BRUNCHESBRUNCHESWEEKEND

by Sergio Salazar

As mornings begin to cool and Delray Beach stirs from its long summer slumber, a peculiar Sunday ritual can be observed. Pilgrims by the hundreds make their way along the streets and avenues, seeking sustenance and relaxation. They may choose eggs benedict on a beachside balcony, or mimosas on palm shaded patios. Huevos rancheros, smoked salmon latkes, and creole style shrimp and grits might help soak up last night’s excess, and endless bloody mary cocktails will ensure blissful afternoons. By the time the crowds disperse, for fun in the sun or the comforts of home, they are basking in the deep fulfillment of Delray’s secular sacrament, Sunday Brunch. The rising sun over the Atlantic is a familiar sight to regulars at Cafe Luna Rosa’s seaside brunch. Opening the doors at 7:00 am makes sense when you have a priceless balcony view of the beach and open ocean beyond. Luna Rosa has an extensive menu, and a distinctive Italian flair. Their bloody mary Antipasto is an absurdly nourishing cocktail, and they may be the only establishment on Earth to serve Bolognese as a brunch item. Savvy Patrons who get brunch under their belts early have the choice of a full afternoon on the beach or continuing their brunch experience just across the intercostal waterway. For a brunch menu starring all the bounty of the sea, it’s tough to beat City Oyster. This Atlantic Ave staple has all you can drink bloody mary cocktails and mimosas, and has the cojones to feature a Petrossian Caviar

eggs benedict. A Maine lobster roll with watermelon and a crème brulee stuffed French toast are two of the chef ’s more creative offerings. City Oyster also boasts the town’s best brunch raw bar, with a broad selection of fresh seafood. Max’s Harvest in Pineapple Grove is a restaurant with a vision. Their ingredients are locally sourced, and the diversity of Florida’s sea and soils provide their chefs with a rich palate of flavors. Fresh squeezed local juices include orange, grapefruit, and of course, cucumber-watermelon-yuzu. Those lucky guests who are seated on Max’s lush patio are literally surrounded by the herbs and berries that will garnish their meals; some of their produce is grown on the premises. Max’s commitment to sustainability means that diners leave with a full stomach and a clean conscience. Back on Atlantic Avenue, Tryst Gastropub is the place to see and be seen early Sunday afternoons. Huevos rancheros and some of the best fish tacos on the east coast are best enjoyed at the street side tables; the intersection of Swinton and Atlantic showcases some of Delray’s best people watching. With the afternoon sun sinking in the west and Tryst’s bar starting to fill up with happy hour customers, the regulars call for one more round of bloody mary cocktails. Fully recovered from Saturday’s escapades, it’s time to toast another week well lived. 9

SP TLIGHTBARTENDER

Delray Beach Passport: How long have you been bartending at Bru’s Room?Jason Boatner: A little over a year. I got my start “in the biz” in Memphis, around 2000.

DBP: What is your favorite part of bartending?JB: I love meeting new people and making new friends. Honestly I’m a people watcher and it’s the best job for such a thing. I see a lot of funny things happen.

DBP: How do sports fans represent their team at the bar?JB: All types, there’s your truest devoted fans who come out no matter what and support their team win or lose. I’ve seen grown men cry. You have the band wagon guys who seem to show up when their team wins the championship the year before. And just the normal fan who loves to come cheer and have a good time. That’s just a couple from my observation.

Name: Jason Boatner

Bar: Bru's Room

Hometown: New Albany, Mississippi

Age: 32

Specialty Drink: “The Coach”

Hangover Cure: Water beforehand, Aleve

20

Page 21: Delray Beach Passport Fall 2014

DBP: When you’re not at Bru’s Room what are you up to? JB: Nothing good! (Laughter) No I’ve spent most of the summer around the water. I hang with friends mainly as all my family is back in Mississippi. I’ve also been studying real estate. Should be licensed and ready to go by November.

