A Tsawwassen family isonce again feeling a senseof relief after the man con-victed of murdering six ofits members decided towaive his right to a parolehearing.

David Ennis was up forparole again this year but

recently elected to forgoa hearing. He has beenbehind bars since the early1980s after admitting tokilling six members of onefamily on a camping tripin Wells Gray Park in B.C.’sinterior in the summer of1982.

Shelley Boden and herfamily have made thetrip to Bowden, Alberta,

which is just south of RedDeer, for Ennis’ previousparole hearings. He wasfirst denied parole in 2008and then again in 2012. Hepreviously waived his rightto a hearing in 2014 andif he doesn’t change hismind before July, he won’tbe eligible for parole againuntil July 2021.

“We don’t know why he

has, but we don’t care,”said Boden, adding familymembers are relieved theydon’t have to go throughanother parole hearing forseveral years.

Ennis, who was knownas David Shearing at thetime, stalked the familybefore shooting Boden’saunt and uncle, Bob andJackie Johnson, and Jackie

Johnson’s parents, Georgeand Edith Bentley. He keptthe Johnsons’ two daugh-ters, Janet, 13, and Karen,11, alive for several daysand sexually assaultedthe two girls before killingthem as well.

He pleaded guiltyalmost two years afterthe slayings and was sen-tenced to life in prison.

Delta HospitalFoundation recentlyannounced a gift of$100,000 from the DeltaFirefighters CharitableSociety. In recognitionof this gift, a room in thePeter C. and ElizabethToigo Diagnostic ServicesBuilding will be namedthe Delta FirefightersRadiography Room.

Delta firefighters arelong-time supporters ofDelta Hospital, contribut-ing over $400,000 since1994. Their support hasoften extended to thefoundation’s signatureevents, including theannual golf tournamentand Moonlight Gala, through generous spon-sorship, the provision ofauction items and in pro-viding event day volunteersupport.

“The Delta FirefightersCharitable Society is sucha generous supporter ofDelta Hospital,” says LisaHoglund, the foundation’s

individual giving manager.“Delta firefighters alreadydo so much through theservice they provide toour community, so it isextremely humbling toreceive this gift that willcome directly from theirmembers’ pay cheques.”

The Delta FirefightersCharitable Society is 100

per cent volunteer run andorganized, with the partic-ipation of all 170 firefight-ers in Delta. Firefightersdonate their own timeto take part in barbecuefundraisers at events andcharitable donation drives,as well as organizing theirannual Harvest Festival.

Additionally, three years

ago the society introduceda new payroll giving initia-tive, with members mak-ing their own charitablecontributions directly fromtheir pay cheques towardsspecific fundraising ini-tiatives, as chosen by themembers.

“This gift from thefirefighters of Delta dem-

onstrates an unwaveringcommitment to the well-being of our community, beyond the services theythemselves provide,” saysVeronica Carroll, the hos-pital foundation’s execu-tive director.

“With this donation toDelta Hospital, our fire-fighters will have invested

over $2 million into ourcommunity through ourfundraising endeavoursand our own personal giv-ing,” says Delta FirefightersCharitable Society directorBen Lewis.

Lewis says putting thisprogram in place to allowfirefighters to donatemoney from their own paycheques to the ongoingcare of patients at DeltaHospital is a tremendousopportunity to serve thecitizens of Delta outsidetheir professional duties.

In the wider commu-nity, the society has sup-ported over 130 groupsand organizations, as wellas individual recipientssuffering frommedical orfinancial hardships.

Its last major dona-tion was gifted to the B.C.Professional Fire FightersAssociation Burn FundCentre, to improve ser-vices available to burn andtrauma survivors and theirfamilies.

Heart health should be a concern for people of all ages, but especially so for menand women over 50. But heart disease does not have to be an accepted byproductof aging. For example, a 2014 study published in the AHA journal Circulation foundthat maintaining or increasing physical activity after age 65 can improve the heart’swell-being and lower risk of heart attack. In addition to increasing physical activity as they age, older men and women whounderstand heart disease and learn to recognize its symptoms have a greaterchance of minimizing its affects and lowering their risk of having a heart attack. How can I protect my heart?Heart healthy habits take some effort, but men and women can protect their heartsregardless of their ages.

