The Liberals’ effort totake back Delta South innext year’s provincial elec-tion is taking shape as asecond high-profile candi-date has now been giventhe green light to run forthe nomination.

Former Delta policechief Jim Cessford’s appli-cation to have his nameon the ballot when localLiberals select their can-didate has been approved, creating what’s now anintriguing race with Deltacouncil member IanPaton.

Cessford and Paton arethe only two, so far, to haveput their names forward, but having two so-called“name” candidates is anindication the party likesits chances next Mayagainst two-term incum-bent independent VickiHuntington.

Delta South LiberalRiding Associationpresident Kelly Guichon, who recently told theOptimist there is a senseof optimism among localLiberals, said a nomina-tion meeting date stillhas to be set by the party. She noted that meetingwill likely be held in latesummer or early fall at theearliest.

Those who want to voteat the meeting have to bea paid member for a mini-mum of 28 days. Membersas young as 14 can vote atthat meeting.

As for Cessford, in apress release last week, the longtime former Deltatop cop who retired lastyear, said he believes thekey to future success is tocontinue the B.C. Liberals’effective track record onthe economy.

“Residents of DeltaSouth can count on me tobe a strong advocate forthe issues that matter tothem. My career has been

built on dealing with thetough stuff head on. Voterscan trust me to remainfocused on the needs ofthe people of our commu-nity and to be their voice. It makes a big differenceto how effective you canbe when you really listenand understand their indi-vidual concerns are just asimportant as the big head-line issues.”

Cessford, who remainsactive in the community, will square off against athree-term councillor inPaton, who in a recentinterview talked abouthow he would be a strong

advocate on Delta issues,including farmland.

Paton also talked aboutthe importance of hav-ing someone representthe riding within govern-ment. It’s a similar mes-sage conveyed by previousLiberal candidates BruceMcDonald in 2013 andWally Oppal in 2009.

The upcoming nomina-tion meeting looks to bethe most intriguing sinceone at the South DeltaRecreation Centre backin 1999. Well-respectedMLA Fred Gingell diedearlier that year, so theLiberals were forced to

find a replacement in whatturned out to be a hotlycontested, six-person race.Val Roddick emerged fromthat nomination processand followed that up withexpected by-election andgeneral electoral triumphs. She was MLA until retiringin 2009.

Whichever candidateemerges this time aroundwill then have to square offagainst Huntington, whoconfirmed she will seek athird term.

The NDP has yet toannounce any potentialcandidates or nominationmeeting.

CONTINUED from Page 1“Certainly we’re very

open to suggestions, as wealways are, and particu-larly if it’s a benefit for ourcommunity, our peopleand our tax base. That’scertainly the positive side, but we’re going to have tolook at other aspects too. It’s a big step and we’relooking forward to havingthat discussion,” Jacksontold theOptimist.

A spokesperson for theTFN said it would also

review BCLC’s invitation. It’s not the first time

there’s been talk of acasino coming to the TFN.That talk seems certainto heat up once more asthe First Nation’s majordestination mall complexis set to open this October. The TFN does have ampleland to build a hotel/casino complex, and itsfirst post-treaty land useplan did identify land for“hotel/tourism” develop-ment. Any proposal with a

gaming company, though, would likely have to go tothe entire membership fora vote.

Three years ago, theTFN was eyed, but notformally approached, asa potential location for a$100 million casino afterSurrey council rejected aproposal. Gateway Casinoshad been looking to builda 60,000-square-footcasino, 200-room hoteland a 27,000-square-footconvention centre.

CONTINUED from Page 1“We are pleased that

there has been a responseto our ongoing advocacy,”said Dixon.

“This announcementhelps to recognize theongoing funding needsof our district. Districtstaff and the trustees willbe looking at how to bestutilize the funds in ourcommitment to being aleading district for innova-tive teaching and learnersuccess.”

The funding, for now, isa one-time thing.

School districts wereinstructed last year to findadministrative savings, something that irked theDelta school board, whichclaimed its administra-tion was already lean andefficient.

