Unlike yesterday's impreciseanalog and hybridautomation systems, theDeltaV system deliversprecision control, predictivemaintenance and enterpriseoptimization for better plantperformance using bi-directiondigital communication withintelligent field devices. Andthe savings are astonishing.

Footprint savingsThe notion of I/O disappears in thedigital bus environment. The “I/O”is in the field device. Cabinet andjunction box footprint issignificantly reduced, slashing yourfootprint and installation costs.

Wiring savings

All digital busses reduce yourwiring costs by providing multipledevices on a single pair of wires.Fewer wires mean less installationcosts, lower ongoing maintenancecosts, and fewer drawings to createand maintain.

Easy to add—liveAdd digital busses devices, bus seg-ments, bus interfaces, other fieldinterfaces, controllers, and work-stations, while the DeltaV systemcontinues to control your process.

Reactive vs. predictiveDigital busses range in the amountof information they can transmitbetween intelligent field devicesand digital automation systems. The amount and quality ofinformation determines whetherreactive or predictive maintenancecan be performed.

Sensor busses—AS-i bus offerslow-cost, simple installationdiscrete devices, like pushbuttons,on/off valves, and proximityswitches. Neither standarddiagnostic nor validatedinformation is automaticallyavailable.

Device busses—DeviceNet andProfibus DP typically connectmotor starters, drives, and othermore complex devices. They offersome level of diagnostics.

Limitations in the standards createextra engineering efforts by usersto take full advantage ofdiagnostics and operatinginformation.

Fieldbus—FOUNDATION fieldbusand HART provides the mostintelligence and ability to predictmaintenance problems before theyoccur. FOUNDATION fieldbus devicesprovide predictive alerts, millisecond data capture, validateddata, field-based control, diagnostics, and asset informationbi-directionally with the digitalautomation system.

Pick the best bus combination foryour application in one integratedcontroller.

Almost everyone recognizes thebenefit of connecting theproduction and automation systemswith the enterprise planning, scheduling, quality, andmaintenance software. Benefits likeefficient plants, optimized supplychains, lower direct labor costs, anddramatically reduced inventory anddelivery times. The roadblocks toachieving these logical connectionsinclude: legacy automation systems, lack of communications standards, and costly resources to develop andmaintain this connectivity.

Real-time communicationIn 1995 an effort led by EmersonProcess Management, Microsoft andIntellution resulted in thedevelopment of OPC resulting in astandard for the high speedcommunication of real-timesystems. Today this standard ismanaged by the OPC FOUNDATION,located at wwwwww..ooppccffoouunnddaattiioonn..oorrgg .

This client-server architecture hasbeen adopted worldwide.Recognizing that this standard doesnot support server-to-servercommunications, like what’sneeded to connect automationsystems together, Emersondeveloped the OPC Mirror to fill thisgap.

In keeping with Emerson’scommitment to open, interoperable standards, you canaccess a free version of thissoftware atwwwwww..eeaassyyDDeellttaaVV..ccoomm//OOPPCCMMiirrrroorr .

Between OPC and serialcommunications using Modbus, theold problem of connecting different3rd-party systems together for real-time communications has beensolved!

Event integration The OPC FOUNDATION increased its

standards scope, deliveringthe OPC Alarm and Eventspecification for theintegration of time-stamped,event information. True toform, Emerson has deliveredDeltaV OPC Alarms andEvents software for easy,standards-based integrationwith the enterprise.

The next generationA new revolution is upon us.Recently we have seen the explosionof the internet with the proliferationof data via standards such as HTTPand HTML. Widely adopted forviewing data, this standard hasfound its way into automationproducts such as the DeltaV andAMS web servers for viewingmaintenance, historical andprocess data.

The introduction of web services byMicrosoft with the standardization ofXML (eXtensible Markup Language),in their vision of enterpriseintegration, is providingtechnologies to transform ourenterprises even further. Now, 3rd-party applications canwork together via a drag-and-dropconfiguration as opposed tocomplex C/C++ programming.

22

EnterpriseOptimization

Integration has never been easier.

OPC MIrrorLite facilitates drag and dropconfiguration.

Page 25: DeltaV System Overview - Emerson Process Management

How does this help optimize yourenterprise? Now you can integrateyour production control systemreadily with the maintenance systemso the the equipment proactivelygenerates work orders. Theproduction control system deliversinventory information to suppliersfor inventory management and plantscheduling. Production scheduling isautomated, with the ERP systemdelivering production schedules andquotas to the production controlsystem: all using the same drag-and-drop interface using an off-the-shelfXML transaction engine.

Many transaction manager softwarepackages are available today such asWebMethods, BizTalk, DataJunctionand others.

BizTalk also includes software forrouting events to email, pagers, personal organizers and SMS cellphones. With XP windows, theseXML transactions can be routed in tothe Windows Messenger forintegration with yourPassport (a MicrosoftWindows XPapplication forsending youinformationwhen youneed itwhere youneed it!).