• Get sufficient exercise. At least 30 minutes of exercise per day can protectagainst disease.

• Quit smoking. Smoking increases your risk for a host of ailments, includingheart disease. Quitting is a great way to start getting your heart and other partsof your body back on track.

• Include heart-healthy foods in your diet. A diet that is rich in fruits andvegetables and low in cholesterol, salt and saturated fat promotes heart health.

• Don’t drink alcohol to excess. Like smoking, drinking alcohol to excess canlead to a host of problems, such as high blood pressure, arrhythmia and highcholesterol, each of which increases your risk of heart disease.

• Lose weight. Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for heart disease. If you have already started to exercise daily and eat a more heart-healthy diet, then you’re on your way to losing weight. Consult your physician if diet andexercise don’t seem to be helping you to shed pounds.

Heart disease kills millions of people across the globe each year, many of whomare over 50. But men and women who learn about heart disease and how to reducetheir risk stand a far greater chance of fighting the disease.

Keep your heart running strong

Ladner is losing a prom-inent local business that’sclosing after more thantwo decades.

Owned by the Ramjifamily, the abc CountryRestaurant on LadnerTrunk Road is shutting itsdoors for good tomorrowafter serving the commu-nity for the last quarter-century.

“It’s been a joy to lookafter the communities ofLadner and Tsawwassenfor the last 25 years,” saidAli Ramji. “But for eco-nomic reasons, the timecame when we had to saygoodbye.”

The family is maintain-ing its other location inRichmond.

Identifiable by the largered tractor outside, therestaurant has becomemore than just a place toget something to eat. It’sbecome a meeting placefor many in the commu-nity.

Ramji said the restau-rant has received muchlove, warmth and carefrom the community sinceword of the pending clo-sure has spread aroundtown, with many custom-

ers stopping by with cards, gifts and kind words forthe staff.

“We have really enjoyedtremendous loyalty, dedi-cation and commitmentfrom staff over the years,”he said.

They just won’t give up.

It’s no secret that somemayors in the LowerMainland aren’t big fans ofthe provincial government’s

decision to replace the aging GeorgeMassey Tunnel with a 10-lane bridge, but it’s about time they stopped play-ing games with what is undeniably anoverdue upgrade to our transportationsystem.

Metro Vancouver recently askedVictoria for a two-month delay onbridge planning so it has sufficient timeto assess the impacts of the plannedcrossing. Given the Metro board isdominated by Vancouver and Surrey, and due to the fact both of those cities, among others, have voiced objectionsto the bridge, it’s getting increasinglydifficult to take Metro Vancouver tooseriously on this file. Not surprisingly,Victoria didn’t heed the request.

When you say you don’t like a pro-ject, and suggest money earmarked forit should be spent elsewhere, it kind ofcolours the input you then offer on saidproject. And I’m sure it can be chalkedup to sheer coincidence that the tran-sit wish list that was soundly defeatedby voters in last year’s plebiscite hadventures in Vancouver and Surrey as itstwo biggest ticket items.

That’s not to say there aren’t legiti-mate issues with the bridge. Questionsabound on everything from whethermore blacktop is the answer to ourtraffic woes to the process from whichan ultimate decision was made to howmuch influence the shipping industryhas wielded. There are $3.5 billionworth of questions about this massiveundertaking, so I’m not suggestingMetro Vancouver’s concerns are with-out merit.

But even if the regional level of gov-ernment has valid technical issues, it’shard to get past all the noise it’s beenmaking and hard not to look at thegriping as anything but sour grapes.Several Metro mayors don’t think thebridge is a good idea and, althoughthey haven’t verbalized as much, theirstand suggests they don’t really care toomuch about the thousands of commut-ers stuck in the congestion created bythe antiquated tube on a daily basis.

I fully admit I’m biased because Ilive out here, and I’m quite willing toacknowledge that one bridge won’tsolve all our transportation ills, but it’simpossible to deny that an upgradedcrossing is long overdue.

