Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Press Conference – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos Opening comments: “Before we start just wanted to say, everyone knows the tragic stuff we dealt with yesterday, losing Tony York. This game was definitely for him. Getting to know the Yorks the last two years, the one thing that was so apparent to me about Tony, the times I’ve been around him, he was the biggest Niners fan out of any of them and really out of anyone I’ve been around since I’ve been in San Fran. Yeah, he is an owner, but just the true fan he was for the Niners always was so fun to watch. That’s what was so cool about him. For us to have a win today with what happened to him yesterday, it means a ton. I know it means a lot to the York family. He was a special person who will be missed a lot. Prayers are with all the Yorks today. Jed was able to come and we just had a special moment with him in the locker room. I know his parents weren’t and we’re there with them and I hope everyone’s prayers are for them. “The injuries today, [DB Tarvarius] T Moore, he had a stinger but he returned and [CB Ahkello] Witherspoon had an ankle, but he returned. Alright, go ahead.” When TE George Kittle is getting those kind of plays, are you just calling his number to take advantage of this or was it just happening naturally? “We always try to call Kittle’s number, but it depends what the coverages are. They played a ton of man coverage and he definitely beat the guy who was covering him. [QB] Nick [Mullens] made some good throws that got him some good yards after the catch. But, I wish I called his number more in the second half though.” What happened there? “We definitely called his number, but some coverages are different. We didn’t stay on the field long enough. Didn’t do as well in the run game or the pass game and just didn’t get the opportunity in the second half that we had in the first.” Did I see you apologize to him when you guys were walking off the field for not getting him more catches? “I told him he needed to apologize for not getting 215 in the first half. No, I’m just joking. I definitely apologized to him. We were definitely debating on how we could do it there at the end. I didn’t think it would have been a problem, but I wish that he did get it. Because, to have that all in the first half and only be five yards away, he had an unbelievable day. It sucked that he didn’t get it.” Did someone notify you what the NFL record is and what Kittle had? “Yes, they notify me.” Who does? “I don’t remember. Probably like seven different people. I heard it plenty. I’m like a fan, I wanted it to happen and we would have forced it to happen if the situations played out differently. But the way the game was going, I wasn’t too worried. I thought it would happen naturally, but the times we did have a chance, I think we got a ball tipped, I think twice ones to him and had a couple, I think we had some pressures. We just didn’t stay on the field long enough to get it done.” What’s special about Kittle? When you’re calling plays and you know, what’s special about him to you? “The thing that he’s doing better, that I can say he’s done better than any tight end I’ve ever had, is what he’s doing after the catch. He does a good job beating man coverage and does a good job in his

Page 6: denver broncos vs san francisco 49ers...Delvin Williams - 85t vs. Was. (11/7/76)] and the longest since 9/25/05 (QB Tim Rattay to WR Brandon Lloyd - 89t vs. Dal.). • According to

routes and does a great job blocking. But, when that ball is in the air, the play is just starting. He’s trying to catch it and he runs angry and he runs confidently that he expects to score on every look. I think that’s why it’s been easier to get him the yards he has.” You were at the Broncos when Pro Football Hall of Fame TE Shannon Sharpe was at his best. Any similarities in your mind the way it changes an offense when you have a tight end can do stuff like that? “Always. You’ve got to have one. You have five eligible and there’s a bunch of different ways to use them, but anytime you can have a tight end or a halfback who can beat strong safeties and linebackers consistently, it does more than I can explain for an entire offense, not just for the tight ends and the halfbacks, but also for the receivers and the quarterback.” What happened in that second half? You guys were so good in that first half, but the second half you had such a difficult time moving the ball. “They are a good team. They played a ton of man coverage, so they didn’t change too much up. Couldn’t get our run game going. They got good edge players and very big, stout inside players. Couldn’t create enough space in that. I didn’t study the stats or anything, but when you don’t run the ball very well and you do bad on third down, which I believe we really struggled on third down in the second half, you’re not going to stay out there long.” Is there a level of concern for something like that or what are you, I mean how worried are you for something like that when you’re having that kind of difficulty? “That’s what your concerns are every single game. They held us very well the second half. I’m glad that our defense made some big stops, because we didn’t get enough points. We didn’t get any in the second half, so thank goodness our defense played well so we could still maintain our lead. You’ve got to catch the ball on third down when you’re open to move the chains and then a bunch of things change after that. You can’t have false starts and you can’t have some of the setbacks that we had.” You had a lot of young guys on defense today. What do you make of the way they played? “I thought they played hard and with passion. We’ll watch the tape and we’ll be hard on them. We’ll watch everything, but I thought our guys came out today and I just really wanted them to have fun playing football and the only way you have fun is if you play with some passion and you play together. When I’m looking up and just the energy you feel, I thought our guys really enjoyed the day. I know I enjoyed the first half a lot more than the second half, but I enjoyed the ending. I like how hard the guys played and very physical it seemed like.” Were Nickel D.J. Reed and S Marcell Harris in particular some of the guys bringing that energy you’re talking about? “Yeah. Definitely. I don’t see every single play out there, but definitely when I was looking up I saw both of those guys make a number of hits and did a good job on coverage too.” DeForest Buckner said the defense was lackadaisical last week. It didn’t look lackadaisical today, what did you see from the front seven in particular? “I thought they were rushing hard and going all day. That’s what I saw from them last week too. They had more success this week. Did a good job in the pass game. I thought we handled the run game much better. We struggled with our edges last week, which got us a number of explosives. I know they tried to hit us with a number of the same things and the guys did a much better job.” You had a number of off sides in the first half. Was that Nick and his voice inflection and what was behind all the neutral zone infractions?

