Grow Your Own in December

You’ll be patting yourself on the back if you’re looking out over a full Christmas dinner on your plot (minus the turkey probably – unless you’ve got livestock too!) I, however, am kicking myself because this year I might have to stoop to buying sprouts. Nearly all mine have ‘blown’, where instead of forming a tight ball the sprouts open up like flowers. It’s said to be caused by wind disturbing the roots and I was very late staking mine up this year – in fact a couple had actually blown over. Maybe I could use them as some sort of sprout leaf stir fry …

If you fancy doing a bit of planting in December then the shortest day is the traditional day for planting garlic. They need a full month of temperatures below 10°C to form bulbs, otherwise you can end up with just one big clove. If you’re short of space, you could pot up some cloves in pots or in a windowbox. Plant them 8” apart so that the tips are just showing above the soil. And then harvest them on the longest day or when the stalks start to die back.

Spinach can also be sown now and is a vegetable that’s well worth growing at home – studies have found that commercially produced spinach can have traces of up to 20 differ-ent pesticides. It is rich in vitamins and iron and crops all year round. If you’re planting for the first time, why not put it next to a strawberry bed as apparently they have a mutually beneficial effect.

I have one small uncultivated area left and have been speculating about what to grow there. On a recent trip to Harewood House I visited their Himalayan Garden and saw some beautiful bamboo plants growing. Bamboo canes are always most useful and a ready sup-ply would come in handy. I think a bamboo plant would be a good combination of beauty, variety and usefulness. All I need then is a Spear & Jackson tree…

A nice indoor winter project which was suggested to me by the Edible Garden Show site is to paint pictures of vegetables on large stones and use these as row markers instead of little white sticks. I’ve done squash, onion & garlic so far and, although I wish I’d chosen stones with a smoother finish, once they’ve had a few coats of varnish they don’t look too bad. I have had to write the name of the veg next to each picture too for clarity’s sake though!
