The staff at Delroy wish all our families, friends, community members and business partners all the very best for the festive season. We hope it is a time filled with joy, love and peace. 2017 has flown by in the blink of an eye, I guess because it has been so jammed packed with fabulous events, activities and learning opportunities for all our students! Students have embraced the sporting fields, competing in CHS sport, Astley Cup, Serisier Cup, Narromine Sporting Challenge, various u15/and u16 competitions and support unit challenges as well as weekly sport. One of the NSW Premiers targets set in 2016, is to reduce childhood obesity and we are serious about getting our kids moving! In that vein as well, we have already started shifting our canteen to meet the new standards for a healthy canteen with more fresh nutritious healthy foods. Crunch crunch! The Delroy band and choir have gone from strength to strength this year and the support unit band and cultural dance group under the guidance and wisdom of Mr Doug Gordon has just flourished! Circus and Duke of Edinburgh programs provide opportunity for personal growth and leadership as well as lots of fun. Academically, our school has shown excellent individ- ual growth in NAPLAN and phenomenal growth in the Science VALID results this year. Everyday teachers do amazing work in their classrooms so all students can achieve their best. They deserve our thanks. The SRC has implemented fabulous student voice lessons and the Premiers Targets Team has organised dedicated literacy and numeracy lessons across the school each Tuesday. Delroy is such a great school with awesome students and a fantastic staff! I want to express my gratitude and say heartfelt thanks. I wish Year 10 good luck as they head off to the Senior Campus next year and say au revoir to our staff who are leaving Delroy. Kind regards Mrs Debbie Head Principal’s message…. SCIENCE…. Dear Parents and Community Firstly, a big thank you for a wonderful 2017! It has been a great year for the Science Department culminating in wonderful VALID results for our Year 10 cohort. This has been due to the hard work put in by the staff and students, in particular when doing scientific investigations. It is very pleasing to see the positive results. 2018 will usher in a few changes with new units of work rolling out for Year 7 and Year 9, along with assessment tasks linked to these units. The major focus will be building the scientific metalanguage of all students to ensure that they talk, think and write like Scientists. In this day and age it is so important that we develop the critical thinking of the next generation. We all hope you have a safe and happy holidays! From all of us at Delroy Science Department

This term in Visual Arts Year 7 students have started a unit of work on Portraits. Students started the term by drawing different features of the face and learning how to incorporate

shadow and tone into their artworks.

During Week three students from 7ART2 and 7ART4 went outside into the playground to do some Experimental Portrait Drawings. This exercise allows students to draw without a conventional medium such as a pencil or paintbrush; instead students were asked to

draw faces using masking tape, sticks and leaves.

Merry Christmas

This term in Photography and Digital Media students were introduced to the unit of work: Artist Inspired. This unit allowed students to study some of the most interesting photographers and have a go at creating images based on their inspired photographer’s style. One of the artists studied was Nikolai Tolstyh who creates unique animal inspired stencil images and uses Instagram as his exhibition platform. Students first designed their image and carefully cut them out to create their stencil. Students then used the Support Quad garden to take their stencil images; some students also used the Chinese Friendship Gardens on the CAPA excursion. Here are some of the amazing images! BAIRNSDALE ORCHESTRA

On Friday 24th November Bairnsdale Orchestra visited Dubbo College Delroy Campus for a workshop and dinner, which was followed by a performance open for the whole Dubbo Community to enjoy. The performance was spectacular featuring a Jazz Band, String Band and the Orchestra as a whole. The Dubbo College Band featured in their Orchestra performing ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Gimme Some Lovin’. We have been offered a huge opportunity from this night to go down to Victoria and perform at Bairnsdale College, as well as combine workshops and performances. The night was a huge success full of opportunities and experiences. I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone in the audience and both students and Mrs Sinclair for helping set up and help organise on the night. Thank you Miss Brooke Tonks MUSIC Teacher

BUSH TUCKER EXCURSION On Thursday 23rd of November, Miss Smith and the Freeman support class went on an excursion to the Dubbo Regional Botanic Gardens to partake in an Indigenous walk through. This walkthrough was hosted by Robert Sloane who told the story of the Songlines which Indigenous people used to navigate the landscape and request access to other nations country. The students were also given the opportunity to learn about totems, the spirit world and the plants which may be used as food and medicine. Robert showed the students how to identify the various trees by their leaves and seeds while also introducing them to the flavours Indigenous people used to season their food.

A special thanks to Kim May, Jess May and Robert Sloane for providing the students with the opportunity to engage in an Indige-nous perspective and understand their surrounding geography by experiencing it. Miss Kristy Smith Support Unit

SUPPORT NEWS….. On Wednesday of Weeks 2 and 4 students from our partnering primary schools visited for transi-tion. The Support Unit ran mini lessons with Year 6 students to give them some insight into what they can look forward to in 2018. Students were involved in a garden lesson with Miss Cronk making flower fabric prints and planting their own vegetables and herbs. Students also participated in their first Food Technology lesson in the commercial kitchen cooking Cheesy-Mite Scrolls. Strive Class Scoop…...

I write this newsletter article with a touch of sadness as I realise that the wonderful group of students I have been working with this year will be graduating out of the Strive Class and embarking on their Stage 5 studies next year. It has been a privilege to work with these students, and while things haven’t always been ‘smooth sailing’, they all have a very special place in our (Steven and myself) hearts. My hope is that the 2017 Strive Class can apply what they’ve learnt from their experience this year, and continue to strive in all facets of their lives. We look forward to welcoming our next cohort of Year 8 Strive students and the fond memories that will be created. As the year wraps up, students in the Strive Class are very much looking forward to seeing the completion of their Strive Class Cook Book. This cook book features the recipes that students have catered for Homework Centre, as well as a few of students own favourite contributions. Our excursion in Week 9 to the Colour Copy Shop will see the cook book realised. It would be remiss of me not to thank and make mention of the people who have made this project possible. Firstly, as always, I would like to thank Woolworths Delroy Park for their continued support of the Strive Class through their donation of our ingredients. Secondly, the cost associated with the cook book would not have been possible without the STEAM grant. I would also like to thank the Colour Copy Shop for their support and advice through the development of this project. It is also important to recognise Mrs Kelly and her team who allow us to use the kitchen facilities on a fortnightly basis. Finally, I would like to extend a most sincere thanks to the students of the Strive Class who were instrumental in cooking the recipes, as well as typing them into documents that could be collated into a book form. I would like to also take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and joyous time over this festive period and into the New Year. Mrs Rachel Cody Strive Teacher
