Everybody remembershis or her first time onan airplane. For MireilleGoyer, she was 20 and ona flight from her home inFrance to Los Angeles.

The Tsawwassen pilot isthe founder and presidentof the Institute for Womenof Aviation Worldwide(iWOAW), a not-for-profitalliance fostering genderbalance in the aviationindustry by buildingawareness through initia-tives such as the upcom-ing Women of AviationWorldwide Week and Fly ItForward.

Goyer still cites hermother, who had neverflown before, as the big-gest influence for her loveof flying while growing up.

“For some odd reason,

she thought that flying wasthe coolest thing you coulddo, and never missed anopportunity to share thatwith her children,” saysGoyer.

She decided to takethings into her own handsand learned to fly whileliving in L.A., which pro-vided opportunities forquick getaways.

Eventually, in 2005,

one of those trips broughtGoyer north to whereshe now calls home,Tsawwassen.

In 2009, as March 8approached, Goyer grewanxious with the excite-ment of celebrating thecentennial of the firstfemale pilot license. However, once the daycame, Goyer discoveredthere was nothing planned

to commemorate thisgroundbreaking momentin history.

“I couldn’t let that go,”she says. “I had investedtoo much to have such amilestone for all womenlike me completelyignored by my industry.”

It inspired Goyer’svision for iWOAW.

“All we ask is not forthem to become a pilot or

become anything, but togive it a shot,” says Goyer, who looks forward toencouraging more girlsand women to try some-thing new.

While the number ofwomen employed as pilotsand aircraft mechanics isstill less than 10 per cent, the industry has seen anincrease from previousyears. iWOAW hopes tosee more opportunities aslocal airports and schoolsraise awareness.

During the Womenof Aviation WorldwideWeek fromMarch 7 to13, iWOAW is offeringscholarships and prizesfor girls and womenwho take part by flyingin a small aircraft. VisitWomenOfAviationWeek.org for more informationon events, locations andprizes.

Last summer, the federalgovernment announced$500,000 would come toDelta to help rehabilitatethe museum building.

The funding, announcedjust before the electionwas called, came from theCanada 150 CommunityInfrastructure Program.

Delta had already setaside money and had been

seeking federal grantsfor a major renovationof the century-old build-ing, which had long beendeemed unsuitable for themuseum’s needs.

The total renovation

cost is $2.5 million, so thefederal grant lowers Delta’scost to $2 million.

It doesn’t look likethe application to buildTerminal 2 at RobertsBank will have to go backto the starting line.

During last year’s fed-eral election campaign, the Liberals promised toreview and overhaul theenvironmental assess-ment process for majorprojects to restore publictrust. It wasn’t clear howthat could impact PortMetro Vancouver’s T2proposal, which had beenformally submitted lastyear after an environmen-tal impact statement was completed. That submis-

sion was to trigger a panelreview, although the clockhas “stopped ticking” onthe application as thefederal EnvironmentalAssessment Office hasrequested additional infor-mation for a second time.

Last month, CatherineMcKenna, minister ofenvironment and climatechange, and James GordonCarr, minister of naturalresources, announcedan interim approach formajor projects, which willform the first part of thegovernment’s broaderreview strategy.

One of several princi-ples will be that no projectwill be asked to return tothe starting line. Projectreviews will continue with-in the current legislativeframework under the aus-pices of relevant responsi-ble authorities.

Other principles includethe views of the publicand affected communitiesbeing sought and consid-ered, indigenous peoplebeing meaningfully con-sulted and decisions beingbased on science.

As far as when the appli-cation will get movingagain, port president andCEO Robin Silvester saidthe information requestedby the EAO will be submit-ted shortly and they’re stillwithin a general timelinewith the application andeventual construction.

“What we’re expecting isthat the panel process willbe starting in the relativelynear future. That will startwith the appointment ofthe panel and the panelbeing briefed… Overall, wefeel the process is movingforward reasonably well. It’s an important processand we’ve done a lot ofwork, but we’re in the rightplace,” he said.

Silvester noted they areanticipating a permit deci-sion by late 2017 or early2018, which will lead intoa five-year build phase.

“We’re still reallylooking at the terminalbecoming into operationby 2023, 2024, which isexactly when it’s needed interms of the projections ofdemand with the growthrate we continue to see,”he explained.

T2 would be a three-berth facility on a newman-made island adjacentto the existing Deltaportcontainer terminal.

Silvester said the planis to have two of thethree container berthsconstructed and operat-ing at the start, while thethird berth would likelybe added to the new landmass a few years later.

Port Metro Vancouverrecently released its 2015year-end statistics thatshowed a third consecu-tive year of strong cargovolumes and records setin the container, potash, grain and agricultureproduct sectors. Increasedtrade with Asia accountedfor the continued growthin cargo shipped in con-tainers, with a five per centjump in units for a recordof 3.1 million 20-foot-equivalent units, or TEUs.

“I think it would be fairto say Deltaport is nudg-ing up against capacity,so their growth may havebeen a little bit lowerbecause they’re prettyfull. But as they’re add-ing capacity with theDeltaport Road and Railproject, they’ll have roomto grow again in the nearfuture,” Silvester added.Against Port Expansiondisputes the ports rosynumbers, saying the casefor new terminals is weakto non-existent.

