From the Editor
14 September 2014 – just four weeks to
go and it’s the 2014 Scandinavian Festival.
Celebrating the clear blue September skies and our Nordic heritage.
We’re proud that the third festival is now
well underway with more food, exciting stalls and an interesting entertainment program. Come along and spend the day
or just a couple of hours. And please tell your friends and family to come too.
The raffle prize list is growing steadily and
we want you to win: buy raffle tickets at the August café or directly from the club or
at the festival. Although all work involved with the festival is on a volunteer basis, the infrastructure costs including marquees,
stage, generators, toilets, street closure and council permits run into the thousands
before we even get started.

What’s on at the Danish Club?
Café Danmark 22 August 2014 from 6 pm Come visit Café Danmark and meet up with new and old friends. The ‘smørrebrød’ menu varies from time to time, but you’ll usually find ‘rullepølse’ (spicy rolled pork), smoked salmon, roast beef, ‘leverpostej’ and roast pork on the menu. And hot dogs. The bar offers Tuborg and Carlsberg beer varieties imported from Denmark – just now we have Tuborg Christmas Brew (‘Julebryg’) and Rød Tuborg. If you like a glass of wine with your food, we have whites, reds and sparkling by the glass. Faxe Kondi, Tuborg Super Light and Faxe non-alcoholic beer is also available. And then check out our tempting selection of Danish licorice, chocolates and other goodies! Get your delicious Danish pastries, rye bread and other specialty breads, organic biscuits and crisp breads direct from Britt’s Organic Bakery. Tea offers smallgoods and quality meats from Heinz Meats, the Danish butcher at Woolloongabba, as well as her own goodies, sometimes including remoulade. Order in advance and pick up at the café.

Rød Tuborg var Tuborgs allerførste øl til danskerne og blev brygget første gang i 1875 under navnet
Lagerøl. Senere fik øllen tilnavnet "Rød" i folkemunde og inden længe blev den aldrig kaldt andet end
Rød Tuborg. I 2002 blev Rød Tuborg taget helt ud af produktion. På opfordring fra kunder blev Rød
Tuborg relanceret i maj 2007 i anledning af Tuborgs fødselsdag
den 13. maj. Siden da har Rød Tuborg været på markedet i
maj måned for at markere Tuborgs fødselsdag.
I Rød Tuborg benyttes der 4 forskellige typer malt:
Münchenermalt (som kendes fra Tuborg Classic), pilsnermalt
samt en smule karamel og farvemalt. Disse ingredienser giver
sammen med Tuborg-gæren den karakteristiske rødbrune
farve, det rige skum og den særdeles fyldige og let sødlige
smag – præcis som i 1875. Siden 1875 har opskriften på Rød
Tuborg nemlig været den samme.

Raffle tickets for the big festival raffle
with prizes nearly hitting the $9,000 mark are on sale now – we need your
generous support again.
We were sad to hear that our member, Birte Sørensen, passed away on 11 July 2014. Birte was born on 9 March 1945 and grew up in Hjortshøj near Aarhus. In
1971, she migrated to Australia with her husband Karl. They settled in Ellen Grove where they raised their two girls. Birte worked as a seamstress in Rocklea for many
years and enjoyed making arts and crafts particularly with beads in her spare time. Birte died after a long illness and will be missed by her husband, two daughters, four
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren as well as the Danish community here.

Vores danske legegruppe mødes hver fredag i Heimdals lokaler fra 9.30 til kl 11.30.
Aldersgruppen er fra 0 til 5 år, søskende til yngre børn er selvfølgelig velkommen i ferierne.
Vi starter altid med formiddagskaffe og hjemmebagte boller, efterfølgende varierer aktiviteterne med fri leg, hoppeborg, tegning og sanglege mv. Vi skiftes til at medbringe
boller og tilbehør.
Vi betaler $2 hver gang per familie, medlemskab af Playgroup Queensland og den danske
klub Heimdal er en betingelse.

SCANDINAVIAN FESTIVAL 14 SEPTEMBER 2014
This year’s entertainment program
includes ABBALive who will take us back to the 70s and 80s with their
amazing show from 1:30 in the afternoon. Dress up as your favourite
band member or just get into the 70s and 80s groove to win a prize for
best dressed. Always dressed to look their best are
the members of the Heimdal Folk Dancing Group, who will perform
traditional Danish folk dances on the outdoor stage. KUPALEJA, a four
piece instrumental and vocal band entertains with Nordic music and
Steinar Johansen from the Nordic Fest Band plays the accordion with fest
music and songs from around the world. The Scandinavian Singers is a
mixed choir singing
songs from
the Nordic countries,
Timo Jarvela
and the Fiddle
Group, a Finnish style band with fiddles, bass and accordion, plays traditional and contemporary Finnish
music. The Baltic Choir is a mixed choir singing songs from the Baltic, the Revontulet Finnish Folk Dancers of
Canberra show Finnish and Swedish traditional folk dances. Lea Hirvela, Finnish vocalist, performs Finnish
songs and Finntune, a Finnish all male song group, performs with traditional and contemporary Finnish songs. It’s an incredible
opportunity to experience Nordic music and dance.
2014 also marks the 25th anniversary of the Baltic
Chain. On 23 August 1989, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania surprised the world by forming a human
chain demanding the independence of the Baltic States. More than a million people joined hands to
create a 600 km long human chain from the foot of Toompea in Tallinn to the foot of the Gediminas
Tower in Vilnius, crossing Riga and the River Daugava on its way, creating a synergy in the drive
for freedom that united the three countries.