The B.C. Teachers’Federation said the fund-ing announcement showsthe government is feelingthe pressure to restoreeducation funding.

When you get multiple“name” candidatesseeking a nomination,it’s typically a signalthe party in question

has an excellent chance of winning theupcoming election. In these instances, the real battle is often for the candi-dacy, with the actual election more of aforegone conclusion.

Think back to 1999 when, after thedeath of MLA Fred Gingell, the provin-cial Liberals had to select a candidateat a nomination meeting that was solarge the fire marshal insisted it be heldout back of the South Delta RecreationCentre. Val Roddick emerged victoriousfrom that fray and easily retained theseat for the Liberals in the subsequentby-election.

It was a similar scenario in 2012when the federal Conservatives neededa replacement for popular MP JohnCummins, who had turned his atten-tion to provincial politics after 18 yearsin Ottawa. Kerry-Lynne Findlay won acontentious nomination and ended upbesting her predecessor’s impressivepopular vote total in the ensuing gen-eral election.

When a party doesn’t control theriding, or doesn’t necessarily stand agood chance of winning the seat, theopposite usually holds true — its list ofpotential candidates shrinks consider-ably and doesn’t normally include any-one with a significant public profile.

That pattern is being challenged thistime around as the provincial Liberalshave two prominent members of thecommunity — Delta council memberIan Paton and retired police chief JimCessford — vying to carry the party’sbanner in Delta South in next spring’selection. The winner of the nomina-tion, however, won’t be in line for aslam dunk come the general election. In fact, they’ll face quite the challengeas history-making independent VickiHuntington announced recently sheintends to seek a third term next May.

Huntington has already vanquishedtwo “name” Liberal candidates so it’snot unreasonable to think she could doso again, although it should be notedthis riding was represented by a Liberalfrom 1991 to 2009, and by Socreds priorto that, so right wing ties run deep.

Paton and Cessford will need thatsupport if one of them is to becomeDelta South’s next MLA, but in order toget there, they’ll have to win two bat-tles, not just one.

Battleof‘names’

In 1964, my parents movedback to Vancouver aftermy dad finished school inToronto. They lived withmy grandparents for a little

while and were able to save somemoney and borrow a little to buya house just down the lane on43rd Avenue in Kerrisdale.

They paid $16,000 for a simpleCraftsman-style home on a 66-by-120-foot lot. It is the last olderhome on the block. All of theother ones have since been soldand torn down for newer digs. Mymom still lives there and enjoysthe amenities of the community.

Many years ago, the council ofthe day in Vancouver changed thezoning on part of the west side sohomes could be built on 33-footwide lots. I can remember therewas some criticism of the moveway back when. As it turned out,the zoning change went rightdown the middle of 43rd Avenue.Homes on the north side of thestreet could be built on 33-footlots while the south side of thestreet kept 66-foot lots.

Back then, all the north sidehomes were torn down so morehomes could be built. This didn’thappen all at once, but there wasalways new building going on,and the kids that lived on thestreet always had a constructionsite to play on. I recall we builtour share of forts with comman-

deered lumber scraps. Not much has changed in that

area since then, although thepressure is mounting. Our hum-ble family home is now a coupleof million dollar tear down. Acouple of blocks away there isa $6-million home that is beingdemolished so that some offshoreinvestor can build his vision ofthe Vancouver dream.

There are lots of vacant housesin this neighbourhood. My momwill occasionally see ownersat the residences. Not for longthough. She saw one of themrecently and exchanged pleas-antries. She thought it interestingthat the sighting was in early May,right at census time.

Last week, Dr. Paul Kershawwas on the radio talking about“Generation Squeeze” and the“Code Red” campaign that notes

that housing prices are out ofreach and out of control. Hesaid it now takes over 20 yearsfor the average home buyer tosave enough for a down paymentin this brutal housing market.Generation Squeeze tells usthat money and equity is overlyowned by the 50-plus set and thatpeople in their 20s, 30s and 40sare trapped in a housing crisisvoid.