The federal Liberal government has pledged toreview the environmental assessment process formajor projects, but how that will impact the Terminal2 proposal at Roberts Bank is unclear.

They’re inviting you toa honky tonk good time tohelp pay off some costlylegal bills.

Residents who foughtand won a tough battleagainst radio transmis-sion towers being installedat the Tsawwassen-PointRoberts border are hold-ing a fun-filled fundraiserat the Reef Tavern in PointRoberts this Saturday.

The event, featuringvintage honky tonk andswinging country musicband The Neon Stars withspecial guests, as well asgames and a 50/50 raffle, isto help pay the huge legaltab incurred by the CrossBorder Coalition to Stopthe Radio Towers duringthe successful fight againstBBC Broadcasting Inc.

The broadcasterplanned to erect five45-metre (150-foot) steeltowers at an undevelopedlot in the Point, about300 metres from theTsawwassen border, but

residents on both sidesof the line fought theplan on several fronts.

“We had legal billsthat amounted to$250,000 US. We raised$236,000 US, so we’redown to $14,000 andpeople are saying thatdoesn’t sound so bad,but we’re saying, ‘Waita minute, that’s a lotof money. It isn’t overfor us and we’re stillon the hook,’” saidPoint Roberts residentArmene Belless, amember of the coali-tion.

Last fall, the lengthyand bitter fight againstBBC Broadcasting drewto a close when thecompany lost in SkagitCounty Superior Court.

This Saturday’s fun-draiser takes place from 6to 11 p.m. The suggesteddonation at the door is$20.

A free shuttle willbe available fromDiefenbaker Park at 6, 7and 8 p.m. with returns at10:30, 11 and 11:30 p.m. If

After years of attemptsto establish one in thecommunity, a TimHortons franchise hasinched closer to reality inLadner.

Earlier this month,Delta’s community plan-ning advisory committeesupported an applicationto build a restaurant on avacant lot adjacent to theOtter Co-Op gas station onLadner Trunk Road in EastLadner.

A month before, thecommittee voted not tosupport the application, but refinements havesince been made, includ-ing introducing up to 14interior seats and publicwashrooms. The previ-ous application was for awalk-in restaurant with aparking lot and drive-thruservice.

The committee was toldthe drive-thru queue canuse the adjacent gas bararea and that the restau-rant can handle a stackingentry area of 16 to 17 cars.

David Longprewith Southborough

Investments Ltd. toldthe Optimist a study hasshown traffic isn’t going tobe a problem for the area.

Longpre noted the siteis about 20,000 squarefeet, 3,000 square feetlarger than another TimHortons his company builtin Chilliwack and about6,000 square feet largerthan another developeris planning to build inAbbotsford.

He described the EastLadner site as “tight” dueto a B.C. Hydro right-of-way and a sanitary mainrunning through theproperty, but said the finaldesign is a good one with

proper flow for cars andaccess for service vehicles.

“We’ve redesigned thisabout three times over atwo-year period since westarted. I think everybody’spretty happy with the cur-rent layout,” he said.

Planning staff told thecommittee Delta doesn’thave a policy with respectto drive-thru restaurantsand applications are con-sidered on a case-by-casebasis.

The application hasgone back to staff and willcome forward to a Deltacouncil meeting for con-sideration of the rezoningproposal.

While most B.C. drivers are honestwhen it comes to making insuranceclaims, there are a few that arehurting things for the rest of us inthe province.

Industry studies estimate that about10 to 20 per cent of all insuranceclaims contain an element of fraudor exaggeration. Applying thoseestimates here means fraud iscosting us up to $600 million peryear, or more than $100 annually onevery auto insurance policy.Fraud cheats everyone and comes inall shapes and sizes.

Some fraud is organized andorchestrated by a group of individuals, namely, staged accidents and stolenvehicle rings.

Other types of fraud are lessobvious. Fraud like this includesexaggerating the extent of an injury, misrepresenting a previous medicalcondition or slanting the situationwhen reporting a claim. Its notunheard of for people to embellish

their claim by including vehicledamage unrelated to the crash, or toclaim they cant work when theyreactually back on the job. These tacticsmay not make the news, but the costsadd up and come out of all of ourpockets we all end up paying forthose who cheat the system.

ICBC combats fraud with their SpecialInvestigation Unit, which last yearlooked at more than 5,000 claimsHles. This includes a cyber unitthat employs information publiclyavailable on the internet and socialmedia to investigate suspectedfraudulent claims. Theyre in theprocess of increasing their focus oninvestigations, including trainingand analytics technology that Gagspatterns and predictors of fraud.

By stepping up efforts to reducefraudulent and exaggerated claims, along with managing injury claimscosts, ICBC is working to takepressure off rising insurance rates.

Fraud. It cheats us all.

It wasn’t a big crowd buta steady stream of peopleshowed up last Thursdayafternoon to see whatcould be the final devel-opment proposal by MKDelta Lands.

The open house at theDelta Town & Country Innwas an opportunity for thepublic to learn more aboutthe company’s applica-tion to rezone a propertynear the Burns Bog desig-nated protection area forindustrial uses, a plan thatwould settle, once and forall, the future of its landholdings in the area.

