The message was a comparison to the ar- eas of the earth that are closest to the water and are sub- ject to flooding. Their resilience comes from having marsh land as their first defense before the land is dry and green. The marshlands are specifically designed by nature to accept the flood waters - their plants to absorb the excess water and then slowly allow the water to re- cede without catastrophe. We humans build our homes, our cities right on the water, not allowing for the natural flow of things to protect our homes and homelands. So, with this lesson in mind, it is my intention to allow the virtual “marsh” around me to help me absorb the storms that come flooding in to weigh heavily on my soul and being. And what is the virtual marsh? It is the support one receives from friends and family. It is the self-love that eating well and exercise can provide. It is looking to the resources of medical personnel, clergy, and lay healers who provide the knowledge and advice to make proper decisions about oneself. It is the people with whom we come in contact who provide a positive experience, whether fleeting or in depth. The first thing I did was to reach out to a trusted friend. It is amazing how much easier it was to bare the burden I was feeling once I did that. I then devised a plan of action to help overcome the obstacles to my sense of well being one step at a time. And then, just when I needed it the most, this sermon about resilience. My in- terpretation of that speech is probably different from any of the other 3700 people who heard it. But, what was said doesn’t matter - it was the impact it had on me which will take me forward and maybe, just maybe, will have a rip- pling effect on others, as well.. Now, on the first days of the Jewish New Year, which coincides with the beginning of the American school year, I wish you strength to find your own marshland and a I extend a hearty wish for a happy and healthy New Year to all who will read this column. Linda Here we are in October which is a busy month for our plat. Budgets will be presented for the 2016 year. This month starts our homeowner meetings on the 4 th Tuesday. If you are interested in running for the board you can submit your name to Bernie Rosenberg in writing so it can be placed on the bal- lot. You must be a member in good standings ac- cording to our DOCS. A new board member must take a class that is required by the state - the Certifi- cation Class. They will have 3 months to do or be removed from the board. Our community looks great thanks to all our resi- dents who take pride in our HOA. Just a reminder about trash - it is to be put in garbage cans NOT plastic bags to keep critters away. Our maintenance staff will put bags back on the side of your house, so please comply with our request. We are planning to have AT&T speak at each of our homeowners’ meetings through this year - Oc- tober, November and December. The reason they are coming to their meetings is to learn and know what is going on with our NEW CABLE COMPANY. Homeowner meetings give you the opportunity to ask questions of the board so you know what’s going on first hand instead of listening to all the rumors. The presentations by AT&T will also make the meetings more interesting. So come out to hear what you need to know to be an interested member of the community. If you need a ride to the meeting so as not to have to drive at night, contact Iris Pavey or Linda Solomon. Their phone numbers are on page 2. Sy

Thanks to my rabbi, my new resolve is to become more resilient. The message was a comparison to the ar-eas of the earth that are closest to the water and are sub-ject to flooding. Their resilience comes from having marsh land as their first defense before the land is dry and green. The marshlands are specifically designed by nature to accept the flood waters - their plants to absorb the excess water and then slowly allow the water to re-cede without catastrophe. We humans build our homes, our cities right on the water, not allowing for the natural flow of things to protect our homes and homelands. So, with this lesson in mind, it is my intention to allow the virtual “marsh” around me to help me absorb the

storms that come flooding in to weigh heavily on my soul and being. My in-terpretation of that speech is probably different from any of the other 3700 people who heard it. But, what was said doesn’t matter - it was the impact it had on me which will take me forward and maybe, just maybe, will have a rip-pling effect on others, as well.. Now, on the first days of the Jewish New Year, which coincides with the beginning of the American school year, I wish you strength to find your own marshland and a I extend a hearty wish for a happy and healthy New Year to all who will read this column. DELRAY VILLAS CITIZEN OBSERVER

PATROL Submitted by Vol. Captain Lloyd Lukens

PROTECT YOU AND YOUR HOME

1. Unfortunately thick shrubs that lend curb appeal can provide cover for a burglar jimmying his way into your house. Keep vegetation trimmed low and consider installing thorny plants close to the house.

2. A mirror in the entryway lets you assess your view before heading out the door. But check its position from your front window. Can you see the reflection of your alarm system? If so would-be intruders can, too - and they'll know at a glance if you neglected to arm it when you dashed out on an errand.

3. A bowl or a basket near your front door or under a window where everyone tosses keys, wallets and cell phones is very convenient. Sure you'll know where they are and so will a burglar. It is best to place these items next to your bed.

4. No one likes to get locked out of his or her home; but, a spare key stashed under a rock in your gar-den or under a door mat is asking for trouble. In-stead, give a spare key to a trusted neighbor.

5. You might keep the deadbolt locked on your front door, but what about the door off the patio? Or maybe you leave the garage door open during the afternoons. Be as conscientious about your less used entrances as you are with your main one.

6. You think hiding valuables among your unmention-ables is a good idea - so do thieves. Ditto for your nightstand and under the mattress. Smarter loca-tions include the attic, basement, kid’s room.