I am very concerned that mydaughter will not have the chanceto live in her own community ifshe wants too. In South Delta, andparticularly Tsawwassen, housingstock is old and tired for the mostpart. “Affordability” is little morethan a notion. Out here we are athree-sided island and there is lit-tle wiggle room remaining to keepour community vibrant with anappropriate mix of generations.

I support the ALR, farmersand farming, but I think the ruralurban edge needs to be carefullyconsidered for housing opportu-nities. I also believe our governorsneed to consider amendments tothe OCP to afford densification inand around the town centres ofour communities.Mike Schneider is founder of

Project Pickle and likes to writeabout growing, cooking and eat-ing food. He was named as aJamie Oliver Food Revolutionambassador.

Editor:Some distance from

where I live there is aseries of dogwood treesthat are now in full bloom, and they are a glorioussight. I walked past themthe other day and the flow-ers, symmetrical and pro-lific, form a blanket thatalmost hides the greenleaves that nourish them.

It was a drizzly morningand the white petals shim-mered and trembled withthe slightest movementof the air. I paused andreflected on the beautythat surrounds us.

Whether aided by the

hand of man, or on itsown, at this time of theyear nature seems to tapus on the shoulder andsay, “Look around you, seethe miracle that unfoldsbefore your eyes, life is allaround you and you arepart of it.”

Those flowers andbushes and trees that ourneighbours so lovinglynurture form an extend-ed canvas that is savouredon those long peacefulwalks. What a lovely placeto be, and what a timelyreminder to us of whatthings could be for a worldtoo often pummeled by

greed, oppression andcruelty.

We live on a rock — no,a jewel — that is hurtlingthrough space tethered toa star that gives us warmthand light. We are fortunateto say, as we gaze aroundus, near and far, this is ourhome, our Earth, and weare connected to it.

On Delta’s crest are thewords, “Ours to preserveby hand and heart.” Thisbeautiful combination ofsimple words is a mantranot just for our commu-nity, but for the wholeplanet.

It’s great to be so closeto a mailbox and to haveour friendly mail carri-ers right across the street.Although the large mail

trucks with their air brakesdo come rather early(yawn) and stop out frontto unlock the gate, thuswaking us up, we werenot surprised by this, andexpect that over time wewill become used to thisfamiliar yet necessarynoise.

What we are surprisedat though is the constantstream of late night, intoxicated loiterers. ThisCanada Post property is

like a magnet for these latenight “rubies” and theiridiotic conversations, cell-phone chatter and evendrug use and sexual inter-actions.

While some of theseantics are (at times) enter-taining to listen to andwatch, mostly it is becom-ing tiresome and we wouldappreciate it if these losersfind another place to con-gregate.

I dropped by theGeorge Massey TunnelReplacement Project officeon Steveston Highway thisweek. This office has cop-ies of many documents

The official on duty wasvery helpful and quicklyproduced relevant projectdata.

The current pile drivingis part of the geotechnicaltesting program necessaryfor lifetime integrity of thefoundations for the new

I hope similar diligencegoes into design for theminimization of trafficnoise for those who livealong its corridors when itopens.

Editor:Re: Balance needed: port

CEO, May 27Robin Silvester, CEO

of the Port of Vancouver, claims the three core com-ponents to create balanceare economic prosperitythrough trade, healthyenvironment and thrivingcommunities.

In terms of local envi-ronment, the balance waslost years ago and we arenow left with less than20 per cent of the riverand estuary habitats thatexisted 100 years ago. Thecumulative effects of portand industrial develop-ment in the Fraser estuary, together with the acceler-ating loss of agriculturalland throughout the Fraserdelta, have put the survivalof international migratory

bird populations at criticalrisk, and caused popula-tion declines of manyother fish and wildlife, including Fraser salmon, and endangered southernresident orcas.

