DentAlumni Fall 2011

It has been a busy time as Interim Dean, meeting and planning with the University adminis-tration, faculty, students, alumni, organized dentistry, and our funding agencies. As busy as it has been for the fi rst few months, it has been equally rewarding and productive.

Being the “iDean,” as the student dentists put it, makes me feel like an Apple product such as an iPod or iPhone. Neither of which I thought I needed but probably would have a hard time living without today. Technology has dramatically changed workplaces and healthcare, and dentistry is no exception. Of course, being the iDean isn’t so bad if you consider that Apple has more money than the federal government! As I refl ect on the history and legacy of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, I am struck with the impact of its legacy of innovation and intuition. At the same time I look at the impact of computers and realize that being an institution which embraces innovation has tremendous advantages as we move forward.

At about the time the University of Alabama School of Dentistry was founded, Thomas Wat-son, the Chairman of IBM, was quoted as saying, “I think there is a world market for maybe fi ve computers.” Obviously his intuition was a little off as it was IBM that introduced the PC in 1981 which forever changed the workplace.

Today our students (and faculty for that matter) rarely if ever venture into the library, yet have knowledge of every drug and disease their patients present with at their fi ngertips. Actually more correctly they have the information on the tips of their thumbs as they rapid-fi re text messages and searches at frightening speed. It makes me wonder if there will be an increase in thumb and wrist overuse injuries in the future. Which brings me back to innovation and the University of Alabama macro-ergonomics approach known as 4-handed dentistry.

Macro-ergonomics is an approach that emphasizes a broad system view of design, examining organizational environments, culture, and work goals. It deals with the physical design of tools and the environment. Macro-ergonomics, also known as organizational design, began to receive recognition as a sub-discipline of ergonomics during the 1980s. However, it was already happening and being taught on the UAB campus long before that. At fi rst dentists across the nation didn’t think they needed it and now would not know how to work without it. History tends to repeat itself.

Today we work in an era of electronic patient schedules and paperless patient records, in which digital radiography, digital photography and three-dimensional imaging are commonplace. Many restorations are CAD-CAM designed and digitally waxed, and digital impressions will likely be commonly used within fi ve years. Fortunately the faculty at the School of Dentistry is intuitive and is leading the way once again toward tomorrow’s innovations. Which of course makes it a good time to be the iDean.

Grateful Patients, Thanksgiving and the Iron Bowl

In a nutshell, the GratefulSo many of you have made gifts to the Annual Fund or Dean’s DiscretionaryFund …. OR … both! Recently I’ve received some inquiries about these. Ina nutshell…

When you contribute to the Annual Fund, you are making a gift to a School of Dentistry account. This account is supervised by Dean Thomas but mayhave some restrictions on its use according to state law. For example, thesefunds can’t be used to purchase alcohol, gifts of appreciation, or even fl ow-ers.

When you make a gift to the Dean’s Discretionary Fund, you are making a gift to the Alumni Association. The Association holds it in an account for Dean Thomas’s use. He may request funds for student travel, events for visiting scholars, special events that serve alcohol, etc…Many of these items are better suited coming from the alumni account and may not be payable from a state account. All of these requests are subject to the Alumni Associa-

tion Executive Council for approval.

Many of you give to the Annual Fund and belong to a list of supporters called the Dean’s Partner Giving Club ($1,000 to$9,999). These gifts are deeply appreciated and are counted in offi cial university fundraising totals. Gifts to the Alumni Asso-ciation Dean’s Discretionary Fund are also greatly needed but aren’t counted in those totals. Both of these are tax deductible.

Patient Program encourages all of our alumni to select one or two patients to donate an honorarium in the dentist’s name in lieu of payment for services rendered. You are donating your procedure. The patient is making the monetary donation. Bothyou and the patient will be recognized for your generosity.