“You know, land devel-opment is an interestingprofession,” said companypresident Joanne Barnett.“You go through the pro-cess. You deal with whatyou find. You make surethat all of the technicalissues are resolved. Andthen you are dealing withthe appetite of the com-munity and see how youcan get them to appreciatethe value of it. This one isa much easier discussionwith the community.”MK Delta Lands had

been working on a majorhousing and commercial

proposal for years, com-ing up with several ver-sions, only to face oppo-sition from North Deltaresidents. Located on theeast side of Highway 91between 64th and 72ndavenues, the last proposalincluded 450 townhomesand up to 650 condos aswell as commercial areawith a grocery store.

The newest applica-tion is for industrial on asite west of Highway 91and part of the proposalincludes transferring allthe company’s other landholdings in the area, whichtotals 132.7 hectares (328acres), to the Corporationof Delta for conservation. It means MK Delta willcompletely abandon anylucrative housing schemes.

The latest plan to cometo Delta council thisspring is to build 2.2 mil-lion square feet of indus-trial space on a 62-hectare(155-acre) parcel locatedadjacent to the Highway91 Connector (NordelWay) and the South FraserPerimeter Road. Oncelandscaping and bufferingare completed, about 45hectares (112 acres) willhave industrial buildings.

The company, which isalso offering several mil-lion dollars to Delta foramenities and agriculturalirrigation improvements, says the site is ideallylocated for logistics or dis-tribution centres due toits proximity to Deltaportand Fraser Surrey Docks,Tilbury industrial area,

the CN Rail terminal,Vancouver InternationalAirport and the U.S. bor-der.

The property, zonedindustrial but still withinthe Agricultural LandReserve, would be devel-oped into several serviceparcels that would even-tually be subdivided intolots between 3.6 and 10hectares (nine to 25 acres)in size. The buildingswould be between 300,000to 400,000 square feet. Anoverpass would be built toaccess the site.

MK Delta Landsdescribes the proposal asa “win-win” for everyone, including Delta, whichwould receive $3.5 millionin annual tax revenue.

Not surprisingly, theBurns Bog ConservationSociety is lobbying againstthe proposal, saying pro-jects such as this are dan-gerous to the natural bogenvironment.

Bog society presidentEliza Olson, who was atThursday’s open house, said a bad deal was madewhen 200 hectares (500acres) of important bogland was left out in amajor multi-governmentpurchase over a decadeago.

The final chapter of the radiotowers saga will play outthis Saturday night in PointRoberts. That’s when mem-bers of the Cross Border

Coalition to Stop the Radio Towerswill gather at the Reef Tavern in a dualpurpose event — part victory party andpart retire-the-debt fundraiser.

If you don’t have plans Saturday, youshould really consider dropping by theparty to throw 20 bucks into the hatand thank the folks that prevented whatcould have been a most unwelcomeintrusion into the community. You owethem at least that much.

The idea of locating AM radio anten-nas on the doorstep of a communitywith almost 25,000 residents seemsabsurd (to say nothing of potentiallydangerous and undoubtedly annoying),but thanks to jurisdictional issues com-plicated by an international border, itcould well have happened if it weren’tfor the efforts of a dedicated few.

A group of folks on both sides of theline has spent the better part of threeyears, as well as somewhere in theneighbourhood of a quarter of a millionU.S. greenbacks, fighting the good fight, eventually besting the radio station atboth the political and judicial levels.

Their victory benefits everyone inPoint Roberts and Tsawwassen bypreventing radio waves from wreakinghavoc with household electronics likehas been the case in the Washingtonstate community of Ferndale where thetowers currently reside. Trust me whenI say you don’t want to experiencewhat the people of Ferndale have beenforced to endure.

There’s also mounting medical evi-dence with regard to the detrimentalhealth effects of AM radio waves, so it’sreassuring to know we’ve dodged thatbullet as well.

The ruling in Skagit County SuperiorCourt was an unequivocal victory, butthere’s still a catch when it comes tothe campaign that got us to this point:several coalition members guaranteedpayment of legal bills that have an out-standing balance of $14,000 US.

It would be unfair in the extreme tohave those that have done so much forpeople on both sides of the border tobe left holding the bag at the end of allof this.

Thankfully, that doesn’t have to bethe case and you can help ensure thatdoesn’t happen by showing your appre-ciation this Saturday night.

Sayingthanks

We have lived inSouth Delta for38 years. Thoughtof moving oncewhen I oversaw

community papers stretch-ing from Surrey to Chilliwack.Thought it would involve lessdriving if we moved to, say, SouthSurrey.

It never happened, however.Probably more due to procrasti-nation than anything else. Alsowe had soon launched the SouthDelta Today and had acquired aninterest in the Richmond News,so relocating no longer seemedso beneficial, especially with twoyoung kids.

The positive attributes of SouthDelta are legion. Ladner andTsawwassen have a small townfeel while being in proximity to allthe benefits of a large metropolis. The Agricultural Land Reserverestricted growth and develop-ment outside of the establishedresidential communities.