Bridgebashers

As a youngster alongwith family, I used toattend potluck din-ners at the LadnerUnited Church. Now

on the board of trustees of theDelta Museum and Archives Ihad the pleasure of attending itsmost recent Christmas potluckdinner. Amongst staff, volunteersand society members, I engagedin conversation with Tsawwassenresidents John andMary Horton.

I recognized his name as amuseum benefactor from hisdonation of two paintings for themuseum’s annual fundraiser. Themagnificent paintings were wellreceived by the audience with anexcellent return for the museum’sneedy coffers.

Always on the lookout for asubject for a column, I suggestedwe meet for a chat in the newyear. With a vague recollection ofour conversation, John Horton, acclaimed mariner artist, agreedto meet for coffee.

Here’s a brief sketch in the lifeand times of John Horton: AnEnglishman by birth in 1935, theonly offspring of parents whowere servants to the upper class-es, Horton has enjoyed a mostexceptional career and lifestyle.Raised during the SecondWorldWar, Horton’s future was shapedby the sea, naval docks crammedwith warships in the shadows ofLondon suburbs.

At the age of four he was seri-ously injured in a car accidentand spent a year in hospital. Asa result, physical sports were notin his future, but fortunately artwas. Classical music, sketchingand painting, as well as a passionfor sailing, absorbed much ofHorton’s life.

Considered a prodigy, heapprenticed for a company build-ing interiors for shops, hotels and, most importantly, ships. Witha passion for naval architectureand drafting, his design work wasincorporated into his future as anaval marine artist.

Horton’s interest in ships andsea led to the British navy as afull-time seaman. He continuedto draw inspiration from thatenvironment and to paint when-ever he could. By age 26 someof his paintings were deemedtechnically correct and accepted

by the Royal Society of MarineArtists.

In 1966, Horton and familyimmigrated to Canada and settledin Vancouver as an architecturalartist, designing shopping cen-tres, power stations and high risetowers. In 1976, with a growingreputation as a marine artist, heclosed his business to become afull-time artist.

Horton’s outstanding work hasbeen recognized by his peers, pri-vate collectors, historians and theRoyal Society of Marine Artists.Capturing historical naval drama, his paintings have been recog-nized by government institutionsnationally and internationally.

Having spent much time at seaand coming into contact with ves-sels in distress, in 1979 he joinedthe Canadian Marine RescueAgency on dedicated patrols dur-ing fisheries openings. His workwith fisheries and search andrescue made his boat the busiestauxiliary vessel in Canada.

In 1994, Horton joined a vol-unteer Canadian life boat societypatrolling rivers and adjacentwaters, cruising in a 52-footlaunch built in 1944 originally forU.S. Admiral Nimitz.

Nice to stumble across a cul-tural icon residing in Delta.

And a good night to you, Mary.A fourth generation Ladnerite,

Editor:Re: Liberal foreign policy

getting Canada ignored byits allies in the ISIL fight, letter to the editor, Feb. 19Up to and since the

federal election, I havelooked forward to the let-ters sent to the Optimistin regards to the defeatedConservatives.

I find it rather amusinghow after a mere 100 days, the same Conservativesupporters continue torant on about the non-existent failures of our newgovernment, yearning forthe return of “the sunny

days” of one our mostpathetic governments inhistory.

I wish S.M. Cruickshankwould have taken a littlemore time to elaborate.Stephen Harper and hismotley crew caused moredamage to this countrythan one could imagine.

Interesting how I readthe letter the same day thenew Liberal governmentposted the details of 2012budget cuts which were, for unknown reasonsuntil today, withheld bythe Conservatives. TheLiberals had to fight in

court to see this docu-ment. Typical Harpertransparency.

I hope people take thetime to have a look at thegutting Harper did to ourcountry.

Under Harper, yes, theworld knew where Canadastood on issues. That iswhy the UN kicked usoff the Security Council.Harper could not betrusted and the people ofCanada got it right.

Back to sunnier days? Ithink our sun is of differ-ent colours.

Editor:Re: Plenty of spots for

dogs to run free, just not ondikes, letter to the editor,

Feb. 17Ellen Stewart points

out there are many dogowners who ignore theleashing laws at theBoundary Bay dike. Whileit is pointless to argue thatbreaking the law should becondoned or ignored, onecomment does need to belooked at more closely.

