Title Psychology in Our World

ECTS credits 6

Short Decription In the field of social psychology, we study the effects of the real or imagined presence of others on the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of individuals. The questions asked in social psychology have to do with our daily lives in the social world, and often seek to find answers to social mysteries. Power, personalities, attraction, stress, families, the act of winning and the experience of losing, all exert profound, but often undetected, effects on both people’s individual lives and how we interact with others. These phenomena, and the culture in which they are embedded, affect our psyches, our professions, and our choices. Questions beg for answers in social psychology such as, “Why would a person that is considered ‘at the top’ make a decision that threatens that position by a choice that is more than risky?” “Why does someone get out of one unhealthy relationship and then make a choice to get into different unhealthy relationships?” “Do the ends justify the means?” Greed, altruism, narcissism, and deception surround us in life, what are their origins? Does nature or nurture influence us more in who we are and what we chose? In this course, we will seek to find answers to these questions and many others by studying the major perspectives of social psychology. This course draws from a range of theoretical, clinical, and methodological approaches to explore several key questions: Where does the drive to pursue and persevere originate? Do we control our choices, and what is the theory behind decision-making? Is change something that lies within us and why is it so hard to make necessary changes? How does psychology play a part in our habits, the choice of partners, in our professional careers? What are the origins of power, narcissism, altruism, grit, and risk-taking? We will analyze and discuss both the scholarly ramifications of these ideas and also how to understand them in our lives and society more broadly.

discriminate between human faces and monkey faces in babies of 12 months? And why is this difference not present at 6 months? Cognitive development is typically measured by changes or improvements in cognitive processes. In this course, topics such as language, executive functions and the impact of traumatic brain injury will be explored in terms of their developmental trajectory and how this trajectory relates to changes in the maturing brain. We will examine how these developmental changes can be measured by various neurological methods (e.g. fMRI and EEG). The field trip included in the course focuses on the importance of neuroscientific research methods and forms a unique and practical insight into the subject matter. Midway through the course the students will construct a research proposal regarding developmental neuropsychology and present this proposal. To conclude the course, students will sit a written exam.

Short Description Mental disorders, e.g. schizophrenia, dementia, depression, are common across all countries and constitute about 14% of the global burden of disease. Many people with a mental disorder - and the majority of those living in low income countries - still have no access to the treatments they need. This module will offer students from a range of backgrounds, e.g. social sciences, medicine, psychology, an understanding of basic principles of how mental disorders present, the impact on individuals and the advances in treatment and recovery. The module will address general aspects of the aetiology of mental disorders, the setting within which such disorders are managed in the UK and globally and finally bring the students in touch with people with lived experience of a mental disorder in order to elucidate aspects of stigma and health and social inequalities. Most importantly, we hope that students will be inspired to further their interest in this field and go on to develop a career in mental health.

Title How to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of psychological interventions

ECTS credits 3 (credits can only be obtained if you also take other summer schools and earn a total of at least 4 ECTS)

Short Description The number of studies examining relevant research questions is staggering. Each year thousands of new randomized controlled trials are conducted, and endless numbers of epidemiological and experimental studies are published each year. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews can help researchers, but they can also prove useful for consumers and policymakers looking to draw conclusions on multiple studies. Meta-analyses have become a major tool for summarising results of scientific research, and they are widely used for making policy decisions, developing treatment guidelines, and setting priorities for new research. In this course, students will learn why meta-analyses are important and how to carry out the necessary steps to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis. Relevance of the course Meta-analyses and systematic reviews are getting more and more important to summarize existing knowledge and translate that knowledge to clinical practice. Understanding and conducting meta-analyses and systematic reviews belongs to the core competencies of all researchers in the clinical field.

Title How to Conduct a Meta-Analysis Using Open-Science Software

ECTS credits 3 (credits can only be obtained if you also take other summer schools and earn a total of at least 4 ECTS)

Short Description “Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are essential tools for summarizing evidence accurately and reliably (…)” (Liberati et al., p. 1). Currently, meta-analysis is a widely applied technique. It applies to many of today’s issues surrounding scientific research. It can be used not only to reach conclusions regarding the overall effect of proven correlation, but it is also essential for finding and estimating publication bias. The meta-analysis is also useful when conducting a priori power analysis to design sample size. During this course, students will learn how to formulate a problem and analyze it conducting a meta-analysis in JASP, an open-science software. Also, students will practice a wide-and-far literature search and will learn how to report their findings following the PRISMA standards. Students will learn the basics of how to prepare and describe a meta-analytical study in a separate article. They will see how to apply this technique to summarise studies found in a manuscript in order to improve the cohesion and “publishability.”

