A Word from the Editor

United Federation Starfleet

has always prided itself on

being in contact with its

members. Whether this is

via the forums, town hall

meetings or simply

chatting in IRC, Second

Life or even the UFS Grid.

The Delta Communicator

looks to expand on this

communication and bring

the news direct to your

terminal bringing you

gossip, interviews and

news from around the

world.

This of course could not be

done without you the

Members. Volunteering is

a major part of any fan

organization and we want

to know what you want to

see, read or even write

about. So get in touch

with the editor in chief and

let him know and next

issue could be your

content.

THE ADMIRALS CORNER Welcome to the brand new Delta Communicator! This issue has been a long time coming, and I would personally like to thank the hard work and effort of Commander Kermie

Mistwallow to breathe new life into this popular publication, which is intended to bring you news from throughout United Federation Starfleet as well as your favourite genre,

Star Trek!

I hope that this is going to be the first of many, many spectacular issues filled with all sorts of news, interviews, reviews, and much, much more! There are a lot of changes from

the last time you saw the Delta Communicator. I certainly look forward to the next edition, and I hope you will too!

Speaking of changes, as you've seen of recently there have been several changes made when it comes to United Federation Starfleet. We've implemented a smoking policy,

we've removed retirements and simplified LOAs and ways to return to active duty from retirement, and we've seen the strong re-start of Astarios Colony. We've seen the

explosive growth and popularity of our Online Academy, the continued development of our Marines, and even a new Joint Chief position awarded to a long time and hard

working member.

Changes is something that's always difficult to accept, especially when it's new or it seems like it's something that'll affect you. But, changes are necessary in order to continue

the growth and development of the UFS as we continue to move toward the future . . . a future that'll be filled with challenges, but we will meet together as we strive for

unprecedented success!

During our town halls, we have been mentioning several open positions as part of UFS Command. I'm sure that many of you are wondering why we have these positions open

and what they do. They are all essential positions, which helps us to keep things functioning and moving forward into that better and successful future.

These positions include:

* Head of Public Relations & Marketing

* Command Master Chief

* UF Starfleet Historian and Archivist

* Director of Intellectual Property Management

* Web and Graphics Designer

* Sector Commander for Excalibur Sector (OSGrid)

These positions are not easy ones, by any means. They involved a lot of hard work and effort, which some do not realize until after they've taken on the role, leading them to

either not be able to do the job as intended and they end up being reassigned or they step down. It takes a very dedicated person, who is willing to step up and lead from the front

- almost to the point of hyper-activity - in order to take on some of these positions.

This applies especially for the Sector Commander positions, where those individuals serve as my representatives on those grids. I know that some have reservations about our

expanding to other grids; however, the opportunities that are present there will help us to continue to see unprecedented growth and ensure the future of the UFS for a long time

to come.

BenjaminBastian Hermans may be new to the position, but he has been doing an amazing job so far. He's really taken the lead, and can serve as a role model of how one can

serve as a Sector Commander. I applaud him, as well as the efforts of Marie Lawson who helped to keep things running for so long in spite of the difficulties that she endured.

One thing we also have to keep in mind is that many of these positions are filled by volunteers - individuals who give up their own personal time in order to work for the UFS,

with the only payment they get is the gratification and self-satisfaction that they've done an amazing job. Even if you don't believe that you're cut out for one of the positions in

Command, there are other ways to volunteer and get involved with the UFS, which I would highly encourage you to explore.

You can help to greet visitors in the Welcome Centre. You could DJ and provide music for the entertainment of everyone, or even host one of the many events scheduled by

Events Management. You could write articles for the Delta Communicator, or help to represent the UFS at external events like Relay for Life, Burning Life, the Resident vs

Linden snowball fight, or other major Second Life social functions. If you are interested, please contact Zania Turner or Kermie Mistwallow.

No matter what you see as your path within the UFS, I encourage you to step up and get involved. Only when you do so will your talents contribute to the whole, and we can

work together to create a much brighter and more successful future for United Federation Starfleet!

Be Strong, Be Proud, Be United Federation Starfleet

The Interview by Kermie Mistwallow

Taking time out of her

busy schedule, we are

joined this month by the

Head of the UF Starfleet

Diplomatic Corps

Lieutenant Commander

Arilla Aeon. The

Diplomatic Corps is

essential in a group such

as ours and today we are

going to find out what

they do and the goals for

the future.

Arilla, Thank you for

joining us for this

interview. Firstly I

would like to ask why

did you decide to take

the position as the

Head of this project?