Page 7: denver broncos vs san francisco 49ers...Delvin Williams - 85t vs. Was. (11/7/76)] and the longest since 9/25/05 (QB Tim Rattay to WR Brandon Lloyd - 89t vs. Dal.). • According to

“No, it’s that [Denver Broncos OLB] Von [Miller] is going to do that every time until you show him you’re going to go on two and it was frustrating for us for a little bit, especially the first time we did, I want to say it might have been on the third play of the game, I forget. But, the first time we went on two, we jumped and that’s what’s hard as an offense. These guys are teeing off the ball, we’ve got to come off and if we jump and you’re not allowed to use cadence, good luck versus that pass rush. So, we jumped a little bit early so I assume they think we’re not going to use it as much and if Von guesses right you can’t do anything about it. So, he guessed wrong a number of times in a row, which was a better job of our guys keeping their poise than they did earlier.” What happened on that victory formation there? Was there a little bit of miscalculation? You should probably be able to run it out, right? “Yeah, definitely. We thought it was dead even and then it was off one second. The play clock and the game clock were off one second. So, when you get to fourth down you have to have what we call a slow clock, where the quarterback comes back, pause just one second before he takes a knee. Which Nick was very ready for and very ready to do, but he just snapped it with six seconds left on the play clock and took a slow knee. But, it stops on fourth down, so it was a good rookie mistake and rookie rep. That was good, because he’ll learn it forever and it won’t happen again and it didn’t cost us the game.” Can you take us through the long third down play to WR Dante Pettis? “The one that got tipped? It was tipped, right?” It looked like it might have been. “We were very fortunate on that because it wasn’t a look I liked or wanted and I called time out right before it. Fortunately, the ref didn’t hear me, which I started to get very worked up about. But, then it was a helluva job of him not hearing me. I was very happy and it worked out well.” How do you assess Mullens performance? “I thought he played well. He did some real good things and was one of the reasons I won.” T Joe Staley celebrated that catch that lost five yards, is there a fine involved for something like that? “There better be. I mean not from the NFL, but his room better fine him. We show that stuff every week. When balls get tipped, we always tell the O-lineman to knock it down. Their reaction is catch it, so we always show what happens when they do catch it, they usually get their legs taken out and it’s not fun for them. But, Joe refuses to fully believe he’s an O-Lineman. He’s always trying to show us how athletic he is and that was his time so he got excited, but he hurt us. We lost five yards. So, it was not a smart play.” Was Pettis the designed target on that play? “You’re high-low on an inside player where it depends. I definitely didn’t watch what happened, because I was starting to yell, not yell at the ref, talk to the ref. It depends on what the Mike linebacker does. He’s got a chance to be number one. He’s got a chance to be number two. It depends what the Mike does.”

Page 8: denver broncos vs san francisco 49ers...Delvin Williams - 85t vs. Was. (11/7/76)] and the longest since 9/25/05 (QB Tim Rattay to WR Brandon Lloyd - 89t vs. Dal.). • According to

49ers QB Nick Mullens Press Conference – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos What happened on the third-down completion to WR Dante Pettis that went for a long gain? “Yeah, it’s actually a play we had ran a couple times before – if you remember the slant to [FB Kyle Juszczyk] Juice earlier in the game. We got the quick now, then the nod behind it and I saw they collapsed down on the now. Just saw him open. Tried to get rid of it, and tried to throw him a catchable ball before the defenders got to me. I didn’t see it. I still haven’t seen it on film, so I’m excited to go back and watch it. But, I’m really proud of the way we finished. Just really excited we finished.” What gave you confidence in making that throw to him after he dropped a third-down pass a little bit earlier? “My confidence isn’t going to waver in Dante, ever. He stepped up big-time in the past couple weeks. Those moments of truth, people got to step up. I’m pumped up, just so excited that we redeemed ourself – a handful of guys. We redeemed ourself, we finished the game and that’s something that we’ve struggled on in the past. We finished the game today and I’m really excited about that.” Talking about finishing the game, you guys got blown out the last two weeks. Do you feel the way you played in this particular game, going against a team that was in the playoff hunt, do you feel this was a statement game for you guys at all? “Sure. Yeah, why not? We take it every week one game at a time, one week at a time. We are excited, I guess you could say, to take them out of the playoff hunt. I believe they were in it. They were on a pretty hot streak. But, it was great to get a team win. Defense did a great job. A number of stops that were very crucial in the point of the game. Offense, everybody just worked together. Special teams, everybody did their part. Everybody worked really hard and that’s why it feels so good to win.” What were you feeling throughout that first half, every time you threw a ball towards TE George Kittle? “He was open every play, man. It was crazy. Shoot, all the receivers were. That’s why I give the coaches so much credit. The guys were wide open. So, that’s fun, man. The O-Line played great. They were protecting their butts off and we really just had a rhythm. I’ve said it in the past, when we really just focus on ourselves, our assignments and everybody works as a collective unit, we’re a pretty good offense, and that showed in the first half. Second half, got off our rhythm, I guess you could say. But, we finished. It was a solid first half.” On that 85-yard touchdown, did you see it unfold, like you knew pretty early? It looked like WR Marquise Goodwin was on the side and he knew immediately that Kittle had a straight path. “Yeah, it was awesome. We had a clear-out on the high cross, and George flashed in my eyes when I came off the play-action fake. George, like I’ve said so many times, he’s sneaky athletic. Caught it and ran. Used his speed that we all know he has, and it’s a touchdown for everybody. George had one heck of a day. Four yards short of the record, I’ve been told. You can blame that on me, I guess. It would’ve been really cool to get him that record. But, yeah, George balled out and it was a great play.” Were you aware of the record during the game? “I think late. Probably when we were taking knees and stuff like that. So, I thought about throwing him a pass there. No, I’m kidding.” Was he not open? Were you guys not calling his number?