THIS MESSAGE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE DELRAY VILLAS VOLUNTEER CITIZEN OBSERVER PATROL, (C.O.P.) Unit # 16

Dorothy Jacks of the Property Appraiser's Office said we should have received our Property Tax Notices several weeks ago. The Property Appraiser's Office is located at 14925 Cumberland Drive, Delray Beach. State Attorney, David Aronberg, has a volunteer program in his office that currently has approximately eighty partici-pants. He would like to add more. Please contact Lori Vinikoor, if you are interested in volunteering. He would also like to see a bill get passed for victims of theft to be able to retrieve their goods from pawn shops without paying to buy them back. Palm Beach Sheriff's new commander of District 4, Cap-tain Di Berardino, announced that an ordinance just passed NOT allowing panhandling on medians or intersections, due to safety concerns. This eliminates firefighters from their usual method of "filling the boot" as a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. However, Publix has al-lowed firefighters to collect donations in front of Publix stores throughout Palm Beach County. He also mentioned that many people are leaving guns in unlocked cars. Senator Abruzzo states he was instrumental in getting a Grandparents rights bill passed. Previously grandparents had no guaranteed rights of visitation, now they have a legal method of gaining this right. He also stated that not much was accomplished this session & the representatives left Tal-lahassee with much not done. Senator Clemens says the Flor-ida House violated the constitution by ending the session early and going home. No one was punished for this. An on-line voting registration bill passed. This was the first voter expansion vote to pass in many years. The Senator claimed that many good items for Palm Beach County were put in the budget, but most were vetoed by Governor Scott. Senator Sachs advises it is very inconvenient to get to Talla-hassee for our Representatives and Senators. The choices are changing planes at Atlanta or driving to Miami where there are two flights a day, one of which is very early in the morn-ing. She claimed that the Senate districts were configured to support friends, which is also the opinion of the State Supe-rior Court. The League of Women Voters has asked for changes to the districts. Representative Berman told us the vote to expand health care coverage failed to pass. An easement of land in West Palm Beach will be used for a ballpark where the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals will do their Spring Train-ing. Most importantly a bill was passed allowing people with terminal illnesses to try experimental drugs. In answer to a question from the audience Representative Berman told us the annual salary she receives as a Representative is $29,000. (continued on bottom of column 2)

A traffic signal is due to be installed at Sims and Atlantic. The construction process is expected to last until October 2016. In an effort to facilitate the process, the Alliance of Delray Residential Associations has requested a radar traffic monitor-ing device which will collect data. It is now up and running. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is working hard to help end euthanasia because of pet-overpopulation. They offer free spay/neuter surgery for owned cats in Palm Beach County on certain days throughout the year. A rabies vaccination and microchip may be included in the service. The Next Spay Day October 16th! For an appointment, please go to: www.peggyadams.org

Talk of the Town by BOB TOWNSEND

In Memoriam

Plat 4/5 remembers

We were saddened to learn of the passing of

Leona Grell

We extend our condolences to her family and friends

May her memory be for a blessing.

IDAHO ome of the grandest moments in life occur when you least expect them. Take my summer in Massachusetts for example. I was taking a leisurely stroll in the tiny, beachfront community known as Hull, not anticipating anything significant would happen on that dreary afternoon, when I spotted a pickup truck with an Idaho license plate and the words Turtle Racing written in script across the front door. That may not seem like a very big deal to you, but it got me thinking and anything that gets me thinking is a huge deal. I pondered it and came to the unmistakable conclusion that turtle racing is probably a huge spectator sport in Idaho. That and potato peeling. I mean, what else would you do in Idaho? I suppose you could go to visit the Craters of the Moon National Monument. But that wouldn’t be exciting. It’s just a

bunch of craters. They call it a lunar landscape. That should hold your attention for about a minute and a half. The landscape was created by an eruption of a volcano. And they say the area is still “geographically

active.” I suppose that could get your attention in a

hurry if it blew its top again while you were there. But that hasn’t happened in the last two millennia and, I

don’t know about you, I’m simply not that patient to

wait another 2,000 years. Or you could visit the Old Idaho Penitentiary. It’s

closed. They say it’s haunted, but that doesn’t make it

much of a tourist attraction. It’s not haunted by anyone

you’d want to talk to. Hey, it was a prison. And it’s

been closed since the early 1700s. If you talked to any-one from that era, you’d have nothing in common. And

what would you say to somebody from Idaho anyway? “Hello there, nice to meet you. Seen any good turtle races lately?” Who in their right mind ever came from Idaho any-way? Well, there was Jake Plummer. Not to be con-fused with Jake from All State. You know, the dude who hangs around the house in his khakis and you can call him at all hours of the night and make your wife jealous as hell. “She sounds hideous!” Jake Plummer, obviously, is also not to be confused with Jake the Plummer for the St. Paul/Minneapolis Twin Cities you call when unexpected leaks occur. No, I’m talking about Steven Jake Plummer who was a National Football League quarterback for the Cardinals and Broncos. He came from the thriving me-tropolis of Boise, Idaho.

S

And, of course, Paul Revere came from Idaho. No, take it easy; don’t get your underwear on backward.

I’m not talking about the silversmith who climbed

aboard Brown Beauty (did you know his horse was named Brown Beauty? See, you learned something to-day). I’m not talking about the silversmith who climbed

aboard his sturdy steed and galloped through the streets of Boston, warning one and all that they were about to be visited by a haughty group of Englishmen who were arriving a bit late for the original Tea Party. I’m talking

about the famed musician Paul Revere of the group Paul Revere and the Raiders. He came from the thriv-ing metropolis of Garden Valley, Idaho. You’ll note, famed individuals from The Gem State – that’s the state of Idaho – are few and far between. The Champagne Lady came from Idaho. You remem-ber The Champagne Lady. She was Norma Zimmer from the Lawrence Welk Show. She also recorded Ir-ving Berlin’s White Christmas. Well, that’s not quite

true. She sang backup for Big Crosby, who recorded White Christmas. Well, that’s not quite true, either. She

was part of a group who sang backup for Bing Crosby, who recorded White Christmas. But I want to get back to my original question. Well, this is going to be difficult because my editor, Linda Solomon, told me I’m not to write anything po-

litical. But sorry, Linda, the devil made me do it - just this once. Perhaps the most famous individual to ever come out of the state of Idaho is Sarah Palin. She comes from the thriving metropolis of Sandpoint, Idaho. So, getting back to my original question: Who in their right mind ever came from Idaho? Nobody.