Well Kermie, I enjoyed

all of my commands but

I always thought it was

important to put time

towards the whole

group. CARE is a good

way to do that, Social

events help is too, also

the academy effects the

whole group, all good

ways to help keep UFS

number one. I applied to

this job because it allows

me to represent the

whole group, no matter

what area.

Can you explain what

it is that the Diplomatic

Corps actually does in

Second Life and for

UFS?

Diplomatic Corps is a

division of Command,

but effectively it acts as

a branch within a

Branch.

United Federation Starfleet Diplomatic Corps

An interview with Lieutenant

Commander Arilla Aeon.

Head of UF Starfleet

Diplomatic Corps

Reporting to the BH for

Command and the

Commander in Chief,

answering to them and the

membership. It is a position of

honor, but also of service. The

membership expects and

deserves to have its best

interests represented.

Diplomatic Corps is out of

character, we organize treaties

with other groups. These

partnerships can be RP, or

purely economical. We also

help promote the fleet and deal

with public relations issues as

how they relate to groups and

individuals.

How many treaties do we

currently have and how do

they affect the way we

interact with other groups?

There are currently a handful

of active treaties and of many

different kinds. For example

we have a long standing and

very productive relation with

FFESP, we maintain relations

with large groups and small.

We aided in promoting the

UFS Grid and improving

relations with groups on other

grids such as 3rd rock and OS

Grid.

There are currently 17 active

projects to which our

Ambassadors are assigned. We

have filtered a few non

desirable associations.

The main way this effects UFS

depends on the treaty... for

example the Cardassian Union

is seeking Academy sharing, a

useful proposal to both parties.

What is the ultimate goal for

the Diplomatic Corps?

The ultimate goal is to create

beneficial relations between

UFS and other groups,

protecting the interests of all

members from civilians to the

admiralty.

How can the

UFS

Membership get

involved with

future

alliances?

Drop me a note

on the Forum

expressing an

Some

characteristics I

look for: energy,

integrity, and

loyalty.

interest. Any Ambassador I

appoint is run past Command,

specifically Sans or Mike.

Diplo Corps is constantly in

touch with these and will not

choose members arbitrarily.

Each project is unique and

needs to be handled by people

who fit the situation. Yet

expressing an interest will not

promise you a billet.

Ambassadors are selected and

appointed, we generally

approach members we feel fit

a situation, but a good

indicator of an effective

ambassador is ones that

express an interest. Some

characteristics I look for:

energy, integrity, and loyalty.

With the UFS Grid now up

and running what is the

Diplomatic Corps Role in

this endeavor?

We have been working to

break down some barriers that

existed due to some

misconceptions proliferated by

certain organizations. Once

presented with facts and the

deals available on the grid we

we were able to

establish

contact with

some groups.

Referring large

groups like IFT

for example to

the admin for

the grid. The grid is a major

project of UFS Inc. that we are

proud to support.

Thank you very much for

your time, this has been a

great interview and shares

with us just what duties the

Diplomatic Corps does for

UFS as a whole.

If you are interested in

helping out the Diplomatic

Corps please contact Lt

Cmdr Arilla Aeon via

normal means and I am sure

your assistance will be

appreciated.

UFS EXPANDS INTO OWN GRID - B y A dmi ra l M ik e Ca l h ou n Please allow me to explain a

little about the grid and how

we play.

We all know about virtual

worlds like Second Life, OS

Grid and many others. What

we wanted to create was a

world that was as versatile as

Second life but specifically

catered for the Star Trek fans.

We also want to create a Star

Trek environment that is

realistic and close to the 'real'

thing so to speak.

So what exactly does that

mean you ask?

- We play in REAL

TIME...that means that 1 year

in UFS GRID is 1 REAL

year....so 2011 is considered

2386 in UFS Grid.

- We also use the existing

warp chart....that means that

we know exactly how long it

takes a ship to reach a certain

destination...so we do not play

'poof and your there' if it takes

a ship 2 weeks at warp 5 to get

somewhere, it will take 2

weeks to get back as well.

- We understand it's all about

fun....so while this is

impossible to control...we do

ask you to play fair....But we

are working on creating a

system that will make all of

this even more realistic, so

please stay tuned and HAVE

FUN.

