“Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.”

Third Sunday of Easter—April 30, 2017 Acts of the Apostles 2:14, 22-23;1 Peter 1:17-21; Luke 24:32

The disciples knew Jesus in the breaking of the bread, but first they had to come to know how he had broken

open his own life. As we still break bread in his name, so must we break open our lives.

Dear Parishioners and Guests, It takes a lifetime of doing to learn that perseverance pays off. When a task taxes our energy, takes too long, becomes more burden than joy, our human tendency is to stop doing it. We look to do something else that brings more immediate satisfaction and delight. The two dis-ciples on the road to Emmaus had given up on “Jesus the Nazarene” as the “one to redeem Israel.” They did not persevere in looking for Jesus, although they “were [still] conversing about all the tings that had occurred.” They hadn’t quite given up, but their hope was not strong enough to bring them to stay in Jerusalem to determine if Jesus truly “was alive.” Perseverance easily wavers when we are challenged beyond our capacity. The two disciples allowed their perseverance to waver; belief in a dead-but-now-alive Jesus was beyond their experience, beyond their capacity. But the risen Jesus searched them out, walked with them, broke bread with them. Their encounter led to an overwhelming transformation moving them from unbelief to belief. Further, after returning to Jerusalem, their newfound belief was confirmed by a community who attested that “The Lord has truly been raised.” We must choose this same journey today, over and over again: encounter the risen Jesus, come to deeper belief, witness to others his risen Presence. Our perseverance in proclaiming Easter Joy must grow as our belief in the risen One grows. It takes a lifetime of doing to learn that perseverance pays off. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus experience an overwhelming transformation in moving from unbelief to belief—not because of any new facts or hearsay, but because of personal encounter with the risen Jesus in this breaking open the Scriptures and the bread with them. Further, after returning to Jerusalem, their newfound belief is confirmed by a community of eyewitnesses who had seen the risen Jesus, too: “The Lord has truly been raised.” The same is true for us today: we are transformed by encountering the risen Christ in word and sacrament, and by the testimony of the community of believers. Word and sac-rament and community have the power to restore our perseverance at times of discourage-ment because they enable us to see for ourselves the new Life that is being offered us. Though we cannot see Jesus now in the same way as the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we do encounter him. We must choose to persevere in looking for him, in seeking the kind of new experiences that shake us out of our unbelief into grasping the new insight and new Life that the risen One offers. Perseverance matters!

“When receiving Holy Communion, the communicant bows his or her head before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence and receives the Body of the Lord from the minister. . . .When Holy Communion is received under both kinds, the sign of reverence is also made before re-ceiving the Precious Blood” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 160). Communion is the climax of the Mass. The Eucharist is the summit, the greatest experience of our life, and it is the source, the origin of all we do and are. It calls forth our belief in God and our service to the world. As Catho-lics, we believe that the communion we share is the sac-ramental presence of Jesus and that Christ remains with us as we go forth to love our neighbor. At God’s invita-tion we come to this table with joy, faith and reverence. As a sign of the reverence we owe this sacrament, each of us bows our head before we receive. This sign of rever-ence is similar to the bow of the head made at Mass whenever we say the name of the Trinity, Jesus, Mary or the saint being honored. It differs from the profound bow. We make a profound bow from the waist when passing by the altar. We also make a profound bow during the creed at the words “by the power of the Holy Spirit.” In the past, when approaching communion, some have made a profound bow, a head bow or a genuflection. Others have made the sign of the cross after communion. For the sake of uniformity, the custom in the United States is now a bow of the had before receiving communion. The Children's Liturgy of the Word is a program that St. Philip's offers for young families and children at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Children, preschool through first grade, are invited to step into the chapel after the Opening Prayer to hear and discuss the Gos-pel in a way which is meaningful to them and work together on an art project, play, or other type of interactive activity. The children go back to Mass after the Prayers of the Faithful. The Children's Liturgy of the Word is facilitated by parent volun-teers. All children in preschool through 1st grade are invited. Parents do not need to come, but you are welcome if you'd like. Would you like to volunteer with the Children’s Liturgy of the Word Ministry? If so, please contact Nicole McGrath at [email protected]

May 3 - St. Philip and St. James

James, Son of Alphaeus: We know nothing of this man except his name, and, of course, the fact that Jesus chose him to be one of the 12 pillars of the New Israel, his Church. He is not the James of Acts, son of Clopas, “brother” of Jesus and later bishop of Jerusalem and the traditional author of the Letter of James. James, son of Alphaeus, is also known as James the Lesser to avoid confusing him with James the son of Zebedee, also an apostle and known as James the Greater.

Philip: Philip came from the same town as Peter and Andrew, Bethsaida in Galilee. Jesus called him directly, whereupon he sought out Nathanael and told him of the “one about whom Moses wrote” (John 1:45).

Like the other apostles, Philip took a long time coming to real-ize who Jesus was. On one occasion, when Jesus saw the great multitude following him and wanted to give them food, he asked Philip where they should buy bread for the people to eat. Saint John comments, “[Jesus] said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do” (John 6:6). Philip an-swered, “Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little [bit]” (John 6:7).

John’s story is not a put-down of Philip. It was simply neces-sary for these men who were to be the foundation stones of the Church to see the clear distinction between humanity’s total helplessness apart from God and the human ability to be a bearer of divine power by God’s gift.

On another occasion, we can almost hear the exasperation in Jesus’s voice. After Thomas had complained that they did not know where Jesus was going, Jesus said, “I am the way…If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him” (John 14:6a, 7). Then Philip said, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us” (John 14:8). Enough! Jesus answered, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9a).

Possibly because Philip bore a Greek name or because he was thought to be close to Jesus, some gentile proselytes came to him and asked him to introduce them to Jesus. Philip went to Andrew, and Andrew went to Jesus. Jesus’s reply in John’s Gospel is indirect; Jesus says that now his “hour” has come, that in a short time he will give his life for Jew and gentile alike.
