DELTA KAPPA GAMMA,
CHI CHAPTER NEWSLETTER Editor: Anne Miller
DECEMBER, 2014 VOL. #8, ISSUE #2
Don’t forget to bring your DVS
donations to our next
Chi Chapter meeting on
Friday, December 5th!
Welcome New Members! It is a pleasure to welcome the
following new members of Delta Kappa Gamma: Dr. Sandra Deemer, a professor at Millersville University, Dr. Brenda Hanthorn, Early Childhood Supervisor at Lancaster-Lebanon I.U. 13, and Kim Kluxen Meredith, retired Spanish teacher from Hempfield School District.
In the October newsletter, I asked Chi chapter to EMPOWER ourselves by “opening
doors of opportunity that come our way.” The door of opportunity at my house has been opening up to treat-seeking children for the past hour. With choruses of “Trick or Treat” followed by shy “thank you’s,” I have immensely enjoyed the neighborhood teens, tweens, and little ones who are taking full advantage of this evening. I am amazed at their make-up, their politeness, their beauty and scariness, their patience, and the models they are to their smaller counterparts while waiting at the door. As I plop a goodie into each pumpkin or pillowcase, I comment on how nice it is to see them tonight and how much I look forward to seeing them again next year. This repartee is empowerment, and it happens from both sides.
Our neighborhood children are equipping themselves with experiences and knowledge
about all sorts of things this evening. For them I wish a safe life, a happy life, an educated life, and a long life. I wish the same for you.
Our annual Traditional Turkey Dinner will be Friday, December 5. Come for the singing, the holiday music, and meeting with friends old and new. It's a popular meeting for Chi members. Help support DVS. Purchase a raffle ticket and take home a winning holiday-themed basket.
Save Saturday, April 18, 2015 for a Fashion Show & Brunch at the General Sutter Inn, with fashions by Clemintine's in Lititz. Your friends are always accepted and expected.
Do you have a Facebook page? Can you help us build one for Chi Chapter? We need to discover Facebook, so contact me and “let's talk.”
Enjoy the Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas holidays. Be safe at home and when traveling. If we don't see you in December, we hope to see you in February.
Yours in education,
Lois Brown Chi President 2014-2016

Come Perform With Us!
By Kay Gontner, Chair of the Visual and
Performing Arts Committee
The Visual and Performing Arts
Committee is primarily responsible for
the music that occurs at each of our
meetings. A special song is created for
each president’s biennium and sung by
the Chi members to reinforce the
purposes/goals of our chapter. This
year’s offering, titled “Come Join Our
Friends” is our newest venture.
A choral ensemble is an integral
part of Chi’s Initiation Ceremonies and
the singing of carols at our holiday
dinner in December. This year’s evening
entertainment will be presented by the
Donegal Rhythm Choir, a perfect avenue
to usher in the holiday season.
Our committee encourages any of
our members to share their talents by
lending their voice or a musical
instrument as well as serving as an
accompanist.
Let us know if you are willing to be
a part of making music together. We
look forward to having some new voices
join us on December 5th.
The Visual and Performing Arts Committee Members are Kay
Gontner, Carol Hoover, and Janice Wright.
Thanks to them, our new special song for our chapter president Lois
Brown’s biennium is called, “Come Join Our Friends”.

Support Needed for DVS for the Holidays
By Amy Smith, Chair of the Projects Committee
The Projects Committee has been busy. We are again collecting items for DVS, for both
their participants and their children. Our Chi Chapter is always so generous! We will be
continuing our support of DVS this December. DVS is always striving to give the participants
and their children support on all levels. One way that we will be offering assistance is through our
donations. Attached you will find two lists that detail holiday needs for their mothers and their
families. Please bring your donation items to the December meeting. If you are interested in
volunteering at DVS, please contact Deb Manning via email: [email protected]. In the
spring we will be supporting our local Habitat for Humanity. Stay tuned for more information.
Thank you for your time and care, Chi sisters!

Learn About the Past
By Carol Hartley, Chair of the Historical
Records Committee
Chi Chapter's Historical Records Committee has, over many years, accumulated, saved and lovingly cared for information about our chapter.
Before recent technology came into use, some of our sisters saved newspaper clippings in scrapbooks, typed historical information into booklets using Smith-Corona manual typewriters, and created interesting poster-board displays of photos. To them we are indebted for our knowing a lot about our chapter's background and undertakings...and also to them for housing a lot of "stuff" in the process!
We have boxes of slides and pictures, a partially started database about members from 1948 to the present, old yearbooks, and many other items that our committee members are going to be looking through what to keep, what to organize differently, and what to share or dispose of. We have an autobiography collection of information about members that needs much attention to bring it up to date. Minutes of meetings, presidents' memos to officers and members, and great photos are there to enjoy. If you would like to join a committee that will be active and interesting, let President Lois know of your interest. We'd be glad to provide you with a chance to learn a lot about the history of our chapter, to talk with some of our sisters about their journey in education, and to understand why Chi Chapter remains a strong chapter with an interesting past and present involvement in our various educational settings.

Be a Leader! By Eileen Little, Chair of the Nominations Committee
Are you interested in a leadership role in our chapter or at the state level? Every one of us is a leader so don’t shy away thinking that is not for me! Think of our seven purposes and how you could grow professionally and personally with your DKG sisters.
The Nominations Committee’s role at our Chapter level is to create a slate of officers for Chi Chapter for the 2016 – 2018 biennium. So as we go through this biennium think about the various officers and ask anyone on the committee for more details about these roles and their responsibilities. The Nominations Committee members are: Eileen Little, Mary Adams, Violet Geib, Beth Gunnion and Joan Stemen. We would be happy to talk with you and explore these possibilities so you could be our next chapter Secretary, Second Vice President, First Vice President or President!
At the State level we nominate members from Chi Chapter for the officer’s positions for
Alpha Alpha State as well as positions on the Nominations Committee and Finance Committee at the state level. The officers’ positions are all two-year terms, just like at the chapter level. The Nominations and Finance Committees are four-year terms at the state level. There is nomination paperwork to complete for these state level positions. They are available on the website and we would be happy to help you!
The Alpha Alpha State Achievement Award is given to a sister to recognize and honor
distinguished and outstanding service to Alpha Alpha State. This sister has promoted the purposes and the policies of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. For more information contact Carol Hartley.

Empowerment Time with Cori (ETC)
Along with our active members and our reserve members in Chi Chapter, we have who we lovingly refer to as Rose Members. Our Rose Members are those women educators who have spent many years in the classroom, spending their careers with children and young people, doing what they love doing. At this point in their long and productive lives, our chapter is giving back to them. Rose members do not pay dues at the state or international levels, so they are not officially members of Alpha Alpha State (PA) or of DKG Society International. They are members of Chi Chapter only.
As members of Chi Chapter, we recognize our Rose Members during our Necrology Service when that time comes. Although our Rose Members are usually unable to attend our meetings, we keep in touch with them through their families and through our Chi Chapter newsletter. Our Chi Chapter Rose Members, Faye Gemmill and Sara Ruth, are two very special ladies.