In terms of economicprosperity through trade,Silvester claims the needfor a second container ter-minal at Roberts Bank dueto a growth of 30 milliontonnes of cargo handledby the Port of Vancouverover the past five years. In fact, the port handledan increase of 24 milliontonnes between 2008 and2015. Of that 24-milliontonne increase, 13 millionwas coal, five million waswheat and two millionwas potash. So why do weneed a new container ter-minal?

The only growth inthe container business isfor U.S.-bound contain-ers. Canadian taxpayersare paying billions forGateway bridges, roadsand rail to funnel U.S.containers and U.S. dirtycoal through the Port ofVancouver. This is a hugenet loss for taxpayers.

Since 2008, Port ofVancouver net income hasincreased 15 per cent peryear, assets eight per centper year and managementsalaries 11 per cent peryear. At the same time, tonnage has increased lessthan three per cent peryear.

Silvester repeats hismantra that the portneeds more land. Thisis because the Port ofVancouver is no longer

about trade efficiencies. It is about land acquisi-tions and business spin-offs. Do we really want touse B.C.’s best farmlandand scarce industrialproperties to store emptycontainers? About 10 percent of the containers arefor the Metro Vancouverarea. Seventy-three percent are for back east orthe U.S.

If Transport Canadawants to create truebalanced and sustain-able trade, Minister MarcGarneau would resumeresponsibility for B.C.ports and ensure that theports of Prince Rupert,Vancouver and Ashcroftwork cooperatively in thepublic interest, not forvested interests.

a call from someone

purported to be from theCanada Revenue Agencydemanding payment of

back tax owing. This individual, with a

very East Indian accent, was very threatening, say-ing unless back taxes werepaid we would be goingto jail.

Either her husband orlawyer must call 855-979-6557 immediately.

Knowing this was ascam and an attemptto extort money, wecalled the Delta PoliceDepartment to file acomplaint. The answerreceived was not what weexpected.

We were told they didnot take these complaintsand we had to call someagency back east.

It is interesting to goon the Internet and findpolice departments likethe one in Calgary areinvestigating these com-plaints yet our own policedepartment could virtuallycare less.

The next story willlikely be the elderly Deltaresident who fell for thescam and sent money asthey were unaware of thisscam as the Delta PoliceDepartment could not bebothered to do anything towarn the public.

Whatever happened toDelta Police Department’smotto of “no call toosmall?”

Editor:Re: MLA not ready toretire, May 20

I found it very timelyyou would run an articleon our independent MLAalong with the challengerslining up to face her nextyear.

Timely because recentlyVicki Huntington broughtan idea to the floor of thelegislature that was meantto allow more work to bedone in the time allottedwhen the legislature is insession. The idea was tolimit the amount of timespent on applause andverbal cat calls, etc. thatpermeates daily activity.

When she rose toread her suggestion, themembers of both partiesapplauded and jeeredthrough her entire presen-tation so the idea couldn’tbe heard. I guess whenyou have worked hard in

the 74 days the govern-ment was in session dur-ing 2015, you don’t wantanyone telling you therejust might be a way to getmore done. What arro-gance.

Also in March of thisyear the legislature brokeinto verbiage, usually asso-ciated with a pre-fight dis-cussion in a bar, betweenthe Liberal mines min-ister and an NDP critic.Immature and uncalledfor.

Then there was theincredible “Elbowgate”that the media investigat-ed in depth from Ottawa.More of childish partypolitics at its best.

Provincially or federally, this is not government, this is groups of individu-als elected to a positionwith no experience, nopriorities, limited capabili-ties and fewmanners, who

have pledged allegianceto their political party, and not the people whoelected them.

They show a completedisregard for taxpayers’money, perform wellbelow anything that wouldbe accepted in privateindustry and show nointerest in the concerns ofthe public they represent.

So when you reportthat people are lining upto challenge Huntingtonin 2017 it only says tome that these challeng-ers would be in Victoriato represent the Liberalsor the NDP and I believethe last thing South Deltaneeds is an MLA that isjust a party representative. With Huntington we havean honest MLA that onlyanswers to the people ofSouth Delta.

