The British Fashion Councillaunches a new National Fashion & Business Saturday Club

The Fashion and Business Saturday club is a national initiative launched by the Brit-ish Fashion Council and the Sorrell Foundation, aimed at giving young people, aged 14-16, the opportunity to study fashion at their local college or university for free.

The aim of the Club is to inspire and nurture talent and provide opportunities to go on to further education in the creative industries. The colleges involved will provide expert tuition in a variety of fashion techniques, with a strong emphasis on enterprise skills. As well as attending practical weekly classes, Saturday Club members get to take part in exhibition visits, meet professionals working in the fashion industry, attend masterclasses and have their work exhibited at Somerset House in London.

Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Brighton have been involved in the pilot. Manchester has a sportswear theme including masterclasses with Nabil Nayal, a previous recipient of a BFC Education Foundation Scholarship. Brighton offers students the chance to try out fashion illustration, print design and machine sewing. The programme also included a masterclass in partnership with the Royal Opera House at their Costume Centre.

Lady Frances Sorrell said, “We are delighted about working with the BFC, a lot of young people are interested in clothing, it’s where they start their interest in creativity. The idea of the Saturday Club is to show 14-16 year olds pathways into different sides of the creative industries so they can discover new opportunities”

Amanda Hall, Costume maker and Royal Opera House Head of Workrooms, Thur-rock, “It really is important that students are open to the opportunity of what they can do, attending a session and going away having learnt something. It is also inspiring to work with young people; they look at things with fresh eyes and bring new ideas.”

Introducing Gayeon Lee

GAYEON LEE is a luxury womenswear label that suggests a sophisticated sim-plicity for confident women. Her conceptually driven collections always reveal new possibilities in textures, shapes and proportions.

Being a fashion designer seems like a glamor-ous job. What are some of the not so glamor-ous things that you have to go through, that we don’t see?My job is not simply sitting down and doing some sketches of clothing. My day is full of endless emails, Excel spreadsheets, numbers, decisions, negotiation, recruiting, and managing staff, but, at the same time, there is a need for me to create a collection with sparkling ideas. We note you have worked for various labels including Marc Jacobs. What was that expe-rience like for you and what do you think you can transfer on to the Gayeon Lee label? The skills needed to successfully manage staff, working as a team, having and maintaining a pro-fessional work ethicWhat’s one thing that always helps your cre-ative process along?Being open to new ideas, staying positive, and be-ing persistent! How would you describe the Gayeon Lee woman? The Gayeon Lee woman is sophisticated and con-fident, she dresses and expresses her life through her clothing, she has an understanding that wom-en should not dress for men, nor for other women, but for themselves. How can we keep up to date with Gayeon Lee? I will keep showing at London and Paris fashion weeks - also, my online shop will be launched soon so access to buying my collection will be easier for international customers!

Personal style is all about how you rock your cloth-ing. The greatest style is confidence. If you are con-fident in what you are wearing, then you can wear anything and look good. To me, clothes are the art form you live in. What do your clothes say about you? For example, my oversized gray shirt says I am always comfortable. I get to share unknown pieces of art with the world day-to-day. The world around me is my showroom, and I bring new pieces every day. I love to see people being comfortable and con-fident in what they bring to the showroom.

How fashion has shaped me…

I have struggled with confidence for a long time because I was bullied in middle school. Fashion has become an outlet for me. I get to express my creative mind through what I am wearing. It feels so good being able to walk out of the door and know that I look good. I started my blog as a way to express my personal opinions and fashion with others. From my blog, I have learned a lot about building friendships and living in your own skin.

How to get a foot in fashion…

People think that you need a million dollars and need to know everything about fash-ion to be a part of the fashion world. I am here to tell you “YOU DON’T HAVE TO.” All you need is passion, confidence, a willingness to learn and goals. I started my blog with Blogspot (free with Google) about a month ago. I use social media like Insta-gram and Twitter to advertise my blog. The first step into the fashion world is making friends and learning about the works of fashion through (particular magazine or print magazines or shows, etc.).

How to follow your passion…

Starting my blog I was very shy and did not honestly know what I was doing. I was scared people would not like my pictures or content. I knew that I seriously loved

16

fashion; however I was in fear that people would judge me and say “That is not a real career.” Doubts and Insecurities only slow you down. It is important in this world to have a sup-port system. For me, that is my mom; she supports me in everything I do.

How to be confident...

Dealing in fashion, you have to be confident, or people are going to walk over you. If you know your goals and have fire in your heart, no one can stop you. Blogging and fashion in general, have forced me to open up and connect with others. There are no boundaries, and you can create powerful pieces. Find your showroom and fill it with the things you love.

Young Piano plays some keys for Demur

We first saw Young Piano playing some keys to some of Kanye West’s greatest hits and im-mediately we knew we had to hunt him down and find out more. So we found him and this is what he had to share with us.

You’ve been uploading videos since 2009, what made you want to share all this talent with the world?

I was 15 years old when I created my YouTube Channel ‘YoungPianoTV’. 6 years before, I started taking classical piano lessons in my small hometown in Germany - 10.000 inhabitants.

Instead of practicing the classical songs for my lessons, I preferred to create my own compo-sitions and I found out that I have the talent to play popular songs on the piano by ear. My friends convinced me to make a YouTube Channel and because of the great feedback I had received, I was motivated and realised that you can inspire people from all over the world by sharing your talent on the Internet.

We notice you have a lot of Kanye West covers on your channel, so it’s safe to assume he is one of your favourites. If you had to collaborate with any artist dead or alive who would it be and why?