- There is only 1 Starfleet, 1

Klingon Empire and so

on.....in

order to be a member of

Starfleet you will need to join

United Federation Starfleet

(www.ufstarfleet.org). In order

to be a member of the Klingon

Defense Force you will need

to join the Klingon Group that

owns the Qo'noS sim...This of

course does NOT mean you

cannot create a Klingon

Colony or become a separate

Klingon group...just not the

main Qo'noS Empire...The

same goes for Starfleet.....there

is only 1 Starfleet but of

course that doesn't mean you

can't become a renegade group

like the Maquis or start a

colony or world that is not part

of the Federation...Anything is

possible as long as it falls

within the Star Trek franchise

as created by Gene.

NO BORG Seriously they are gone...

We follow first and

foremost Memory Alpha

as a guide and then

Memory Beta...so please

try to stay in line with

those 2 sources.

Meaning...it is written that

there are no more

Borg...so we stick with

that part of Federation

History..

Q. When is this universe set? A: The year is 2385......4

years after the Borg's massive

attack on the Federation (Star

Trek Destiny Novels). While

the Borg no longer exists,

thanks to the Caeliar, the

Federation is still rebuilding

its key planets after 40% of Starfleet was destroyed.

As an answer to the Typhon

pact, The Federation and the

Klingon Empire reacted by

expanding the Kithomer

Accords, inviting the Imperial

Alliance, Talarian Republic

and Cardassian Union into the

An Introduction by Hidalgo Dorchester

For those how don't

know me already, my

name is Lt Hidalgo

Dorchester and I am

currently in charge of

the Simulator Training

Division at UFSA. I got

asked by Cmdr

Mistwallow to write a

little text for his

readers about the

Division, our mission,

what we do and also

why I chose to the

position. I will talk a

little bit about what we

hope to become over

time and about what

we need to do to

achieve the best in the

future Generation of

young Enlisted and

Commissioned

members of the

United Federation of

Starfleet.

Well, let's begin with a

rough overview of the

Division. We are the

youngest child

currently assigned to

UFS Academy. The

Planning for the

Division had already

begun more than 12

month ago. You see

we really take our time

to get it right...and

done in a way so that

our plans can work for

everyone in UFS.

UF Starfleet Academy - Sim Training Division

We asked Lt Hidalgo Dorchester

to give us his Views and Goals

for the Simulator Training

Division

We will do our best to

ensure proper training in

behavior as a UFS Member

and how to actually

roleplay the position the

young newcomers will be

assigned to after their

graduation. We will do

everything we can to

produce a new generation

of training for the cadets to

enable the Academy to

provide the Fleet with

personnel which is as well

trained as humanly

possible.

At the moment we are still a

very small Division and are

still in desperate need of

more CTO's. Now some

may ask what a CTO is.

Well..it is not the latest

edition of a school

book...that I can assure you.

CTO stand for Cadet

Training Officer.

The new generation of

instructors who will be in

charge of leading the

completely redesigned

Simulations which will run

throughout most days of the

week and at some point will

be reachable for every cadet

from every timezone. The

CTO's will be in charge of

designing new simulations

for the division

as well as plan and execute

them while they are

coordinating those trainings

with the Starship and

Starbase Command crews

around the fleet.

We will work closely

together with all CO's and

XO's as well as with the

Cadet Companies to get as

many cadets as possible

involved with just as many

already graduated members

of UFS.

Because

nothing can

train someone

better then a

person who has

already gone

through an

extensive

training program and has

gathered a pretty big

amount of experience in

their time at UFS.

Our mission is to provide

an extensive and wide-

ranged training for every

cadet at the Academy.

Currently we are still

working on the setup of

several new Holodeck-

simulations to be able to

emulate several

environments to give the

Cadets a feeling of being

“CTO stands for

Cadet

Training

Officer”

involved and being out

there....doing something

exciting.

We try to make the

Academy experience even

more intense then it has

ever been. We try to have it

as practical as possible. We

do not need much for to

achieve those goals. All we

need is the cooperation of

the CO's and XO's out there

and some more volunteers for the

position as a

CTO. Now

some will say:

That would be

nice...but I do

not want to

lose my

already existing Secondary Billet.

Well....I can rest those

minds assured that they will

not have to fear that. The

position as a CTO is and

will be handled like an

Academy Instructor at the

moment. A so called NB

(None Billet) It will not

interfere with any billets

whatsoever. So I hope that

we will get some more

applications for the CTO-

Jobs soon.

If you get the hint....hear

the calling...contact me

Hidalgo Dorchester.

Academy Online Introduction by BenjaminBastian Hermans

Today I would like to

drop a few lines about

Academy Online as to

what it is, what it is for

and who is behind all

that.

Academy Online is an

e-learning platform,

allowing Cadets and

Officers to take

classes at their own

pace and even all by

themselves - without

the need of an

instructor in world.