“If you want your belov-ed pet to run free, Deltahas parks for that.” Well,

the simple answer to thatis they don’t. If you arelooking for parks such asthey have in Vancouver,Surrey, Richmond,Langley and elsewhere, you won’t find them inDelta.

Ladner, for example, boasts three off-leash dogparks. Paterson Park is theonly one reasonably acces-sible but is totally unsafebordered by two very busyroadways with no fence. The North 40 is excep-tional but has some issueswith parking, general

conditions and garbageandWellington Point Parkis not only unsafe with nodefined area, but is barelyworth the designation ofa park.

In fact, Delta has rec-ognized this perhaps inthat it doesn’t call themparks. They are off-leashareas.

Fenced dog runs arewhat we need.

These areas can havea very positive effect onthe lives of dogs and theirowners.

Daffodils bloom at thegarden entrance to St.David’s Anglican Churchin Tsawwassen, a reminderof the important role theflower plays in the March1 celebration of St. David’sDay.

One of two symbolsassociated with SaintDavid andWales, the daf-fodil was introduced in the19th century as an optionto the humble leek — thevegetable that in the sev-enth century became thenational emblem of Wales.

The leek arises from anoccasion when a troopof Welsh soldiers wasordered to wear a leekon their helmet to dis-tinguish themselves in abattle against pagan Saxoninvaders. The battle is saidto have taken place in afield of leeks.

Many Welsh peoplewear both national sym-bols of Wales to celebrateSt. David on this day — thedaffodil and the leek.

The parish will com-memorate the Feast Dayon Tuesday at 6 p.m. whenthe daffodil will have prideof place at a PatronalFestival Service focusedon the life and legends ofSt. David, with traditionalWelsh music provided bySt. David’s CommunityChoir and Celtic harpistTomMorrison.

Choir anthems, histori-cal readings and hymnswill combine in a portrayalof the sixth century Celticmonk, abbot and bishopwho became patron saintof Wales and namesakeof Tsawwassen’s Anglicanparish.

Following the service, the leek will come into itsown in the form of CawlCennin (leek and potatosoup) served in the parishhall.

Everyone is welcometo come and enjoy thesounds and tastes of Walesat St. David’s Church,1115- 51A St.

“What is the connectionbetween our moms andthe season of Lent,” I askedmy colleague and friendFlower Pearson? Here’swhat she had to say:

“I’m lucky enough tohave annual visits frommymum. Before she arrives Iprepare; I clean, I dump asmany commitments as Ican, clearing my calendarto make space and time toanticipate her arrival.

We spend time doingthings I wouldn’t normallydo—museums, galleriesand scenic walks. We talkwhen I’m cleaning, shop-ping, when I get up andbefore I go to bed.

When she leaves lifefeels like a house afterthe Christmas decora-tions have been put away.

Emptier, gloomier butslightly more spacious andI choose what to return toits place.

She’s in my thoughts;I call her more, I prayfor her more. Over themonths things slip back.

Life becomes clutteredand phone calls lessen infrequency.

I really start to miss her. That’s usually when shecalls to tell us when shewill return.

Jesus visits us for Lent.I prepare, I make spaceto spend time and moneyI would usually use forother things. I excusemyself and focus on Jesus.I love to be ‘gatheredunder his wings as a hengathers her chicks’ but Iknow this level of commit-ment can’t continue.

When the time comesthat I miss his presenceand find myself busy, andtoo distracted to allow hispresence in my life, it’snearly Lent again. ThankGod!”

If you read to your childat home, what’s the point ofcoming to the library for sto-rytime?

It’s a hassle organizingeveryone, getting out of thedoor on time and dealing withinclement weather.

Why bother? It’s not only fun, but it’s a

social opportunity for boththe child and the caregiverwith many pluses.

Babytime helps little onesdevelop speech and languageskills, while Storytime pre-pares older children to learnto read.