Page 9: denver broncos vs san francisco 49ers...Delvin Williams - 85t vs. Was. (11/7/76)] and the longest since 9/25/05 (QB Tim Rattay to WR Brandon Lloyd - 89t vs. Dal.). • According to

“I think it’s just kind of the rhythm of the game. It was really just by coincidence that he had a lot of big plays in the first half. Every game has a different rhythm to it, a different flow. That’s just kind of how the game played out.” You’re fighting for a job, basically for next year. Obviously, in the middle of the game you’re not thinking about that. But, do you think about that, that you’re fighting for a job next year? “I’ve been fighting for a job since the day I got here. My mindset doesn’t change. Really, just try to work hard in whatever my role is for the team. I feel like that’s how I’m going to help the team. Whatever my role is, I’m going to do it to the best of my ability. I’m lucky and honored to do that.” Head Coach Kyle Shanahan said you might have snapped the ball a little bit early in the final victory formation. “Yeah, we don’t really have to talk about that. I’ll go back and watch it, see how the time played out or whatever. But, I’m pretty mad at myself, yeah.” I bet you’ll never do it again. “I shouldn’t have done it in the first place. Are you kidding me?”

49ers DL DeForest Buckner Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos

You held Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay to 30 yards today. Can you talk about how you keyed in on the run game? “Especially after last week, we put a big emphasis this week on stopping the run. It was a big deal on all levels of the defense, setting the edge. We did that today and we were happy to have this opportunity, especially against a good run team like Denver. A lot of the young guys showed up, a lot of guys got more reps. Like [CB Richard Sherman] Sherm was saying, [S] Marcell [Harris], [DB] D.J. Reed [Jr.] made some really good plays in the run game. All around, everyone ran their run fits pretty well today.” This is your third year, but what’s it like to look around the huddle and be one of the few guys who has more than two years of experience? “It’s crazy how young of a team we are because of the potential, how good this team can be. It is great to see young guys get reps and in there making plays.” What did you see on D.J. Reed’s sack? “It was great. He diced up the running back a little bit with a little up and under move and he had the first sack fumble of the year. So, it was great. It would have been better if somebody was up there to scoop it up, but it was great seeing him make plays.” When a guy like TE George Kittle was rolling as much as he was in the first half, how much were you as a whole team feeding off of that? “It doesn’t matter if it’s Kittle, it doesn’t matter who it is just feeding off of the energy. Everybody is happy to see Kittle reach 1,000 yards and break some records today so it was awesome to see him do that on a personal level for him. It definitely gets the team going for sure.”

49ers TE George Kittle Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos

Did you know during the game how close you were to setting the single-game receiving record? “Four yards. Halfway through the fourth quarter someone told me that. I was like, ‘Oh really, that would be fun.’ Next time.” You had a lot of big catches. On the big one, the 85-yard touchdown, can you give us your thinking as it’s happening? “On the play I’m supposed to sell an insert run play. We ran it two times before that with an actual run. The backs were blitzing through and everyone was crashing down, so there really wasn’t a hole to run through. I just ran over the ball and kind of just dropped in. It’s really fun, especially when you catch the ball and there’s nothing but green grass in front of you. It’s really fun because you just get to run. It was really fun.” Was that a former NFL CB Deion Sanders thing you did there? “He’s a guy that I know loves to play football, and he has the most fun playing it. So yes, a little bit.” What happened in the second half? Was it a different kind of coverage or was it just not there for you? “We won. That’s about all that matters.” How well did San Francisco 49ers QB Nick Mullens play today? “Nick got the ball where we needed to. Our offensive line gave him all the time that he needed against an incredible pass defense with [Denver Broncos LBs] Von Miller and Bradley Chubb. The fact that he could get the ball off, I think he played really well, especially on that last third down to [San Francisco 49ers WR] Dante Pettis. I was just very impressed with him.” You and Nick have very good chemistry. Is that something you work extra on besides in regular practice? “There are definitely certain routes that we work on in timing plays. That 85-yard one we hit that, we hit a lot of stuff in practice. Coach gives us a lot of opportunity to get those plays.” You didn’t have a ton of catches at Iowa, but you’re playing very confidently. Where does that come from? “All of the confidence is coaching that gives me opportunities. When you capitalize on those and you get the ball, it just builds confidence over time. That’s really all it is. The more opportunities you get and you capitalize on them, you start feeling it and start feeling good. Then you have a quarterback getting you the ball on time, that’s all that really matters. Confidence comes from that.” Your coach said you run angry. Do you feel angry when you run? “My tight ends coach always tells me that you have to make DBs catch you. So, on that first one, I wasn’t just going to let him go for my legs. You have to make people tackle you. So yes, you definitely have to play angry and play with the mindset that I’m not going to be tackled by you unless you want to tackle me.”

