    What is a Den ChiefJob Description:

    The den chief is an older, experienced Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, or Venturer who has been a Boy Scout

    (preferably a former Cub Scout; ideally at least First Class rank but not required), who is selected by the seniorpatrol leader and Scoutmaster / Assistant , Varsity Scout Coach, or Venturing Advisor at the request of theCubmaster / Assistant. The den chief is approved by the Cubmaster and pack committee for recommendation to

    the den leader. The den chief is registered as a youth member of a troop, team, or crew.

    These are the things you need to know and do as the den chief:

    Report to:

    The den leader for your tasks to support den and pack activities Unit Leader (troop, crew or team) for advancement counseling Den and unit leader to approve Den Chief Service Award participationDen Chief Task: A junior leader that helps fill an important role in the Cub Scout pack Assists the den leader with the meeting Helps lead (and sometimes plan) activities, games, ceremonies Sets good examples Helps Cubs to learn to be good leaders Encourage Cubs to be Webelos Encourage Webelos to be Boy ScoutsKey Knowledge:

    So, What is a Den?

    A group of boys, usually six toeight

    All about the same age or grade Typically meets once a week Den meetings generally last 60

    to 90 minutes

    Who are the Leaders?

    Den Leader: an adult in charge of the den, and plans themeeting activities

    Assistant Den Leader: an adult who helps the DenLeader and assists in planning

    Den Chief: a Boy Scout, Varsity Scout or Venturer whohelps the Den Leader conduct the den meeting, leadsand helps plan activities with the Den Leader

    Denner or Assistant Denner: members of the den whohave been elected to carry out assigned duties

    Tips on Leading Activities

    Know the song and thewords, and practice first

    Teach new songs a littlebit at a time

    Think about the type ofgames and the spaceavailable before you play

    Explain the rules of thegame and stress fairness

    Use games that help inadvancement

    For sports, make sureyou understand the sportand know the rules

    Coach players, and dontplay with them

    Always watch forfairness, especially whenchoosing sides

    Scouting, will always burn brightly. Just asAkela is ready at all times to guide the

    footsteps of you den chiefs, you, as good

    Scouts, will be guiding the Cub Scouts or

    Webelos Scouts of your den. The spirit of

    this candle will brighten the path of each ofus. By doing your job well, you are

    strengthening your pack and helping Cub

    Scouts and Webelos Scouts to grow and

    give goodwill. Through you, more boys will
