President’s Message

Ross M. Fraker, ’80

“Over the past nineyears of his time,we as alumni haveseen or participatedin many majorevents such as theD1 laboratorytransformation andcreation of severalendowed chairs.”

An era is passing. But what aride! As we work our way into thenew millennium in this the year2001 the impending stepping downof Dean Paul Robertson compels usto look back at the pathway we havebeen privileged to travel with him.

Over the past nine years of histime, we as alumni have seen orparticipated in many major eventssuch as the D1 laboratorytransformation and creation ofseveral endowed chairs. However, for every major event, there arecountless other behind the scenesaccomplishments or minorachievements contributing to theeminence of our School. Certainlyyour support throughout the years, whatever your comfort level, helpedgive our Dean the confidence topursue his development of theexcellent reputation that theUniversity of Washington School ofDentistry now enjoys. Even minorcontributions such as a duesincrease for added scholarshipfunds or an alumni golf tournamentfor fundraising are indications thatyou want to support your school andhelp mentor the students destined toreplace us. Because DeanRobertson knew the alumni werewaiting in the wings he was, forexample, able to do his magic withbudgets or to contribute funds tohelp retain our outstanding facultyin the face of lower pay andconstant raiding by other schools.I want to congratulate you for whatyou have helped him accomplishthrough your tremendous support.

Recently the Dean’s SearchCommittee narrowed the candidatelist to four and from these two havebeen invited to the campus. Multi-level interviews were conducted.Dr. Harvey Schenkein wasinterviewed the first week ofFebruary and Dr. Dianne Rekowduring the last week of that month.Your class representatives andofficers were part of the interviewprocess. We expect a speedyselection provided the candidatespresented a satisfactory showing.

I also want to bring yourattention to future events. TheErnie Jones Lecture will bepresented on Friday, March 23,2001. Dr. John Molinari will bespeaking on the topic, “EmergingInfection Control” in HognessAuditorium at the Dental School.More details follow in this issue ofthe newsletter. I urge you to alsoattend the luncheon and businessmeeting held that day in the DonJames Center at Husky Stadium. We have a short business meeting, elect new officers and hear a stateof the school address by DeanRobertson. Finally, we will bringthe day to a close with the All-Classes Reunion Dinner at theColumbia Tower Club beginning at6:30pm. There we will toast thenew officers and honor this year’soutstanding distinguished alumnus,Dr. Henry J. Van Hassel. Pleaseplan to join us in celebrating thisspecial occasion. Can you believethat in Seattle we are asking formore rain?

Update on the Search for a new Dean

The Search Advisory Committeecompleted the initial phase of itswork in January. They reviewed atotal of sixty-eight potentialcandidates for the position of Deanof the UW School of Dentistry. Aftermany weeks of reviewing as muchinformation as possible about theseindividuals, informal interviews tookplace with eight potential candidates.Based on these interviews and allother information collected, theCommittee chose to present fourindividuals to President RichardMcCormick for his consideration.

President McCormick invited twoof these candidates to have formalinterviews here on campus. The twochosen were E. Dianne Rekow, DDS,PhD and Harvey Schenkein, DDS,PhD. Dr. Rekow is Professor andChair of the Department ofOrthodontics at the New Jersey

Dental School, University ofMedicine and Dentistry of NewJersey. Dr. Schenkein is AssistantDean for Research at the School ofDentistry, Virginia CommonwealthUniversity. Both accepted invitationsto visit Seattle and made their visitsduring the month of February. Eachcandidate gave formal presentationsand had multiple interviews withadministration, faculty, staff, students, alumni and theprofessional community whilevisiting the campus.

These visits provided anopportunity to evaluate the excellentcandidates as well as a chance toshow them the many strengths of theUniversity of Washington and theUW School of Dentistry. The finaldecision as to a new Dean may bevery near a conclusion at the printingof this issue.

Accumulated knowledge describing the risks of hepatitis B,hepatitis C, human immunodeficiency virus infection, tuberculosis, and other occupational infections haveincreased both the awareness and efficiency of health careinfection control practices. These and other infectiousdisease challenges are considered in light of current scientificevidence, OSHA bloodborne disease regulations, and CDC/ADA guidelines. The application of aseptic techniqueprinciples and universal precautions for the treatment ofpatients is reinforced throughout the session. Evolving issuesincluding patient and provider allergic reactions to latex, strategies for control of dental waterline contamination, andrespiratory protection against aerosolized pathogens are alsoemphasized. In addition, updated information regardingappropriate vaccines for health care professionals, instrument reprocessing protocols, heat sterilizationmodalities and monitoring, protective barriers anddisposable items, evaluation of available products and theirapplication in disinfection procedures, as well as other areasof concern, are considered in the context of developingtechnologies. The overall objective of this presentation is toprovide scientific and clinical information to assist dentalprofessionals in the application of effective, practicalinfection control.