Pouka came to the shelter as a surrender from an overwhelmed rescue. She was found as a stray rabbitliving outside, although she is familiar with people so she likely belonged to someone at some point.Pouka hasn’t been at the shelter long but she’s getting the hang of it pretty quickly. She is almost fullylitter box trained, although prior to being spayed she occasionally would “mark” near other unspayedrabbits. After she’s settled we’ll see how she does with other bunnies, although she currently could beadopted alone. Pouka tolerates being handled, if you can catch her! If Pouka is unhappy with somethingshe’ll squawk bark at you like a dog! If you don’t heed her warning she’ll nibble at your pant leg or atowel! There’s a whole lot of personality in this big white bunny. We believe Pouka is a New ZealandWhite Rabbit and therefore she may get a big bigger! She’s very good with an x-pen and hasn’t triedjumping the fences, so a home with a large rabbit run or a room would be ideal for this bunny as she’stoo large for a cage. We suspect Pouka is about 2 years old - Rabbits can be a 10 year + commitment!

Is there enough room in your family for Pouka’s big personality?

Homenotsosweet forPacersSenior boys basketball teambounced fromFraserValley playoffs after pair of lossesMARK BOOTHmbooth@delta-opt imist .com

The next time the Delta Pacersearn the chance to host a leagueplayoff tournament, they mightwant to decline.

For the second straight year, the senior boys basketball teamstruggled on its home floor in thepost-season and this time it result-ed in a prompt exit. After going 9-1to take top honours in the FraserValley West AAA League, Deltawas stunned 81-72 by the eighthplace North Delta Huskies onTuesday, then eliminated 24 hourslater after a heartbreaking 64-63defeat to LAMatheson.

It was a similar script to lastseason when the Pacers wentunbeaten in the AAAA SouthLeague but ended up fourth in theFraser Valley seeding tournamentafter not winning a game.

This time, first place didn’t evenguarantee spot in the Valley AAAfinals.

The Pacers needed to win twogames to earn one of four berthsup for grabs. They struggled tofind their groove offensively inboth outings, especially from theperimeter, while relying too muchon standout Jas Singh.

Delta finally heated up frombehind the arc in the fourthquarter to take 58-54 lead overMatheson, before the fourth seed-ed Surrey school rallied to closeout the game on a 10-5 run. Singhfinished the night with 29 points— nearly half his team’s entireproduction.

“That’s our weakness. Whenthese teams are good as they are(our ability to generate offenceother than three-point shots) canbe exposed,” said Pacers headcoach David Craig, who will havefour of his five starters returningnext season. “You can’t win withone guy scoring all your points. We have some young some kidswho probably put too much pres-sure on themselves.”

Delta ran into a Huskies teamthat looked vastly different thanthe one it beat by 17 points inregular season play back in earlyJanuary.

North Delta entered the playoffscoming off a pair of wins last week,

including a 12-point triumph overMatheson. The visitors took con-trol of the gamemidway throughthe fourth quarter and playedwith tremendous poise down thestretch.

“Our whole year has beeninconsistent but the guys arefinally starting to come togetheras a team and we haven’t had thatall year,” said Huskies head coachJaskriat Sodhan. “We have alsohad a lot of problems with injuriesand the flu. Our starting pointguard is still not here.

“I told them before the gamethey had to play with aggression, much more than (the Pacers) do.Those guys were number one (inthe league) for a reason. They area really good team. We played withaggression and confidence andthat’s the only way we can com-pete with those guys.”

Sodhan was also impressedwith how his team closed out thegame. The Huskies took care ofthe basketball, milked the clock oneach possession and hit enoughshots to foil any Pacer comebackbid.

“That hasn’t happened all year.We are usually the team that givesup the lead,” he laughed. “ThatMatheson win was so big for thisteam and I’m really proud of theseguys. “I told them we still havehad plenty of work to do. This winwon’t mean anything if we don’tback it up (with at least one morevictory).”

The Pacers entered the playoffswith not exactly loads of momen-tum.

They didn’t look dominantin their final two league gamesagainst non-playoff teams ElginPark and Frank Hurt. Singh was

also coming off the flu and missedthe regular season finale.

“We rely on the three ball a lotbut you still have to be better thanthem when you are cold (from thatrange),” added Craig. “I was afraid(of this game) all week but ourguys didn’t really believe it.

