Please note, plant prices are determined based on a number of factors, which often change right up until the sale opens. Therefore, pricing is not included in this catalogue. Delaware Nature Society has made every effort to avoid neo-nictinoids and other systemic pesticides being used on our plants. However, we cannot guarantee that every plant is pesticide-free.

IntroductionDear Native Plant Enthusiasts,

Our Native Plant Sale is an annual tradition that spans over two decades. This year, Delaware Nature Society is celebrating our 50th Anniversary. As a tribute to this half-century mark, we invite you to share our passion and dedication to protecting and improving the environment where we live, work and play.

This year’s Native Plant Sale theme, “Blooms with Impact: Plants for People and Pollinators,” will help you to do just that. You can select from over 350 varieties of native trees, shrubs, flowers, ferns, grasses and aquatic plants that will help attract and sustain pollinators. During the sale, our plant experts will be available to help you make the best choices for your home gardens, so you can select plants that will not only beautify your landscape, but also help support our local ecosystem.

Your purchases at our Native Plant Sale directly support our work to improve wildlife habitat, and increase opportunities for younger generations to connect with nature, and make lasting impressions, like a child’s first glimpse of a monarch butterfly.

As you know, monarch butterfly populations – along with many other pollinators - are struggling for a variety of reasons including habitat loss. We depend on these beneficial insects to pollinate many of our food crops but these pollinators are also an important food source for wildlife. However, the good news is that we can make a positive difference just by adding more native plants to our yards while creating beautiful, easy to care for, gardens.

Again, thank you for your support of our Native Plant Sale, and Delaware Nature Society.

Happy Planting!

Would you like your yard to be a flower show all season?sandy Dennison-JamesVolunteer chair, native Plant sale committee

This year we want to help you plant natives for blooms from spring thaw to fall frost.

Look in this catalog, online at delnature.org/NPS, and at the Native Plant Sale for lists of long-blooming plants, as well as lists of plants for sun and shade, in order of bloom. Our on-site experts can help you fill in the “quiet” times in your garden.

Even better, by enjoying native plants in bloom – from the maples and bloodroot of spring to the asters and witch-hazel of very late fall – you will be helping beneficial insects, especially endangered native pollinators.

If you like to eat, you need pollinators! And we’re talking about more than honey. It’s estimated that one out of every three bites of food we eat is directly dependent upon pollinators, from bees to butterflies to hummingbirds to beetles. Yes, beetles – if you’ve tasted pawpaw fruits, then you have benefited from their “work.”

If you have a garden – or merely have room for a few tomato plants – you’ll discover how adding native plants will bring pollinators that increase your harvest. These same plants can attract beneficial insects that prey on “bad bugs” that might damage your crops.

Many people have heard about Colony Collapse Disorder, which is causing huge die-offs among honeybees. So it’s even more important than ever that we foster our native pollinators to supplement the European honeybees that growers have relied upon in the past.

Wild bees already are responsible for pollinating many crops, from tomatoes to watermelons. Native bees are more tolerant of cool conditions, so they get to work early and remain active late in the season, and they don’t stay home on cloudy days.

But native pollinators are in trouble, too. Researchers have found that native bumblebees are declining. Monarch butterflies, which visit and pollinate many flowers, are disappearing. Monarch caterpillars must feed on Asclepias (milkweeds). With reduced numbers of wild areas that contain milkweeds, fewer monarchs

are able to reproduce – and that means that here in the Mid-Atlantic we are seeing them less often than ever before.

Even wasps can be important pollinators – some don’t sting, and others are likely to sting only when grabbed or when their nest is disturbed. Many of them prey on other insects that often are undesirable to gardeners.

More blooms for allBarbara aldingernative Plant sale committee Member

Pollinators need a steady supply of nectar and pollen from early spring through late fall. Gardeners also want lots of flowers all the time. Here are a few ideas to increase the blooms in your garden no matter what its size.

The general pattern for blooming is to begin in early spring in the shade, later in part sun, and peak in summer and fall in full sun. Use our bloom timelines for sun, part sun and shade to add plants that bloom at times different from most in an area. Low growing Phlox subulata and much larger Amsonia species are early bloomers for full sun. Heuchera villosa is a well behaved late bloomer for shade, while a mixed planting of white and blue wood asters (Eurybia divaricate/Symphyotricum cordifolium) provides blooms from August to October in a shady area where their spreading habit is not a problem. The large white blooms of Hydrangea can add midsummer

interest in a shady area and the orange blooms Rhododendron prunifolium pop out in late summer.

How long a particular species blooms impacts the number of flowers in your garden at any point in the growing season. Both Phlox stolonifera and P. divaricata hold flowers much longer than most spring shade bloomers. Rudbeckia and Coreopsis species are dependable long bloomers in summer full or part sun. Echinachia and Monarda have a series of blooms on each plant.

A few species bloom more than once. The most notable is the groundcover Green-and-Gold (Chrysogonum virginianum) which blooms April to frost...

Peacefully coexisting with bees and other pollinatorsLori athey Habitat coordinator, Delaware nature society

In all my years of gardening, I have only been stung because of my own inattentiveness. I have stepped on bees while walking barefoot, I have accidently grabbed a bee while reaching for a flower, and once I even sat on a bee. Ouch! But you can learn from my mistakes:

Bees anD WasPs 101

Just like a hungry kid at an all-you-can-eat buffet, when bees and wasps are collecting pollen, food is the only thing on their mind. They only sting in self-defense, so stay out of their way and avoid touching them and they won’t bother you. Honey bees really don’t want to sting you, because the act of

stinging rips out their abdomen, killing them. Bigger bees and wasps may look scary (looking scary is their primary defense) but they are not likely to sting unless forced to. Only Yellow Jackets and Hornets tend to be aggressive and quick to sting if you get in their way – if you know what they look like, you can easily avoid them.

garDen Design suggestions

Avoid placing pollinator-attracting plants near high-contact areas such as beside walks, doors, sitting areas, play areas...