Title A Rhetoric-Based Approach to Grant Proposal Writing

ECTS credits 2 (credits can only be obtained if you also take other summer schools and earn a total of at least 4 ECTS)

Short Description This course begins from the premise that a well-written grant is one that provides relevant information to the reader when they expect it. This course will give students tools for building that relationship and opportunities to practice those tools. It is appropriate for researchers in the natural and life sciences, psychology, data science, social sciences, and humanities. Other approaches to grant writing training usually focus on 1) executing templates or 2) explaining specific funding mechanisms and requirements of the funding agencies. They prize clarity and simplicity in sentences, but they do not guide how those sentences relate to each other. Nor do they necessarily describe what clarity and simplicity is meant to serve. This course is diferent: it aims to help new grant writers understand the grant text as an opportunity to build a relationship with a reader.

Title Maastricht Brain Stimulation Summer School

ECTS credits 4 full days to approximately 32 hours (1 ECTS)

Short Description This summer school is an intensive four-day course on non-invasive brain stimulation. Mornings are filled with lectures by international experts, starting from the basics of brain stimulation (transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial electric stimulation) and

ranging to state-of-the-art multimodal applications (e.g. experimental and simultaneous combination of brain stimulation (TMS/TES) with neuroimaging tools such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography EEG)) as well as short outings to invasive brain stimulation approaches. Clinical research and applications are briefly covered, but the core of the program focuses on fundamental and applied empirical brain research using brain stimulation techniques. Concrete applications, protocols, and experimental designs are discussed in the context of breakthrough literature from recent years. In afternoons, hands-on practice is offered using both magnetic (TMS) and electric (tDCS, tACS) stimulation tools, in intensive supervised practical sessions. Demonstrations of multimodal approaches are provided and participants (Master, PhD, post-doc level) have ample opportunity to interactively address any concerns or question they may have related to their own research.

Title Complexity Methods for Behavioural Science: A Toolbox for Studying Change

Short Description Complexity research transcends the boundaries between the classical scientific disciplines and is a hot topic in physics, mathematics, biology, economy as well as psychology and the life sciences. This course will discuss techniques that allow for the study of human behaviour from the perspective of the Complexity Sciences, specifically, the study of complex physical systems that are alive and display complex adaptive behaviour such as learning, development and creativity. Contrary to what the term “complex” might suggest, complexity research is often about finding simple models/explanations that are able to describe a wide range of qualitatively different behavioural phenomena. “Complex” generally refers to the object of study: Complex systems are composed of many constituent parts that interact with one another across many different temporal and spatial scales to generate behaviour at the level of the system as a whole, in complex systems “everything is interacting with everything”. The idea behind many methods for studying the dynamics of complex systems is to exploit the fact that “everything is interacting” and quantify the degree of periodicity, nonlinearity, context sensitivity or resistance to perturbation (resilience) of system behaviour. Applications in the behavioural sciences are very diverse and concern analyses of continuous time or trial series data such as response times, heart rate variability or EEG to assess proficiency of skills, or health and well-being. Complexity methods can also be used for the analysis of categorical data, such as behaviour observation of dyadic interactions (client-therapist, child-caregiver), daily experience sampling, social and symptom networks. The complex systems approach to behavioural science often overlaps with the idiographic approach of “the science of the individual”, that is, the goal is not to generalise properties or regularities to universal or statistical laws that hold at the level of infinitely large populations, but to apply general principles and universal laws that govern the adaptive behaviour of all complex systems to a specific case, in a specific context, at a specific moment in time.

Title International Summer School in Affective Sciences (ISSAS) Emotions & Well being

ECTS credits About 66 hours (2.5 ECTS)

Short Description This year's International Summer School in Affective Sciences presents a very exciting opportunity to address the theme of ‘emotions and well-being’ in an interdisciplinary manner, with contributions from leading scholars in psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and the humanities more generally. The school will be a great opportunity to explore related themes like definitions and conceptions of well-being, the role of emotions in decision-making, affective determinants of mental health, and the value of well-being and happiness. Participants will include some of the world's leading experts in emotion and well-being, and a selected group of highly motivated, promising PhD students and postdocs who are working on such topics. The summer school consists of a series of traditional, theme-specific lectures and workshops to develop certain topics and skills. Furthermore, an important part of the week will be dedicated to interdisciplinary group work where students will be encouraged to use their own knowledge and the resources of the summer school to design a novel project to either theoretically or experimentally further the themes covered at ISSAS. A social program will also be offered to make the summer school not only intellectually enriching, but also an excellent place to make new contacts and friends.