49ers DL Cassius Marsh Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos How did it feel to shut down Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay today, especially in the first half? “Guys were definitely happy to shut him down. There was a lot of talk about their run game and we definitely respect their run game. They have been doing a lot of great things in the last six to seven weeks or whatever it was. Yes, we were happy to shut down the run game, especially [Phillip] Lindsay.” Do you recall any opponent that had that many fourth down attempts? “What was that, three today. Not in recent memory; that is definitely up there, but situationally that is what the game called for.” What were you guys doing so well on third downs? It seemed like early on they couldn’t convert at all, especially in the first half. “I think tight coverage, mixed with the rush. The quarterback was running for his life and guys made plays. When he threw the ball, guys had PBUs [pass break-ups]. When we needed to get to the QB we got to the QB. I think it was a team win. It was great to see the offense running the ball, giving us time to rest on defense. It was just a complete game for the team.” Where does that rank as far as defense quality of games you have played this year? Is this close to about the best that you have played this year? “It is one of our better games, for sure. It was a great performance by our defense and great performance by our offense as well. It was just a great overall team win.”

49ers T Mike McGlinchey Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos You guys were able to get a lot of neutral zone infractions in the first half, what was behind that? “Well, we knew that we were going into a two-minute drive right there at the end of the half. It was an obvious pass situation and with the rushers that they have, their strength is their get off and get off the ball, especially [Denver Broncos OLB] Von [Miller]. He makes people’s lives miserable because he is able to time off counts, and he has that quick first step and all that stuff. So, all week we were preparing for that and we thought that it was a good idea to change up the snap count and work things a little bit differently than we normally do and change up the timing for him. It worked in our favor, for sure, on that drive.” What were the keys for you to have a good game against him? What did you do well? “I think that I set to a position. I got off the ball on the cadence. I had my eyes where they were supposed to be. I had my hands where they were supposed to be and I played long. I kept him off me. I tried to play situational football stay in front, make him react off of me instead of giving him a three-way or two-way go or whatever, like other guys have done in the past. I think that I did a pretty good job of that today. It took me the first two series or so to get the speed of it down, and I think we settled down after that.” You mentioned his get off. Is that what makes him great?

Page 12: denver broncos vs san francisco 49ers...Delvin Williams - 85t vs. Was. (11/7/76)] and the longest since 9/25/05 (QB Tim Rattay to WR Brandon Lloyd - 89t vs. Dal.). • According to

“Yes, absolutely. I mean his first step, his get off and his ability to bend around the edge after. That is why he is so good. His ability to change directions, stop on a dime, and his athletic ability is what sets him apart.” How about 49ers LT Joe Staley getting on the stat sheet with a catch? “Yes, we were all pretty pumped about that. His celebration was a little much for a four-yard loss but anytime anyone of us big boys touches the ball it’s pretty exciting. Joe has caught a couple passes in his college career, and I think that he has done a bunch in the NFL every now and again.”

49ers WR Dante Pettis Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos

To be able to win, that had to have felt even better than your individual performance? “Oh, absolutely. If we lost, I would’ve been so hurt. [San Francisco 49ers WR] Trent [Taylor] made a play on third down. We made a few plays when we needed to and came out on top.” It seemed on your fourth quarter catch, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted to call timeout on that play. Did you see anything wrong as far as the formation goes? “We wanted to run it against man coverage and they were in zone. I think they just busted in zone. He was like, ‘We can’t run this against zone,’ so he was about to call a different play but it worked out.” What does it say about San Francisco 49ers QB Nick Mullens that he was so calm in that situation? “He’s a baller. Nick’s a baller. He doesn’t really care, he’s going to make a play. That’s why we like him.” What does this win do for the group just to get off the losing streak? “It’s awesome. I’m learning wins are hard to come by in the NFL. So many things can go wrong. We’re very excited to get this one.”