The slowing growth in the areabegan an inexorable decline ofthe commercial districts. Themalls were showing more vacan-cies, the bowling alley shut down, the movie theatre disappeared.

After decades of somnolence, more attention is now being paidto South Delta. Like the rest of theLower Mainland, prices for singlefamily homes are skyrocketing. Infact, last month South Delta hadthe highest percentage increaseyear over year, a 37 per cent

increase in the valuation of thebenchmark price for single familyresidences.

There has been much debateover the lack of affordability ofhomes in Metro Vancouver, butit is a simple case of supply anddemand. Due to Vancouver’samenities (who doesn’t loverain?), people want to live here, but due to government policies, supply is limited. Locally, one hasonly to look at the Southlands.Good development or not, it hasbeen 30 years since the first planto develop housing was tabled. Itis still “farmland.”

Repeat this result across theLower Mainland and it is easyto see what the result has been.Supply has been restricted fromcoming on the market. You don’tneed an A+ in Economics 101 torealize that holding back on sup-ply while demand ramps up isgoing to cause prices to be bid up.

In addition, due to the oil and

gas slowdown and actions inOttawa, we have put property forsale on the international market.Non-Canadians are most likely tobe investing American dollars —and in terms of American dollars,we have put property in Canadaon sale through the diminish-ing value of the Canadian dollar. The same property that wouldhave cost $1 million US two yearsago can now be had for less than$750,000 US since you can nowpurchase a Canadian dollar forunder 75 cents US. Lower price, more demand. Hence the cur-rent land rush mentality in MetroVancouver.

So how will prices survivewhen and if oil prices climb andthe Canadian dollar starts tostrengthen vis-à-vis the Americandollar? I would anticipate thebubble to deflate but South Deltawill fare better than most areas.

As well as being a great com-munity to raise a family, it is closeto the airport and ferry terminal, access to the beach, relative easyaccess to Point Roberts and themarina. Also soon to come, newmalls and a 10-lane bridge toremove the one knock on thecommunity — the rush hourcommute.

So the big prices may stall, butdon’t fret if you miss it, you willstill be in one of the best commu-nities possible.Tom Siba is an ex-publisher

Editor:Re: Delta voices concernsover pipeline impacts,

Feb. 2Trans Mountain is not

considering Deltaportas a “fallback option” forour proposed expansionproject, as your recent arti-cle suggested. We firmlybelieve that expanding ourexisting dock facilities inBurnaby is the best andsafest option.

The Trans MountainExpansion Project recentlycompleted the most com-prehensive regulatoryreview process in the his-tory of the National EnergyBoard. The hearing hasconcluded and the boardwill issue its recommenda-tion onMay 20.

Our application clearlyoutlines our plan toexpand the WestridgeMarine Terminal. Webelieve that is the optimallocation and we are notconsidering alternativeoptions.

Before we submittedour application, we evalu-ated a number of potentialmarine locations on theWest Coast, includingRoberts Bank. Our evalu-

ation deter-mined theselocations wereless favourabledue to a num-ber of factors, including envi-ronmental,technical andeconomic con-siderations.There is alsoan existing,well-estab-lished marinesafety systemin place forvessels goingto and fromWestridge.

Trans Mountainbelieves the safety of ourcoastline is paramount. We’ve been safely loadingvessels with petroleumproducts for 60 years with-out a single spill from atanker.

About 6,000 large com-mercial vessels transitthrough the Salish Seaeach year, and of those600 are tankers. Todayour Westridge MarineTerminal in Burnabyserves about five tank-ers per month, and if ourproject is approved this

could increase to up to 34tankers per month. In real-ity, we’re only part of theexisting tanker traffic, andour expansion proposesthe same sized vessels, shipping the same prod-ucts as we do today.

We share the valueBritish Columbians placeon the environment andsafety, and we clearlyunderstand the concernsraised about increases intanker traffic. That’s whywe’re proposing additionalmeasures that will furtherimprove safety for theentire marine shippingindustry — because spill

response is about all thevessels using our water-ways.

This includes a $100million investment inWestern Canada MarineResponse Corporationto fund new equipment, employ 100 new peo-ple and create five newresponse bases along theshipping route — one ofwhich is planned for theDeltaport area. This willdouble the spill responsecapabilities along thetanker route and cut man-dated response times inhalf.

The Trans Mountain

team is committed toearning your trust andconfidence. For more thanfour years, we’ve beenconsulting with communi-ties along the proposedroute and implementingprograms to address theconcerns we’ve heard. But,there is still more workto do. We’ll continue towork with communities,

Aboriginal groups and oursafety partners to supportcollaborative efforts toenhance safety and protectour environment.

I encourage you to learnmore about our Project atwww.transmountain.com.

a week in the “observa-tion area” of the ER atDelta Hospital. On theWednesday and theFriday of that week Iwas transferred to RoyalColumbian Hospital inNewWestminster for a“heart catheterization.”The rest of my days werespent reading and relaxingon the observation ward.

This letter is to acknowl-edge the care, considera-tion and concern takenby all of the doctors andnurses that work in the

observation area, espe-cially the nurses that for12-hour shifts attendto every aspect of theirpatients’ concerns. Someof these patients were suf-fering with dementia andthe nurses provided themwith extra care and reas-surance.