I find it really refreshingwhat Bernie Sanders and

Donald Trump are doingto the elite of party politicsin the United States.

Decades of waste, mismanagement, poorjudgment and creativeaccounting on all sides ofgovernment have createddebt that our great grand-children will still be pay-ing, and we have very littleto show for all that moneyspent.

I’m sure Huntington’schallengers will be wellknown people in the com-munity, but no matter howgood they are or what theyhave done, in Victoria theywould simply be anotherLiberal or NDP readingfrom the party playbook.

So I’ll stay withHuntington who is free toexpress her thoughts, andis more than happy tolisten to my concerns as aSouth Delta taxpayer.

There as so many amaz-ing church, school andcommunity events, tiedinto arts and music, forresidents of South Delta toenjoy.

So often it comes downto a choice of attendingone over the option ofmany others.

It really is such a bless-ing of cultural richnessthat we should be thank-ful for and never take forgranted.

To attend and enjoy anarts or music event offersmany direct benefits likeencouraging and liftingour spirits; celebrating andengaging the creative workof friends and neighbours;inspiring our own possiblylatent gifts into creativeexpression; allowing us tosupport vital community

causes; and can even offeror trigger the possibilityof transformation in ourthoughts, actions andbeliefs.

While these kindof events are offeredthroughout the year, itseems like the spring and

early summer are filledwith abundant possibili-ties.

While I really do wishto encourage your attend-ance at such events, and Iam fully aware that familyperformance involvementis a strong priority draw, Ido extend an open invita-tion to you to celebratelocal artists as they showtheir work at TsawwassenUnited Church’s fourthannual TransformationArt Fair Weekend: The Artof All Ages, today throughSunday, featuring theSDSS Art Students/SeniorsPortrait Project and MegNeufeld, creative arts facil-itator of Alongside You, asour guest speaker.

Queen Victoria musthave been a pretty savvywoman.

Sure, she had good advi-sors, but ultimately, onDec. 31, 1857, it was upto the 38-year-old Queento pick the capital of theEmpire’s colony. Ottawa,a hinterland city that stillheld pig races in its muddystreets, seemed an oddchoice. It was far awayfrom the colony’s maincities, Quebec City andMontreal in what was thencalled Canada East, andKingston and Toronto inCanada West.

But with the RideauCanal serving as a vitaltransportation link, lotsof forest to protect it frompossible American inva-sion, a tactical hilltoplocation overlooking theOttawa River and, mostimportantly, strategi-cally placed between theFrench and English speak-ing populations, the des-ignated city quickly grewinto its vision as a capital.

As I checked intoOttawa’s castle-likeFairmont Chateau Laurier,

I found myself thinkingabout the Queen quite abit. Given the royal sur-roundings and the viewof Parliament Hill, I wassure she would have beenimpressed.

It was October when Ivisited. I had come to visitHanna, my late friend’s18-year-old daughter. Iwanted to give her a breakfrom her residency life atthe University of Ottawa.Besides, it was time for thenext generation to learnthe art of living well.

Saturday morninglooked like a perfect dayfor a bike ride. We went tothe front desk with a bicy-cle rental brochure wherethe young woman gentlyremoved the brochurefrommy hand. “I’ll call thevalet to bring up the com-plimentary bikes.”

Soon, we were wheel-ing our lovely white BMWbikes along the canal path.

The leaves were flamesof crimson, pumpkin andgold, swirling and crackingin the stiff winds that gust-ed off the canal. Brieflythe skies darkened andgritty snow spun aroundour heads and then, just asquickly, it changed back to

bright clouds and sun.At Dows Lake we turned

back to the hotel. It wastime, as I’m sure theQueen would have agreed, for high tea.

Our table was near thewindow. Overlooking thebundled pedestrians onthe street belowmade ourspot all the more com-forting. The server camewith the large tea trolley. Finally, we made our deci-sions. Hanna chose theapricot and peach blend. Ipicked my favourite scentof bergamot. Soon I wassipping the Fairmont’sown special Earl Greyblend.