49ers CB Richard Sherman

Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018 San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos

What was the locker room like after a much-needed win? “It’s somber obviously. Obviously, there was a huge loss to the organization and the York family when Tony passed away. Obviously, there was a lot of enthusiasm in trying to get this game for him and for the family, for Dr. York, Denise and Jed. You fight hard and you play hard, but you hope to get the bounces. We got some really cool bounces today. I’m thankful we could pull it out for the family. It feels good to win, especially in a tough season like the one we’ve been having, but you still feel for the family. There’s not much we can do outside of what we’ve done to try to help give them solace, but we’re doing everything that we can.” You’ve played with a lot of dynamic pass catchers over the years. What makes San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle so special? “He’s dynamic. George Kittle is a really dynamic player. I don’t think he gets enough credit for how athletic he is. It’s very similar to [Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis] Kelce out in Kansas City with how slippery he is. His lateral movement is deceptive. He has a ton of speed. Maybe they just ran the ball a lot more in college and didn’t give him an opportunity, but he’s just really way more athletic than people understand.”

Page 13: denver broncos vs san francisco 49ers...Delvin Williams - 85t vs. Was. (11/7/76)] and the longest since 9/25/05 (QB Tim Rattay to WR Brandon Lloyd - 89t vs. Dal.). • According to

What about Kittle’s personality in the locker room? “He’s a fun-loving guy. He’s young and has a good time regardless. He goes out there full speed and plays as hard as anybody I’ve ever met, and not just in the pass game. He’ll pancake guys, he’ll run and never complains about anything. He can block 20 times in a row and not complain. He’ll catch 20 passes and be the same guy. It’s infectious.” “We’re happy for him, he deserves everything he’s getting. Obviously, he deserves to be a Pro Bowler this year. He’s been arguably the best tight end in football, no disrespect to Kelce or [New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski] Gronk or any of those other guys that are playing good football. But to be a second-year player playing the way he is, he makes an impact every game. He’s our number one receiver yards-wise and targets-wise. It’s not like it’s a surprise that we’re throwing the ball to him against Denver, and they still couldn’t stop him. He’s just beating guys one-on-one and having a day. He had 210 yards in the first half. I don’t think I’ve seen that done, period.” You guys held Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay to 30 yards today. Can you talk about what the guys up front did? “The guys up front are animals. They played so disciplined and never get enough credit. [San Francisco 49ers DE] Arik Armstead was a monster. Obviously [San Francisco 49ers DT DeForest Buckner] DeFo gets a lot of credit. He did a phenomenal job. [San Francisco 49ers DE Solomon Thomas] Solly came in there and gave us energy and gave an impact. It was a great use of our personnel. We’re working to get different guys in different spots throughout the game. They did a phenomenal job of being disruptive and making tackles.”

49ers RB Jeff Wilson Jr. Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos

That must feel pretty nice for your first NFL start to get in there and be a contributor in a win. How neat was that? “That was the biggest blessing I could’ve ever received in my lifetime. Doing it at that altitude, with the players that I practice with and the players that put their confidence in me, seeing them happy for me and me being happy for them, it’s a great thing.” How many carries did it take before you felt like you had a rhythm going? “It was just kind of a feel thing. I just knew it was going to be a grind. I knew I was going to have to grind some yards out as well. It was just a go with the flow. I was just going and wasn’t really thinking. I was just in the zone.” A lot of off-tackle plays, a lot of momentum. Nothing wide, just north to south. Was that the plan? “Yes sir, yes sir. We knew they had a lot of big guys, especially [Denver Broncos OLB] Von [Miller] and [Denver Broncos OLB Bradley] Chubb out on the outside. We knew we were going to have to get it down and get it downhill. That way, we could get some positive yards.” We’ve seen several times this year where the offense had a chance to close it out but couldn’t get it done. What was the difference in this game, being able to get those first downs late? “It was just something we were aware of. It’s not that we weren’t aware of it before, it was just something that we really focused on, closing out games. Guys were called on and guys made plays. That’s how it’s supposed to be.”

Page 14: denver broncos vs san francisco 49ers...Delvin Williams - 85t vs. Was. (11/7/76)] and the longest since 9/25/05 (QB Tim Rattay to WR Brandon Lloyd - 89t vs. Dal.). • According to

What’d you think of San Francisco 49ers QB Nick Mullens today? “He was great. He was great. That’s my boy. You know I’ve been battling him ever since the college days. We were in the same conference. I know he’s a baller so it doesn’t surprise me.”

Denver Broncos Head Coach Vance Joseph Press Conference – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos Opening comments: “We didn’t have any in-game injuries, so just questions.” You were behind 20-0. How surprising was that? “We were very surprised. We didn’t play well in the first half. Obviously, defensively we gave [49ers TE George] Kittle way too many opportunities. He had 210 yards in the first half which is unacceptable. Offensively, we had about 69 yards in the first seven drives. So, we did not play well in the first half at all. We played better in the second half. Even in the first half, we had 10 penalties. So, we were undisciplined, we didn’t play well and it showed. The second half, being down by three scores, it was tough to get back in the game. We tried, the guys played hard. But, it wasn’t good enough today.” What was your message to the team after the game? “Simply, we didn’t play well, no excuses. We can’t point fingers. That team came out and outplayed us, in the first half especially. Our record right now, we’re still in it. Every game now is a must win. We haven’t talked about that, but we have to now. Every game that we play from now on is a must win.” You were shorthanded. How much did that have to do with coming out sluggish? “No, we’re fine. We had no excuses. We had good plays called. We could have called some better plays, but obviously we didn’t play good.” What happened with Kittle? He’s the one that was being targeted. Was it a breakdown in assignment? “Absolutely. Well, we had one blown coverage and we had a couple where we just didn’t cover him. He beat us one-on-one. He’s a great player. We knew coming into the game that he’s the guy we had to stop and we didn’t get it done.” The long touchdown, was that the blown assignment? “Yes, blown coverage.” Early in the fourth quarter, you had a bunch of fourth down decisions to make. Just talk about those. In retrospect, do you think maybe punt the first time? “No, absolutely not. We got down by two scores, we have to get points. The numbers speak to going for it on fourth down there. So, we stayed with our chart and we went for it. We had some good plays called, we missed some throws there. We could have made some better plays in some spots. But, I’m very comfortable with how we managed the game as far as the fourth downs.” What allowed them to bottle up Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay? “Well, it’s a front that’s a single-high defense. So, the front is loaded every single down. You have to dig out safeties, you have to dig out backers. We knew that coming into the game that it wasn’t going to be easy running the football on this defense because they’re cover-three and cover-man free every down so they have one extra guy in the box. So, it was going to be a chore, but it wasn’t our first time facing this type of defense. We’ve had success in the past and did not today.”