“North Delta played very well. They got their confidence up and, when they started to make a fewshots, realized they could playwith us. They have some good ath-letes and their big guys can shoot.”

Grade 11 Cam Gray was a forceon the boards in both games forthe Pacers, with 25 rebounds.Jackson Goodman added 20 to fin-ish of his high school career.

The Valley West AAA playofftournament concludes tonight atDSS with the championship gamebetween Southridge and KwantlenPark at 6:45 p.m.

The defending Pacific Junior HockeyLeague champions weren’t going to goaway that easy.

The North Vancouver Wolf Pack fired51 shots and posted a solid 4-0 victoryover the Delta Ice Hawks on Tuesdaynight to extend the best-of-seven openinground series to a fifth game on Saturday.Delta was looking to complete a surpris-ing four game sweep after finishing 21points behind North Vancouver in theregular season standings.

The Ice Hawks blitzed the Wolf Packin the opening two games of the seriesto produced 5-0 and 9-3 victories. Aftergrinding out a 2-1 game three win onSaturday, the tight-checking continuedback in Ladner.

The visitors opened the scoring earlyin the second period and added some

breathing room at the 7:32 mark of thethird when Caleb Holonk’s point shotfound its way through a maze of playersand into the top corner.

Delta had its chances to get back inthe game but failed to convert a coupleof power play opportunities in the thirdperiod and was 0-4 on the night.

Jacob Latrace was terrific in the Deltanet in a losing cause, while TrevorWithers earned first star honours with his30 save performance at the other end.

The Ice Hawks are looking for theirfirst playoff series win in three years afterbowing out the past two seasons to theWolf Pack, including a four game sweepin 2015.

Should the series go to a sixth game, itwould be played back in Ladner at 6 p.m.on Sunday.

Do you have good hearing but poor comprehension?

Ginette van Wijngaarden, fromConnect Hearing proudly displaysthe Audéo Venture hearing aid.

Do you sometimes feel that you canhear well, but not fully understandwhat’s being said? This can be mostevident in social conversations andwatching television. Fortunately, theremay be a solution for some peopledealing with this type of hearingloss - the Audéo Venture hearingaid has been designed specifically tohelp improve speech comprehensionwithout being noticeable in the ear.Poor comprehension in conversationcan possibly be caused by undetectedhearing loss in the high-frequencyrange. This means the sensory cells inthe cochlea that hearhigh-range soundsare damaged as a result of circulatorydisorders, diabetes, suddenhearing lossorworkplace noise.Hearing loss in thehigh frequency range makes speechsound muffled and unclear making itdifficult to hear consonants like s, f, t,k, h and g.Speech comprehension is even morechallenging when there is backgroundnoise or when television programshave backgroundmusic. The dilemmais that people with hearing loss in thehigh-frequency range do not considerthemselves to have a hearing problem.

Theycanheardeep toneswithno issue, and often put difficulty understandingspeechdown tounclear pronunciation. However, the time soon comes whenproblemswith comprehensionbecomeannoying.PhonakAudéoVentureHearingAidsThis past year, Swiss audiologists havedeveloped a hearing aid that can, inqualified candidates, improve speechcomprehension for those with hearingloss in thehigh-frequency range.Peoplecan sign up for a free demonstrationof the Audéo Venture hearing aidsby calling now to do so. During yourappointment, youwill begivenahearingtest and speechcomprehensionanalysis.

If inner-ear damage is present, a hearingcare professional will determine thedifference relative to normal hearing. These values are thenprogrammed intothe hearing aids, which precisely takeinto account andbalance the frequencyrange of the person being tested.Thedemonstration phase in particularis designed to clarify how speech com-prehension canbe improved in varioussituations andwhat role the hearing aidtechnology called “AutosenseOS”plays. The hearing aid recognizes where theperson being spoken to is located andamplifies only his or her voice, whileambient noise is lowered and the opti-mumhearing programs are seamlesslyadjusted. Thanks to several synchronousmicrophones, the hearing system candetect sound in all directions and selectthe direction that speech is comingfromwithinmilliseconds.According toSwiss researchers, this can significantlyimprove speech comprehension, espe-cially in conversation for some clients.Want tofindoutmore about theAudéoVenture hearing aid?