The three-tiered traysarrived. Truffled eggsalad sandwiches, lightly-smoked ham and brie, salmon pinwheels… thetiny sandwiches started toadd up. Then we moved tothe upper tray; salted-car-amel chocolate tart, poppyseed cake, the crusty soft-ness of a macaroon.

Groaning, we finallyquit. After all, we wereplanning on attending thePoutine Fest on SparksStreet that night.

The weekend went bytoo fast. There was shop-

ping, the National ArtGallery, the Parliamenttour, the Byward Market, art galleries and thefoot-tapping gospelSunday brunch at FatboysSmokehouse.

But we both agreed thatit was Saturday night’s din-ner that topped the chart. At first I had been skep-tical at the restaurant’sconcept. Mexican andAsian cuisine? It soundedgimmicky with a great

potential for disaster, butit had come highly recom-mended.

The halibut in the fishtaco starter was crispedin a thin skiff of tempurabatter and placed on softthin pancakes. I considermyself a fish taco aficio-nado, and these were thebest I’ve ever tasted. Thesashimi outdid the tacos, the green papaya saladtopped the sashimi andwhen I tucked into the jas-

mine rice and butter currylobster, I nearly cried.

Life, like stormyweather, can knock yousideways. So when thoseskies clear, do yourself afavour…spend a little timeliving like royalty.

14 million Canadians participate in recreational boating. Canadians who head out in any type of boat

should have the appropriate knowledge to help them have a safe day on the water.

There are five boating safety messages that relate to the most common boating related accidents:1. The importance of wearing a lifejacket or PFD - PFD’s are now stylish, comfortable and practical,

and are available for all ages and various aquatic activities. Remember, when boating, PFD’s have to be

Department of Transport-approved in orange, yellow or red.

2. The dangers associated with drinking and boating. Think Before You Drink - Too much alcohol impairs

your ability to think and operate your boat safety. The legal consequences are as serious for operating your

boat under the influence as they are for driving your car in a drunken manner.

3. The importance of taking a safe boating course - Be Boat Smart... and operate your boat in an educated

manner this summer - take a boating course.

4. Ensuring that you and your vessel are prepared before casting off. Don’t Overload - Do not load your

boat beyond its capacity. The capacity plate is on every small boat and was put there by the manufacturer for

your safety. If your boat looks overloaded, it probably is.

5. The risks associated with a fall into cold water. Hypothermia, caused by cold water, is an insidious killer

thought to be responsible for half of all boating deaths. Hypothermia, which is the loss of body temperature,

kills people in cold water by reducing their ability to swim or stay afloat. A person in cold water can

eventually die of cardiac arrest if he is not rescued and rewarmed. If the hands are kept out of the water,

they will stay warmer during the ordeal.

Planning AheadA death in the family can be emotionally devastating

and financially burdensome, we understand how difficultand sensitive this topic can be, but struggling at the timeof a death with the details can create more anxiety andstress for those left behind. Take a little time to preparenow while you can discuss funeral options, costs andflexible payment plans.

Whatever your reason may be, pre-planning is alogical decision. No one is eager to reach the day oftheir funeral, but taking control of the inevitable andorganizing your final wishes is simply the right thingto do for yourself and your family. We understand howdifficult and sensitive this topic can be, so take the firststep to providing peace of mind to you and your familynow. Prevent over-spending and give your loved onesthe opportunity to remember you how you want to beremembered!

Getting started is easy, simply call and speak to one ofour pre-need counsellors, we can help make pre-planningyour funeral easy, we do it every day.

First MemorialFuneral Serviceshas been servingfamilies in thecommunity for50 years

The prearranged funeral is an opportunity to carefullyplan for an orderly conclusion of life. Whether you want atrue Celebration or something more traditional. It is not adifficult or complicated task and it can give you and yourfamily peace of mind. It can eliminate some of the anxietywhich can accompany a death.