I do not know whatthe hourly rate of pay isfor these nurses, but I doknow they work very hardfor every penny they earn. These nurses are a creditto their hospital for theservice they provide.

Editor:Re: Sunnier days aheadnow Conservatives aregone, letter to the editor,

Feb. 26Democracy, it’s been

said, is the state of affairsin which you consentto the government mis-spending your money, andelecting the best man todo it.

Without JustinTrudeau’s “sunny days”being based on solid eco-

nomic data to make sounddecisions on massivegovernment infrastructuredeficit spending, we willreturn to the not so “sunnydays” of the elder Trudeauwho from a comfortablebudget surplus chalkedup deficit after deficit tothe point the InternationalMonetary Fund took aserious look at Canada as apotential bankrupt.

Here is what FDR’sTreasury Secretary HenryMorgenthau, Jr. ruefullystated in May, 1939: “Weare spending more moneythan we ever spent beforeand it does not work ... wehave just as much unem-ployment as when westarted and an enormousdebt to boot.”

It was Milton Friedmanwho once observed:“There is nothing so per-manent as a temporarygovernment program.”

As if that isn’t enough, there’s John Kenneth

Galbraith adding “insult”to economic “injury” whenhe observed: “You willfind that the governmentis the kind of organizationwhich, though it does bigthings badly, does smallthings badly too.”

But former U.S. presi-dent Ronald Reaganperhaps said it best: “Thenine most terrifying wordsin the English languageare, ‘I’m from the gov-ernment and I’m here tohelp.’”

If the “sunny” Liberalpromise of “real change” isto have any real meaning, the message to all sectorsof Canadian industry mustbe to face up to the eco-nomic reality of moderni-zation and capital invest-ment constituting theonly reliable foundationfor productivity improve-ments, sustained profit-able growth and interna-tional competitiveness.

Editor:Re: Sunnier days aheadnow Conservatives aregone, letter to the editor,

Feb. 26I read Darren Garbutt’s

letter and pondered those“sunny days” ahead, hav-ing first considered whatthis Liberal government ispromising.

Particularly disturb-ing is restoring citizen-ship to a former terrorist

whose plans includedsetting explosives off inParliament and behead-ing then-prime ministerStephen Harper. Garbuttdoes not hold Harper inhigh esteem, but I hopehe’s not so callous as towish Harper so cruel afate. Had Justin Trudeaubeen prime minister then,he doubtless would havebeen subject to a similarfate.

Nevertheless, Trudeauconsiders the man worthyof Canadian citizenship. What may we expect fromone so hostile towardCanada now he has beengranted Canadian citizen-ship? This seems so muchTrudeau’s attitude towardthe ISIL threat, that gentlediplomacy is better thanmilitary action.

Along with massivebudget deficits, we canexpect potential terror-ists to be roaming aboutCanada.

With unemployment atseven per cent, and likelyto increase, we are receiv-ing a flood of refugees, who will receive generousfinancial support as theyincrease the growing num-ber of unemployed, butthese are “sunny days,” asGarbutt reminds us.

If these are the “sunnydays,” I dread to thinkwhat the rainy days will belike.

If I started up a girlband, it would not becalled the Swingalings. Wewould not be called theGo-Go Gals. We would notbe called the Tra-La-Las.

We would be something,oh, entirely in keepingwith the times. You know, like Grey Moon Timez. Orthe Whisker Perch 3. OrSpandex Fortune.

Why not, I say? Today, apparently, anything goes.Today, let’s face it, Maroon5 and The BarenakedLadies are decidedlypassé.

A recent check-in withthe Grammys demon-strates those old monikersof the past — think DaveClark Five or the SteveMiller Band or the AllmanBrothers — are about asold school as you can get.Hey, why name yourselfafter one of your bandmembers when you couldbe, oh, Slipknot or HighlySuspect?

Up for the big prizewas MyMorning Jacket, which I gather is not tobe confused with MyAfternoon Trenchcoat or

My Nightime Pyjamas. Then there was Death

Cab for Cutie. No ideawhere this one came from, but it makes me want tobypass a taxi in favour ofa bus.

Numbers are also reallybig in band names thesedays. We’ve had Four FriedChickens and a Coke, for instance, which I’mthinking plays a decidedlyunhealthy genre of music, and 4 Out of 5 Doctors, which has me wonder-ing what the fifth personmight happen to be. A doggroomer, maybe? A Latindance teacher?

Not to be outdone in the

I-don’t-get-it departmentis the British band TheThe. Now I don’t knowabout you, but this onestrikes me as completelyoff the wall.

If I ever get my girl bandtogether, it might be calledWired West or ToolbarTrophy Four, but I simplycannot imagine it beingcalled This This.

I like RadioactiveSquirrels, but that one’salso been taken, as hasMary Carves the Chicken.(I suppose, however, thatI could always do a vari-ation of this one. MaybeCathy Makes the Bed? OrLaura Folds the Laundry?)

Today, for crying outloud, something like theAlan Parsons Projectwould never make thecut — not when we haveChildren of the VendingMachine and The StringCheese Incident.