Especially Alpha and

Epsilon Cadets will

benefit for the new

online system, as

during their online

times only a few

classes are offered.

Another problem has

always been that there

are plenty of classes

that are not taught at

all - either because no

one who is able to

teach the class is

around anymore, or -

more likely, because

no instructor has

enough available

spots to teach all

classes they can.

With a current total of

four classes taught a

week by Professors

and three classes

taught by Instructors,

there is no room to

cover all classes.

UF Starfleet Academy - Online Department

We introduce Ensign

BenjaminBastian Hermans,

Assistant Director of Academy

Online.

Some may now ask, "Is this

the end of in world

classes?"... I have to admit,

I was worried about that as

well. Being a Professor

myself, this question was of

vital importance for me.

However, the answer is no.

For several reasons. First of

all not all classes are

offered online. For example

all interactive classes may

only be taken in world. In

addition any kind of

practical or otherwise

special classes are also

unavailable online.

Another thing is, that a big

part of UFS is group and

community. Taking a class

online is not as much fun as

taking a class in world.

Additionally online there is

no way to ask any questions

or get any support with the

exam. The computer will

ask and grade strictly within

the given parameters. Being

a teacher, who teaches still,

even after Academy Online,

I can confirm that all my

classes have been visited by

students and I have

maintained an average of

about five students per

class. Other Instructors I

talked to, too did not

complain about NO

SHOWS or less students.. at

least not in an increased

amount than before. This

proves that Academy

Online works, without

killing in world classes.

Now, after explaining what

Academy Online is, let's

look into how it works.

First of all, the Academy is

open to ALL UFS

members, Cadets and

Officers alike. It can be

found by visiting

http://academy.u

fstarfleet.org

Before one is

able to use it, it

is required to log

in. All UFS

members who

have been with

UFS for some

time, are able to

"Is this the

end of in

world

classes?"

retrieve their Account

information, by requesting a

password reset with their

username

(loginfirstnamelastname). An

email with the password will

then be sent to the email

address that is used in the

forums. If you are a newer

member of the UFS, then

your login information are

not yet stored in the database.

In this case, you are required

to send an email to

[email protected]

containing your SL login

name AND a VALID

email address.

PLEASE NOTE: IMs or

Forum PMs are NOT

accepted and will be

ignored.

Once you are logged in, you

are free to take classes of

your choice. Classes are

categorized into Colleges,

similar to the classes in

world. However, Academy

Online is, per Admirals

Order, for now using

different colleges and Schools

than the in

world

Academy.

This issue is

currently

being

discussed with

the Admiral.

For the time being, the

classes are to be listed

according to their in-world

and wiki listing.

If you have any questions

about Academy Online,

please feel free to contact

Lieutenant Eddie

Hagoromo, Ensign

BenjaminBastian Hermans

or our Academy Online

Staff. On behalf of the

whole Academy Online

team, We would like to

wish you a happy new year

with only the best wishes.

Astraios Colony - 3rd Rock Grid

Deep in the Gamma Quadrant, beyond the Chamra Vortex, lies a little known sector, the Astraios System. Here three small

planets orbit a relatively young star. The huge asteroid belt of the Rhakar system stretches into this region. The furthermost

planet, Astraios, is an Minshara-class planet. The humanoid population is primarily settled on the northern continent, where

fresh water is easily available for crop growth and consumption. They progressed to warp capacity a century ago. Despite this

the Astraionians have kept mostly to themselves, a few traders travel to Rhakar for supplies. A resolute few undertake the trip

to Deep Space Nine, thousands of light years away.

The UFS established a small colony on Astraios approximately twenty years ago. Their focus was, for the most part, scientific.

Archeologists wished to study the remains of the Hur’q race, scientists wished to study the volatile toh-maire gas contained in

the nebula that occur in this region of space. The colony was abruptly abandoned when hostilities broke out between Rhakar

and Astraios. A fragile peace has been negotiated. Astraionians are far more aware of their vulnerabilities. They have in their

possession a rare Iconian gateway. Seldom used, highly treasured. When the Starfleet Command approached them to ask if

they would be willing to have UFS reestablish a base on Astraios, they were delighted.

Sector Commander BenjaminBastian Hermans, with a small crew of brave officers, has arrived at the colony. Rebuilding is in

progress. There is not only a great deal of work, but many problems. Things move of their own accord. Systems turn on and

off on their own. Items placed, disappear. Power fluctuations are rampant. Sabotage? Rips in the time-space continuum? What

IS the Astraios effect?
