BeneroPresident & CEO, Mile High United Way

As President and CEO of Mile High United Way, Christine is recognized throughout the greater Denver community as a leader in philanthropic service. In her career, she has twice become the first female CEO of an organization. Christine says the role of women in leadership positions is something she feels very strongly about, and she continues to work hard to help create an even playing field.

Christine has served on many boards of directors, including the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce Leadership Foundation, the National Civic League and the Women’s Foundation of Colorado. She is the past president of the Association of Junior Leagues International, past chairman for the Coalition for America’s Children and past chairman for Kiwanis International’s Young Children.

Christine grew up in Littleton, Colo. and was a Girl Scout. She was proud that her mother found time in the midst of her working schedule to be her troop’s leader. One of her prized possessions from her time as a Girl Scout is her Girl Scout sash.

The Honorable Joyce FosterSenator, District 35, Colorado State Senate

Before becoming a state senator for District 35, Joyce was District 4 Denver City Councilwoman for 10 years, serving as president from 2001–2002. She was the driving force behind the building of Denver’s Skate Park and establishing a program with Winter Park Ski Association and Denver Kids to enable at-risk children to learn to ski. She was co-founder of Transportation Solutions, South Colorado Boulevard Transportation Management Association and co-chair of the Southeast Corridor Mobility Coalition. Joyce was the former chairperson of the board for Jewish Family Service and on the board of directors for Citywide Banks and the Lowry Foundation.

Joyce’s passion is to find solutions to important problems. “We can’t just wring our hands. We need to roll up our sleeves and work to understand the problem.”

Joyce was a Girl Scout Brownie growing up in Benton Harbor, Mich. She fondly remembers her mother taking valuable time off from work to help her with her Girl Scout activities.

Marjorie GartCommunity Volunteer, Consultant

Marjorie is a consultant to nonprofit organizations, a community volunteer and philanthropist. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Rose Community Foundation, the Women’s Foundation of Colorado and the Vail Valley Foundation. Marjorie received the Charlotte B. Tucker Young Leadership Award from the Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado, and is a graduate of Leadership Denver. She has been an active volunteer with the Kent Denver School, The Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Lupus Foundation of Colorado.

Marjorie strongly believes in community involvement. “I am involved in a number of organizations that I feel make important contributions to the communities in which we live and work. Volunteering time and resources is an important way to be involved, as well as to mentor younger women.”

Growing up in New Jersey, Marjorie was a Girl Scout for four years, and she later became a troop leader.

The Honorable Judy H. MonteroCouncilwoman, District 9, Denver City Council

Judy grew up in Denver City Council’s District 9 and has spent the majority of her life living and working there. Judy has always worked in careers that support the social, emotional, physical, educational or political empowerment of individuals or families. She was instrumental in securing less polluting electric multi-unit car lines in District 9, which includes the heart of Denver and lower downtown. Judy also successfully brought forward a city council bill to start an urban farming greenhouse and retail market, which will also serve as an education center.

Judy’s greatest passion is simply to support her community as she works toward creating a quality life for families in Colorado. “I have been taught to always remember from where I came and that much is expected from those to whom much is given. I work hard every day to support my community and uphold the office that I represent.”

Her daughter, Hope, is a proud member of Troop 956, and Judy considers herself a grown-up Girl Scout.

She is also a clinical professor in dermatology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and teaches and mentors students and residents at the Veteran’s Hospital in Denver. Her main area of interest focuses on the use of dermatologic drugs during pregnancy and lactation, and how they can damage the unborn child. Barbara is the past president of the Women’s Dermatologic Society, the Denver Medical Society and the Colorado Dermatologic Society. She is the author of more than 25 publications and serves on the Health Committee at the Rose Community Foundation and the board of the Colorado Ballet.

Erin YoshimuraExecutive Director, Colorado Dragon Boat Festival

Erin is the executive director of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, the largest pan-Asian festival in Colorado. In addition to joining the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival she has her own company, called Empowerful Changes, where she trains and coaches people to take charge of their lives and careers.

Erin is passionate about cultural intelligence, diversity and inclusiveness, with a penchant for continued exploration and learning. She has served tirelessly as a mentor, advisor and role model, both in formal organizations and informal settings, encouraging young Asian Americans to find their voice and strengthen their personal identity. Her advice for others is “to constantly take time to define what success means to you because it will evolve and change over time.”

A Denver native, Erin was a Girl Scout while growing up in Arvada. Her memories of being a Girl Scout are mixed. She admits she was a terrible camper but was very proud of selling the most Girl Scout cookies in the area for three years in a row.

Forever Green

25

Tonight’s event spotlights Girl Scouts of Colorado’s exciting environmental initiative, called Forever Green. Girl Scouts have always been green, starting with our long-standing pledge to “use resources wisely.” Girl Scouts combine environmental education with community action to help put this pledge into action. As long-time advocates for the environment, this initiative brings Girl Scouts to the forefront of environmental sustainability, leading schools and communities in using resources wisely. Across the state, Girl Scouts are joining together, putting their plans into action and tracking their progress on our growing tree at gsforevergreen.org. Through environmental activities and partnerships, Girl Scouts explore Colorado ecosystems and wildlife, learning to value and protect them. Girl Scouts have an exponentially positive effect on the world.

Your support helps us continue to build girls who make the world a better place and take action for tomorrow.