Yes, I do have quite a few Kanye West covers online. That’s because I grew listening to his music - he’s my favourite musician. He opened the doors to Hip Hop for me and besides my pure piano compositions I make my own beats with composed melodies because I love the

19

Page 20: Demur Magazine Sab Five Five

freedom of creating something new. I want to work with anyone who appreciates and feels my music the way that I do. I get my inspiration from rappers like Kanye, J Cole and Drake; I would also love to work with ambitious artists and songwriters from the pop genre. I also hope to write a film score one day, should the opportunity arise.

You play your music with no sheets. How do you choose which songs to learn and how long does it take you to perfect a song?

Exactly! I basically try to interpret every song that I like on the ivories. It only takes a few seconds to hear and learn the chord progression. After that, I practice to perfect a song and the more often I play it, the more extensive it becomes. Considering “The History of Kanye West”, I had to practice for weeks to mix the different songs into a OneTake-Medley I was satisfied with. It always depends on the goals I set myself.

With your videos receiving all this love, what is your next goal?

My next goal is to make more OneTake Piano Medleys for my YouTube Channel. I’m also trying to get in the studio with some great artists that who I can play melodies for and pro-duce music for them. I would also love to accompany rappers or singers on tour playing the keyboard reaching and inspiring as many people as possible.

You can watch Young Piano play his keys on www.youtube.com/YoungPianoTV

Al Fresco Dining with DemurWe have already seen some days of sunshine here and although we don’t know when the sun will next come out, we like to make the most of the sunny days when they are here. This month if the sun does pop out we are hoping to combine some of our favourite things, FOOD & SUN! We share with you some of the restaurants on our al fresco dining list.

Kensington Roof Gardens 99 Kensington High St, London W8 5SA

The Babylon restaurant is lo-cated on the 7th floor, 100 feet above Kensington High Street. Talk about amazing views; you have London’s skyline right in your face. The Babylon restaurant, of course also serves some kick ass, slap your momma, cocktails and food, now you see why it had to be first on our list. After your meal you can roam the Roof Gardens which are open to the public to visit free of charge. Alternatively for those of us who like to shake a leg at every given opportunity, you can party the night away at the Roof Garden’s night club.

SushisambaHeron Tower, 110 Bishopsgate, London EC2N 4AY

Ok so the benefits of dining outside are the views and the fresh air, but “great views” is perhaps an understatement for Sushisamba which is on the 38th floor in the Heron Tower skyscraper. As you go up in the elevator and the whole of London starts to appear from underneath you, you just know the views are going to be spectacular from the top. The Heron Tower already attracts many tourist and city aficionados, so you are sure to mix with a diverse crowd. Although Sushi samba serve up Sushi at its best, they also have a variety of Brazilian dishes on the menu.

As you can imagine, you will need to book in advance for a table for the dining experience. However if you are just after some drinks in town with your mates, you can just go to Sush-isamba Bar, where you don’t need to book and they also serve snacks at the bar.

Page 29: Demur Magazine Sab Five Five

The Ship41 Jews Row, London SW18 1TBThe Ship is a 1786 gastropub with a wood-burning stove, riverside terrace and outdoor barbecue kitchen. When the sun does come out and you are feeling a little hungry or you are in the mood for meeting new people, this is where you should head. Enjoy a wide selection of drinks and generous por-tions of meat from the BBQ on the roof terrace. This place has such a laid back atmosphere no wonder it at-tracts such a huge crowd.

Your meal out can easily turn into a night out once you engage with the crowds there. There are also three cabins outside under a wooden pergola with their own televisions and heaters, which can be reserved on in advance.

Aqua Kyoto5th Floor, 240 Regent St, London W1B 3BR

Aqua Kyoto is one of the capitals most exciting dining destinations, serving innovative and con-temporary Japanese cuisine at its finest. Indulge in a menu boasting beautifully presented sushi and creative hot dishes whilst enjoying the spectacular roof terrace view over Regent Street.A lowered kitchen indoors gives guests a view of the expert sushi chefs at work.

Blending traditional oriental features and ultra-slick design, Aqua Kyoto near Oxford Circus sits just 2 minutes’ walk from Oxford Circus Tube Station. As far removed from the Zen min-imalist school as it gets, Aqua Kyoto does high-end Japanese with a bit of razzmatazz. Feel the vibe as you circumnavigate the central bar, past gorgeous kimono silk-padded booths, to reach the dramatic dining room with its showpiece sunken sushi bar crowned by an oversize red lantern.

Fashion Sistas is a wom-enswear label that was started up by Rosie Per-kins after she was made redundant from her job. Whenever we hear a sto-ry that starts off like this we know it ends well, because it takes gut and determination to sacri-fice something for your dream. Fortunately Rosie has not had to look back, she is going full steam ahead and I am sure you would be to if you came 2nd at the Midlands Fashion Awards for Independent Designers in 2015 and then 1st at the Divas of Colour Awards in the same year, like Rosie did. The brand has showcased in London, Portugal, Dubai & LA Fashion Week at House of Ikons and now at Ibiza Fashion Festival.

Lumé collaborate with renowned artists from all four corners of the world, transforming their original paintings into unique prints. Each season Lumé Swimwear unveils a new exhibition of eye-catching swim and beachwear collections featuring fresh patterns and designs. “Our commitment extends beyond the creative process to include fair trade prac-tices. We believe that paying a good price for the goods we manufacture is one of the best ways we can give back to the people and communities that support our work. That’s why we also donate a portion of our proceeds to foundations that help children in Colombia, the site of our manufacturing centre.” Not only do we love their designs we absolutely are in love with their ethics.