Simply, prearranging is a practical way of determiningan individual’s wishes for a Celebration in advance. Theprearranged funeral provides the opportunity to decide thetype of services preferred and outline instructions for finalarrangements.

If you are planning your own funeral, prearrangement canalso serve as a guide to family and friends. That foresightcan be invaluable in a time of stress. In advance of need, youand your family can discuss together, decide together and acttogether, on what will meet everyone’s needs, with regardsthe type of Celebration you wish to have.

Celebrations/funerals can be prearrange and can be doneat the funeral home or in the convenience of your own home,if you prefer.

We will be offering a 10% discount on anypre-arrangement completed before August 31, 2016.Please phone the funeral home at 604-589-2559 formore information.

How are Teeth in One Day(All-on-4 implants)

different from traditional dentures?

All-on-4 dental implants are a permanentset of teeth that look and feel like yournatural teeth. They are teeth that will bebrushed and cleaned like natural teeth. They do not have to be taken out. They donot need adhesives. They are comfortablebecause they do not press down on yourgums.

All-on-4 implants allow you to experiencethe hot and cold of your food, as well asthe taste because the palate is not coveredby a plate. They also allow you to bite withincreased force (up to 70% more), so youcan eat all of your favorite foods again!

for the players to savourbeing national champs. They were back in actionthis past weekend at theprovincial champion-ships in Richmond wherethe team finished secondto Kelowna in the U19Division. The All-StarsYouth included anotherSouth Delta player —Douglas Jameson.

Since the Kelowna ros-ter featured mainly Grade12 players, the Okanagansquad will be representingB.C. in the U20 Division atthe 2017 Nationals whileAll-Stars will be compet-ing in the U18 flight. The boys turned their

A pair of South Delta softball standoutscapped outstanding freshman seasonsby helping the Douglas College Royalsfinish second at the Northwest AthleticConference Championships inPortland.

The Royals headed southseeded fourth and would relyheavily on the play of Ladnerpitcher Keeley Ainge andTsawwassen infielder TaylorWoodward.

Douglas opened champion-ships with a pair of wins, includ-ing a 2-0 triumph over Spokanethat saw Ainge pitch a two-hitshutout.

The Royals moved on to faceNo. 1 seed Bellevue, a team theyhad split four regular seasonmeetings with. Ainge was perfectthrough four innings as her teamraced out to a 6-0 lead. Bellevuefinally got a pair of runs in thesixth and seventh innings butit was much too late in a 9-4Douglas win.

The result kept the Royals inthe winner’s bracket and set-up a show-down with the lone other unbeaten team—Mt Hood.

A terrific battle saw Douglas trailing 3-2in the seventh when Delta Heat alumniDanielle Villio clutched up to hit her first

collegiate home run and send the gameinto extra innings. The Royals took a 4-3lead in the top of the eight but Mt. Hoodgot to Ainge for a pair of runs in its half of

the inning for a 5-4 win.The loss sent Douglas to the

loser’s bracket and a rematchwith Bellevue. Woodward led theoffence with a pair of hits, threeRBIs and two of runs while Aingewent the distance again in an 8-6victory.

The Royals would need tobeat Mt Hood twice to becomechampions but three errors and

only five hits resulted in a 7-2 lossto end a memorable campaign.Ainge was named to the All-Tournament Team after workingan amazing 39.3 innings of the43 the Royals played over sixgames. She finished with a 4-2record and a 2.69 era.

Earlier, she was named a FirstTeam Conference All-Star thanksto a 21-7 regular season recordthat included 3.24 ERA, whilestriking out 101.

Woodward was not only a First TeamConference selection but was also thelone Douglas player named to the NFCA/NWAC All-American Team. Softball B.C.’s2015 Minor Player of the Year batted .484with four home runs and 51 RBI.

OUR CLIENTS ARE TALKING!I am delighted to take this opportunity to commend Remax Pro Realty Group, and two of its Realtors in particular.