Like many other organizations, the School of Dentistry Alumni As-sociation must be proactive and creative to continue its impact on the school, our students, and our future. The adage of “strength in num-bers” holds true for the Alumni Association. Your School of Dentistry Alumni Association membership is 1,262 strong, but can be much stronger. While membership saw a modest increase last year, there has been a general decline or non-growth the past few years. That is the national norm. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, vol-unteerism declined again last year. Young professional volunteerism and membership is particularly challenging. About 22 percent of the 25 to 34 year old age group volunteer for some organization. The Alumni Association offers many, many benefi ts to those who join. First, members can participate in our Alumni Weekend, now the largest dental continuing education forum in the state. The speakers are world class. Second, alumni dues help support the school. Our graduates may give individually, but the Association also supports scholarships, student travel, Graduation, the White Coat Ceremony, and other school activities. Third, there are many opportunities to net-

work through alumni gatherings, where the focus is on your association with the school. Finally, through a cooperative agreement with the UAB National Alumni Association, our members receive discounts from numerous retailers and service providers.

As a graduate of the School of Dentistry, don’t you want your Alumni Association to be recognized as the best? Here’s a few thoughts on how you can help:

• Encourage non-members to join the Alumni Association• Volunteer to help with Alumni Weekend or other special events• Be an advocate for the school and refer potential students to the Admissions Department• Stress the importance to young alumni the importance of being involved.Your Alumni Association has a great relationship with other dental organizations (in and out-of-state). True, there is a lot of overlap in membership. However, each organization has a unique mission. If the Alumni Association is to continue to have a strong voice and do great things for our members and for dental education, membership and participation must grow. Our offi cers and staff value your input and we would love to hear from you.

On a fi nal note, as I have done the last few years, I would like to predict the outcome of the Alabama-Au-burn game. Last year I picked the Tide and had to eat crow as the Tigers not only won in historic fashion, but also captured the national championship. This year the game is down on the Plain. My prediction in another classic: Alabama 27 Auburn 26

Excellence for Endodontics Campaign Is Huge SuccessThe Excellence for Endodontics Campaign has eclipsed the $900,000 mark thanks to the support of generous alumni. Funds raised will be used to renovate the endo-dontic clinic. The clinic will be moved from the fourth to fi fth fl oor. Renovations should be completed in 2012.

The Excellence for Endodontics Campaign steering committee is chaired by Dr. Joel Hearn of Florence and under the direction of Department of Endodontics Chairman Dr. Paul Eleazer. Steering committee mem-bers include: Dr. Bradley Alley (Huntsville), Dr. Jim Ballard (Birmingham), Dr. John D. Barnes (Huntsville), Dr. Stanley Beard (Jackson), Dr. Brian Bozeman (Santa Rosa, CA), Dr. Lee Van Carroll (Dothan), Dr. Norman Ford (Columbus, MS), Dr. John Lightfoot (Montgom-ery), Dr. Paul McCrary (Huntsville), Dr. Carol Merkle (Ft. Walton Beach, FL), Dr. Jim Mills (Tuscaloosa), Dr. David Norrington (Austell, GA), Dr. Jim Smith (Birmingham), Dr. Donnie Sutton (Gadsden), Dr. Gerry Weinacker, (Mobile), Dr. Derek White (Jackson, MS), and Dr. Gary Wolanek (Auburn).

Dentsply Tulsa Dental made a gift of $400,000. The clinic will bear the company’s name. To date, approximately twenty alumni have made gifts of

$10,000 or more. Several have given at the $25,000 level. The School of Dentistry will also provide funds.

The endodontic clinic has not undergone a major reno-vation since 1975. “This renovation is for the DMD students and the endodontic residents,” says Joel Hearn, DMD. “Our endodontic facilities will now mirror the outstanding training that has been the program’s hallmark,” says Hearn.

The clinic is one of the busiest facilities in the school. Dental students and residents provide surgical and non-surgical endodontic care to about 2,500 patients annu-ally. The state-of-the-art clinic will act as a classroom where students and residents obtain a valuable portion of their education leading to board certifi cation. An important aspect will be the one-on-one faculty supervi-sion of student procedures.

“I want to thank Dr. Hearn and our fundraising com-mittee for their efforts,” says Paul Eleazer, DDS, Chair of the Department of Endodontics. “Their hard work, combined with the phenomenal support of our alumni, are the reasons for the project’s success,” says Eleazer.