Page 15: denver broncos vs san francisco 49ers...Delvin Williams - 85t vs. Was. (11/7/76)] and the longest since 9/25/05 (QB Tim Rattay to WR Brandon Lloyd - 89t vs. Dal.). • According to

How do you think the receivers did without Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders? “They did fine. It’s a good group. It’s a group that [Denver Broncos QB] Case [Keenum] trusts. Obviously, they’re young and they’ll play better and better as we go.” The passing game seems to be, there’s a trend developing where Case is hanging onto the ball for a long time, he steps up. Nothing is open in the clean pocket part or--? “I can’t say it’s a trend. I have to watch the tape and see that. But, obviously the passing game wasn’t great early. We made some plays late, but it wasn’t great early.” You had to go for it on fourth downs. What was happening on third down today? “We were what, two for 15 on third down? When you’re down by two scores and you’re facing these third-and-eight, eight-pluses, it’s tough to convert. So, it forced us to go for a couple of fourth downs early. We converted five out of seven fourth downs so that wasn’t our problem. Our problem was two for 15.” You guys had to work so hard just to get back to .500. With a short week now, how tough will it be to regroup? “It won’t be tough. Our guys are resilient. We’ve been that way all year. We’ll reset them and we’ll go play good football on Saturday.” This was a milestone game for your two pass rushers. Denver Broncos LB Von Miller tied the team high and Denver Broncos LB Bradley Chubb tied Von’s rookie record. “They’ve played good all year so I’m not surprised. Obviously, those records are important to those players. They work hard for those numbers. But obviously, with the game, it takes the sting away a little bit.” Von had three penalties in the first half. When he gets that first one, does he have to stop guessing on the snap count? “Absolutely, stop guessing. It’s simple as that. You can’t do that. That kept the drive alive and they got a touchdown at the half. That drive, we had three or four penalties. It’s undisciplined, we can’t do it and it cost us.” You had that unexpected chance there at the end. How many options do you have there to try to get it to the end zone? “You have a couple of options. You can throw a hail Mary, but you’re so far back. Hook and ladder is the best play you’ve got, just keep tossing the ball back there as best as you can to try to score.”

Broncos QB Case Keenum Press Conference – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos What was going on in the first half that was causing you guys to have some struggles there do you think? “A lot of things. We didn’t play well. We didn’t play well really at all. You got to give those guys credit. They came out and played extremely hard. We quit playing. We got, for whatever reason, we put ourselves in tough situations on third down and didn’t convert things down the field, didn’t help our defense out and it’s tough. We’ve got to help our defense out. We’ve got to keep them off the field. We’ve got to do better than going three-and-out. We’ve got to do better. We’ve got to stay on the field. We have to score points and we didn’t do that at all the first half especially.”

Page 16: denver broncos vs san francisco 49ers...Delvin Williams - 85t vs. Was. (11/7/76)] and the longest since 9/25/05 (QB Tim Rattay to WR Brandon Lloyd - 89t vs. Dal.). • According to