Coming from a fifth-generationfarming family Danielle and AliciaGuichon understand the importance ofsupporting and buying local produce. In 2001, beginning as theyoungest vendors at theLadner Village Market andcarrying only 6-10 items, they eventually took theirbusiness to the roadsideof Arthur Drive. On ArthurDrive, the girls built astrong following and bothpoint out that “consumerswant to support the farmersfrom the community in which theylive.” Once the girls realized that thecommunity had a strong desire to buyDelta grown crops, while in season, theidea for ‘Backroads’ bloomed.

Moving forward a few years, the wantand need for ‘buying local’ is still asstrong as ever. With the opening oftheir produce store, Backroads FamilyFarm Market, which now carriesover 100 items, the focus remains on

supporting local. The Guichon familybuilt and operated this stand from1980-1989, before turning their focusto expanding their farm. Danielle and

I would like to send out a very sincere, heart felt thank you to each kindperson who has helped me through mychallenging year since my diagnosis ofbreast cancer last July.

Some of these kind people I have beenfortunate to have knownfor a while. Some I maymeet only once, but youhave been wonderfullyencouraging and aninspiration to me. Mysincere apologies to thoseI have not been able tohelp this year.

As a housecall veterinarian, Imeet exceptionally kind and thoughtfulpeople through their great love fortheir pets. This previous experience, and the kindness I have received, hasimpressed on me the importance ofbeing kind, and loving, to yourself andothers, (and of course our dear pets),at every opportunity, every day.

Please take time for your regularhealth checks and ask for tests.Early cancer detection can be all thedifference in your longevity, andbetween a minor procedure and amajor or long treatment.

I am also learning aboutthe healing power of loveand positive living, (suchas in Dr. Bernie S. Siegel’sbook, “Love, Medicineand Miracles”) as I makehappiness, peace in mylife, and protecting myhealth my BIG priorities,

EVERY day.

I am deeply grateful to each of youwho have been so kind and supportive.I am expecting to return to work inlate 2016. Please check my website andfacebook for updates. In the meantime, take time for yourself and those youlove, & take care of your health. ■

KRISTINE IRVINGOWNER, THE URBAN RACK

Certified Life CoachIf I asked all of the amazing women inthis section what they had to sacrificein order to run their businessessuccessfully, I wonder what they wouldsay. Maybe time with family, financialsecurity, vacations, or personal health...would be among the answers. And atthe risk of offending any hard-working,dedicated entrepreneurs I also wonderif we sometimes wear a few of these asa badge of honour. Toiling away 24/7means we are completely dedicated, right?Working hard is the only way tosucceed, right?...man, I hope not.

When I toil away like that and sacrificethe things in my life that are mostimportant to me I start toquestion what the heck itis I’m dedicated to.I clearly remember thedays when I was workingdawn till dusk but nevergetting any furtherfinancially and watchingmy health and personalrelationships suffer.Wow, so this is the dream hey? Notfor me thank you. It was at that timeI was working towards my coachingcertificates and doing lots of coach-ystuff. One of my favourite exercises wascreating a Vision Board. I started rippingphotos and articles out of magazinesthat represented what I wanted in mylife. And for each vision I would outlinea plan of action to get there. I wouldevaluate my daily tasks and ask myself ifthis was getting me closer to my dream,or further away. I honestly didn’t imaginethese images on a board becoming a

reality but slowly many did. It’s like timeopened up and I found myself enjoyingactivities I never thought I could whileowning my own business. And thenother things just seemed to show upalmost magically (like horses...but that’sanother story).

In less than a week I will honour the sandand surf on my vision board as I head offto Australia for almost a whole month.Something I never thought possible.I’m sharing this not to be an annoyingshow off but with the message that ifyou aren’t living your dream...what’sstopping you? For me it all started with

questioning the belief that Icouldn’t leave my businessfor longer than a week (whomade this rule??) and thenmaking choices each day toget me closer to my vision ofa month in Australia. The bestchoice of course was hiringthe MOST amazing team ofwomen who will hold downthe fort while I’m gone (thank

you Rackstars!). There isn’t a dreamthat’s come true for me that hasn’tinvolved a solid support system. Thiswas another valuable lesson...I can’t doit on my own. If you are toiling away andtired of it, wondering what the first stepis to get you closer to your dream (ormaybe you don’t even know what thatdream is)...give me a call. It’s no charge tohave a chat and see if I might be able tohelp. www.coachki.com.

Just over 20 years ago I very anxiouslywalked into my first day at law school. Inever would have guessed that 20 yearslater I would be married, have two childrenand be working as a lawyer in South Delta,a community which I stillrefer to as my home. As afemale professional it’s asclose to “having it all” asI could have imagined.

Our office, which includesmy dad John Eastwood,a notary public, offers avariety of services - realestate conveyancing, wills, powers of attorney, representationagreements, advance directives, andcorporate law, but by far the mostrewarding part of my practice is workingwith individuals to guide them through theprobate or estate administration process.