My recent experience with selling my home and purchasing a new residence was very exciting and, as always, somewhat stressful. However, it was not fraught with suspense, disappointment, and frustration as it well could have been. For this, I would like togive heartfelt and sincere thanks to my realtors, Aileen Nogeur and Joanne Evans.

This is not my first time working with these realtors, and not the first time I have been impressed with their professionalism, expertise, and most importantly, genuine caring attitude. I highly recommend this team to anyone seeking to buy or sell a homein South Delta.

SEE WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYINGABOUT US THIS WEEK

“Working with the Chancey’s on our sale this Spring was a great experience. Their inside knowledge ofthe Ladner Market was a key to the overall success of the sale. Most important to us though was that thecommunication was clear, we were always understood and never had to ask for anything twice or felt anypressure. I already have and certainly recommend the Chancey team”- Rob in Ladner

“Thank you so much Linda! Bob and you have gone above and beyond (as always!). Diane and I reallyappreciate all you have done for us.”Best Regards,Brian, Tsawwassen

“When I decided to list my house I remembered so many examples, good and bad, of others’ experiences inselling their homes. There is a common denominator for success, the Agent. A good Agent sells and a not sogood Agent sits and waits. The Chanceys are not sitters, they are SELLERS. I chose them because of theirexperience, knowledge and achievements in the Real Estate industry. There are few people who can keep upto their professionalism, determination and commitment to their clients. The results were phenomenal.Thank you. The Chanceys will always be my first recommendation in Real Estate.”

FITZPATRICK - VivianAugust 14th, 1923-May 28th, 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to ourbeloved mother, Vivian Fitzpatrick. Our cherishedMother passed away peacefully at home onSaturday, May 28th, 2016. Vivian is survived by hersons, Bob (Marilou), Terry (Elizabeth), daughtersKerry, Maureen (Gary), Paddy, and Erin (Terry), aswell as grandchildren - Steven, David, Aaron (Lana),Sean, Shannon, Terri, (Michael) Candace, Jordan(Morgan), Justin, Rennie, Keenan (Bri), Konnar(Chris), great grandchild Kaelan and her sister JoanJohnson in San Francisco. She was predeceasedby the love of her life Bob, daughters Shannon andKelly, son-in-law John Munro. Vivian and Bob raisedtheir children in Vancouver and later Tsawwassen. Our home was always filled with love, laughter andhappiness, we could not have asked for more! Boband Viv took annual trips every summer, piling all ofus in the car to head up to Wood Lake for vacation. We all have wonderful memories of those times andas you can imagine many humorous escapades! They later had annual trips to Maui, and cherishedtheir time there, especially when children andgrandchildren were lucky to be able to join them. The “Fitzpatricks” have arrived was a well knownannouncement. Mom was often referred to inTsawwassen as the well dressed classy lady. Notonly did she have style, she carried herself with suchgrace, especially with her blindness, she nevercomplained to anyone! Until her eyesight failed, shewas very social and active in her community andalways looked forward to meeting her friends andthe “boys” at Petra’s. She was an avid sports fanand was often called by her children andgrandchildren to get a recap of a certain game orher thoughts on a questionable call by a referee! Atrue testament of how special she was - she was aconfidant to her grandchildren in their love life andfuture aspirations and goals....she will always be ourspecial “Grandma Cloud”. Thank you to Dr. Hollingerfor his compassionate care during mom’s final days.A very heartfelt thank you to Nanette, mom’s faithfulcompanion/caregiver who never left mom’s side tothe very end. Her children cannot express howmuch it meant to know mom had such special careand love. We will treasure her memory andprofoundly miss our dear beautiful Vivian. In lieu offlowers, donations to Cystic Fibrosis would beappreciated. A celebration of Vivian’s life will be heldat Sacred Heart Parish in Ladner on Thursday, June16 at 11:00. A reception will follow at the Royal OaksSocial room, 1100 56th Street, Tsawwassen.