What’s it like when you’re trying to get out of that rut, and get back to moving the ball and scoring points? “It’s tough, because we’re all frustrated. We didn’t feel flat early. I didn’t feel like we were walking around. I felt like everybody had the right focus, had the right intensity, knew what was at stake, but I don’t know what it is. We’ve just got to go out and slap ourselves in the face or something, and get going early, because we’ve got to get it going early.” Those fourth downs, I think you went for seven in the second half. What would you like the ones that weren’t, the two that didn’t get converted with Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay? What did you see on those? “The one I can kick it out to Phillip quicker than the flat, give him a better chance to make a move. I like that guy one-on-one with anybody, but if I give him a little better ball, give it to him a little early. The other one, he made a good play. It was close. I have to watch it on film. I don’t really watch, you know, live.” As a captain, how do you keep the locker room focused moving forward now that you can’t afford to drop another one? “We keep doing what we’re doing. We don’t have to change anything ourselves as far as our mindset goes, and we stay together. We continue to come to work every day and we try to do our best. Obviously, things are probably out of our hands now as far as we might need to count on other people for certain things, but those are things we can’t worry about. We just have to do what we do, control what we can control and try to go 1-0. We have a great opportunity this week with a Saturday night game with a team that’s made some strides and is playing well, and we have our work cut out for us again.” Even when you guys won three in a row, the starts were slow. Even you’ve been better in the second half than in the first. What can you pinpoint it to? What do you think the deal is there? It came back to haunt you today. “You can’t do that every week and expect to be successful. I think we rolled the dice too many times and came up short this time, ran out of time, literally. It’s a bunch of things. It’s third downs, we were two for 15, or something like that. I know a lot of those we were in fourth down territory, so we kind of knew what we were doing but maybe you got to put yourself in better third and manageable situations. I think it’s keeping them first and second down. There’s a lot of things that we have to go look at the film for for this game.” What are you thinking there at the end when you get that unexpected last chance to go out--? “Yeah, you never know. I’ve been in those situations before where you kind of count it out. You try a different play and obviously, your chances are very small but, you try to run around a little bit and see what happens.” Being shorthanded like you guys were today, how did that affect you guys early, getting things going? “Shorthanded, like?” Well, without a few of your players. “Oh, like injuries? Yeah, it’s tough. There are guys that you can’t replace. You know, [Denver Broncos WR] Emmanuel [Sanders] and guys up front that we had. You can’t replace what they do, but that’s a great opportunity for some young guys to step up and make plays. I thought [Denver Broncos WR] DaeSean [Hamilton] came up today huge. [Denver Broncos WR] Timmy [Tim] Pats [Patrick] made some big plays for us, guys I trust. Man, I trust all those guys. I thought [Denver Broncos WR] Dray [Andre Holmes] came in, and being here a week he got a lot of plays today and I probably had him

open on a few different plays that I probably shouldn’t have put the ball on him. But, he’s a pro and I’m excited to get going with those guys, you know [Denver Broncos WR] Courtland [Sutton], Deshaun and Timmy.”

Broncos S Su’a Cravens Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos

This loss doesn’t tell a good story to get to the playoffs. Mentally, where does this team need to be right now? “I do not care. As I said before this game, we don’t care what people say or what the math says. We’re going to play our game, we’re going to go 100 percent, no matter what, and we’re going to live with the results. Tip your hats off to the 49ers. They got us. They beat us. We’re off to Cleveland now.” With San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle having that huge first half, you were able to hold him without a reception in the second half. Did you make some adjustments, or did they go away from him? “We adjusted the zone. Plain and simple. For a guy that was doing what he did in the first half, to be able to stop his production and limit his catches, you have to go zone and keep eyes on him. Also, you have to keep your eyes on the quarterback. I think we did a good job taking him away in the second half.”

Broncos NT Shelby Harris Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos It seems to be the same theme. In the first half, you guys are completely out of it. Then everything turns around in the second half and you guys play yourselves right back into the game. Can you talk about that? “We just have to be consistent. We can’t go out in the first half and go down 20-0. Their record doesn’t show it, but San Francisco is a much better team than 2-10. Against a good team you have to go out and not get shut out in the first half. We have to play better. We have to execute. We can’t keep putting ourselves in a hole and then try to get out of it every week.” The biggest adjustment was against San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle. He was able to do what he wanted in the first half. He did not have a single catch in the second half after having 210 yards in the first half. “He had a good game. He went out there and played football the way it is supposed to be played. That’s what you are supposed to do. That’s the goal. We have to go out there and do everything better. There is no excuse. We have to do everything better. We have to go in on Tuesday and figure all of this out” What was the message from Denver Broncos Head Coach Vance Joseph after the game? “We just can’t keep shooting ourselves in the foot. Against a good team, you can’t go out there and spot them 20 points and expect to come back and win. That’s not how it works. We have to go out and fight for all four quarters. We can’t come back at half time and think that we are just going to turn it around.”

Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos

Can you talk about the difference between the two halves of the game? The first half was punt after punt after punt, and then the second half, what changed? You guys were able to turn things around on offense. “It’s about getting into a rhythm. We didn’t do a good job in the first half. The second half, we had a little bit more spunk, a little bit more rhythm going into it, a little bit more attitude. That’s on us. We’ve got to start fast. We can’t keep our defense on the field when we’re not completing drives. We’ve got to complete drives.” You don’t want to use it as an excuse, but you had a lot of guys starting who weren’t used to starting. Does it take some time to gel with them, perhaps? “That’s not an excuse. We’re in the NFL. We’re getting paid to do this. The next man up needs to step up, and we just didn’t step up. We had opportunities in the first half to make some plays, and we didn’t.” You had six rookies starting out there today. Did you look at the offensive line and think, “Where are the O-guys at?” “It’s the same. The old dudes have trained us and taught us well. It kind of just feels the same. We just have to go out there and make more plays. That’s all it is. When you’re playing football, you go the entire game, but it all lands on about eight plays in the whole game. We have to execute those eight plays.” It was a brutal first half that put you in a hole that was almost impossible to get out. What happened? “We just didn’t execute the plays that were called, and that’s on us. It’s all about execution. We need to go back to square one and go back to work.” Are you more disappointed or angry coming into an effort like this where you guys really needed to win a football game? “Frustrated. I think we all are. We’re frustrated because you don’t want to lose. We’ll go back, watch some film, and then move on.”