The probate or estate administrationprocess sadly begins upon the loss of aloved one and no matter how much oneprepares in advance both for the loss and

the estate planning it is never enough.Compounding the grief is the thanklessjob of being appointed an executor. Thefirst question that we hear is “do I haveto probate the estate?” Whether an

estate must be probated isdetermined by the agencyor financial institutionthat holds the asset. Forexample, the land titleoffice will require an estateto be probated where realproperty is held in the

name of the deceased alone.Once one asset is subject to

probate, all other assets (withsome exceptions) owned by the deceasedat the date of death, will be subject toprobate. If you hire our office to assistyou through the process, our averageinvoice is approximately $2500-$3500 plusdisbursement. We offer free half hourconsultations. Please do not hesitate tocontact us to assist you during thisdifficult time. ■

MICHAELA COLLUNEYCO-OWNER, BODY ENGINEERED

Functional Movement Training Inc.As a former Triple Jumper and CanadianNational Team Hurdler, RegisteredKinesiologist, Therapist and NationallyCertified Coach Michaela Colluney developsrehabilitation and physical training strategiesfor individuals of all ages and abilities. “Myexperience as an athlete, therapist and coachgives me a unique skill set, perspective andkeen insight towards the needs of my clients. It enables me to implement and manageprogressive, efficient and effectivetraining programs.

Michaela’s definitive approach has helpedclients overcome pain, acute or chronic injury,as well as resolving athletic performance issuesand improving performance.

Michaela will assess you using a ranking andgrading system that documents movementpatterns that are key to normalfunction. By screening thesepatterns, she readily identifiesfunctional limitations andasymmetries. These are issuesthat can reduce the body’sability to heal itself as well asreduce the effects of functionaltraining, physical conditioningand distorted body awareness.

This systematic approach andscoring system is used to target problems andtrack progress. Michaela can then determinethe most beneficial corrective exercisesto restore mechanically sound movementpatterns. Restoring proper movement reducespain or discomfort, increases strength andimproves overall function.

This approach is used at every level of fitnessfrom rehabilitation to the professional worldclass level. Every professional sports teamin North America uses this approach tomanage injury and maintain athlete’s optimalperformance and you can use it to meet yourgoals as well.

Assessment is a crucial tool to determine

where the client is now in terms of physicalhealth and capacity. No longer is theobligatory skin fold body compositionmeasurement, weight measurement andbike or treadmill fitness test adequate. Theyare useless in determining what activitiesare best suited for you or if you should bepursuing certain activities at all. A full physicalassessment will determine your starting pointand help you realize measurable realisticoutcomes and the most direct route toreaching them. If you do not know whereyou are how can you figure out where youare going? Michaela is currently running thefollowing programs for all individuals. Formore information about these programs or foran personal assessment please contact us.

Kids On Track; fundamentalmovement camps for childrenaged 6-12. Emphasis on FUN!Providing the tools for childrento learn fundamental running, jumping and throwing movementskills that help to acquire a strongfoundation for success in all othersports and physical activities.

Ashley Mortensen:Ashley grew up in a house that was always in some stageof renovation or re-model. She found herself inspired andfascinated by the world of interior design and the beauty oftransforming homes. After years of working in the insuranceindustry, Ashley decided to follow her artistic instinct andmoved to Vancouver where she enrolledin the Interior Design Program at BCIT.

Carmel Beckman:Carmel’s love for design and constructionstarted at a young age. In high school, she discovered her love for business.Which led to her work for a local CreditUnion and study financial managementat BCIT. Over ten years ago, Carmelstarted investing in residential real estateby flipping homes. It was during theseprojects that she discovered her love andknack for interior design.

Carmel enrolled in the Interior Design Program at BCIT topursue her dream of becoming a designer. As a designer, shebrings to the table almost 14 years of financial managementexperience and over a decade of construction managementexperience. She works closely with her clients to make surenot only that their renovation falls within their expectationsbut also within their budget.

“Over the years I have had the pleasure of selling homes thathave been designed and staged by Carmel Beckman. I alwaysloved the design choices she made which led to an easy sale

but also sparked the desire to renovated my own homebecause I always loved the choices she had made. When itfinally came time for changes in our home, I was excitedto contact Beckman Design & Co to help with the process. Her attention to detail (or perfection) was appreciated. Shemet with our tile and wood work installers at our house

as well as meeting me to choose cabinetsand counters in-store. Last but notleast, Carmel kept me within budget(surprisingly under budget) with herfabulous contractor discounts! I wouldnot hesitate to recommend BeckmanDesign & Co both professionally andpersonally.”Monica, Realtor, Surrey BC

“The idea of hiring a designer tohelp me with my newly-purchased

2200 sq. foot townhouse was daunting,to say the least. Although I was apprehensive, I was alsoquite excited to get started. Not only did Carmel understandexactly what I wanted, she was able to capture the “feel”I wanted for the space. In addition, Carmel was great atsticking to my budget and was available to me when I hadquestions or needed advice. Most importantly, however,Carmel made the project fun for me and was alwaysreassuring. It would be my pleasure to work with her againin the future and she is highly recommended!”Polly, Delta, BC ■

Community

The current school-yearhas been a particularlyexciting one for students, staff and parents at EnglishBluff Elementary inTsawwassen.

“My kids are thrilledand are so excited to be apart of it,” said ChristineYoung, a parent of two stu-dents at the school.