DBP: Any similarities between bartending and the real estate world?JB: Whether it’s a $5 beer or a $500,000 house they are both about communicating with a customer and providing the best service possible.

DBP: What’s your favorite Delray hang out outside of Bru’s?JB: There’s a few but I love taco Tuesday next door with my friends at El Camino.

DBP: A lot of “In the Biz” employees come here after work, what are the pros and cons of that?JB: Ha, I can’t think of any cons that’s for sure. What’s better than one: a bar full of your friends, and two: when you’re busy they know you’re busy and have the respect for you that you wish everyone could understand. That’s keeping it short, it’s a great fun crowd.

DBP: To you, what is the definition of being a real bartender? JB: Anyone can pour a drink or can be taught to mix a drink. You have to be able to handle a bar and a crowd. Someone who can talk to just about anyone about almost anything. Sometimes even listen to anyone about anything. They keep their cool under pressure as well as control the cool of others. It’s tough sometimes to balance all this, which makes bartenders awesome people.

“Tony, yes you--you do not look anything like Brad Pitt; you’re a lying troll with bad teeth and a sweaty disposition…lose my number and pay for the five drinks I’m about to consume!” –Things we wish we could say when disappointed on a first date…but don’t. By the way, Tony—if you read this, I’m not sorry.

Online dating should be a pleasant experience in which one meets others outside of their social circle to engage in conversation, share a meal or drinks, or enjoy an activity, in the hopes of finding some-thing more. Below are my tips for navigating the world of online dating.

First, there’s the whole pesky profile business to get through. I’m actually quite proud of mine due to responses like: “You seem fun, pas-sionate, very down to earth, and funny! I really enjoyed reading your profile and

would love to take you for a drink and get to know you.” (Plenty of Fish) There is the occasional: “yo sexy whatsup” (Ok Cupid). At the end of the day they are both paying compliments…but only one will

hear from me. Is a quick spelling and grammar check that hard to navigate?

After a “match” is made or a message has been reciprocated, the virtual conversation gets rolling. I have made the mistake of giving my number too soon, and was immediately greeted with pictures (you know the ones). When noth-ing else is happening, it may seem like a great idea to score a last minute date, but the worst dates I have been on…started this way. It makes for a better first date to learn a little about the person, and schedule at least two nights out so if they do flake, there is still time for someone else.

The date is scheduled and what happens next is up to me, unless…the inevitable last minute cancellation ensues. Not to say I have never cancelled a date, but I certainly don’t wait until twenty minutes beforehand. Most likely, a seemingly better offer comes along, but excuses range from something work-related came up, to not feeling well due to Lupus…yep, I’ve heard it all! It’s painfully an-noying to leave work ready for the evening, only to discover a text from the person I was minutes from meeting that begins, “I’m so sorry, but…” My rule is that if you don’t show up, you need to lose

my number, period. Is it really that hard to get yourself where you say you’re going to be?

For the dates that do show up, and on time--extra points, unless they look nothing like their profile pictures. I don’t person-26

Page 27: Delray Beach Passport Fall 2014

ally have a problem with guys shorter in stature because I’m 5’1’’, but I do have a problem with liars (Tony). I’ve heard horror stories from past dates that began with, “wow, you actually look like your pictures,” so, I know some ladies aren’t being honest with them-selves either. One or two pictures with the perfect lighting and all dolled up is okay (cleavage shots and fishy kiss face pictures are not), but give a range…I purposely include one no make-up picture in casual attire so that expectations are realistic…it may be a virtual dating world out there, be we can still be real!

My advice:

• Be honest with your photo selections, height, and body type.• Usespellingandgrammarcheckforyourprofile.• Showup,orifyoumustcancel-doitbeforenoon.• Gentlemen-it’sstillnicetopickupthecheckonthefirst date.• Ladies-don’tcountonhimtopickupthecheckonafirst date.• Tony-investinbreathmints!