Broncos OLB Von Miller Press Conference – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos I thought you guys shut them out in the second half, you didn’t allow very many yards. What changed from the first half to the second? “I don’t know. We just relaxed I guess. We didn’t come out swinging in the second half. We just, I don’t know. We just aren’t playing. The San Francisco 49ers, they’re a talented team. They played well today. They beat us today. For me personally, three false starts in the first half is just flat out ridiculous. I’m a gambling man and I broke today. I broke today. I put my team in a horrible situation, very undisciplined and guessing around, but in the end it ended up hurting us and that’s on me.” On those, are you trying to get the jump to get something going, because you’re trailing or--? “Yeah, just trying to get a jump to make a play, especially after the first two. You know, I’m thinking if the first two are hard counts I’m thinking then I’ll do it a third time, and it did. I guess I’ll head back to the lab. We’ve been counted out before. I’ve been counted out before and being in this situation as a team it’s nothing new to us. So, get back in the lab and work towards the Cleveland Browns.”

Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph said in the locker room, he said he was upfront with you guys that you can’t lose again. You’ve got to win out. What’s that mentality like? “I mean, yeah. Every game has been a win out in my opinion. So, this is a tough space that I’m used to playing in, especially this season. So, it’s nothing new for our team. We’ll be alright.” Did you feel like you were flat as a team or did they just play better ball than you? “I wasn’t flat. 85 is a hell of a player. [San Francisco 49ers TE] George Kittle’s a hell of a player and he took some 10-yard plays the distance today. There’s not too many tight ends in the league that can do that. We knew coming into the game that he was going to be talented. We knew coming into the game he was going to make plays, but the plays that he made today he just killed us on top of the penalties, and on top of my penalties that increased the situation. He just killed us.”

Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018 San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos

You guys got in such a hole in the first half, and it looked like you were doomed. Then you battle back for heartbreaking finish there. “We got off to a slow start and then we picked it up in the second half. We just had to get it going. It was our first time as an offense all together in there. We were kind of shaky in the beginning, but once we got it clicking it was hard to stop us.” It is that a little bit of it, it took you guys a little while to gel? “You could say that but we just didn’t come out ready to play, honestly. We do need to gel, but you can’t coach effort.” You had to believe there at the end, because you kept scoring, kept getting the ball back to you, and it just seemed too little too late. “Exactly, too little too late. I am happy with the receiving core and the way we fought. It just wasn’t enough for us today.” It looks like a pretty tough hill to climb now with the loss. “It is never over until it is actually over. It is the NFL. You can lose to anybody day in and day out. We are just going to continue working and get back on a winning streak.”

Broncos S Justin Simmons Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos It was a tale of two halves, nothing going right in the first half, and it turns around in the second half but just not enough. “You can’t win playing the way we did in the first half, especially defensively. We made the right adjustments at the half that needed to be made. We needed to get the win and that is what matters.” In the first half San Francisco 49ers TR, George Kittle really created a lot of problems for you guys--? “They did some things schematically offensively. They found different ways to get him the football. We came in at halftime and made those corrections to fix those big plays we were giving up. Ultimately, it wasn’t enough. We just need to get a couple more turnovers to truly get us back into it.”

Page 20: denver broncos vs san francisco 49ers...Delvin Williams - 85t vs. Was. (11/7/76)] and the longest since 9/25/05 (QB Tim Rattay to WR Brandon Lloyd - 89t vs. Dal.). • According to

You guys got back into the game at the end and you had chances for a couple of stops, but you were not able to finish. “At the end of the game you have to get off the field. The offense did a job of going down and getting points. Defensively we have to get off the field and get the ball out of the offensive’s hands.” After three straight wins you had put yourselves back in the playoff picture, but after this loss, a tough hill to climb for you. “We have three more weeks left. The ball has to bounce our way with a couple teams losing here and there. We still control our own destiny to close out the season 9-7. That is all we are focused on.”

Broncos S Darian Stewart Postgame Quotes – December 9, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Denver Broncos

Today was a tough game. How did it feel? “I felt good waking up this morning. Our hats go off to the 49ers. They came to play today and they made some big plays. They really had a great scheme.” It seems like there was low energy and the offense really had trouble getting going until the second half. Did it feel that way on the field? “Defensively, I feel like our energy was right. I can’t speak for the offense. We talk about starting fast. We have to be able to do that. We can’t lollygag. When you have a chance to play a 2-10 team you have to put them away. Our mindset wasn’t right today. We talked about dominating them but instead they came out and handled their business.” Why was it so hard to stop San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle today? “They had some stuff for him. He’s a great talent. We saw it on film too. They found a way to get him the ball. He’s a solid player. He’s going to be good for a long time.” With the gravity of this loss, at this time of the year with the play-off race, how do you stay positive, keep going and keep pushing towards that angle? “Well, we have a job to do. This is the NFL. Like I always say, we are competitive. We have to keep fighting and get ready for next week.”