Young is referringto the InternationalBaccalaureate (IB)Primary Years Programmethat is now taking place atthe school.

Last school year, theentire school communitycame together to inves-tigate the idea of an IBprogram, an internationaleducational frameworktaught at more than 4,000schools worldwide. It wasestablished in 1968 andis renowned for its aca-demic rigour and focus onstudents’ overall personaldevelopment.

After much research, the school commu-nity overwhelminglyagreed to become an IBschool. Throughout thisschool year, English BluffElementary has been in itscandidacy phase where ithas begun to implementthe IB teaching frame-work.

Students learn the B.C.curriculum, but they learnit in a framework that con-nects learning to global

and current realities, whilepersonalizing learningby allowing students toinquire deeply into theirinterests.

“To have the globalperspective is a great giftto give to the children andfamilies of our communi-ty,” said Young. “The con-nection to current eventsgives the kids ‘ah-ha’moments in their learn-ing. These real-life con-nections have been reallypowerful for my children.”

Teachers at the schoolhave embraced planningand teaching through anIB framework, said teacherToshi Carleton Gaines. The IB model encour-ages teacher collaborationand promotes teachingand learning that is cross-curricular and interdisci-plinary.

“The approach isstudent-centered andexemplifies best practice,”she said. “Students areencouraged to develop anatural curiosity throughmeaningful inquiry thatspurs critical thinking, communication and self-reflection skills.”

The IB program atEnglish Bluff is open toany student from kinder-garten to Grade 7, regard-less of where they live. Toregister, parents shouldcontact that school at 604-943-0201.

IceHawkscompleteupsetDelta takes out defending PJHL champs for first playoff serieswin in three yearsMARK BOOTHmbooth@delta-opt imist .com

The Delta Ice Hawks scram-bling to find additional homegame dates at this time of yearcan mean only one thing. Theyare moving on in the PacificJunior Hockey League playoffs.A 3-0 game six victory on

Sunday night in Ladner gave theIce Hawks a 4-2 series win overthe defending champion NorthVancouver Wolf Pack. It marksthe first time Delta has advancedin the playoffs since the 2012-13season.The Tom Shaw Conference

final series against the GrandviewSteelers begins on Wednesdaynight (7:15 p.m.) at the BurnabyWinter Club. As of press timeTuesday afternoon, only gametwo on Sunday (4 p.m.) back inBurnaby had been confirmed. It’s believed game three will

be in Ladner next Tuesday at7:30 p.m., although the Ice Hawksneed to secure at least one moreadditional home date in the best-of-seven series.Delta stunned the defending

champs by jumping out to a com-manding 3-0 series lead beforethe Wolf Pack battled back to wina pair, including a 7-6 triumphin North Vancouver on Saturdaynight.Game six was similar to Delta’s

5-0 win in the series openerexpect, this time, the hosts did alltheir damage in the final period. After a big penalty kill when

Delta Wild affiliate Nick Wilsonwas accessed a five-minute majorand a gamemisconduct for goalieinterference, Michael Rand brokethe scoreless deadlock when hewired home a power play goal atthe 4:32 mark of the period.Captain Quinten Wideski would

then add a big insurance markerthanks to some terrific workby affiliate Isaac Embree. The17-year-old Delta Wild call-upwasn’t done yet, setting up DanielRubin less than two minutes laterto seal the outcome.Jacob Latrace picked up his sec-

ond shutout of the series, making22 saves. The third-year Seafairproduct came into the playoffswith no shutouts in his juniorcareer — a span of 68 games. The Ice Hawks entered the

post-season ranked eighth in the10-team league defensively, sur-rendering four goals per game.Yet, they held the PJHL’s highestscoring team to just 15 over sixgames. Latrace was a big part ofthat but so was the team’s overalldefensive play and the work ofnew head coach Darren Naylor.“I knew this team was under-

achieving,” said Naylor who took

over the coaching reigns justthree weeks ago with one regularseason game remaining. “I saidto them from the first game on ‘Iknow you guys can score goalsbut you’re not keeping them out.’We kind of put in a real simplesystem.“The guys bought into it the

first three games then we kindof got off track in games fourand five. We shut the door againtonight and are moving on. Thatis a good veteran team over thereand the fact we went up 3-0 wasawesome because it gave us achance to do what we did today.Technically, it could have been

a 2-2 series as our goalie kind ofstole game three for us.”Naylor said he was well

aware of the Ice Hawks’ per-sonnel before agreeing to step-ping behind the bench. He wasoriginally going to come onboardwhenWes Mussio purchasedthe club last fall but was spend-ing many nights at the hospitalwith his ailing mother before shepassed away.“I watched a lot of games and

knew this team was underachiev-ing,” he added. “When I had todraw up the roster for this seriesand realized the talent that wouldbe sitting out, I knew what kind ofdepth this team had.”Icing…- The Steelers are coming off

a six game series win against theRichmond Sockeyes.- Grandview won five of the six

regular season meetings. The IceHawks avoided a sweep by win-ning the final game 9-6 back onJanuary 16.- Wilson was supsended two

games for his goalie interferencemajor.Jacob Latracemakes one of his 22 saves for the game 6 shutout.
